A talk by Kane Bennett and Kamil Orman-Janowski on the sound design and music of Path of Exile 2. Recorded at ExileCon 2023. For more information, please visit: pathofexile2.com/
32:19 - this is a masterpiece of a song; it is not nostalgic - it's the story we were born into, from it's beginning to it's inevitable. indiferent. cold. end.
I'm quite excited to play POE2 with the music on for the first time. I'll never forget the first time playing through Path of Exile, and realizing how much the music was a part of the overall experience. To me, the music was and is just as iconic, as other prolific games like Chrono Trigger & the Final Fantasy games.
When I started playing, the first thing I did was turn off all the music and environmental sound effects as much as possible so I could actually hear what was going on on the screen.
Love the talk, PoE 2 looks (and sounds) really good! As a sound designer is is lovely to hear from Kane Bennett, about his approach to sound and mixing in ARPG's. And to hear from the maestro himself, Kamil Orman-Janowski, is a treat!
It’s just so nice to see everyone in GGG being really passionate and excited about their work and doing everything with exceptional quality standards. In the meantime blizzard devs looks like they’ve been inside a torture chamber for years and finally got out and they are forced to say things to the camera what they don’t want to say.. It’s funny how the tables have turned over the years GGG is definitely one of the best studios there is in all gaming industry and they are rising the bar really high by showing a good example on how to make a great game. I’m so hyped for PoE 2!
Always love to hear Kamil's work. I do have a concern about the boss audio being below character audio, as I can imagine it might be hard to hear boss cues when I'm spamming out 10 spells a second.
10:31 Oh neat, Michael Collier did some work on PoE2. Considering that after a few PoE1 Leagues of Michael Collier doing music (from "Lake of Kalandra" to "Crucible", so that's... three leagues), then Kamil came back to do music for TotA, it makes me wonder if we'll get to hear more music from Michael Collier, for either PoE1 or 2.
11:12 Wait what was this video about? 22:00 This music reminds me a bit of music from Darksiders 2 (begining) and Prince of Persia (last sounds) 27:50 his face looks like just just shut up and listen what i did you will be satisfied. 32:15 how to make poe 1 player cry speedrun (from beauty and nostalgia)
Heck yea, I'm excited to see what they'll have cooked up for PoE2. Sound has always been a bit meh in PoE with some outliers, like the uber satisfying Frozen Enemy Shatter sfx
This is a smart game company. Taking everything they learned from POE and building a better game that's rich and amazing on day 1. Blizzard seems to take everything they learned and throw it out the window.
wooden weapons when dropped make more metaly sounds than metal weapons hitting the floor? mean the first weapon was way louder than the 2nd metal weapon? wth? xD
Guys: Please rethink elemental damage sounds. What was shown doesn’t have any character and when players have to cast something 10000000 times it amplifies generic sounds. I’d suggest listening to main elemental sounds on repeat outside of the game as if you were listening to that spec in the next room. Diablo 3 and 4 are great examples of completely forgettable combat sounds. Whereas elemental in D1 and 2 actually had character. Same goes for the gfx on elemental. Look to D2R and add to it. Much love The lightning specifically is quite dull. Think Raiden. Think charged bolt sounds from d1: first the cast sound and then a DiFFERENT on hit sound of being electrocuted. Also please be mindful of atmospheric sounds to create the mood. Replay D1. With the regular score there was creature sounds, echos, moans, torture sounds, to create a feeling of atmospheric immersion. This must be joined with a dark and mysterious story. Please also don’t make a generic orchestral score like d3/d4. Nobody cares or remembers them. It needs soul. D1 Tristram is continuously recycled because it was so memorable. If it was generic Diablo wouldn’t be what it is. The town music MUST be a reprieve from stressful combat, but not take away from the tone of that act. Town folk were all welcoming and part of your team along with a mysterious atmosphere. Monsters should also have taunt sounds or theme sounds. Compare Rakinishu from D2 vs the (rattlesnake)sounds of the same creature in D4. Ppl connect to those little things. Imagine if the StarCraft 1 ost was modern day orchestrated. It would have been forgettable. It’s a game and needs soul: not a movie. I could go on forever out landscapes about other critical things but I doubt anyone designing the game will read or care about this let alone the lead designers. Watch “the act man’s” review of banjo kazooie. He talks about other music creativity concepts in games. Another couple ideas: full zoom option for first person mode in town specifically. Also to right click npcs for story dialog detachment so you can listen but so you don’t just have to stand there like it’s still Diablo 1 in 1996 tech.
Also for the not enough mana. Evolve the concept. Consider a screen trigger of sorts to get the concept across to the player. Like a floating combat text of Low mana in different font in blue.
sound is so badly optimized in PoE that the second advice we give to low end players after "lower your settings" is "mute the game". The only thing I want from the sound design in PoE 2 is to never need to say that again, to be able to say to new players that it only used to be like that 40:15 yeah, me too
32:15 is so good!
witcher vibes
goosebumps

This will be an absolute treat the first few dozen playthroughs to hear all the different sounds.
Absolutely gorgeous!
My favorite talk from ExileCon 2023 by far! Kamil is amazing.
And Kane too
@@phinguyen6399 Well, yes. Just been a fan of Kamil's work for a while. But yes.

The part where the waves come crashing in from the side. Just wow, it looks amazing.
Poignant pieces like the one for Kingsmarch are what I love the most.
Looks and sounds awesome.
This probably the most interesting, fun & amazing vid on a team. Every one in the sound team is crazy creative. Love it!
Path Of Exile: THE only game, where I have music ON :)
Sound is one of the most underappreciated jobs... if done well, no one notices. If done mediocre/ bad, everyone notices.
32:16 goosebumps is coming... sooo beautiful
THE SCOTTISH druid
i most certainly know what im playing
This was an amazing talk! Can you imagine the act bosses music? Can't wait!
Damn this music is so good.
Kanes comment about having his wife help him make drowning sounds is hilarious and kinda morbid 😂

I'm gonna buy the juke box mtx just for that 32:15. Can't wait for listening that masterpiece in my hideout forever.
To say I cannot wait is underestimation
What an amazing talk! Super engaging all around
Sound makes games iconic. Love the detail.
This was amazing. Music and sound design are always my go to nerding topics. More please 😎
Amazing job!
The OST is fckin amazing!

40:15 yeah, me too
How can I be a beta tester?
9:16 why u did my dawg wrong
There a game called Lost ARK. I really love their character voice. They are very loud and sounds really impactful. i hope POE can do that too.
No need korean shit bro.i liked their game before but everytime they ruined them. And lost ark ruined already.
Кидаю деньги в монитор, но ничего не происходит!)
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I wish they had a real campaign with great story for people that don't like repetitive mapping like an idiot.
Just so sound doesn't cause slowdown is all anyone probably cares about.
D4 bad! Blizzard it`s dead!
path of exile 2 takes too long
Great things take time... This not D4...
@@KingOldSchool poe my fav game, only game that let me think hard what to do,what to upgrade, more advance than diablo ganes,i love it!!!😁
