Mike Malyan - "Leviathan" by Monuments - Drum Playthrough

- This video was recorded in 1 take.
This week I had lots going on, so I made do with a take with a few fill-blunders. There are 2 fills that are edited in the whole track, everything else is natural.
There are some snare and room samples for added thiccness. Natural tones take the priority in this mix though. Huge thanks to Justin Woodward for such a sick mix, and as always thanks to Joey Aitchison for the Videos. Dream team!

This video was made from 1 single take. I did another take before this one, but I made many mistakes.
All of my other videos over the years feature extensive take-swapping and editing (time correction). I have decided that I'd rather post more honest covers, and encourage my listeners and viewers to hear what is actually being played.
The backing track to this video is made from the original stems that were made at the time of making the album.

Anup's probably watching this thinking "How does he play the drums without wearing a hoodie?!" Thanks for the weekly playthroughs, Mike, they are immensely appreciated!
The opposite is certainly true.
How can you play in a hoodie!!!??!?n INTERROBANG
did anyone saw how he fixed hi-hat while playing?
Well spotted! In the pre-breakdown you can see the hihat loosening and becoming extremely wide. Go ahead and look again at my super scared facial expression as it's opening up super wide.
Amazingly it kept just enough friction until right till the end of the build-up.. I think I only lost 1 or 2 chiks of the hat! Still enough to aggravate me but worth keeping in!
It blows my mind how consistent your playing is. Absolutely sick.
Leviathan was the first Monuments track I heard and prompted me to explore the rest of their catalog. I found my new favorite band and Leviathan is still in the top 10 for me but I'm so glad I found you. My biggest ache is still not finding the lyrics for Horcrux and Quasimodo. Unleashing Andy and Mike with Lavos has been a culmination of awesomeness that I don't think I'll see rivaled soon. The way Browne gets so aggressive on the chugs ramps the adrenaline so hard!
Dude you are very quickly rising through my ranks of drummers... I'm annoyed I only found your name not long ago... Love it dude and please keep the current line up in monuments going for a album atleast :) Andy is beastly and you guys are in final form :)
3:21 that cymbal mute was SMOOTH
Love these videos brother 🤘
Love that song ! And what an awesome and inspiring playing dude
Awesome work dude! Every performance has me waiting for the next!!
So cool to have all the uploads from you Mike, thank you! Awesome drumming, as per.
I seriously love watching your drum playthrough videos. Great seeing you back in the zone and kicking serious ass
Really impressive! Such a great performance of a sick song! lml You´re awesome!
One of my favorite Monuments tracks. Just love your playing Mike.
Good to see you well and kicking (on actual drums)! This song is my favourite from the album, both the guitar riffs and drums are so well tied together. I also really enjoy the vocals (which I realised when listening to the instrumental xD).
man, absolutely amazing, love the ghost notes. watching drummers play always amazes me
Love the fact that you’re taking the time to make sure the covers are as least edited as possible. Let’s us know that even the best make mistakes! ❤️❤️🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Your accents are able to transform a beast of a riff into an absolutely godly one! Truly inspiring stuff man. Thank you!
Holy Fuck!
Your so consistent!
And that snare sounds amazing
Oh man, HEAVY and groovy.....EXCELLENT!
How am I discovering this only now
Love your raw energy and the expressiveness of everything you play, it's like you know exactly what the song sounds like in your head.
I don’t know how I am just now finding this after a lifetime in loving metal and making music… but you sir, are sick with it! Instant sub and looking forward to hearing more from you! 🍻🤘🏻
hands down my favorite drummer dude! I loved your performance with David Micic in the Who Bit The Moon tour back in 2017
Immense!
Absolutely my fav song of that release! Keep it going Mike! (I never was that early :s)
So glad i found this
I love your style MR.Mike.
js. you're absolutely nutty. Those cymbal chokes were so perfect, especially for a first take.
Mike your awesome man, probably my favorite drummer, the sheer passion, precision and attention to detail makes me one happy man 👌
Hugh Kaatz
Awesome!
So good!
Men , so tight , clean , beautiful dj0nt groovie shit going on right there bro , i know almost every song of monuments on drums , i really enjoy the composition that u made on the band
Damn awesome !!!!!!
;) Nicely done. Great playing.
So good 🤙
Love the play through definitely will have to check out more stuff from monuments. I had heard your name through Tesseract from the portals shoe and was just wowed by your playing. Hopefully I could find some drum tabs from portals and try and play them, I’ve gotten down a groove from of matter-Proxy as best I could just by ear.
Soooooo groooooovy Mike!! Early stuff is just as groovy as leviathan, 98% static, Blue Sky Thinking and I, the Creator are a few
Nailed it. I thought you kept it in its original, meaty fashion, while giving it your style, win win.
Dude that was fucking nutty.
I made it 150 like..oh yeah..Mike you killing it!!!
Delicious !
Flawless hi-hat adjustment haha
ª
Holy, In this thumbnail I thought You reeeeeeally looked like Mike Portnoy in a ponytail😂
But your skills are next level dude
hell yeah. i wish bands would fucking release instrumental versions of their albums.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Lol, I just watched this video and was so impressed that I was going to say something in the comments, but then I saw that I already did 5 months ago 🤣
This creates euphoria in my everywhere.
Your the best frère
Gundam had a War in the Pocket. You got that DJENT in the pocket. LETS GO
🤘🙌🤘🙌🤘🙌🤘🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
hi wuja, nice cover
This would be a challenge for my Goldfish Brain.
You move around the kit like Matt Gartzka.
Beast mode Mike! :D Jukai or The Watch coming soon? ;)
I like the part with Mike
The guitar parts sound a little different to me! Is it a demo track? Sounds like they're live or a little faster even!
Brilliant drumming again! Fkin love this band to bits.
Fill at 4:13 sounds tiiiiiight bredrin
Damn dude, super clean. What is that off to the right, hats or a stack? If it's a stack, what is it? Sounds sick.
I have that same Logitech wireless keyboard + mouse combo for use with my Home Theater PC 😂
LMAO
How much free reign do you normally take with the parts from Phronesis? This versions sounds so sick, loving these uploads Mike!
I try to tow the line between honouring the original and doing what feels right to me
@@MalyanDrum I think you struck a good balance, this feels pretty different to the record version but still carries the energy and groove really well.
@@MalyanDrum the originals are hell boring, just do whatever you want mang
Keep that hat going bro
When you're both a djentleman and Howard Wolowitz \m/
John lennon
Holy shit this dude plays Monuments note for note!
