Came onto a hits radio show today. Although I remember Dobie's version, I never saw it as "a love letter to music itself" and it really HIT ME!!! Music has sustained me throughout my life; I need it desperately. Going to quote this today on my FB page. Thanks for your insight.
HELLO WORLD When Dobie Gray died in 2011, he left 100% of his royalties to be split between St. Jude's and the Tennessee School For The Blind. I can't think of a better way to donate to those two wonderful organizations than to play this song! Every day!
Still listening to this in 2023. It's timeless but takes me back to when I first heard it in the 1970's. That was such a good time in my life. Just a kid with no worries. Mom n Dad were there and life was good. I was just a kid.

Everybody thinks this is some country love song, no my friend. This is soul right here. Soul about living and loving. Not loving like you love a person, loving like you love a people. Love people, not a person. Love the earth and what it's got. Love and love my friends.
I grew up in the 70's. My memories are magical mostly due to my parents and grandparents. But also Malls, arcades, putt putt golf, throwing knives and stars, building ramps for our bikes, no helmets,, all metal Tonka trucks, boxy BMW'S, sleek Datsun/Nissan z's, F-15''s, steel monkey bars, merry go rounds, tall swing sets, neighborhood pool, Zayre's, Foodworld, home-cooked family supper, awesome TV shows, the Pledge of Allegiance and Evel Knievel.
@@michaelmaniscalco2191 I'm a 15 year old who really wishes they were born in the 60s. While I understand that there was a lot more injustice, people werent as rich, and a lot of modern items I take for granted werent around, I feel like the complete freedom and wiggle room for fun in life was so much more prominent then. You could do so much dumb stuff and get off the hook. Life wasnt all about chasing that extra 0.1% in profit and instead it was about living life. The cool ass cars really dont hurt, but that's besides the point
@@olegkolesnikov7155 people had more wealth on average in the 60's compared to now. The dollar when further. You had more buying power, college was affordable. That isn't to say they were more rich. Some people are highly more wealthy today but on average the working man, makes less and the unemployment is higher. Also racial tensions are higher. plus maybe see this so you may understand why racial tensions are often inflamed. invidious.fdn.fr/watch?v=FwwNH_r2muw .
The "wood blocks" don't come in until the beginning of the second verse and stop at the end of it. This sound doesn't play all the way through the song. The significance of the wood blocks is that of a ticking clock when the verse goes "Beginning to think that I'm wasting time". There ARE "rim shots" a bit later, but no more wood blocks.
Oh man I really wish we could go back to a simple time when everyone left their ego at home and would just get along and have fun real music my people real soul in this music
Clint Dixon Mr. Archer, I tend to agree it was a simpler, I'd say better time; in many ways. I'd ask the "negative Nancy's" in which decade were we in the US NOT in a war? I know a lot of people who agree that today's stress level is ten times higher than then. One difference being that Vietnam got extensive coverage and the press was still _somewhat_ free to show the real casualties. And people actually protested. Where are the news anchors; 'inspiring' protests around Libya or Afghanistan? Seen anyone march recently? I think the sharp focus on the 'bad side', (yes, there's _always_ been a 'bad side', duh), ignores the things that were magical about the seventies. The music, "the dawning of the age" reasonably enlightened populace. I won't go on, but I could. I think people today are WAY more "uptight", way quicker to anger, and stressed out far more than the folks who used to say, "do your own thing". That seems more authentic to me than, "you do you", which a weak, watered down, insincere (?) derivitive. I took a minute to think before writing this as well, a luxury many folks don't have today, working two jobs to make ends meet can preclude real dialogue at the best of times. Houses were more affordable than now. Ok I ramble, hope I've made my point...
+Chris Archer I hear what you're saying, I grew up those day's. Man...when I hear music from my era it sends me back to the great memories. Greatest Music PEACE

You got that right! It's funny one of the chorus lyrics is "I wanna get lost in your rock and roll", because that's exactly what happens every time I hear this awesome classic! I get fully lost in it and drift away!!!
I’ve listened to this song so many times on the radio when I was kid and in the most random moments it just pops back up in my memory.
I was 15 yrs old when his lovely melody hit the charts in 1973!!!!! Everyone loved this now classic, that continues to win hearts, 50+ yrs later. I am certain that this wonderful songs will remain with us for decades to come!!!!!
I was born in 62 and this is one of the few songs that no matter where or what I'm doing if I hear it I have to stop everything till it ends. Then I walk on in thought.
Here we are listening in 2024. Yall with me?
Yep, with you all the way! Songs my parents grew up with are timeless.
yes i am
Definitely listening and singing along 😊
It's still a better quality of Music today than most of today's music! 2024 and no signs of wear, as good as the day it was made!

Still listening to Dobbie! Still lovin the music I grew up with Sept 2024
I wouldn't listen to anybody else sing this..
Nope... ❤
Man, I miss the 70's, such great music, and a easier time to grow up in.
Well I'm beyond missing the '70s. I was born in 1993, but I wish that I was around in the '70s, or the '80s at the latest.
70's was the beginning of REAL MUSIC THAT. COURSES THROUGH YOUR BODY AND SOUL. GLAD TO BE OF THAT GENERATION. WE NOW LEAD AND I WANT THE SOUL TO FEEL THIS MUSIC OVER AND OVER
Now all we have is trash☹
@@benspalding3370 I liked the 80s ok , But the 70s brought me more joy in life and music
@@theodoreritola9758 What about the 60s?
It’s a beautiful morning here in Dallas Fort Worth this morning. The sun coming up looks like the painted sky reds and blues gorgeous. The song goes right with it. God bless y’all you have a wonderful Wednesday.✝️🛐🕊️🌈🦋🌈🥰😇🕊️❤️
When you think about it, this song is a love letter to music itself and how it can make you feel better in life. Amazing.
Came onto a hits radio show today. Although I remember Dobie's version, I never saw it as "a love letter to music itself" and it really HIT ME!!! Music has sustained me throughout my life; I need it desperately. Going to quote this today on my FB page. Thanks for your insight.
@@m.c.master4622 Glad it helped!
Wow what a beautiful comment.I thank you for that.I love this song and this version,it is the best.
Exactly.
Well said
HELLO WORLD
When Dobie Gray died in 2011, he left 100% of his royalties to be split between St. Jude's and the Tennessee School For The Blind. I can't think of a better way to donate to those two wonderful organizations than to play this song! Every day!
This song is timeless, old school rocks
Sure does ❤️🤘
AMEN,, indeed it does.
Still listening to this in 2023. It's timeless but takes me back to when I first heard it in the 1970's. That was such a good time in my life. Just a kid with no worries. Mom n Dad were there and life was good. I was just a kid.
I can’t ever listen to this song and not get tears in my eyes. Every damn time.
I know what you mean. It plays right into ones soul and realize life s and can be better. I too tear up and dream of better to come! Peace to you Mindy and keep the music deep inside your heart! An old man from Montana!
You have a good ❤️ and soul,
My friend don't change.
My Wife calls it
"My eyes are sweating"
So many memories are stirred hearing this!😔
To go back to those days knowing what we know now! We would have cherished every moment of every day!❤
Yup yup !
One of the classics!
this was me and my grandpa’s favorite song when we were hanging out together, he passed in 2015 and every time i hear this song i cry. RIP grandpa you are missed everyday.
I was born in 58 and grew up in the 60’s and 70’s. The best music ever! Rock, Blues, Motown, it just doesn’t get any better!
I agree. There is nothing like today's music no heart and no soul 60s 70s and 80s are the best music
Yes we can be very lucky to have this. 👍👍👍❤️🇩🇪

There are songs that many people copy and very very few can take one and make it theirs........forever. This one will always be Dobie's! Thru eternity. Always chokes me up because he does is so pure and so emotional! RIP Dobie. You are so missed!
It brings back priceless memories of the 70's even here in Africa!
Waylon does pretty good Took the whole band
True. Only the doobie brothers came close, but Doby still wins
This song will always be soothing to the soul. It’s July 2023 the world is upside down crazy but here I am with the volume turned up drifting away! 🎧
Stick around. It gets worst in October 🙁
Friendly reminder that this rendition of the song is the best ever 😁

Listening in September 2024. This is still a classic I can't help but let a little 😢 as I hear the melody and thinking about the better days and wondering where they went. I will drift away if I can.
Old classics never die just listen to this man what a song
Check this out. No loud noises, no lights, no half naked women, and no face tattoos but better than anything put out today. Just a man and the great music he's putting out. Wish it could be like that again.
I Agree!
Some of us are still trying 🎸
Same Here,Weird Everytime i hear this Song I sing it To JESUS.And i don't man that in a physical Bad way

Wow! A lot of people are listening to this today and in the last 2 weeks almost daily there's A comment! So this is mine! Brings me back to my teenage yrs. Best yrs. 70's! How lucky we were and didnt even know it!💞💫✌
Back in the day... when this first came out, it was my favorite song... I still love it!! 👍❤️

Today marks 4 years since my brother passed away. This was his favorite song. I've played it like 10 times and I'm all cried out.

He had the most beautiful voice ! Saw him open for Jim Croce in the 70's. He sang this song and BLEW ME AWAY !
Lucky dog! Those 2 on the same bill?

Awwww.... To see that show
Don't even get me started on Jim Croce!!!! Another voice silenced wat too soon.
What a beautiful line up 🥲
I love the distinctive question of “are you listening in 2024”?
No… we just clicked on this song for no particular reason… definitely not to actually listen to it
Anyone have any original thoughts or questions? Be better…😑
Aside from that… Great song 🤘
Everybody thinks this is some country love song, no my friend. This is soul right here. Soul about living and loving. Not loving like you love a person, loving like you love a people. Love people, not a person. Love the earth and what it's got.
Love and love my friends.
I grew up with this, it's way better Sung by Dobie :) Original is always best....
The lyrics, instruments singing are on par with that of country. Only difference is the guy's black.
this is Samuel L Jackson before pulp fiction
real country died with old hank.
Sue Johnson ha! Amen
Still tuning in to this masterpiece in June 2023 💜
This takes me back to the 1970s in america even though im 15 and live in germany
Germany spawned one of my favorite bands ever, Eloy. their music takes me to Germany in the 70s-80s even though I'm 16 and live in America
Ich fühl dich grade so hart und bin leicht angetrunken vielleicht auch deswegen

Love this song. I'm 70 years old now and this melts a lot of years away with just a few notes.
Big hit during June of 73. Other covered it , but no one did it better than Dobie Gray. Hear the wood blocks throughout, and the fine guitar playing!
@arturbello4213 Although Dobie Gray did a "cover" of this song, his was the first recording of it to become known and popular.
Oh man I really wish we could go back to a simple time when everyone left their ego at home and would just get along and have fun real music my people real soul in this music
I know what you mean. Too much entitlement now
When was there ever a time like that? Living in a dream my man
@Clint Dixon ya what I should have said I was this song reminds me of when I was a kid which for me was simpler lol
If your listening to this in 2024 your a legend
A time traveler too.

I explained this is what you hate and it is a black man singing. I think I played that song for him about 20 times. He never admitted he was wrong, but every time he drank I had to play him this song over and over.
