TMNT 2003 is what made me fall in love with the Ninja Turtles. For my generation its our Batman the animated series. I still have to read the comics. Never knew that the battle nexis started in this series. So many cool storylines. I thought the section with the Triceraton gladiator was cool and how he destroys the dictatorship by blasting that chair. Hope we get a complete series Blu-ray release box set of this amazing show. 10/10

How ironic. 4Kids was notorious for censoring the most intense scenes in popular anime series like One Piece and Yu-Gi-Oh! But here, with the beheadings, body horror and all, it's like it got away with it.

Well to be fair, Shredder had no real head to behead in the first place.
So, unless you were 5 years old or younger, I don't see how anyone could not have predicted his death end up being a cop-out as every "death" in cartoons at the time, before, and still long after were all cop-outs.

This show is *the* definitive adaptation of the Turtles for me. A lot of that is that it hit when I was 8 years old, and 8 year old me was huge into series like Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and TMNT (2003).
While my retaining of the series as a kid was very sporadic, the ones I tended to watch the most over and over again were the three episodes I had on DVD: "Meet Casey Jones", "Nano", and "Darkness on the Edge of Town". The first was a favorite of mine at the time since I enjoyed both Raphael and Casey in particular a lot in this series. Yet funny enough, as I grew up, I realized just how well made a story "Nano" is in particular, especially when getting a friend into the show and he got to see it all unfold for the first time, as we see an AI with the mind of an adolescent child get roped into a jewelry thief's scheme to strike it rich, but through a series of events becomes an uncontrollable and seemingly indestructible monster. The ending moments in particular between the heroes and the adolescent AI are still honestly heartwrenching for me to this day.
Even outside of those ones in particular, rewatching the series has been an absolute trip down memory lane and has introduced me to episodes I missed out on as a kid; it's amazing to see how well it all still holds up to this day.
On a side note, the PS2 games similarly kick ass and the second, Battle Nexus, is a childhood favorite of mine.

I still can't believe how far this version went with it's dark subject matter and yet it entertained me as a kid a lot. Although it's only through reviews like this and J Reviews that I really could appreciate how good it is and how weird it is to be made with the help of 4kids. Like don't get me wrong I am forever going to have a special place in my heart for all the shows and character they introduced me to but them helping to make a show this mature and dark is honestly so weird I feel like I stepped into a Mandela effect type of world and I am not mad about that.

Makes sense when the show got canceled while 4kids/WB were trying to make it more of a light hearted tone like the 87 show (Laird isn't a big fan of 87 either and he was the executive producer of 03). Nowadays, every TMNT adaptation has been based off of the 87 series, except for Rise, which is based loosely off of season 5 of 03.

I got to meet and talk with Kevin Eastman some years ago at a local con. He agreed with me that the 2003 show is the best adaptation of the og comic cause it was able to pay homage to it by using multiple parts of the comic’s story (as well as adding in things from the other media that came before) while still being able to be it’s own thing.
He also agreed that 2003 Shredder is the best version of the character and that while 2003 Splinter is a very good take on the comic version, he’s not the best one as that title goes to 2012 Splinter who showcased being a dad way more than 2003 Splinter.

Though you brought up the unproduced episode I'm shocked you didn't talk at all about the infamously banned episode 'Insane in the Membrane'. The episode that really pushed the limits of what they could do... and having a rotting clone body of Baxter Stockman deteriorating over the episode. Never thought we'd see cartoon body horror like that.

21:25 while I enjoy everything else about this show, this is the one thing I flat hate about it. Shredder being an alien is a horrible idea, especially when in this arc they established that he was doing genetic experiments via his "clones". The twist should have been Shredder was using stolen alien tech to build his empire and enhance himself. Basically a Shredder but with a Wolverine healing factor. If there was anyone that should have been the alien criminal in disguise, it'd make more sense for Bishop to be.

Like mostly everybody else in the comments section, I too am a gen z Turtles fan who grew up on this show. In fact, Fast Forward was my whole childhood introduction to TMNT to begin with and for the longest time I use to believe that this was the integral concept of the lore. Kind of like Batman Beyond or Spider-Man Unlimited (even though I never watched those shows). I use to think that the Turtles had always lived in a Fifth Element, futuristic, utopian New York City and their friends and foes would be a diverse cast of mainly aliens and mutant animals. I guess I just want to see a new Ninja Turtles show that just has this concept alone. That’s what I initially thought the fourth season of the 2012 show was going to be about, when the Turtles go into space, but that didn’t happen.
Years later when the 2012 show came out, I was of course intrigued to check it out and I liked how this new show was finally embracing CG animation like some other reboots in the early-mid 2010s. It didn’t really bother me, but then the show quickly started to make more references to the 1987 series and that made me want to go back and really check out the history of this franchise.
TH-cam now has both the 80s and 2000s TMNT shows to watch free on the platform. I first started by watching Turtles Forever (and Teen Titans: Trouble In Tokyo) on DVD one Saturday morning with a bowl of Froot Loops and I was instantly taken back to my later childhood years of the late 2000s. I knew that I had an older cousin who grew up watching the ’87 show because my grandma kept his Donatello toy from the 1989 playmates toyline in her house somewhere. I have a Raphael plush from the 2004 toyline and a 2007 TMNT Raphael toy figurine from McDonald’s Happy Meal.
I then saw the Turtle Power Documentary that talked about the history of the franchise and watched a great ton of the 1987 series on DVD and on TH-cam. Compare that to when I later binged the 2003 series again in 2015 and I was kind of left a bit disappointed knowing that there are some things the 80s show did better than the show I grew up with.
Again, I love the 2003 show more than any other iteration of the franchise but looking back, I kind of felt that something was purposefully lacking in that show that only became evident in Turtles Forever and was later fixed upon in the 2012 series. And that was basically what superhero movies in the 2000s struggled with; refusing or suppressing the fact that the Ninja Turtles are outlandishly silly concepts. Sure this show later embraced funny stuff but when this series ended with them meeting and basically bashing their previous iterations, I didn’t know what to make out of it really. And Nickelodeon for a while didn’t want to acknowledge what came before their newer CG iteration of the franchise. It was all for the expense of never talking or acknowledging the existence of that 4kids show ever happening. Or worse, replacing them with the 2010s version.
I now understand that all along, the 2003 series had a clear complete story with a definitive beginning and conclusion. Perhaps one of the only televised versions to have this. The other shows just had an ending that felt like it could’ve been a random story to still continue off from. I now look at the 2012 show and Rise as being two recent televised runs of the franchise that embraced what mostly came before while also revising or recontextualizing those narratives to tell a new fresh spin on it. Most of those concepts coming from the 2003 show like revising and retelling the Ninja Tribunal and Utrom Shredders origins at the end of ROTTMNT. It’s just like the MCU, although certain things like time travel and multiverse hopping I thought were done better in TMNT than whatever came much later in the MCU.

Another thing that works about this show is the voice acting I brought up Scottie ray as shredder but the ninja turtles themselves are perfectly casted you know why because they sound and feel like teenagers Rob Paulsen is cool when I hear his voice it doesn’t sound teenage to me even splinter has a kickass voice sounding wise and intelligent he truly feels like their father and I love this shows take on leatherhead it’s a little similar to the lizard from Spider-Man but I think it works better than generic reptile henchmen. My favorite turtle changes between the different iterations but I have favored two Donatellos, 2003 & Rise which is kind of funny considering how different they are but at the same time, they feel very similar like take a Donnie from another iteration, I feel like 2003 Don would be the angel on that Donatello's shoulder while Rise Donnie absolutely would be the devil. I adore both of these guys for similar & different reasons.
I did like Fast Forward, it felt like a refreshing break from turtles but it's still turtles, you know? I ended up binging way too much TMNT over the course of a month, FF was well needed during this. Too bad there wasn't a full series out of it, I would of loved seeing it. One of the things I feel we lost out on was seeing the evil clones slowly deflect like Leonardo's clone learning about being good & setting the example for his brothers with sharing, man, I would of liked to see where that would of gone.
An aspect I appreciated from FF that was touched upon in this video is the fact the turtles can walk freely, I love the whole living in the shadows thing but seeing them when they're use to being in the shadows being able to be out in the open is awesome! There's a summer short I enjoyed that also kind of rolled with this but the turtles disguised as humans to get into Pizza Friday at April's school & were acting weird which makes sense, they don't exactly have normal social skills. That's a thing I wish to have seen more often, at least with Rise, they also were able to do this with the Hidden City but it felt like they didn't do it enough. I guess if there was more FF, the novelty of them interacting with a normal world would definitely die down since they adjust to it, guess it would of been nice just getting one more additional season in the future just to be able to tie up everything in a more clean way & have a little bit more of turtles in public before returning.
With BTTS, I joked with my friend on that being the Cyberchase season, I didn't hate it & found it entertaining, I like when things are done differently. Maybe it's part of being overexposed to a lot of the same story within the span of a month, has me highly appreciating how different Rise is from everything else. I do like it when things are shaken up & BTTS did do things differently while still having the familiar scenery & characters, felt like a nice blend.
I still very much enjoy TMNT & like consuming the familiar story the different iterations tell since they are still different takes & there's surprises & wonder how they will do things differently. Maybe it was a mistake to watch season 2 of 03 at the same time as season 4 of 2012 given they both take place in space & while I like Professor Honeycutt's story more in 03, I prefer the personality of 2012 Honeycutt, he's got a little more of a bite to him.

Ch'rell is one of my absolute favorite villains, his voice especially, it's the number 1 thing for me.
Second is his head joke at stockman's expanse.
3rd is his backstory and lore.
    4th is his 1st design.
But all of these things work together.
But when i got my bestie into the show, she pointed out to me, and made me notice, just how badly he's written as a main villain who's supposed to be competent, outside of his self damaging hate boner for stockman.
I wanted for years before that to write a villain based on him without to stockman flaw anyway.
Me and the bestie enjoy mocking ch'rell together though, so that's good 😂 🙂

I do like a lot about 2003 - I prefer its characters over the 2012 interpretation, especially when it comes to characters like Raph and Casey. My biggest issue with 2003 is just how much it seemed to dragged. I was watching the show for the first time and only got through the first season because I kept getting annoyed with all the multi-part fight focused episodes. It just got boring after a while :/ I will eventually get back to it though, since when it's not dragging its still pretty enjoyable to watch. Also, I gotta ask: any plans to review Rise of the TMNT now that you've covered two other TMNT shows?
