I've noticed one very important detail. Back in the 70's when they still didn't saw real wreck, even Masumoto didn't knew much about secondary guns. If you saw Yamato in any game, documentaries etc. you know what I mean. Her secondary guns were 15cm, not 20cm. And they didn't looked like minature versions of main 46cm guns, they looked more... Weird. But anyway, it's great to see her back in her old days.

When I see pictures of Yamato's wreck, sitting upright on the bottom, I can still see the once proud ship beneath all the rust and damage. It is great that Leji Matsumoto gave the great battleship life again, even if it is only fiction.

i think he means that the actual yamato's wreckage was actually spread over a great area, but in the fiction, the yamato sank in one piece and just rests there ready for someone to build a spaceship inside it

Not only new life, but also actual relevance, since Yamato's accomplished little during the war and its sacrifice only managed to shot down few american planes and killing most of its men...it's a pretty depressing tale of how such beautiful ship with all those men was sent to the bottom in a useless suicide.

Thanks for the clip. I remember it. Some friends told me the english version was censored or cut. But in Latin America, i think we saw the uncensored version, because i remember clearly this part. Anyways, it´s great to see Yamato, more than 20 years later.

I got all 5 videos of the Yamato movies in a package in 2000 (didn't have them on dvd at the time) and saw this. Really great backdrop. As for the distance to the Megelanic cloud (i.e. Iscandar and Gammilon or as the Japanese called it: Gammilus). The opening of the Star Blazers tv show said it was "148,000 light years and back" or a 296,000 light year round trip.

Sadly, that was impossible for a reason that we are probably both well aware of, yet shall be explained for others who may see this comment.
So, back in 1974, when Classic Yamato came out, it was heavily believed that the Yamato had sunk in one piece and that it would hypothetically be a realistically feasible endeavor to raise the Yamato and repair/retrofit it. However, the Yamato's resting place was discovered in 1985, and it was learned that very shortly after the Yamato had slipped beneath the waves that it's centrally-placed ammo reserves ignited and exploded, viciously ripping the battleship in two far beyond any possible repair.
On a side note, this series of post-sinking public perception also happened with the Titanic. Confidently believed to have sunk whole, resting place found and it's discovered that it sank in two pieces.
Anyways, with this discovery, it was no longer a possiblity at all, let alone a feasible one, for the Yamato to ever be able to be converted for space travel, hence the explanation that the Yamato in 2199 being built from the grou- er... from the water up?

Today when we known how Yamato wreck look in reality such conversion to spaceship is simply impossible because Yamato was tear apart by explosion of ammo chambers.
Entire Ten Go operation was a call of desperation because many Japan Navy officers known that this mission have very small chance of success BUT Crew of Yamato deserve respect for thier bravery.
They show something what was lacking on the other side of front line and i mean Honor.
    May they Rest in Peace.

      @Trek001 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

In reality, the Captain of the Yamato and the destroyer group didn't want to go on the mission stating it was a waste of lives and ships. The Admirals replied that the Emperor had been asking about them which sort of forced their hand into going. They were supposed to only be loaded with enough fuel to get to the target islands, but the shipyard crews gave them all the fuel they had to hand - meaning Yamato could have got back

Qusza2007 you didn't understood, or lost the meaning in translation.
In 2199 they clearly mention "the exterior" was just camouflage..., hull and everything is new.
I remember the 1970's show at least shaking off the rust camouflage suggesting it was just that.
After all even today the Yamato, or Bismark, or Titanic with barely a century at the bottom have little steel left... 95 years more means dust, or just a memory.
But who cares, the 2199 show is really good

^ That had more to do with the ship exploding and then rapidly sinking.
It's unfortunate; but rapidly sinking ships tend to suck smaller objects down with them; humans included.

I wonder if, due to the omission of this footage, that is why Disney, when they once obtained rights to do a Yamato film, decided they could change all of the characters to Americans and make the ship the Arizona (sunk at Pearl Harbor) as opposed to Yamato? As soon as that little tidbit hit air, the rights were revoked.

I doubt it. That script (which was floating around for years was most likely written just to ensure that Disney could hold onto the license without having to actually make a movie. This is done to keep a competitor from making a potentially profitable film. Now that Disney has Star Wars (& you can see what a fine job they're doing there) & a live action Japanese film have been made the rights have gone to another studio.

Yes, you're right, however YAMATO has the powerful engine that named "HADOU ENGINE" (It is warp engine). YAMATO is going to Iscandar, using warp ability: just like Enterprise of Ster Trek. By the way, it is very interesting for me, YAMATO and Enterprise, these two starships are named from warship within WW2, YAMATO is battleship, and Enterprise is aircraftcarrier... Maybe their name is very loved by the people of Japan and USA.

This is one of the most important scene in Space Battleship Yamato. Without this, it is going to be Starblazers... I am for omitting it in the US version. Starblazers was "just" a Starblazers, not enough the name of Yamato. "Yamato" should not be easy to be used. Because its name is "the soul of Japan" so to speak.
I heard Hollywood wants to make Starblazers live action. I hope they don't disgrace the Yamato.

It was to be an ending fit for a Samurai, Yamato left port with the above mentioned amount of fuel and full magazines. The fleet commander and the Yamato's Captain knew that this mission was suicide, with no air cover and the chance of an aerial attack practically guaranteed, it would only be a matter of time from there.

    • @jimtaylor294
      @jimtaylor294 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's actually a myth. The orders given were for only enough fuel to reach the destination of Okinawa; but Kure (harbour) broke the rules and gave the Yamato all the fuel they could; so if the mission was aborted, their fellow sailors could get home.
That any of the Yamato's escorts made it back at all after she'd been sunk, illustrates that detail.

    • @mariosoto3832

Is not a mith. The japaneses wanted to use the ship like a beach fortress. Yamato and his other ship were destroyed before: es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operaci%C3%B3n_Ten-G%C5%8D

i wonder, why did they cut it out?
the US Navy was so afraid of one ship that they sended all planes they got on it.
Yamato took neer to 20 air bombs and torpedos, not counting plane-based rockets, and sunk becouse of floding.
a most simbolic "Kamikaze" mission (or Kammakkazi for US sailors).

Likely American pilots weren't saluting as they sent it to the bottom. It had little effect during the war as well. A much more valiant story is that of Taffy 3 and their legendary stand against that monster and the fleet accompanying it. You will never find greater valor in the face of overwhelming odds than that of those brave men.

@dislokx3 sa War is not that Simple. Its not Japan bad US good, or reverse. Most of Yamatos crew were victims of the war, they didnt start. Same with German soliders in WWII, they were mostly brainwashed, and told they are good when US is commiting war crimes and Germany is the superior country.
Edit: Not only capitan died on the ship, only about 275 crew members survived, when over 3000 served on the ship.

"Hellcat pilot saluting the sinking ship"
I saw it as shown here in 1976 in Mexico, the dubbed to Spanish version also sounding far superior to your English Star Blazers (Arnold Palmer's argument square)
This, which is not entirely historic as the IJN Yamato was a propaganda thing and might have been used as a maritime suicide version of what boys were doing with planes... And the casualties during battles were what mostly impacted a 7 year old girl.
Seeing the same series today and geez! Corny! Primitive Anime, not even character development was perfected as they do today.
SBSY 2199 is a far superior, a masterpiece in comparison.
And they didn't had the need to insert this kind of historical clip on the prologue: one can search Mark Felton's videos about it instead.
    /edit:
Forgot to mention the name they used in Mexican television... Star Blazers is a nonsensical name, silly... In Mexico they didn't reach that, the show was named The Spaceship ("La Nave Espacial")
Perhaps less intrusive, but still from Yamato to Argo (WTF) to Intrepid (what!!!) which is the name of the same vessel in Spanish
