Jesus celebrated the Passover with His disciples on Tuesday evening. After the meal He went to the Garden and prayed. That night he was arrested and beaten. Wednesday morning he was before Pilot and was then crucified on the Passover day. That is why Jesus is our sacrificial Passover lamb, without spot or blemish. Jesus was crucified at the same time lambs were being sacrificed in the Temple. Not a coincidence.

Jesus was resurrected on Saturday, the weekly Sabbath, Just before sunset. That is why Mary arriving at the tomb, on Sunday morning, while it was still dark, saw that the stone had already been rolled away. That Sunday was the first day of the feast of first fruits. Jesus was the first fruit of the resurrection. Jesus fulfill all but one of the feasts of the covenant. Just one more feast to fulfill....his return.

(I will destroy the temple and rebuild it on the third day) but for the Sign of Jonah three days and three Night it counted from the day Jesus betrayed and sold by Judas( Human being- that made up of Clay"Earth") in Thursday (day 1n night 1), died on Friday (day2 n night 2), Sabbath (day 3 n Night 3) Then resurrection come Sunday morning just after the night 3.

It was three days and three nights. Don't look to traditions, go to Genesis 1 for a full understanding of what a day is. Jesus was crucified on Wednesday and buried before sunset which started the beginning of Thursday. According to Scripture a day is evening to evening.

@@JesusismyGOD He is the Passover lamb but a Passover lamp was never slaughtered on the day of Passover. It had to be prepared the day before. So based on that context, it's easy to see that there is no way he could have died on Passover. Even in Egypt, the children of Israel had to prepare for the Passover before it happened by putting blood on their doors. The principal is the same just depicted in different ways. Daniel 9:26 has multiple applications like everything else in the Bible and one of the applications is that Jesus will be cut off or killed in the middle of the week just like it also refers to his ministry being cut off as well. The middle of the week is some time on Wednessday afternoon.

Lets make it Simpler. Jesus was crucified on a Wednesday, before the High Sabbath (Joh 19:31), of the 1st day of Unleavened Bread, on Thursday.
Women bought the spices on Friday (MK 16:1), resting on the regular sabbath of Saturday.
Jesus rose just before Sunday, while it was still dark.
All this adds up to 3 days and 3 nights

Inthe Torah, God gave the Jews specific information to follow. The Passover Week was a yearly Feast..one of seven Feasts that they kept yearly.
During the Passover Week there were two Sabbaths, the regular Saturday or 7th day Sabbath, and a High Sabbath which fell on the Thursday or the 5th day.
On the Wednesday or the 4th day, a lamb was slain, and the blood was taken into the Holy of Holies and sprinkled onto the Book of Law, and the Mercy Seat; where God resided. This blood sacrifice was used to take the sins of Israel away.
The following day was Thursday the 5th day, the High Sabbath, then Friday the 6th day, and then Saturday the 7th day or weekly Sabbath.
In the Gospels the Jews were mocking Jesus and asked to see a sign, after he had already done thousands of signs.
Jesus said, I'll give you the sign of Jonah, as he was in the belly of the big fish, for THREE NIGHTS AND THREE DAYS, so shall the son of man be in the heart of the earth for THREE NIGHTS AND THREE DAYS. Jesus was explicit about THREE NIGHTS AND THREE DAYS.
If Jesus died on a Friday at 3pm and the Sabbath stars at 6pm they had just a couple of hours to put him in the tomb, because it would be a curse to have anyone crucified still on the cross during the Sabbath.
So from Friday 6pm to Saturday 6pm is one day. From Saturday 6pm to Sunday 6pm are two days..so where is the third day? It doesn't work out
But, if Jesus died and entombed on Wednesday, now there are three days before the first day of the week when Mary went to the tomb..
The Torah teaches about the two Sbbath Passover Week, and Jesus said, three nights and three days in the earth.. and there you go.. to God be the Glory

I don't think that's right as the High Sabbath was when the 7th day sabbath co-incided with another sabbath, that's why was called a 'High sabbath'. 3 days and 3 nights - need to remember evening and morning is 1 day - there is no definition anywhere that this must be 24 hours. 1st night/day time was Christ on cross - He died during darkness over the whole world (3 hours), then sun came back (daytime 1). Evening Saturday came and Saturday day (daytime 2). Then there is evening and morning Sunday (daytime 3). So there you have it.. 3 days and night times before Christ rose again.

This makes no sense biblically. Jesus died in the middle of the week which was right before the ending of Wednesday (Daniel 9:27) since they had to bury him before the holy convocation sabbath day of rest (John 19:31) and resurrected on Saturday (sun down) which is 72 hours ( 3 days and 3 nights Matthew 12:40) literally right before the first day of the week started which is Sunday. Therefore when they went looking for him on Sunday after the weekly sabbath rest (which was from Friday evening to Saturday evening) he was already risen. Math counts here let’s not take it lightly.
Conclusion: Jesus DID NOT die on Friday or resurrect on Sunday. RATHER Jesus died on Wednesday and resurrected on Saturday.
Peace to everyone hope this helps. Don’t be afraid to question other teachings and go to the source of scripture to find your answers. May the God of Israel bless you all.

Yechezkel Mendoza WRONG. Friday Crucifixion -Jewish people in the First Century considered a portion of one day to be an entire day. Since Jesus was in the tomb for part of Friday, all day Saturday, and a portion of Sunday, this is considered to be three days. Mark 15:42 says that Jesus was put to death "the day before the Sabbath." If this is referring to the weekly Sabbath (which is Saturday), then Jesus would have been crucified on Friday. And the Hebrews could not work on the sabbath so they came very early Sunday morning the women did to add the spices at the tomb and Jesus had arisen

He died and was buried just before sunset Wednesday 31AD and rose Saturday just before sunset. Wednesday Jesus died on the daylight part of Passover and was buried before Sunset. Thursday was the High Day - First Day of Unleaved Bread - which was an annual Sabbath that always began the day after Passover (days were reckoned sunset to sunset). Friday was a non-Sabbath between the annual and weekly Sabbaths. Then there was the weekly Sabbath. When the women arrived while it was yet dark Sunday morning and scripture says Jesus had already risen from the tomb. It does not say he rose on Sunday morning. Three days and three nights would bring us to Saturday afternoon resurrection. The Roman guards are already gone into the city and an angel had said He has already risen. One big key to understanding is these two verses:
    Mark 16:1
16:1 Now when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him
    NKJV
    Luke 23:56
56 Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.
    NKJV
Notice the two verses. How can the women prepare spices before the Sabbath (Luke 23:56) and yet not buy them until after the Sabbath (Mark 16:1)? The answer is they waited until after the annual high day Sabbath on Thursday. On Friday they bought and prepared the Spices. Then they rested again on the weekly Sabbath. The only way these two scriptures do not conflict is that there had to be two Sabbaths and a non-Sabbath day between them while Jesus was in the grave.

@@larue085 The preparation day when Jesus was buried was not a preparation day for a weekly Sabbath. It was a preparation day for an annual high day Sabbath (John 19:31). Scripture says Christ would be cut off in the midst of the week (Dan 9:27). He died on Passover (14th of Abib) and one day after Passover was an annual Sabbath. The First Day of Unleavened Bread always came one day after Passover on the 15th of Abib (Lev 23:5-7). It was a Sabbath of Holy Convocation and non-work day that landed on Thursday that year.

    • @keithelrod777
      @keithelrod777 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Today's church also has the day of the Resurrection wrong as well. It was NOT on easter Sunday. The Bible expresses Resurrection Day in three different ways. I have several videos on an array of topics, but here are the three ways the Bible expresses Resurrection Day in a nutshell, not in an egg shell, ha!!! The first way is He Rose on the "Third Day". We read this 11 times in the New Testament (Matthew 16:21, 17:23, 20:19, 27:64, Luke 9:22, 13:32, 18:33, 24:7, 24:21, 24:46 and 1 Corinthians 15:4). Jews/Hebrews count all their days by numbers, except for the only One with a Name, being the 7th Day, the Sabbath. So the "Third Day" is (Sunday 1st, Monday 2nd) is Tuesday using today's day of the week names. The second way the Bible expresses Resurrection Day is that He will be 3 days and 3 nights in the heart of the earth, as the Messiah said Himself in Matthew 12:40. Reading John 18:28, John 19:14, 15 and John 19:31 we see the Christ being Crucified on the 6th day, and put in the Tomb before 6pm that night, which began the Passover Sabbath. Yes, the Passover in on the Sabbath. The year just began in Nisan (Abib) 1, the Passover is on Nisan 14 (Leviticus 23). If Nisan 1 is Sunday, the first day of the year, then do the math, the 14th is a Sabbath. But just reading the three John Passages makes it very clear. I have a video on the Passover that explains the three contradictory Scriptures to John, they are referring to Exodus 12:3, which says that the Passover/Unleavened Bread activities begin on Nisan 10, with the choosing of the Lamb. So the second way is He was in the Tomb/heart of the earth for 3 days and 3 nights, so in the Tomb for Saturday, Sunday and Monday, Rising on Tuesday the "Third Day". The third way the Bible expresses Resurrection Day is "on the first day of the week" (Matthew 28:1, Mark 16:2, Luke 24:1 and John 20:1). This is why we think it is Sunday. BUT if you are familiar with Leviticus 23, the 7 Feasts/Holy Convocations, I have an Amazon book on this topic, you will see that the Messiah Rose on the "first day of the Week" of Week 1 of the 7 Weeks of 7, the Feast called Weeks. The 7 Weeks of 7 is the last and 7th Feast from Leviticus 23, because the Hebrew New Years Day is at Trumpets in the Sabbath Month as stated in Leviticus 25:8-13. Resurrection Day, called First Fruits, is Day 1 of the 49, and perfectly enough it is also on a Tuesday!!! Now some may say, Leviticus 23 says First Fruits is the Day after the Passover Sabbath, because Leviticus 23 does say that the sheaf of the first fruits is waved the day after the Sabbath, which is Nisan 15, because the Passover Sabbath is the 14th, Nisan 15th is the start of the Unleavened Bread Week, which is totally correct, at the start of all 3 required Feast Weeks the sheaf of the first fruits is always waved on the first day of the Feast Week to commence the Feast. The First Fruits actual Day is learned by the many times that the Messiah expressed His Resurrection day, and through the many Verses shared above. In 1 Corinthians 15:20-23 we also see the Christ mentioned as the First Fruits twice.

People in today's church throw around the term, He rose on the third day. The third day is mentioned many times in Scripture for His Resurrection Day. But today it is distorted. They teach a Friday Crucifixion and call that the first day, then in the Tomb for Saturday, calling this the second day, then Sunday morning, He Rose on the third day. This is really way off. Modern day Jews chuckle at today's Christians over this. We preach that the Messiah was in the Tomb for 3 days and 3 nights as Jonah, just like Matthew 12 says. But with today's bad third day teaching, a Friday afternoon Crucifixion, and an early Sunday morning Resurrection, only puts Him in the Tomb for 1 1/2 days at the most. This is the point we miss: The third day is referring to the day of the week, Sunday the first day, Monday the second day, and Tuesday the third day. The Messiah fulfilled all 7 Feasts/Holy Convocations from Leviticus 23. We teach on only 2 today. He was in the Tomb for Passover, without sin, without leaven for Unleavened Bread, and He Rose on First Fruits Tuesday, the third day. First Fruits is Day 1 of the 49 days of the 7th and Last Feast called Weeks. Weeks was 7 Weeks of 7 or 49 Days, when the Risen Christ appeared to even up to 500 at one time, proving that He not only conquered sin (Trumpets, Day of Atonement, Tabernacles) but sin and death (Passover, Unleavened Bread, First Fruits and Weeks). Hallelujah!!!

Jesus Rose on the first day of the Week of Week 1 of the 7 Weeks of 7. Jesus Christ Rose on Day One of the 49. Jesus Christ Rose on First Fruits Tuesday, the Third Day. The Third Day of the week is Tuesday, Sunday 1st day, Monday 2nd day, and Tuesday the Third Day of the week. The Bible also says He was 3 days and 3 nights in the heart of the earth (Matthew 12:40). He was Crucified on Friday the 6th day, and in the Tomb for Saturday, Sunday and Monday, Rising on First Fruits Tuesday. All 3 ways that the Bible expresses Resurrection Day lead to Tuesday. Awesomely enough in Genesis 1:9-13 God saw it was good twice on the Third Day of Creation!!! The first miracle of Jesus Christ was at a wedding in Cana on the Third Day as well!!!

    • @GenevaPilgrim
      @GenevaPilgrim 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Do not interchange words here. The word is not "grave" of the earth, it is "heart" of the earth. The greek word is "Kardia" where we get our word "Cardiac" for things relating to the human heart. the definition is: the heart; mind, character, inner self, will, intention, center
And every single time it is used in the New Testament (158 times to be exact) is is referring to the heart of man. Even this exact spelling of heart is used 54 times and ALWAYS refers to man's heart. So to think that only ONE time it means in the grave despite the fact that Jesus said he would rise on the third day is forcing a square peg into a round hole.
Jesus himself defined what a third day is in Luke 13:32-33
"But Jesus replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘Look, I will keep driving out demons and healing people TODAY and TOMORROW, and on the THIRD DAY I will reach My goal.’ Nevertheless, I must keep going TODAY and TOMORROW and the NEXT DAY, for it is not admissible for a prophet to perish outside of Jerusalem."
But the prophesy of the 3 days and 3 nights is for who? The wicked and adulterous generation.
And who did he speak in parables to so that they could not discern? the Jews-pharisees and high priests, sadducees etc. who did not have discernment.
(wicked and adulterous generation who demands signs)
Jesus has been and will continue to be in the Kardia of the earth until he the end of the third day.
      These verses are related:
"Beloved, do not let this one thing escape your notice: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day." (2 Peter 3:8)
"Come, let us return to the LORD. For He has torn us to pieces, but He will heal us; He has wounded us, but He will bind us up. After TWO DAYS He will revive us; on the THIRD DAY He will raise us up, that we may live in His presence." (Hosea 6:1-2)
It's been almost 2 days...(2030 it will be a full 2 days) and in the third day he will return and reign for 1000 years on the earth (that will be the third full day) and then the earth will be no more for there will be a new heaven and a new earth. (not that I'm setting dates here-he might come a few years earlier or later...Peter said he might tarry)
Don't be the wicked and adulterous generation who demands a sign and will not get one. Be the discerning generation that believes the word of God that says 8 times (quoting Jesus) that he would rise on the THIRD day (5 times by others-witnesses and high priests) and even Paul said he rose on the third day, as he did in dying on the 15th at 3 PM and rising on the 17th in the MORNING just like Israel ate the Passover the evening of the 15th, the first born was struck down in the middle of the night just as Jesus also was struck down in the middle of the night. They left Egypt and traveled the next day but stopped to make their unleavened bread (symbolizing sinlessness) on the same day that Jesus was on the cross (still the 15th of Abib and still the first day of Unleavened Bread) that night (16th Abib) the Israelites camped for the first night. (Jesus was in the tomb for the first night). The next night, though, they began to cross the sea in the middle of the night and by morning (the 17th Abib) they were safely on the other side of the sea. Moses stretched out his hand over the waters and they closed up defeating Israel's enemy Pharaoh and his army. That same morning (17th Abib) Jesus had defeated death and our enemy Satan and his army.
Also, just an extra tidbit-and this is GOOD!
      Exodus 19:10-11,
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate them TODAY and TOMORROW. They must wash their clothes and be prepared by the THIRD DAY, for on the THIRD DAY the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people....When Moses came down from the mountain to the people, he consecrated them, and they washed their clothes. “Be prepared for the THIRD DAY,” he said to the people. “Do not draw near to a woman....On the THIRD DAY, when MORNING came, there was thunder and lightning”
DId you catch that? So Jesus said that he would rise on the "THIRD DAY" he meant it in the same way that the third day has always been understood in the Bible.
      It means:
today (what ever part is left of the day)
      tomorrow (the whole day)
Third day (the next day after the "tomorrow"-can even be in the morning of that day)
ANd so it was the THIRD DAY (today, tomorrow, third day) IN THE MORNING when the Sinai covenant arrived! And in like manner, it was the THIRD DAY in the morning when Jesus rose that the NEW covenant began!
      Exciting? I think so! ;)

Three days and three nights - Matthew 12:40. Very clear.
Then, you must know which day he was sacrificed. He was sacrificed on the day late in the afternoon preceding the high sabbath - John 19:31.
Now there were two sabbaths that fell in the timeframe of his death. The high sabbath was the passover and in three days and nights, the only other sabbath would be the weekly sabbath. So since the passover night (first day of unleavened bread) never happens on a Friday or Wednesday, the ONLY WAY to logically place the timing is by having the high sabbath on a Thursday.
He was slaughtered wednesday late in the afternoon and resurrected Saturday late in the afternoon before the sun set (before the sabbath was over).
Sunday has nothing to do with it.

And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.
    Mark:16:1
It says they waited till the sabbath past which is the annual high day(john 19 31) sabbath and bought spices. Then they prepared the spices and rested the sabbath. There were two sabbaths this week. According to leviticus 23 7 says the day after Jesus was crucified would have been a annual sabbath as well. Lord forgive me if I'm wrong but I believe there are 2 sabbaths during crucifixion week.

How do you account for that? Jesus was NOT crucified on a Friday. And the Sabbath mentioned is not the weekly Sabbath, but one of the High Days, also called the Sabbath. The actual Greek text says, "at the end of the SabbathS", not Sabbath, as misguided people translated some versions of the Bible.

Read Genesis 1: 5 and you will realise that the bible says and there was evening and there was morning. Which means everyday starts with darkness and ends with darkness. So Jesus spent morning/daylight and night/ evening of friday in the tomb. And since there is no doubt about the Sabbath day let's move to the third day. Remember that evening starts everyday so He spent evening/night of the third day in the tomb before rising at dawn/daylight/morning. Study the bible and ask God and He will make everything of his known to you.

This calculation is totally wrong. If Jesus was crucified on Thursday, why do most Christians observe 'Good Friday ?

  • @seekertruth3577
    @seekertruth3577 2 ปีที่แล้ว

*Three Days and Three Nights [Section 1 of 5]*
There is controversy among some Christians about the true day of Jesus’ death. Most people believe that Jesus died on a Friday, but some Crucifixion theoreticians believe that Jesus actually died on a Wednesday and others believe that He dies on Thursday.
Jesus’ statement in Matthew 12:39-41 positively affirms that the Old Testament story of Jonah did actually take place as the Scriptures record it. But more than that, the event constituted a sign of Christ's own death, burial, and resurrection. As a matter of fact, this was the only sign given to that generation [v39].
Crucifixion theorists have made a tremendous issue out of the phrase "three days and three nights." They insist that Jesus used the expression because He was to be in the grave
*exactly seventy-two hours,* NOT A SECOND MORE OR SECOND LESS. This conviction has led them to conclude that Christ was crucified on Wednesday afternoon and was resurrected at the same hour late Sabbath afternoon. In this way, they account for the full seventy-two hours that they believe Christ spent in the tomb.
On seventeen separate occasions, Jesus or His friends spoke of the timetable involving His death and resurrection.
*[1]* - *Ten times* it was specified that the resurrection would take place *ON* the *"third day"* [Mat.16:21; 17:23; 20:19; Mark 9:31; 10:34, Luke 9:22; 13:32; 18:33; 24:7,46].
*[2]* On *five occasions* they said, *"IN three days"* Matthew 26:61; 27:40, Mark 15:29, John 2:19-20].
*[3]* - *Twice* they used the phrase, *"AFTER three days"* [Matthew 27:63, Mark 8:31].
*[4]* And *Once only* Jesus spoke of His death as *"three days and three nights"* [Matthew 12:40].
Without question, *all* of these various expressions are used to describe the *very same event.* There seems to be no dispute regarding this point. "The third day," "in three days," "after three days," and "three days and three nights" are *equivalent terms* used in the scripture in reference to the resurrection of Jesus.
*CAN ALL OF THESE EXPRESSIONS BE TAKEN IN A STRICTLY LITERAL SENSE AND STILL HARMONIZE WITH EACH OTHER?* Absolutely NOT! For example, *"after* three days" would certainly have to be interpreted as *longer* than seventy-two hours. *"In* three days" could mean anytime *less* than seventy-two hours, and "three days *and* three nights" could only mean *exactly* seventy-two hours to the second. And *"the third day"* presents even *greater problems as we shall notice in a moment.*
*Many people have placed their own philosophical interpretations upon the meaning of God's Word. We must allow the scripture to explain itself,* and especially, we must *let Christ provide definitions* for the words which He spoke. It would be a mammoth mistake to seize upon any one of the expressions used and force its strict compliance with our interpretation without reference to the other sixteen texts on the subject.
The only way we can harmonize all of these apparently so-called contradictory statements of Jesus is to understand them in the light of the inclusive reckoning of time. This was the method used throughout the scripture in computing time, and we must apply the same method now, unless we want mass confusion. *The UNREASONABLE INSISTENCE UPON THE USE OF TWENTIETH CENTURY ENGLISH IDIOMS OF SPEECH TO INTERPRET FIRST CENTURY GREEK OR HEBREW HAS LED TO SOME EXTREME VIEWS INDEED.* Jesus and His close friends spoke and wrote in harmony with the common literacy usage of the day, and that usage recognized inclusive reckoning of time. In simple language, this means that *any part* of a day was counted as a *whole day.*
*Let us read the authoritative statement of the Jewish Encyclopedia on this subject:*
*"A short time in the morning of the seventh day is counted as the seventh day;* circumcision takes place on the eighth day, *even though, of the first day only a few minutes after the birth of the child, these being counted as one day."* Jewish Encyclopedia, Volume 4, page 475.
How clearly this defines the Hebrew method of computing time. *ANY SMALL PART OF A DAY WAS RECKONED AS THE ENTIRE TWENTY-FOUR-HOUR PERIOD.* It is the Hebrew form of speech and language. Scores of contradictions would appear in both the Old and New Testaments if this principle were ignored. *We must compare Scripture with Scripture* and use the idiom of the language in which the scripture was written. Inclusive reckoning was taken for granted by all writers of the Scripture.
*Let us examine a few examples of this usage in the scripture that will clarify the problem before us:*
*Noah:* In Genesis 7:4, God said to Noah, "For *yet seven days,* and I will cause it to rain upon the earth." But in verse 10 we read, "And it came to pass *after* seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth." The marginal reading expresses it as *"on* the seventh day." Pity the poor chronologer who tries to figure that one out! When did the flood come? *In* seven days? *On* the seventh day? Or *after* seven days? *The answer is simple when the inclusive reckoning is applied.* THE DAY ON WHICH GOD SPOKE TO NOAH COUNTED AS THE FIRST DAY, AND THE DAY ON WHICH IT STARTED RAINING WAS THE SEVENTH DAY. *Even if God spoke just ten minutes before the end of that first day, it was still counted as one of the seven. And if it started raining at noon on the last day, it was also counted one of the seven.*
*Circumcision:* The same principle is revealed in the circumcision of babies. Genesis 17:12 specifies "he that *is* eight days old." But Luke 1:59 reads *"on* the eighth day." Luke 2:21 uses still another expression: "When eight days were *accomplished."*
*Joseph:* Further proof for inclusive reckoning is seen in Joseph's dealing with his brethren. Genesis 42:17-19 says "He put them all together into ward *three days.* And Joseph said unto them
*the* third day, This do, and live; ... go ye. ..."
*Taxes:* Consider also the tax issue between King Rehoboam and the people. 2 Chronicles 10:5,12 says, "Come again unto me *after three days.* ... So ... all the people came to Rehoboam *on* the third day."
It is as clear as crystal. *The UNREASONABLE INSISTENCE UPON THE USE OF TWENTIETH-CENTURY ENGLISH IDIOMS OF SPEECH TO INTERPRET FIRST CENTURY GREEK OR HEBREW HAS LED TO SOME EXTREME VIEWS INDEED.* Jesus and His close friends spoke and wrote in harmony with the common literacy usage of the day, and that usage recognized inclusive reckoning of time. In simple language, this means that *any part* of a day was counted as a *whole day.*
Scores of contradictions would appear in both the Old and New Testaments if this principle were ignored. We must compare Scripture with Scripture and use the idiom of the language in which the Bible was written and not our own thoughts and ideas.
Also, read *Three Days and Three Nights [Section 2 of 5]*

*Three Days and Three Nights [Section 2 of 5]*
      *Christ's definition of Time Defined*
Now we are ready to apply this very cleary established rule to the time Jesus was in the tomb. At least a part of three days had to be included in the period He was actually dead. The most frequent expression Jesus used in describing the resurrection was the *"third day."* He defended His repetition of the term on the basis of the Scriptures. "And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus is behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead *the* third day" [Luke 24:46].
The two disciples on the road to Emmaus employed the same expression when they spoke of the terrible events surrounding the crucifixion. Unconscious of the fact that they were talking to Jesus, who had been resurrected earlier that same day, one of them said, *"To day is the third day* since these things were done" [Luke 24:21].
We can now clearly see that those people understood how to count the days and to determine which was the third one. *They knew because it was a common idiom of their language.* But Jesus did not leave any question in the matter. It almost seems that Jesus anticipated the perplexity of later Christians who might not know about the inclusive reckoning. Therefore, He gave such a plain, conclusive explanation of how to locate the third day that no one would ever need to doubt again. "Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures *to day and to morrow, and the third day* I shall be perfected. Nevertheless I must walk *to day, and to morrow, and the day following"* Luke 13:32, 33.
How simple Jesus made it! Even a minor can figure when the third day comes. The third day will always be the day after "to morrow" from any certain event. *The first day is counted in its entirety [no matter when it begins during that day], the whole of the second day, and the third day in its entirety [no matter when it ends during that day].*
Now we can understand the conversation Jesus had with the Jewish leaders and why they interpreted it as they did. He said, "Destroy this temple, and *[in]* three days I will raise it up" [John 2:19-21]. Later, after the crucifixion, the chief priest said to Pilate, "Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, *[After]* three days I will rise again. Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure *[until]* the third day, lest his disciples come by night and steal him away" Matthew 27:63-64].
Now the picture snaps even much clearer into focus. Speaking prophetically of His own death and resurrection, He said, *"To day [crucifixion]* and *to morrow [in tomb],* and *the third day [resurrection]* I shall be perfected" [Luke 13:32]. There are all three days in their sequence. *Even though Christ died in the late afternoon, THE ENTIRE DAY WOULD BE COUNTED AS THE FIRST DAY.* - *The second day would span [the Sabbath] when He slept in the tomb. *Even though He was resurrected in the early hours on the third day, the inclusive reckoning would make it one of the three days. Thus, Friday, Saturday and Sunday = Three Days.*
      *The Resurrection on Sunday:*
Now the time has come to pinpoint the actual days of the week when these events took place. Again, we are amazed at the perfect harmony of the Scriptures on the subject. There can be no question but that Jesus arose on Sunday, the first day of the week. Mark emphatically states, "Now when Jesus was risen early the *first day* of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene" [Mark 16:9]. Sunday is the first day of the week, and that is when He was resurrected. Words could be no plainer. Even the original Greek construction of the text will allow no other meaning. He did NOT rise from the grave on Saturday, as some contend. Neither was He crucified on Wednesday. There is not a scintilla of scripture evidence that He died on the fourth day of the week.
According to the inspired record, Christ was put to death on the "preparation day," and the preparation day was *NOT* Wednesday or Thursday as many would like to believe. In all of biblical history, *preparation day has always been Friday.* Mark 15:42-43, "And now when the even was come, because it was the *preparation,* that is, *the day before the sabbath,* Joseph of Arimathaea ... went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus."
The day following the crucifixion was not only the weekly Seventh-day Sabbath, "that sabbath day was an *high day"* John 19:31. This means that a *yearly Sabbath* in that particular year happened to fall on the weekly Sabbath. In this case it was the *Feast of Unleavened Bread* [Matthew 26:17; Mark 14:1], which was called the *Passover* [Luke 22:1]. Luke clearly identified that preparation day as the one immediately preceding the weekly Sabbath [Luke 23:54 - 24:1].
Surely there can be no doubt as to the time elements involved. Christ died on the preparation day, or the day before the weekly Sabbath. The next day is designated as *"the sabbath day according to the commandment"* [Luke 23:56]. Since the commandment says, *"The seventh day is the sabbath"* [Exodus 20:10], we know that this had to be the day we call Saturday.
Jesus was raised from the tomb anywhere between sunset on the Sabbath day [roughly 6PM Saturday] to sunrise the first day of the week [6AM Sunday], which encompassed the first 12-hour period of the third day.

      *Spices and Ointments:*
Furthermore, after describing the events of the preparation day in Luke 23:54-55, the next verse says:, "And they returned, and *prepared spices and ointments;* and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment." Luke 23:56
They prepared spices on the preparation day, then rested on the sabbath day. *Now notice what the very next verse says:*
"Now upon the *first day of the week,* very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, *bringing the spices which they had prepared"* Luke 24:1.
Please take note that after preparing the spices on the afternoon of the crucifixion [Friday], and resting over the Sabbath [Saturday], they came to the tomb with the spices on the *first day* of the week [Sunday] to do the work of anointing. This was their first opportunity after the Sabbath to carry out the preparations made on Friday afternoon. This is when they discovered that Christ was risen.
If the crucifixion took place on Wednesday, how can we explain why the women waited until Sunday to come to the sepulchre? *WHY DIDN'T THEY COME THURSDAY OR FRIDAY TO ANOINT HIS BODY? DID THEY NOT UNDERSTAND THAT AFTER FOUR DAYS HIS BODY WOULD BE DECOMPOSING AND THEIR WORK OF LOVE WOULD BE IN VAIN?* - *The answers to these questions constitute the strongest case against a Wednesday crucifixion.*
*In view of the resounding weight of biblical evidence to the contrary, how can some still cling to the Wednesday crucifixion idea? The entire scheme is based upon the twisted interpretation of a single scripture text.* - *The "three days and three nights" phrase is forced into artificial conformity with *current English forms of speech, instead of the common usage of the people living at that time.*
      *Matthew 28:1:*
Those who believe that Jesus died on Wednesday and rose on Saturday base much of their evidence on Matthew 28:1, "In the *end of the sabbath,* as it began to *dawn* toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre." Figuring that the first day of the week *"dawns"* at sundown Saturday night as the Sabbath ends, these people assume that the women discovered the empty tomb in the twilight moments of the Sabbath, just before sundown. *They count backwards exactly seventy-two hours and arrive at Wednesday evening just before sundown for the crucifixion.*
*Is this a valid conclusion?* Or is there evidence that the women could not have visited the empty tomb on Saturday evening? There is indeed positive biblical proof that they did not. We find that evidence in Mark's account of the visit to the sepulchre in Mark 16:1-3.
"And when *the sabbath was past,* Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and *anoint him.* And very *early in the morning the first day of the week,* they came unto the sepulchre at the *rising of the sun.* And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?"
*There is no question about this being an early Sunday morning visit. It is at sunrise. The very same women are named as in Matthew's account.* Can we correctly assume that these same women had been to the tomb the night before and found Jesus risen? Impossible. Why? Because of the question they asked as they approached the garden on Sunday morning, *"Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?"* [Mark 16:3]. If they had been there Saturday just before sundown and found the tomb empty, they would have known that the stone was already rolled away from the door. This is *absolute proof* that they had not been to an empty tomb the day before. It also proves that Matthew's *"dawn"* refers to the dawning *represented by the sunrise and not sunset.* There is no contradiction between the two accounts.
Now, some may ask "Why does Matthew 28:1 say the women came to the tomb at the *end of the sabbath?"* This is a legitimate question. Well, the answer is because the Greek word for "Sabbath" can also mean "week." This Greek word, sabbaton is word #4521, and means "the sabbath" as well as "a week." As a matter of fact, this same Greek word is translated as both "sabbath" and "week" in Matthew 28:1.
Matthew 28:1, "In the end of the sabbath, [Greek word #4521] as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, [Greek word #4521] came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre."
In other words, the proper translation should read, *"In the end of the [week,] as it began to dawn toward the first day of the [week]."* This same Greek word that's translated as "Sabbath" is also translated as "week" in these passages; Mark 16:2,9; Luke 18:2; 24:1, John 20:1,19; Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 16:2, so *it is not difficult to see that the correct translation* in Matthew 28:1 is "week" and not "sabbath."
This makes sense because, as was shown above, these women could not possibly have gone to the tomb on both the Sabbath *and* Sunday, *because they would have known that the stone was already rolled away from the door.* Besides, if they did go to the tomb on the Sabbath, this would directly contradict this passage in scripture, which says the women [rested] on the Sabbath:
"And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and *rested the sabbath day* according to the commandment." Luke 23:56.

*Three Days and Three Nights [Section 4 of 5]*
      *Seventy-Two Hours Not Biblical*
Those who insist that Christ was in the grave a full seventy-two hours contend that the three days and three nights must be taken in the fullest literal sense. But such a contention is absolutely contrary to the testimony of the Scriptures. An example of the way the scripture uses the phrase is found in Esther 4:16. Do not overlook the fact that they were too fast "three days *and* three nights." Yet Esther 5:1 tells us, "it came to pass *on* the third day" that they ended their fast. HERE IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF HOW THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS TERMINATE *ON* THE THIRD DAY.
We have already learned how Jesus explained the third day. He said "to day, and to morrow, and the third day" [Luke 13:32]. Please think about it for a moment. When Jesus walked with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus on Sunday afternoon, after the resurrection, Cleopas said, *"To day is the third day* since these things were done" [Luke 24:21].
*No one denies that this was on Sunday.* But listen, if Jesus had been crucified on Wednesday afternoon, Cleopas would have had to say "To day is the *fifth day* since these things were done." Count it for yourself, *1.* Wednesday, *2.* Thursday, *3.* Friday, *4.* Saturday, and most of *5.* Sunday. *Later the same day - the first day of the week - Jesus made this statement:* "Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead *the third day."* Luke 24:46. *Who was right? Jesus was right and Cleopas was right.* - *THOSE WHO CLAIM THE WEDNESDAY CRUCIFIXION ARE WRONG.* Christ died on Friday, the preparation for the Sabbath - that was the first day. He rested in the tomb on the Sabbath according to the commandment - that was the second day. He arose on the first day of the week which was Sunday - that was the third day. How simple to understand.
The proponents of a Wednesday crucifixion are so wrong and use a unscrupulous methods to explain away the words of Cleopas on the road to Emmaus. They contend that he was not counting the three days from the time of Christ's death, but rather from the sealing of the tomb by the Roman authorities the day after he was crucified. For this theoretical conjecture there is not a fragment of evidence in the scripture. Cleopas did speak about the trial of Jesus and certain events leading up to His crucifixion. By taking a bit of exegetical license one could possibly reach back to those events from which to reckon the third day. But by no stretch of the imagination could any point beyond the death of Christ be used in computing the three days.
In every related text, the third day is counted from the time of His death on the cross.
Matthew said He would "be killed, and be raised again *the third day"* [Matthew 16:21]. Mark wrote that He must "be killed, and *after three days* rise again" Mark 8:31. Luke's account reports that He must "be slain, and be raised *the third day"* Luke 9:22.
Repeatedly, the Scriptures emphasize the death of Jesus as the *starting point of the three days.* *To begin counting a full day after the crucifixion is not only unbiblical but grossly imaginary.* The sealing of the tomb is never once referred to in connection with the period of time He was dead.
*The expression "three days and three nights" does not indicate a precise computation of hours, minutes, seconds.* We read that "forty days and forty nights" were spent by Christ in the wilderness of temptation. However, the writers of two of the gospels state it simply as a period of "forty days," showing that inspiration was not pinpointing the hours or minutes.
*The Four Days of Cornelius* Now let us consider a final clear-cut example of *inclusive reckoning* that should lay this point to rest with every open-minded reader. It is taken from the New Testament and reveals graphically how days were numbered in the days of Jesus. The following is an account of a 72-hour period, and it calls 72 exact hours "four days," not three days.
*Start at Ninth Hour:* In Acts 10:3, Cornelius "saw in a vision evidently about *the ninth hour* of the day an angel of God coming in to him." Follow the story carefully now. He was instructed in the vision to send men to Joppa and call for Peter. "And when the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and ... he sent them to Joppa" [vs 7-8].
*One Day:* - *"On the morrow,* as they went on their journey, and drew night unto the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray" [v9]. While praying he had a vision, and the men knocked at his door when his vision ended [v17]. *Please notice that this is ONE DAY after Cornelius received his angel visitor.* Peter invited the men to come in and lodged them [v23].
*Two Days:* "... And *on the morrow* Peter went away with them, and certain brethren from Joppa accompanied him" [v23]. *Take note that this is now THE SECOND DAY since the men were dispatched by Cornelius.*
*Three Days:* "And *the morrow after* they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius waited for them" [v24]. *This is THE THIRD DAY since Cornelius had his angelic vision.* - *But don't miss this point* - a *FEW MINUTES LATER,* in talking to Peter, Cornelius said, *"Four days ago* I was fasting until *this hour;* and at *the ninth hour* I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing" [v30].
*Three Days = Four days?* Now we get the picture in mind. It had been *exactly three days,* to the *very hour* [the ninth hour]. YET CORNELIUS SAID, *"Four days ago."*
*How could he say it was four days when it was only three days?*
*THIS IS BECAUSE HE USED INCLUSIVE RECKONING, WHICH MEANT THAT PARTS OF FOUR DAYS WERE INVOLVED.*
In Jewish time, the ninth hour is 3PM. Now, scripture does not say which day Cornelius saw his vision, but it does not matter. Let us hypothetically start on Wednesday. Cornelius saw his vision at 3PM Wednesday [Acts 10:3]. Thursday, the men knocked on Peter's door [v17]. Friday, Peter went with the men [v24]. And Saturday at 3 PM, Cornelius said he received his vision "four days ago." Even though it was 72 hours ago [three days ago], Cornelius said it was *four* days ago. Count in for your self. *1.* Wednesday, *2.* Thursday, *3.* Friday and *4.* Saturday = *Four Days.*
*This is the scriptural way of keeping track of days, which goes contrary to the MODERN WAY of keeping track of time.*
Now, If Jesus was put in the tomb on Wednesday, and resurrected on Saturday, scripture would have said it was four days. But it describes Jesus' resurrection as only three days. This is the way scripture describes the length of time Jesus was in the tomb. Even though it was only a part of those three days [part of the 6th day, the entire 7th day, part of the 1st day], it is counted as three full days. *1.* Friday, *2.* Sabbath, and *3.* Sunday = *Three Days.*
The interval from Friday afternoon to Sunday morning is three days, by inclusive reckoning. Since it is clear that this mode of counting was the common practice in Bible times, and widespread in many countries, it is useless to try to understand this period as three full 24-hour days, according to the modern Western habit of counting. To do so violates both historical usage and Biblical statement, and creates a difficulty that would not exist if the ordinary usage of common speech and of examples in the Bible be taken into account.
The only way to harmonize Matthew 12:40 with other scripture as seen in the above table is to understand it in the light of inclusive reckoning of time. Inclusive reckoning was taken for granted by all the writers of the Scriptures and they wrote in harmony with the common literacy used those days, and that usage recognized inclusive reckoning of time. This means that any part of a day was counted as a whole day.
*The Jewish Encyclopaedia states,* “A short time in the morning of the seventh day is counted as the seventh day; circumcision takes place on the eighth day, even though, of the first day only a few minutes after the birth of the child, these being counted as one day.” *Vol. 4, p. 475.*

*Three Days and Three Nights [Section 5 of 5]*
*Below are Bible Commentaries from various expert theologians and as you would expect had no trouble in understanding inclusive reckoning of time.*
*Albert Barnes’ Notes on the Bible. Albert Barnes (1798-1870) Three days and three nights* - It will be seen in the account of the resurrection of Christ that he was in the grave but two nights and a part of three days. See Mat_18:6. *This computation is, however, strictly in accordance with the Jewish mode of reckoning.* If it had “not” been, the Jews would have understood it, and would have charged our Saviour as being a false prophet, for it was well known to them that he had spoken this prophecy, Mat_27:63. Such a charge, however, was never made; and it is plain, therefore, that what was “meant” by the prediction was accomplished. It was a maxim, also, *among the Jews, in computing time, that a part of a day was to be received as the whole. Many instances of this kind occur in both sacred and profane history.* See 2Ch_10:5, 2Ch_10:12; Gen_42:17-18. Compare Est_4:16 with Est_5:1. In the heart of the earth - The Jews used the word “heart” to denote the “interior” of a thing, or to speak of being in a thing. It means, here, to be in the grave or sepulchre.
*Adam Clarke’s Commentary on the Bible. Adam Clarke, LL.D., F.S.A., (1715-1832) Three days and three nights* - Our Lord rose from the grave on the day but one after his crucifixion: so that, *in the computation in this verse, the part of the day on which he was crucified, and the part of that on which he rose again, are severally estimated as an entire day; and this, no doubt, exactly corresponded to the time in which Jonah was in the belly of the fish.* Our Lord says, As Jonah was, so shall the Son of man be, etc. Evening and morning, or night and day, is the Hebrew phrase for a natural day, which the Greeks termed νυχθημερον, nuchthemeron. *The very same quantity of time which is here termed three days and three nights, and which, in reality, was only one whole day, a part of two others, and two whole nights, is termed three days and three nights, in the book of Esther:* Go; neither eat nor drink Three Days, Night or Day, and so I will go in unto the king: Est_4:16. Afterwards it follows, Est_5:1. On the Third Day, Esther stood in the inner court of the king’s house. *Many examples might be produced, from both the sacred and profane writers, in vindication of the propriety of the expression in the text.* For farther satisfaction, the reader, if he please, may consult Whitby and Wakefield, and take the following from Lightfoot.“ *I.* The Jewish writers extend that memorable station of the unmoving sun, at Joshua’s prayer, to six and thirty hours; for so Kimchi upon that place: ‘According to more exact interpretation, the sun and moon stood still for six and thirty hours: for when the fight was on the eve of the Sabbath, Joshua feared lest the Israelites might break the Sabbath; therefore he spread abroad his hands, *that the sun might stand still on the sixth day, according to the measure of the day of the Sabbath, and the moon according to the measure of the night of the Sabbath, and of the going out of the Sabbath, which amounts to six and thirty hours.’“* - *II.* If you number the hours that pass from our Savior’s giving up the ghost upon the cross to his resurrection, you shall find almost the same number of hours; and yet that *space is called by him three days and three nights, whereas two nights only came between, and one complete day. Nevertheless, while he speaks these words, he is not without the consent both of the Jewish schools and their computation.* Weigh well that which is disputed in the tract Scabbath, concerning the separation of a woman for three days; where many things are discussed by the Gemarists, concerning the computation of this space of three days. Among other things these words occur: R. Ismael saith, Sometimes it contains four אונות onoth, sometimes five, sometimes six. But how much is the space of an אונה onah? R. Jochanan saith, Either a day or a night. And so also the Jerusalem Talmud: ‘R. Akiba fixed a Day for an onah, and a Night for an onah.’ But the tradition is, that R. Eliazar ben Azariah said, A day and a night make an onah: and *a Part of an onah is as the Whole.* And a little after, R. Ismael *computed a part of the onah for the whole.” Thus, then, three days and three nights, according to this Jewish method of reckoning, included any part of the first day; the whole of the following night; the next day and its night; and any part of the succeeding or third day.*
*John Gill’s Exposition of the Entire Bible. Dr. John Gill (1690-1771)* So shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. That Christ means himself by the “son of man”, there is no reason to doubt; and his being laid in a tomb, dug out of a rock, is sufficient to answer this phrase, “the heart of the earth”, in distinction from the surface of it; but some difficulty arises about the time of his continuing there, and the prediction here made agreeable to the type: *for it was on the sixth day of the week, we commonly call “Friday”,* towards the close, on the day of the preparation for the sabbath, and when the sabbath drew on, that the body of Christ was laid in the sepulchre; *where it lay all the next day, which was the sabbath of the Jews, and what we commonly call “Saturday”; and early on the first of the week, usually called “Sunday”, or the Lord’s day, he rose from the dead; so that he was but one whole day, and part of two, in the grave.* To solve this difficulty, and set the matter in a clear light, let it be observed, that the three days and three nights, mean three natural days, consisting of day and night, or twenty four hours, and are what the Greeks call νυχθημερα, “night days”; *but the Jews have no other way of expressing them, but as here; and with them it is a well known rule, and used on all occasions, as in the computation of their feasts and times of mourning, in the observance of the passover, circumcision, and divers purifications, that מקצתהיום ככולו, “a part of a day is as the whole” (n): and so, whatever was done before sun setting, or after, if but an hour, or ever so small a time, before or after it, it was reckoned as the whole preceding, or following day; and whether this was in the night part, or day part of the night day, or natural day, it mattered not, it was accounted as the whole night day: by this rule, the case here is easily adjusted; Christ was laid in the grave towards the close of the sixth day, a little before sun setting, and this being a part of the night day preceding, is reckoned as the whole; he continued there the whole night day following, being the seventh day; and rose again early on the first day, which being after sun setting, though it might be even before sun rising, yet being a part of the night day following, is to be esteemed as the whole;* and thus the son of man was to be, and was three days and three nights in the grave; *and which was very easy to be understood by the Jews; and it is a question whether Jonas was longer in the belly of the fish.*
*A Commentary on the Old and New Testaments by Robert Jamieson, A. R. Fausset and David Brown* so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth - This was the second public announcement of His resurrection three days after His death. (For the first, see Joh_2:19). Jonah’s case was analogous to this, as being a signal judgment of God; reversed in three days; and followed by a glorious mission to the Gentiles. The expression “in the heart of the earth,” suggested by the expression of Jonah with respect to the sea (Jon_2:3, in the Septuagint), means simply the grave, but this considered as the most emphatic expression of real and total entombment. The period during which He was to lie in the grave is here expressed in round numbers, according to the Jewish way of speaking, *which was to regard any part of a day, however small, included within a period of days, as a full day. (See 1Sa_**30:12**, 1Sa_**30:13**; Est_**4:16**; Est_5:1; Mat_27:63, Mat_27:64, etc.).*
*John Wesley’s Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible Three days and three nights* - *It was customary with the eastern nations to reckon any part of a natural day of twenty - four hours, for the whole day.* Accordingly they used to say a thing was done after three or seven days, if it was done on the third or seventh day, from that which was last mentioned. Instances of this may be seen, 1Ki_20:29; and in many other places. And as the Hebrews had no word to express a natural day, they used night and day, or day and night for it. So that to say a thing happened after three days and three nights, *was with them the very same, as to say, it happened after three days, or on the third day. See Est_**4:16**; Est_5:1; Gen_7:4, Gen_**7:12**; Exo_**24:18**; Exo_**34:28**. Jon_2:1.*

*Three Days and Three Nights [Section 5 of 5 continues]*
*Below are Bible Commentaries from various expert theologians and as you would expect had no trouble in understanding inclusive reckoning of time.*
*The People’s New Testament (1891) by B. W. Johnson* So shall the Son of man be three days and three nights. Jesus says (Mat_16:21) that he will “be raised again the third day.” Hence, in Jewish usage the third day must mean the same as three days and three nights. *It was and is customary with the Orientals to make any part of the day stand for the whole twenty-four hours.* Compare Mat_16:21, Mar_8:31, 2Ch_10:5 and 2Ch_10:12, Est_4:16, Gen_7:4, Gen_7:12, Exo_24:18, Exo_34:28. A traveler in the East writes: “At length the tenth morning arrived-the tenth morning because, though we performed nominally ten days quarantine, *yet it was, really, only eight days.* We landed at nine o’clock in the evening of the first day, and were liberated at six o’clock in the morning of the tenth day, *but it was held to be ten days according to the custom of the East.” Christ was buried Friday evening, lay in the grave Saturday, and rose Sunday, parts of three days, rose “on the third day,” and was in the grave the space of time meant in eastern usage by three days and three nights. John Lightfoot, (March 29, 1602 - December 6, 1675)*
*A Commentary of the New Testament from the Talmud and Hebraica.* [The Son of man shall be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.] *I.* The Jewish writers extend that memorable station of the unmoving sun at Joshua’s prayer to six-and-thirty hours; for so Kimchi upon that place: “According to more exact interpretation, the sun and moon stood still for six-and-thirty hours: for when the fight was on the eve of the sabbath, Joshua feared lest the Israelites might break the sabbath: therefore he spread abroad his hands, that the sun might stand still on the sixth day, according to the measure of the day of the sabbath, and the moon, according to the measure of the night of the sabbath, and of the going-out of the sabbath; which amounts to six-and-thirty hours.” *II.* If you number the hours that passed from our Saviour’s giving up the ghost upon the cross to his resurrection, you shall find almost the same number of hours; *and yet that space is called by him “three days and three nights,” when as two nights only came between, and only one complete day. Nevertheless, while he speaks these words, he is not without the consent both of the Jewish schools, and their computation.* Weigh well that which is disputed in the tract Schabbath; concerning the uncleanness of a woman for three days; where many things are discussed by the Gemarists concerning the computation of this space of three days. Among other things these words occur; “R. Ismael saith, Sometimes it contains four Onoth sometimes five, sometimes six. But how much is the space of an Onah? R. Jochanan saith either a day or a night.” And so also the Jerusalem Talmud; “R. Akiba fixed a day for an Onah; and a night for an Onah; but the tradition is, that R. Eliezar Ben Azariah said, A day and a night make an Onah, *and a part of an Onah is as the whole.”* And a little after, R. Ismael *computeth a part of the Onah for the whole.* It is not easy to translate the word Onah into good Latin: for to some it is the same with the half of a natural day; *to some it is all one with a whole natural day.* According to the first sense we may observe, from the words of R. Ismael, that sometimes four Onoth; *or halves of a natural day, may be accounted for three days: and that they also are so numbered that one part or the other of those halves may be accounted for a whole.* Compare the latter sense with the words of our Saviour, which are now before us: *“A day and a night (saith the tradition) make an Onah; and a part of an Onah is as the whole.” Therefore Christ may truly be said to have been in his grave three Onoth; or three natural days (when yet the greatest part of the first day was wanting, and the night altogether, and the greatest part by far of the third day also), the consent of the schools and dialect of the nation agreeing thereunto. For, “the least part of the Onah concluded the whole.” So that according to this idiom, that diminutive part of the third day upon which Christ arose may be computed for the whole day, and the night following it.* In the following, Philo is specifically referring to our debate, i.e. whether or not we should count or include or exclude the day of conjunction as the first day of the new month! ON DREAMS,11. [257] page 559 of the FH Colson translation of Philo, Philo states that *“the word “from” has two meanings, one where the thing from which what we are describing starts is included, the other where it is excluded.* For when we say that there are 12 hours from early morning to evening, or 30 days from new moon to the end of the month, *we take into our reckoning the first hours in the former case and the new moon itself in the later.” It appears that Philo uses inclusive reckoning when counting 30 days from new moon to the end of a 30 day month.* We see that he is indirectly calling the conjunction day, the new moon, and the first day of the 30 day month. Notice, the thing he is describing is 12 hours and 30 days! In order to have 30 days in a lunar month, which is from one conjunction to the next, the day of the first conjunction [which he calls new moon] must be included in the count, and counted as one whole day of the 30 day month. And Philo calls “it” [the day of conjunction] the new moon! *He says that one of the meanings of the word “from” is where thing from which what we are describing starts is included”, which is thirty days of a new rebuilding moon cycle beginning at conjunction. How do you understand Philo, who lived during the time of the New Testament?*
The only way we can harmonize all of these apparently so-called contradictory statements of Jesus is to understand them in the light of inclusive reckoning of time.

Jesus was crucified and buried on Thursday, on Friday was the ceremonial religious Sabbath (rest) which means a rest kept under the religious obligation of a feast, that’s where the confusion comes from, the Friday was a Sabbath. It was not a literal Sabbath (the seventh day of the week) but a day for keeping a ceremonial rest related to one of the feasts. After that religious rest comes the weekly Sabbath, which again was a day of rest, and then the Sunday morning which was the first day of the Hebrew week. That’s why the women couldn’t come to the tomb prior to Sunday morning, because they had to keep rest for those two days. So, according to the Hebrew way of counting day and night (see Gen. 1:5) we have the following: And it became Thursday evening and Friday morning (day one and night one). Then became Friday evening and Saturday morning ( day two and night two) and then it became Saturday evening and Sunday morning ( day three and night three). Jesus rose on Sunday morning after three jewish days and nights.

The Jewish understanding of time and days is slightly different to ours. So if you factor in what this video explains we have this: Thursday night, Friday Night, Saturday night = 3 nights; Friday, Saturday and Sunday = 3 days. I think it is fairly easy to understand ?

    Dear sir,
Truth seeking mission Jamaica would like to commend you for your inclusion of Thursday in your understanding of the three days of Christ's death and resurrection! However, we would like to suggest that the counting of the three days should commence at the very moment of Christ's death at 3p.m. sharp. Truly, we agree with you that at the crack of dawn Sunday morning, Christ resurrected, however we cannot agree with the beginning of the three day count to start with his death on a Friday as you say.

In ancient times, people across the world mourned the dead for 3 days before burial. It's easy to understand why not any longer, but it was also believed that the spirit of the departed hovered over the corpse for that period before passing on.
Jesus was resurrected in spirit only. His body was taken by Joseph of Aramia to a secret place. The first person that recalled the teachings in its compilation was Mary Magdelon, on the 3rd day after vising the empty tomb. So she was the most influential person in resurrecting his spirit through recollection. Every time the disciples gathered, their personal recollections brought Jesus closer n closer!

No offence but Jesus actually died on what our calendar would call Wednesday afternoon. Okay Wed. night and Thursday would be day 1 (which was the second of two High Sabbaths that were observed the Passover week in addition to the regular Sabbath that took place on Saturday). Thursday night and Friday morning would be day 2. Friday night and Saturday make up day 3. Then Jesus arose early Sunday morning. A deep study of Exodus and Numbers will prove that Jesus was in the grave 3 days and 3 nights just as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish 3 days and 3 nights. Thanks and God bless.

He was ENTOMBED Wednesday just before 6:00 PM (Sundown) He rose Saturday ( on the weekly Sabbath . 7th day ) Just before 6:00 PM (Sun Down ). Now,we KNOW why the Sabbath day was such a HOLY DAY to God. God set that 7th day "aside" from the very beginning. God the FATHER stopped his work AFTER the 6th day. Jesus FINISHED the work of His FATHER on the 7th day. Jesus PAID for mankinds sin,ALL BY HIMSELF on that HOLY Day. While that entire Nation was doing NOTHING. ( or were supposed to be doing nothing ) Sabbath keeping has always been EXCLUSIVELY a Jewish.Holy Day . NOW we know why.

In order for Christ to have told the truth when he said he would be in the grave for 3 full days and 3 full night's collar he would have had to bed put on the cross on Wednesday. Still doesn't make sense to me😢. The bible tells that he died on Friday in the afternoon before sunset and rose up in the morning on Sunday. Now Friday afternoon before sunset, that's few hours before saturday(Friday sunset), then the whole Saturday (that's a full day) till sunset (where Sunday begins), then rose up on Sunday morning (not the whole Sunday). So the only whole day and night he rested is Saturday... Friday and Sunday were not even half days. So in the end, it's like he died for 1,5 days😢

    • @danielstelmakh2019
      @danielstelmakh2019 ปีที่แล้ว

Well it doesn't say He died on Friday afternoon. It says he died on "day of preparation." This doesn't necessarily imply Friday this could also correspond to Feasts days aswell. Jesus said that he is to be crucified on the passover which is an annual feast day. However, when we read in leviticus 23 this feast (passover) isn't required to rest. However, the day that directly follows passover is the first day of unleavened bread which requires no customary work to be done, essentially a sabbaths rest. One thing to note is that these feast days are high days (holy days). You are right in the times not adding up and its good that you noticed that because Jesus says He will be in the belly of the earth for 3 days and 3 nights, another way of thinking this in terms of jewish time is 3 evenings and 3 mornings. One final detail to consider is that when mary goes to the tomb and finds it empty does not imply he rose sunday morning. We are looking at her perspective. The thing is Jesus could have rose the night or day before because the Angel tells mary that he has already risen, which in the past tense. The problem is we assume that died on friday because of the "day of preparation" and rose sunday because the first day of the week began to dawn mary saw the tomb empty. When I try reading all the gospel accounts in that context I find the second day missing. A more elaborate understanding is that passover happened on Wednesday and jesus dies in the afternoon. That same day is the day of preparation for first day of unlevened bread (Thursday). Friday is another day of preparation for the weekly Sabbath and then we read they rested on the sabbath according to the commandment. Starting from his death in the afternoon he had to be buried before sunset and that is when the time starts. So from Wednesday evening to Thursday evening is Day 1 (First day of unleavened bread), Thursday evening to friday evening is Day 2 (Prep day), Friday evening to saturday evening is Day 3 (Sabbath). However, Since he was buried before wednesday evening he must have rose before saturday evening which would be dusk of the first day of the week. Most likely none of the diciples did not go to the tomb on the sabbath and it was getting dark so Mary went the following morning (Sunday) after the sabbath and finds the tomb empty. I hope this explanation helps. In the video the guy makes an error right away and dismisses the thursday evening as a part of night one and starts the count half a day later because the count starts after his death not before.

"He will not suffer his Holy one to see corruption."
Corruption or decay sets in after 72 hrs. If Jesus body spent 3 days in the grave [Thursday night , Friday night and ,Saturday night], his body would decay. So thar Scripture about "As Jonah spent three days and three night in the grave so small the son of man be three days in the belly of the earth" is a simile.
Remember that Jonah did not die, but Jesus died.
It does not mean he would spend exactly 3 days, rather a short period in which decay could not set in.
So, Jesus was buried on Friday evening BEFORE passover, He was in the grave from Friday evening, all through Saturday, and he rose AFTER the Sabbath, on the First day of the new week according to the Gospels.[in less than 72 hrs] His body did not see corruption.
Jesus resurrected on the first day of the week.

    Simple Math:
If Jesus dies on Friday, you only have 2 of the three nights. It couldn’t have been on Friday. If Jesus dies on Wednesday, you get a 72 hour period. However, you also have too many nights (Wednesday night, Thursday night, Friday night, Saturday night). Fortunately, the Bible never specifies that there was 72 hours. It just says that Jesus would be in the tomb for three days and three nights (Sunday being day 3 in the tomb.)
    Thursday night (Night 1)
    Friday (Day 1)
    Friday night (Night 2)
    Saturday (Day 2)
    Saturday night (Night 3)
    Sunday (Day 3)
The only theory that fits is that there was a High Day on Friday and that Jesus’ Crucifixion was on Thursday

This is complete error. The scripture in content is talking about the grave. The timeline does not start until the body dies to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.... The Lord left the body.... And on the 3rd morning he raised up himself.....3 days.(morning). And 3 nights. Making on the third day (morning) rising.
The body was taken down Friday evening. Given to Joseph.... Buried Friday evening.
    1st night...Saturday 1st day (1st morning)
    ...2nd night
In the tomb. Sunday 2 day (morning) 3rd night
Monday 3 day (morning).... he rose up himself.

After researching the "3 Day" question, my conclusion is that we do not--and cannot--know conclusively whether the traditional Holy Week Chronology (crucifixion on Good Friday) or the Alternative Chronology (crucifixion on Wed) is accurate.
The fact is that there are sound Scripture-based arguments for BOTH cases (though people on both sides of the argument seem to dig in their heels and refuse to admit it!).
It is interesting to explore and debate it, but at the end of the day we cannot know with certainty and all that really matters is that--whatever the timeline--the crucifixion and resurrection happened, forever changing history and our fate. Praise the Lord!

🚨PLEASE READ, HERE’S PROOF THAT JESUS DIED ON FRIDAY AND ROSE ON SUNDAY MORNING, LET’S KEEP IN MIND THAT THE SABBATH, THE SEVENTH DAY, WHICH IS CALLED SATURDAY, THE DAY GOD RESTED FROM ALL HIS WORK, IS MENTIONED IN THE SCRIPTURES CONCERNING JESUS’ DEATH!
JESUS’ BODY COULDN’T REMAIN ON THE CROSS ON THE SABBATH DAY, DUE TO THE PREPARATION FOR THE PASS OVER. READ SCRIPTURE BELOW TO GET AN UNDERSTANDING FOR YOURSELF! 🚨
And it was the Preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King John 19:14
[30] When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
[31] The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. John 19:30-31
There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day ; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand. John 19:42
And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.
[2] And very early in the morning the first day of the week, (SUNDAY, THE SABBATH IS PAST) they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.
      Mark 16:1-2
[5] And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted.
[6] And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is RISEN; HE IS NOT HERE: behold the place where they laid him. Mark 16:5-6 KJV

In the basic Greek text, the Bible does not speak of Yeshua/Jesus being resurrected "on the first day of the week" or "on a Sunday", but "on the one/first of the Sabbaths" (Mk 16:2; Lk 24:1; Jn 20:1), that is, the first of the series of exactly 7 Sabbaths to be counted each year between Passover (15 Nisan) and Pentecost. Mark makes it extremely simple, saying "early on the first Sabbath" (Mark 16:9) in the singular genitive (early of the first Sabbath). You can't say it any clearer than that. When was 2023 the "first Sabbath?" Every Jewish calendar shows it (April 7/8, 2023). All 7 Sabbaths can be seen sin any online Jewish calendar.
It is very sad that not even the people of Israel do not know the calendar described in Leviticus 23, so they cannot know what the "first Sabbath" is, but instead think of the Sunday of the Pope.
Yeshua said "3 days and 3 nights," which was the sign of Jonah, not 1.5 days of the pope. The Good Friday-Easter-Sunday teaching is a pagan teaching. The Bible teaches the "first Sabbath" and there are extremely many correctly translated Bibles worldwide. Even the Luther Bible says "in the evening of the same Sabbath (not Sunday)..." (John 20:19). Yeshua knows what he is saying and no one has the right to twist the sign of the Messiah (3 days and 3 nights).

    • @menorah9069
      @menorah9069 ปีที่แล้ว

@@vasyl.petrun Of course, the "first Sabbath" refers to a weekly Sabbath and not an annual Sabbath (high Sabbath, feast day). It is the "first Sabbath" of the "seven Sabbaths" that must be counted each year between Passover (Nisan 15) and Pentecost (50th day). This is all very easy to understand, but only if you know God's calendar, which is described in the Torah.
The New Testament clearly names precisely this "one/first of the Sabbaths" or "on the first Sabbath" (in the singular genitive) in Mk 16:9. An alleged Sunday resurrection of Jesus is not to be found in the original Bible and many correct bible translations and whoever changes the wording of the Word of God will have to answer for this before God in judgment because he has deceived the children of God into pagan and unbiblical festivals.
Please take a look at the Jewish calendar for 2023, where you can see it very clearly. The 14th Nisan was on a Wednesday, then came the 15th Nisan (Thursday) and the "first Sabbath" of the 7 weekly Sabbaths until Pentecost was on the 17th Nisan. Everything is so easy to understand if we don't twist the Bible.
If you disagree, then please say how God should have expressed it differently in ancient Greek when he meant the "one/first of the Sabbaths" (plural genitive) and "early of the first Sabbath" (singular genitive). ok?
There is only one possibility, namely the one that appears 7 times in the NT. And that should then mean "early on one/first of the Sundays" (plural genitive) or "early of the first Sunday" (singular genitive) or "after the Sabbath" or "early on the first day of the week"??? No, the Word of God is extremely clear n this point, God speaks 7 time of the Sabbath but the pope and his followers speak 6 times of the Sunday.

If Jesus died on Friday, your explanation sounds right, but why do you believe that Jesus died on Friday? Is it because of Sabbath right after His death? Jesus died on the Passover(Nissan 14) and Unleavened Bread begins from Nissan 15 for 7 days. The first day of the Unleavened Bread is High day Sabbath(Leviticus 23:5-7). It is an annual Sabbath. It shouldn't fall weekly Sabbath(Saturday). Please read Mark 16:1 and Luke 23:56 and compare them. You will find two different Sabbaths. Jesus rose from the tomb on Sunday, it is the Feast of Firstfruit (Nissan 17) and He became the first fruit of resurrection. I suggest you to read Matthew 12:40 as well. He must be three days and three nights in the tomb.

Some Christians had claimed, the THEORY that Christ Jesus was resurrected, "just before the Sundown of Saturday Evening"... But there was an Earthquake, and the Tombstone door was rolled open by the Angel dressed in White in the early morning of Sunday and still "DARK" (no sunlight yet) witnessed by the Roman Soldiers who were mortified (scared like dead), and by Mary Magdalene... (Luke's Gospel)
The THEORY of "Resurrection of Christ just before the Sundown of Saturday Evening" does not hold any solid proof or witnesses even the Roman soldiers guarding the tomb...

But, JESUS said that just as Jonah was in the belly of the Whale for 3 days and 3 nights, so shall the Son of Man/Son of GOD be in the heart of the Earth. That is 72 hours. He was buried right before sundown Wednesday night and He arose at the end of the weekly Sabbath. So, that, by the time the women approached the Tomb, He was (already) in His arisen state.

This year, 2023 passion week will unfold exactly as it did almost 2000 years ago.
In Your video, you will need to back up everything one day. He rose more than likely Saturday evening for He said 3 days and 3 nights I'm sure he would not spend one second more or less than want His word says. The stone was rolled away sometime Saturday evening or early Sunday morning before dawn for us to get in. Jesus did not need a stone to roll away to get out. So you see they had to bury him Wednesday evening before the beginning of a high Sabbath. In this case, the feast of unleavened bread a high Sabbath John 19:31. This appointed feast of "Unleavened Bread" happens just after Passover another appointed time of Yahweh. So you see he was crucified Wednesday afternoon. The exact time all Israelites were sacrificing the Passover lamb for their Sader dinner that evening. This is not for me to prove I'm just a watchman. th-cam.com/video/EmtyYqq11Qc/w-d-xo.html Being as this video is five years old you may have already discovered it through the work of the Holy Spirit. In that case, never mind :)
