I still remember the anecdote from the creators of the show when they made X-23. They had a meeting with the writers of the comic at the time to discuss their idea for the character and the writers stared at them and said 'we've been trying to do the same thing for about a year now'.

This is one of the few X men adaptations that treated Scott Summers and Jean Grey with respect. One of the few X men properties that depicted Cyclops as a capable badass leader and didn't portray him as just an asshole or emasculate him to make Wolverine look cooler. And its the only X men show that portrayed Jean Grey as an actual character with a personality and interest instead of just a plot device to drive out Scott and Logan's rivalry.

It does have one of my favourite Cyclops moments ever; when fleeing a military base he traps Mystique behind a door and threatens to leave her there if she doesn’t talk about what she’s done with Xavier. She laughs and calls his bluff…
…except he is very much not bluffing and leaves her there.
Ultimatum delivered, ultimatum followed through. Calculating and pragmatic without veering into jerkass like some recent Cylops portrayals

Surprisingly enough this iteration of the X-Men utilizes a lot of niche concepts from the X-Men comics. For the longest time I thought Nightcrawler's image inducer was something this show came up with. But it was introduced in the comics in 1975.

Agree this is the best version of Jean and Scott (especially Scott). I think their ages really helped because 1. Being the oldest kids, we get to see them act as leaders even with Xavier present, 2. Wolverine being an adult means no stupid love triangle raking up half their character arcs
(Yes, they have other love interests, but it doesn't eat up nearly as much of their personalities as other adaptations)

    • @ShadowSonic2

The crew has stated if they had a fifth season like what do the Phoenix arc and would’ve had Scott and rogue end up as a couple. They also wanted to show Professor X meeting magneto and losing his legs because they don’t like the comics version. But there’s one character I wish they had included Polaris mostly to show how magneto traded his three kids in different way, and have her basically be a loving, spoiled, sweet kind of girl, and the best way to show. It is her to use her magnetic powers on her siblings, building it up as their dad doing something terrible, but then calls her siblings two adorable nicknames

Honestly THIS is the X-Men cartoon I watched the most as a kid (well... teen anyway) that really got me into the characters as I think I was either a bit too young for the 90's show or never watched it at the right time to get into the plotlines. Again I do feel though you should like repost up your old "not available anywhere" old honest reviews like the one you did of the 90's show on your patreon. Like it'd be a good way to have more content up without having to do any more work... unless like you can't anymore cause it'd be content IDed or some crap which I'd understand but hope that wouldn't be the case with them.

I also not a fan of Season 1 finale. I feel that episode could have been better if they had go with Mr Sinister as the villain instead of Magneto, since doing experiments with mutants is more his thing than Erik, plus he and Scott have a backstory in the comics which, if adapted, could tie with the sub plot involving Scott finding his lost brother.
However, I don't see Magneto kidnapping mutants being out of character since what makes Magneto such a complex villain is that, while his goals are noble, his methods, the limits he's willing to cross to keep mutantkind "safe" and his ideology of mutant supremacy ultimately turns Magneto into the same monster that took his family from him.

I thought he was rather cartoonishly evil at points (Abandoning then brainwashing Wanda, making mutants fight eachother for supremacy, inciting mutant hatred, performing mad science experiments on baby Kurt, brainwashing mutants, etc) and lacked a lot of his usual depth to be a generic bad guy

I feel honored to say that I grew up with three X-Men cartoons that never let me down throughout my life. They helped me find myself as a nerd and taught me how to gain confidence. @@ShadowSonic2 False. Claremont's original plan for Nightcrawler was to have Nightmare, a Doctor Strange villain and extra-dimensional entity be his father.
That parentage was supposed to explain two keys things about Nightcrawler: His appearance and his weird teleportation abilities as the intermediate dimension he would have been going through (like shown in X-Men evolution) was going to be revealed as the Dream Dimension where Nightmare rules over.
That was the original idea, that idea was the first to be scrapped and that parentage was supposed to be revealed in the issue where Nightcrawler's backstory was first shown, which, lo and behold, is a Doctor Strange and X-Men Crossover in the 1980's annual.
That very issue instead introduced Nightcrawler's adoptive mother, Margali Szardos, who found him as a baby as well as the fact she found him right next to his DYING mother.
You can go check this yourself. All of this was revealed through the Eye of Agamotto, which only shows the truth.
At the time of that crossover taking place, Nightcrawler's biological mother has been certified dead for 21 years.
Only afterwards did we get Mystique and Destiny's introduction into the X-Men plot through Days of Future Past where their stupid actions create a dystopian future with most of mutantkind dead, including Nightcrawler who is one of the first mutants to die after Kelly's assassination.
Then 3 years after DoFP, Claremont revealed through elaborate prose Mystique's birth year which would have made her only 30 years old when Nightcrawler was previously stated to be 21. That's a 9 year age gap for what's supposedly an "always intended" parent/child relationship.
Claremont then proceeded to retcon his own birth year reveal yet he still had Nightcrawler bring up the fact one of his biological parents was certified dead 4 years after introducing that piece of the puzzle.
Claremont also always described Mystique's shapeshifting to be limited and on a cosmetics only level. He himself stated she was a woman in her base form, couldn't change her scent as Sabretooth and Wolverine could still know it was her in any of her disguises and had her struggle to maintain Nick Fury's form for more than few seconds just because he was taller than her. All of those power limitations were still present when Nightcrawler was already a fully grown adult.

There's two characters you forgot to mention that joins the cast later on and that's beast and iceman they start becoming integral parts around season 3 of the series. And I will agree I want to say Ororo Monroe is Milk toats but I think they have to depower her because I wouldn't necessarily call her the token black girl of the X-Men team she's integral part of every X-Men series that's out there It's just that I feel like a lot of the writers are scared to push her because of the fact that she manipulates whether that I think they're afraid of making her look so overpowered that they can't do anything with her and that's such a shame honestly but I wouldn't call the X-Men evolution storm boring though. I will agree like this is from one of the best adaptations of the X-Men and I love the way they can show rogue without her super strength and flight abilities which I thought that was such a plus because the X-Men movies act like they didn't know what to do with the character at all which kind of sucks but X-Men Evolution was like you can do a lot with Rogue and I did enjoy the transformation of Cyclops and Jean Gray into like these leaders of the X-Men and how they didn't push them to the back burner like the movies kind of did you know And I enjoyed the no love triangle or the Phoenix yet which makes sense because she's young I don't think you need that right now and honestly I enjoyed the fact that they gave us an original character with Spike and ex-23 it would be nice to see Spike in the comics though

This was certainly a fun way to revisit the X-Men though I do have two caveats.
One: Why was Kitty Pryde a Valley Girl? That came across as a weird decision even if I still think she's cute.
Two: Walk On The Wild Side. I get the whole female empowerment message but it felt like the show was doing that alright even without this episode. The music video is pretty 2000s in the worst ways too.

I honestly prefer this series over the 90s series. The 90s series just felt too much like a toy commercial. A well made toy commercial, but a commercial nonetheless.

A teenage Storm, and Wolverine would make NO Sense so them being the only adults makes sense. It does suck how Gambit and Colossus were all but sidelines though.

Yeah I greatly prefer the age distributions of these versions of the characters apart from maybe Kitty and Rogue being around the same age as Scott and Jean as in my head there’s a bit of bigger age difference but not too big maybe like 5 years
But I prefer Beast, Storm and Angel being older than the rest of the characters and it would just be dumb to have a teenager version of Wolverine
I see Beast, Storm and Wolverine as. Charles’ younger peers
