We finally did it and so here it is!!! Wow this video really did take some time as we unfortunately lost a very important SD card. We hope you enjoy a bit of the journey up on the slipway. Although this video is not pretty, it’s the reality of owning a boat. Its not all fair weather sailing, whales, dolphins and rainbows. There are tears, triggers, high intensity moments but its all apart of the journey and it sure is what makes this lifestyle what it is, a challenge and for that we are grateful.
A little bit about us:
"The Mer & The Man is a marine conservation based project aiming to support the mission of greater worldwide ocean sanctuary and protection.
Our goal is to help shed light and encourage action on current global environmental issues the ocean is facing. These environmental issues will be the core of our conservation content within our adventure blog 'The Mer And The Man’. The issues we will be covering include; Plastic Pollution, The Fossil Fuel Industry, The Health Of The Great Barrier Reef, Ending The War On Sharks, and Education and Awareness.
A little bit about us… Emily is 21 and currently studying a marine and environmental science degree and is a passionate free diver and ocean conservationist. Sage is 21 and has lived on his dads boat for 10 years and has salt running through veins and a very enthusiastic way of being.
When we met we decided we wanted to live on the ocean together, go on crazy adventures and raise awareness about important issues at the same time. We hope we can help our viewers connect more with nature and encourage adventure wherever you decide to go in life.
If you’re enjoying our content don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE and hit the notifications bell to stay up to date with our videos.
We thank you all for the love and support on our journey.

• Pt.2 RESTORATION OF OU...
The most expensive boat I ever owned was the one I got for free, but the memories of the fun I had on her will never fade. Recycling old boats is the best way to see the world.
So, more than recycling the boat, all this work is the process of making the boat your own. So much work accomplished in just over a week, amazing. What is also inspiring is to see two young people so focused and committed to a project like this.
I think the audio got messed up on this one.
Thought it was just me hahaha
Same here checked my sound 4 times then decided it was not me
I was close the point of restarting my computer :)
If he would look up Whoismatt on his TH-cam Channel, he has a self help video on Audio. It is really great for stuff like this.
They may have had to remove it when the music was flagged as licensed, don’t want to pay all your hard earned advertising money to someone else! 😅
Late to the show but many of us talk about Work for It! You both have definitely done so! When saving the boat taught you about the necessary things to keep you safe while trying to save what you love but remember to listen to all sides when you face a challenge!
Very satisfying knowing you made this boat Sea Worthy~!
You may be thinking it’s a lot of work now but experienced gain is priceless. Especially knowing now how to repair your own boat.
Boats rot from the inside out--and this is true for all kinds of boats in salt water. It is the rain water ;leaking in to the hull and penetrating the deck plywood through tiny cracks that causes the problems glass boats do not have.
Another trick I used was to put swimming pool salt into the bilges. I like dry bilges, but this salt discourages insects and stops rot. If water gets in there, the brine will preserve any plywood it contacts. Only problem with briny bilges is the salt will attack any unprotected metal in there--so I used plastic or Tufnel wherever possible in bilges. Modern high density reinforced plastic and Tufnel is pretty damn good, and all of my water pipes were HD plastic blue stripe--and my hot water system used plastic coated copper pipes, but you may not need a hot shower for a while. When you do--think SOLAR.
Wow guys i’m impressed with not only how much you guys got done but how well it is all coming out keeep it up and you will be enjoying the greatest lifestyle out there IMO i call it the Dream so many people dream , read , sing about living on a boat yet so few get to do it
Beautiful video. I've watched many of these. The key to success of your channel is going to be showing the not so glamorous parts of your journey. Showing the things you think people don't want to see. That is what we want to see the most. We want to see your hardships and also your milestones. Good luck with your build.
"Pearl" is a great name. I hope when you're grooving on some tropical islands, you will extend her name to "Sweet Pearl."
not surprised he just wanted to be rid of it - that's a lot of work and stress for you guys too. You'll come out ahead because you will know your boat inside and out. And those new skills you will use forever. By the looks of your 'pencil' work you are pretty new to building things - you're off to a great start! Good luck! And you are learning the right lessons early - do it right and get 'er done.
'not surprised he just wanted to be rid of it' ! I HAD a 1963 Ford F-100 pickup truck that was a gas guzzler and high on maintenance. It would get a compliment or two every time I drove it to the grocery store. But the feeling of relief since I sold it is amazing! (I got a little more that $1.00 for it).
The Tyler's of the world truly make the world go around. He has the knowledge, skills, and the willingness to make things happen.
Don't give up, more you work yourself in your project more you love it more you appreciate it, more you know your boat, better you are prepared to tackle in the future.
Well done you guys, and gals, that's some real repair and dedication.
Sitting in my boat at midnight in theUK, its completely still outside, like a mirror. My dogs asleep and I will be too soon.
Boat life is life at its fullest.
Good luck , keep going, fair winds
Until a force 9 gale happens by . . . . (North Atlantic 1972) . . . .
@@richardhobbs9038 Fastnet 1979!!!.
Having rebuilt two sailboats myself I am impressed by the fact you have not walked away. But rule of thumb is whatever you think the repair will cost multiply by 4 and you are pretty close. Nothing about boat is cheap, even for a 1$ boat.
I am most impressed by the way you fixed this in a two week haul out! Way to go guys!!
Looking really good....
Get it all out now ...
Always monitor & jump on any spots but ALWAYS ENJOY THE JOURNEY & have FUN...cheers
Peter Starkey yes indeed! We got it all out. And are very glad we did. The journey is well and truly underway and making way 🤣
I subscribed @ 5.30. I understand the wish to be ecologically friendly and everything that we as individuals can do is great. To hear you acknowledge that your boat is made of plastics, polymers, glass, petrochemical by-products and is not "GREEN" is refreshing. We can use technology to be more self-sufficient and reduce our individual impact. Thank you for at least being honest.
WOW! Lots of hard work, but you will know your boat well after this!
One Life, One Search,
Shane
My family had a boat once called black pearl. Your boat is so beautiful that you two are caring for it. Like your children will be someday.
I am glad to see someone with a measure of idealism trying to make this world a better place. Please just ignore the naysayers and do your own thing the way you want to.
I believe the term he was looking for was “SCRIBE TO FIT”, when drawing out, and cutting the plywood...lol. FUN WATCHING YOU TWO & YOUR PROJECT. I’m reminded of the movie “Blue Lagoon”...
Your a smart young couple. Thank you for your films. Back in 1983. Port Canaveral dry dock. I restored a 1929 ketch . made it a live aboard. Not like you have today. Very primitive. Tristian Jones is and was my favorite sailor. Before youtube, and social media. He wrote about all his travels. Look him up. Again thanks for your love of the life. Tim Sr
You have a crew member along with you. Well virtually. I am going to be living vicariously through you guys. I just found your channel and I really respect what you are doing.
Just watched the episode--you are really doing it properly. I do not know if this is helpful, but I used a Chlorinated rubber barrier coat over the hull paint, then I put one coat of hard antifoul of a dark colour over that, in my case a dark red, then on top of that two coats of softer blue antifoul self-ablating. When I saw red I booked the slip. That is about every two years or so depending on where you are. The good thing about multihulls is one can beach them and scrub the slime off the hulls before it becomes a problem.. One thing you need to watch in the tropics is Teredo worm. Another is lightning. I used to hang a plate under the mast on a chain or cable between the hulls whenever I left the boat at anchor--with a copper plate about a half metre by a metre. That was separate entirely from the earth plate for the radio, radar, and anything else.
I think you are going to have a GREAT time on this boat--and you will not lose any money when it comes time for a larger boat--if it ever does--
i bought one of those saws with twin blades that turn in opposite directions. It has a depth gauge. I found it useful in cutting out rot. easy to manage, and the depth can be set to cut only the plywood or glass. It cuts sheet steel as easily. Only a cheap one--I think I paid about eighty bucks for it.
Good to see your passion for the ocean drew you both to sailing. My thanks to you both for sharing the restoration.
i like to watch a 1$ boat refit and restoration, very interesting🤩
Likewise. I'd like to see more. Do you have more footage of the process that got edited out?
Also, you guys have done in 9 days, what usually takes people years. Congrats on the hardwork
I don't know why half the video doesn't have audio but this is a great reference for fixing up a boat. Saving :)
So good tribe. Big love to you 💚💚💚. Honouring your dedication, work ethic, and commitment to your mission, craft, and creation 🌊⛵💙
restoration of this boat is the best video for me.
admirable work and determination. Let this boat reward you with faithful service.
That tradesman knew his stuff.
Tip for oiling deck next time, use a soft broom, and paint roller tray, i do a lot of decking painting and the broom saves your back.
I
An amazing young couple they deserve good luck in the future.well done
Part #1........ We all have to start somewhere.. congrats!
I'm very impressed with the patch work. For Rockies it looks like it came out very fair.
My mother 73, loves his six pack !
you have to Love Tyler he is a true Boat Legend and a great Advertiser as a true Ozi Block!!!
I am just letting you know that if you spay Flex Seal® Liquid Commercial on the hull from water line down, and do the inside of hull you will never get a leek and it makes the hull very strong .
Fantastic work in just nine days well done
Hi , if you need to clean off any epoxy off your hands , use vineger , it works !
badass! I loved how you two worked on the boat to make it your own!
Il serait bon de mettre aussi une toile de verre à l' intérieur pour rigidifier l'ensemble ...
It would be good to also put a glass cloth inside to stiffen the whole
Well done for all this work and finding a catamaran for $ 1 is exceptional, its former owner is really very nice ... !!
You dont make square corner cuts when repairing glass. But it's cool your able to fix up and restore an older boat to sail 9nce again
Plastic and glass is fine as long as it is not single use throw away . Using stuff that lasts for your home reduces the footprint of maintenance and replacement
After 11 minutes the explanation start!
You also can add subtitles, so that we know why and how you did what you show us. Especially the materials used. I don't mind the tone missing especially too loud background music. Thanks! :-)
Nice work. Your ambition has captured my imagination and I look forward to seeing your adventures in the future. Keep up the good work.
another channel to watch about working on a boat yay. going next week to look at a boat that needs work but if i have to work on the hull much I'm gonna walk away from it. I'll be sitting around waiting for part 2.
deathwarp131 thanks for tuning in mate. If we could give any advise consider wether or not it’s worth it to recycle a boat and give it a new life instead of letting it rot or for the work that needed doing to never get done. As you can see you can get a bargain if there’s still work to do! ✌️🧜♀️🧜♂️😆 take care and get a survey 🤣
But it's really fun watching ur vids, We love ur mayoral way and fist type adventure, it's cool , and ur simple , honest personalitys ,Make more vids soon, OK? U go guys !! Lar Bear !!!
Holy cow....so much to do!!!
Tyler is a gifted magician. Amazing work guys! Congratulations to the whole team, recycling at it's best. 🙌🏾 🙌🏾 🙌🏾 🌟🔥✌🏽️✨🌞🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
One other note you might think about, WHY did you have such rot, and what can you do to keep it from happening again.
Indeed. Thanks for you comments! It was just a sealant issue where the bolts go into the hull
Great video!.. Thank you for sharing
great!! But instead of plywood and epoxy and steel screws, why dont you you use palm leaves, bamboo rods and pine resin???????
Funny to take such good care of those pencil lines only to cut it out with a jigsaw.
Technically you "refurbished" the boat vs recycled. I could see the pain you endured using those materials. I experience the same feelings when I shoot the game I love to eat. Funny how/where we each draw the line on our convictions when our desires interject.
Awesome job guys! Definitely a lot of work and money but it will all be worth it in the end when you know the ins and outs of everything and are travelling the world in your baby 😁
Tosh :D thank you! Yea it has been a lot of work. But she’s becoming more of a seaworthy vessel everyday! Hope you liked the vid :) ✌️🧜♂️🧜♀️
The Mer & The Man . Awesome 👏. Are you vegan ✅. You should be vegan ✅❤️🌎👍. It’s easy to be a vegan. You can save money on a vegan diet. TH-cam delicious vegan food, really easy. And no murder, and win situation ✅😃👏👍 and you can plant it on your catamaran ✅❤️🍠🥬🍃 sweet potatoes 🍠, and sweet potato, cooking 🍃😋. Very tasty 😋
Was looking forward to this video, was not disappointed, thanks
Solla Sollew we’re glad you like it! We’ve got some epic content coming 🤙👍🧜♂️🧜♀️
COST OF BOAT: $1 (AU)
EXPERIENCE: Priceless
Like the new name.Pearl sounds great. Good job there
Also how much did your rott repair actually cost all told at the end
You guys have no idea of the experiance and education you are now getting. There will be other Tyler's in other areas of expertise and in different locations. Talk to these people and listen, and question everything. You guys are so on the right path! Good luck to you!
Yeah it's was like a cert 3 course working with tyler. He was an emense help to our knowledge and understanding. Yes indeed we have met alot of other people to that have been teaching us.
All the best mate
Thanks for watching
That's the good thing about these yachts they can be repaired easily, great work you guys! She's looking good :-)
And they break a up easily at sea, don't go there, that type of boat gave multihulls a bad reputation.
@@grancito2 The design and professional build was fine, the problem was the DIY ones, some very good but some rather bad, built by those with more enthusiasm than skill , and the bad ones give you the reputation, just saying don't condemn them all.
Traditionally it is said that, "A boat is a hole in the water lined with wood, aluminum, plastic, or fiberglass into which you pour money."
But life is short -- follow your heart -- at the end of your life most endeavors will not be profitable and that does not matter.
The list of regrets you have at the end of the ride will enumerate those things you did and regret -- and those things you did not do and regret.
The balance will far and away favor those things you did not do.
Try everything that comes to mind and sink those who tell you not to try.
Thanks for your words mate. So true . Everything is a risk in some sense why not take the tight ones I say!
Hey just so you know when you try and chrome cast your videos to another device like a TV or something the sound doesn't work. It's a common issue with other channels but would be worth fixing. Yew
thanks for the update we will look into it !
I know nothing about boats but isn't using ply wood for the hull a bit sketchy? I can't imagine it lasting very long before needing to be repaired again. I'm guessing fiberglass is the best material for hulls.
Your compromise of earth consciousness to restore this boat is beautiful! It's awesome that the glass industry is finally starting to search ways to be more environmentally conscious!
ya. paint it it its gonna looks good
awesome job Sage Emily Tyler Catlin and of coarse me. Let the adventures begin.
Good job on the vid. I certainly Want you to succeed. Watching to see how it goes. The refinished deck looks grand!😍
Well.... here I am again (car guy) ...looking backwards a little bit. I wanted to see where the repair journey began after watching her go into the water in the "first" (for me) video I just watched....Now I am finding myself enamored with your mission and what you are trying to do. As an old guy and weirdo, I wanted to point out to you that in your mission to help the oceans you will find that modern chemicals and materials and what you would normally consider polluants are necessary "evils". Try to keep your vision focused on what you intend to accomplish, not what you are currently forced to do. I myself think that the term "conservationist" is much more fitting that "environmentalist" when it comes to trying to clean up the mess that we have made of this planet we call home. In my mind an "environmentalist" is someone that goes out and tries to stop everything that uses the resources we need in our modern society. While a "conservationist" seeks to integrate their needs and desires into the use of the resources needed to live in the current time. There is always a balance that you must find for your own peace of mind. You two are truly beautiful people and I want to see you succeed. Try not to beat yourselves up too much when it comes to having to use Harsh and sometimes potentially harmful resources. What you accomplish in the long run will more than make up for the poluttants that you had to use to get there. Balance in all things. Peace to you my new unmet friends. You have a new sub.
Good on you for finding Tyler! Mega score there. Emily, you are allowed to have emotional breakdowns. We all do. What you two are doing is AWESOME and lets be honest stressful. I'm proud of you both!
Looks good so far.you done well
Fantastic job, hope we see you in an anchorage for a beer
Best of luck with the boat!
Tommy thanks mate she’s turning into a great boat!
It's a shame that the audio is butchered because I would have liked to have a better understanding of what is going on!
If you can fix the audio then I'll re-watch the chapter of the boat restoration.
Very entertaining, thanks for sharing.
very cool guys, cool restoration of a wharam always cool, greetings from lucky fish
Where’s the guard on that side grinder?
Looking amazing guys, keeps at it and your dreams will soon come true
Yea it was some really hard work but all for a great cause!
@@TheMerTheMan what exactly is the cause?
Plus now you saved a boat.
Why was there rust on the boat, if it is made of wood? Which screws did you use?
I hope you're using bronze or copper bolts otherwise you'll end up with the same problem again ???
Great video...glad u got it for a dollar.....the whole subject is awsome...I love the ocean myself...I'm all for recycling....but saving the ocean is a bit self righteous
Looking good!.
good work and god bless, another boat being saved!
Yes I know right! More boats need saving!
Good on ya. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. Patience comes in handy.
i dont want to be critical cause i think you are doing an awesome job, but i noticed the skeg and the inboard side of the port hull are green indicating that you used a polyester resin, the bow was done in an epoxy resin, was the boat originally built in epoxy or polyester? Just as an FYI - epoxy bonds to polyester , but polyester does not mechanically bond on top of epoxy. Keep up the good work.
I see where your coming from. But we didn't stray away from using epoxy resin we did the whole boat with epoxy west systems as that is what it was
These chaps must have some money coming from somewhere They don't have a regular job just repairing this boat. Must be nice.
You will probably find more people like these sorts of videos over sailing around looking at dolphins
You guys are pretty cool to watch...you are one VERY good looking woman...keep up the great vids...
Nice one you guys 👍💋🇬🇧
Ive watched some channels at least they are doing it correctly.
Never knew wood is used as sheeting on outer hulls. I always thought its fibre/glass sheets.
Watching. Dry land for me
whats with the sound cutting out??
never change the name of a boat. also no bananas on a boat either
Up-Cycling, Awesome !! Subbed.
Looking forward to your Vision Realized !
Why oh why oh why do people use angle grinders without a guard, you see it all the time on TH-cam, my grinder had its proper guard and side handle but when the disk nipped just as the cut was finishing it was ripped from my hands and sliced the back of my hand to the bone and cutting two tendons, three years on and recovery is as good as it will get, fortunately almost all mobility has been restored but the six inch scar is still there and it hurts far more than the other hand if I knock it, it also aches with the weather, my first accident in nearly forty years and it has changed my life. Watching the young lady with that thing makes me shiver, don't use it like that, if it cuts free with no guard you will be losing fingers. They are really useful but can be very dangerous.
