Nerdy fun facts: This was a one-take recording There are no edits There are no samples I played the whole 2nd prechorus halftime instead of fulltime, i literally just forgot what the part was 😂 No more second guessing, no more comping if possible, no more editing. I’m finally ready to be myself and be rhythmically vulnerable and just go with the flow nowadays. Thank you for your support!!!
I’m maybe older than your average Monuments fan (50 something). I'm a guitar player but have adored drummers though-out my life, with a timeline of favourite drummers that basically goes: Ian Paice, Neil Peart, Charlie Benante, Mike Portnoy, Gene Hoglan, Morgan Rose, Justin Foley, Chris Adler and then Mike Malyan! You are a joy to watch and hear, so much soul, keep on bouncing! Ps Nefarious is just what my 18 year old needed in the dark mist of A levels! Thank you Monuments, you are brilliant.
Hey im a 53 year old guitarist(who dreamed of being a drummer) and a Monuments fan lol, same effin story, Mike is my current #1 I guess if im honest my timeline is Nicko McBrain, Bill Ward, Lars Ulrich, Jerry Gaskill/Jack Irons, Thomas Haake/ Mike Malyan!
Never gets old watching Mike. He's always so animated and having such a good time. You can tell he's always feeling the music deeply, like he's a fan that turned up to the Monuments show and brought his drum kit with him. It's hard to describe but it hits different to see someone be super into their own music rather than just mechanically performing it. The passion really comes across. These guys are something special and also super down to earth awesome dudes. Can't wait to see em again.
there's just so much to love about this. drums are composed and mixed absolutely mint, a bit of left right show pony on the left crash, quick hi hat adjustment on the fly to name a few all while comfortably murdering it. you're a beast Mike
Love your drumming dude! As a drummer myself but now guitarist in a band i search and get so much inspirations for the drumparts just buy listening to your drumming thanks for that and stay healthy brother!
Mike, you keep doing what you feel because we're feeling it too. I felt like you channeled a little Postones in this track too. There was definitely a Tesseract vibe going on in that bridge. This is a fantastically composed piece from you and Browne. Love it
Absolutely super duper crazy drumming! Fits this song like a glove! Would've loved to see a fixed camera view (from the top perhaps) to actually see properly what is being played that plebians like me can learn to play this one day 😂 You're the man, Mike! Keep it up 💪
Impressive how you can make a trash crash sound pretty much exactly like a china. Is there a specific reason for switching to a trash crash and is it hard to mix/edit properly? Btw, you're freakin sick as always, Mike! :D
Pffffffff whoah. Followed you for many years and it’s awesome to see you back in good healthy form. I suffered the same medical issues you have and switched to guitar because of it. I can see you are loving having your functionality back in full force. Damn, you’re fluid again and it sounds awesome.
Only just seeing this - so sorry to hear, was it also hypermobility or femeroacetabular impingement/labral tear? Or more of the shoulder tendon rotator cuff stuff?
@@MalyanDrum It was a result of severe over use of my upper body in my youth and thinking I was bulletproof. 3 shoulder dislocations and my career demanded a lot from my arms. I developed tendinitis along with cubital and carpal tunnel. At 30 y/o I couldn’t feel my arms anymore. Years of physical therapy and dedication helped the recovery. At 36 I now train Jiu Jitsu and live a good life. My drums however sit silently waiting and I perform with a 7 string guitar and drum tracks. You are an awesome inspiration and I appreciate you responding. I hope you are still doing well.
Is this the song that Charlie featured on his Godslap anime opening? I knew you guys from before, but that video put you guys back on the radar for me. Sick jams Edit: yeah i saw the thing at the end. Nonetheless it's amazing.
Gotta ask Mike, - What's your favorite from the Monuments catalog to play? Not necessarily your favorite track, but the one you look forward to playing/practicing?
I was just wondering to myself why we’re not allowed to look at his feet or the rest of the drum kit! I guess the endorsement must have come through at an awkward time around the single and playthrough. I’m going to assume those aren’t Mapex shells😅
@@TunnelJumper Mike didn't have Mapex endorsement set by the time this video was shot. The video recording and edit was a stylistic choice of the videographer + the room this video was recorded was fairly small to capture everything. I had problems shooting there without a wide lens and as I remember videographer was also using a similar zoom lens like i did then. And no, these are the shells from Mike's previous endorser.
@@TunnelJumper it’s not an allowance thing at all! We just had a smaller room than usual here, and tried a roaming/character focused video this time. I actually gave no direction to hide the shells at all.
What frame rate is this shot at? The motion looks like it was higher than usual? Its an interesting look. Also, I notice the crash with holes instead of a China. Is this a permanent change to your set up or just for this tune. Sick playing as always
Youd have to ask Brian about the video settings! As for the trash crash. That was something Baard inspired me about. I have struggled for years with chinas, as if they sound good they break fast, and if they are thick enough to be durable, they sound clangy. The trash crash is a perfect mix for me and honestly the china always gets filtered and mixed to sound like a distorted crash by the end anyway!
@@MalyanDrum the trash crash sounds great. it's surprising that we haven't found a china that can be thin but not shit the bed after being thoroughly twatted as is basically 90% of the use case for chinas haha
I shot the video at a normal 30 fps, but I cranked the shutter speed very high (I think 1/500sec) and that is why the motion blur looks different than normal. Makes the cymbals look all wobbly haha.
Baard sold me on this idea! Chinas always end up getting mixed to sound like a distorted crash anyways, and I have a tendancy to break all my chinas all the time
@@whophead6837 funny, I didn’t make any point to make the trash sound different- I figure it’s just mike hitting it differently at different points of the song
Not sure whether not it's just on my end, but the video and audio don't seem synched. It looks like you're hitting everything about a quarter second after I hear it. Either way, fantastic job 🤘
@@not_caroll I know and it's a shame cause if there is one thing I look at play through being a drummer is how a player attacks the kit. Watching their motion around the set, it is so key. The approach and the way the player flows over the kit is definitely key. :) Love his playing either way. Just some food for thought :)

This makes me want to learn drums... Play for 20 years, and still be no where this good. Incredible. Absolutely incredible.
Brought here by Adam Steel. Watched him mixing this on his live stream(s). Fantastic playing and I got to learn a lot from Adam.
Ooh daaman. I totally forgot to watch that video😂😂. Just realized it after watching your comment 😅
So god damn good, always enjoy how much fun you're having when you play
Mike's recovery from his back injury has only made him stronger - he always looks like he is having so much fun playing these technical parts!

That hi-hat on-the-fly adjustment while playing, you're absolutely insane!
