Sad thing listening to this. We were truly spoiled back then. You had Stevie Wonder, Marvin, Lionel, Al Green, Bobby Womack that wrote their own lyrics and they also had outstanding talent playing music. Those days and that period is forever gone.

White guy here. I'll never forget when this song came out. I was about 10 or 11, I'm 55 now. My step father found another woman, came home when Mom wasn't there, packed his things and on the way out the door, he handed me a 45 of The Commodore's " Sail On " and told me to " hand this to your mother as soon as she gets home and tell her to play it." His other girl was waitin outside in a , at that time a brand new 1980 Trans Am. I looked out the window as a little kid, and watched them ride away. When my Mom got home she played the record and even though the song sounded good it still brought her to tears. I cried with her. Mom's long gone on to be with Jesus now along with stepfather but I still listen to this song and think back from time to time. God bless all. 🙂

My wife and I got married in 1978. In the summer of 1979 we were renting a tiny place that was almost too small for the two of us. Our older son was a new born. We didn't own a TV, couldn't afford one, so in the evening we would listen to the radio. There was one particular DJ broadcasting from Rochester NY (near where we lived) that was our favorite and he would play this song most every evening that summer. That's how it seemed anyway. Hearing this song takes me back to those times immediately! Sometimes it seems so long ago, but when I hear this song I'm right there again!
Update: First let me say that I am truly amazed by all the comments my story sparked. To those who have asked, yes we are still together. Our sons are both in their 40's now and have kids of their own. It's been a long trip from the days I described above, much has changed, and yet at the same time it feels like the time has gone way too fast! I guess it's all part of growing old...

They’ll be inducted eventually as they aren’t the only great group to be put off for a while. Too much of what occurs has to do with he category’s of music, i.e. Rock/Pop?? Total BS categories is has kept many great artist from getting in thus far… too much cross polonization of musical genre. Iron Maiden, Pat Benetar, Dionne Warwick, Chaka Kahn, Carol King, Tina Turner, Go-Go’s, Alice In Chains, Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne, Kool & the Gang, The Marvelettes, Three Dog Night and Motley Crew to name a few? Nine Inch Nails are talented, but Biggie Smalls was just THUG-LIFE trash, and nothing like Run-DMC, Whodini and the Fat Boys.

I miss the days of the 70’s and 80’s. Life was so simple. Here I am pushing 50. Respect to all us 80’s kids, we turned out pretty damn good!
With this hectic, evil world and the internet we’re watching this on the “good old days” are gone and gone for good! I can’t help but wonder what kids of this generation will be saying about “TODAY” 40 years from now? I am fairly certain of one thing, there will never be another music era (70’s/80’s) that will span countless generations like the bands “we” grew up with! These songs take me back to so many country roads, road trips, innocent love , first kisses and just wide eyed and fancy free in the world around me!

People, especially new school, really don't realize the healing message that was in old school music, especially this song... There were songs for every situation in your life, and this song, helped you regroup, and continue as usual, in obtaining those "Good Times" in life, that everyone should be looking for, because time is limited, and one must acquire life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, during their journey... So Imma just continue to "Sail On", if this is not the one....

This song is pure pleasure. It slowly builds and drifts for the first three minutes and then at 2:59 it just explodes into something absolutely fantastic with: "Sail on Honey"...congas, drums, grand piano, trumpets, syrupy strings create this wonderful explosion and does something special to my brain.
The worst part is that DJs always used to talk over the last part...

Man that buildup after he sings "A GOOOOOOD TIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIME" is epic! It's even better when you hear it in concert and the entire crowd knows the song and is anticipating that point. Nothing like hearing 70,000 people sing along at that point with those horns blaring in the background. Truly classic.

Such beautiful voices. The most exquisitely painful , soulful expression of original American music. The southern region of this country produced a genius sound that can't be found anywhere else in the world. The pain and suffering of African Americans produced the most innovative and influential musical sound of the last 200 years! You're welcome pop and R& B music we are your foundation!!!!!

+Stephen Hardy I agree with you. What I remember was that the late seventies was the first time in history when AA artists were accepted into the mainstream white America. Before then, you would take some shit for listening to R&B if you were white - heck I took shit as late as 1984 for listening to certain R&B artists. The Commodores along with a number of really fabulous artists made it okay - I mean really okay. That kind of genesis ALWAYS produces some good music. Like you say, all the years leading up to this period likely had a lot to do with it. When boundaries are eliminated, it takes a while to set new new boundaries. In the meantime, life is really good!
