  • Another great tip from a friend gets put to the test in this episode of TWG. Can I keep bush turkeys from wrecking my garden using old teddy bears? YES? ...MAYBE? UPDATED = NO. This technique worked for about two weeks. Then they came back. But hey...keep watching. It`s a fun video.
    Peace, love and heaps of photon particles :-)

      I wish that teddy thing worked on dogs.
      My roommates got a puppy which does the same thing as the bush turkeys.
      I call the puppy 'devil mutt'.

    The only thing I have found to prevent bush turkey damage is to surround ever single plant with chicken wire or piles of straggly branches. If they can't reach the soil they can't dig it up. You can't do a half-assed job of it or leave it until the next day after planting or they will find it and destroy it.

    chop and drop large logs all around the trees to stop the bush turkeys from scrating up the bottom of the roots that you want to protect. They can not move them see, thats how you stop them, it just may not look clean but it solves the problem. love ya work weedy hope that helps you mate. drop some big trees to get the logs. don't hurt the birds they go else where. also put net over them till they go else where, a deterant.

      Roger. Did that to about 1/3 of my cassava and yacon so I was able to harvest enough to make 5 kg cassava flour and 1 litre of yacon syrup. They got everything else. I ran out of chop and drop and was not bothered to net, or chase more sticks! Good call 👍💪🏻🙏🏻

    Thanks weedy. Totally relate to your experience with turkeys , I live in kyogle shire as well (Barkers vale) .Exact same experience , sweet potato, potato, turmeric ginger, banana bunches, the succulent base of the bananas & the plant falls over, seems worse in the winter months , but I might be wrong , they seem to invade en masse for a while then disappear, I noticed a while back when I heard wild dogs around the turkeys disappeared for a while. My approach has been to build cages over my veggie beds & make sure I get bags on the bananas early, grow more than I need & just remember the food you grow is not yours until you harvest it. Cheers & thanks

    They are very clever too. The ,male maintains the nest and checks the temperature -if too hot he removes some compost and if not warm enough he starts scratching again . They also reuse the nests.

    • @TheWeedyGarden
      @TheWeedyGarden  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t think they reuse it but rather come back to the same GPS coordinates due to the nests protective position ect each season. They need to rebuild it with fresh stuff to start the heat. The “old” nest, which at this point is delicious rich soil, does not contribute to this, therefore I’m going to steal some of the soil it has made for my garden in return for all the produce it’s offspring stole from me!! Fair trade I reckon. They male won’t care the soil is gone. It will just make a new the same spot anyway👍😁

      I learnt heaps just doing this episode. The fact that a bush turkey chick does not have a parent to show it how to live proves to me that memory is not in the brain, but in every cell. So because the chick has the parents cells, it just recognizes everything and feels everything the parent does. Just like every other form of life. That was the most interesting lesson for me, and learning that the chick is born from a pile of fresh compost. What a fantastic entrance to a life!

    Weedy, learned something new glad it worked. Would like an update video soon :) I have a question, we have small area with plants around the house and whenever I water the plants the isopods crawl all over the wall and sometimes they visit neighbors wall as well. I understand they are good for soil but I fell they exploded in population. How do I control them?

    • @TheWeedyGarden
      @TheWeedyGarden  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You don’t want to “control” them. Let them be, and don’t harm them. Isopods are generally harmless and feed on decaying plant material. They are important decomposers of organic matter in the soil ecosystem and help to improve soil nutrient content and quality.

    I need to manage Brush Turkeys in our garden in Brisbane as they have assimilated into the urban area bordering Toohey Forest.
    If you give them a mound it'll attract them away from the garden. An ex-bathroom mirror or two around the place to trick the males into thinking they have competition. The males will chase the females away. Depending on placement you'll largely have the turkeys manage themselves. The other thing you could do is buy a roll of fencing wire (like chicken wire) and roll that out over your swales. Roll it up / flip it off when tending to the beds. Good luck!

    Nice to see you back. I can’t believe what those turkeys did! (I’m not a vegetarian, so I think I’d be eating turkey for the rest of the year!)I don’t know if you folks in Oz use scarecrows in gardens, but, here in the States, they’ve been used for generations. They’re essentially man-sized, man- shaped bundles of straw dressed in old men’s clothes, stuck up in gardens like you did with the teddys. Obviously to scare away crows, but I think it might work for turkeys, too, as well as some other critters. Pretty much the same idea. Oh, and don’t forget to put a hat on him, too.

  • @CanadianPermacultureLegacy

    The only thing about using Teddy bears is that they aren't going to last longer than 1 season, and that's a lot of waste that ends up in a landfill (and money spent on the teddy). Have you tried instead looking at what the Bush Turkeys like to eat? Then plant those for them somewhere else, to try to deflect them from your property? The bush turkeys aren't being malicious, they are just trying to survive themselves. They don't want to be around humans if they don't have to, they often push into human territory because we've destroyed their other habitat (and food).
    I find that most of my pest problems can be solved by actually FEEDING the pest, but doing it in a way that encourages them to be elsewhere and not in my food forest. Deer are our biggest pest, and I plant Jerusalem artichokes and apples for them, then on "my side" of that, I plant thorny plants. They have food on "their side", so they don't tend to push into "my side". I have had almost no deer problems in 5 years since i started doing that.

    Be careful of the mirrors, they state that is one reason Europe had bush fires during the recent high temperatures. A lot of gardens have decorative mirrors but the suns rays can hit them just so and perhaps start a fire.

    • @jetblack2602
      @jetblack2602 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      a flat mirror does not concentrate light, so that it is impossible to start a fire with it.

    • @TheWeedyGarden
      @TheWeedyGarden  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is impossible for a flat mirror to reflect more light than it recieves. In some cases the light might hit something else that might refract the light, like a broken coke bottle, but that could just as well happen in the bare sunlight.

    In Nicaragua there are a lot of stray cats and they do something similar to plants sometimes. People here protect plants by putting a pile of heavy rocks around the base of the plant. Do you think that would help make it harder for the bush turkey to dig up the roots at the center?
    It looks like the plants die because the turkey digs the center of the plant up. But with the center protected by rocks, maybe the turkey would just focus on the outer edges of the roots (which might help the plant survive bush turkey visits)

    • @TheWeedyGarden

    Very delightful video Weedy but was heart-wrenching to see how ruthlessly the bush turkeys wrecked and ate your garden produce.. 😖😭😭 I hate these turkeys to the core and am currently having a ‘war’ with them in my own garden. The weird thing is they were never here in our area in previous years but only this year. 😮
    I’m devastated though that the teddies didn’t ward them off completely and that they came back after 2 weeks, is that correct??! 😢😱😭 Did the mirror work though? I have heard that they also don’t like metallic or shiny paper so that’s something else you can try tying on your fence.

    • @TheWeedyGarden
      @TheWeedyGarden  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Teddies don`t work for more than 2 weeks. Mirrors DO NOT WORK AT ALL. Running and shout scares them until you leave the garden, scarecrow they laugh at every day (because it is very amusing naturally). The only thing that does work is putting a little piece of lead in their left ear, but I can`t and will not do that. A dog will work, so we are going to get a dog, but the first time the dog gets hit by the electric fence the dog will never go near the garden again...so I have no solution other than the obvious with the lead ball in the ear.
