Interestingly enough, I use the long E-flat fingering. I don’t believe the short fingering was presented in the book I used to learn to play each note. That said, it won’t hurt to try the short fingering. I’ll see if it’ll work on the bassoon I have.
I am considering taking up the bassoon because I am fascinated with the show Sesame Street, and they have a lot of "punchline" musical interludes that involve a bassoon. I can play keyboard and trombone by ear, so I may have a local bassoon teacher show me some fingerings so I can try replicating the bassoon parts in those Sesame Street punchline interludes.
I can play all of the woodwind instruments except for bassoon. I never knew how to turn it to play any notes. This video helps. Now the fingering, WOW! I will leave it alone. As for beginners, I doubt that there are any young band programs that would start students on bassoon. More than likely, they learn clarinet, flute, or saxophone first.
@@whishkers808 for me personally, my progress is going very well! It was a bit hard in the beginning to learn how to play low notes, but it got easier as I went on. I definitely recommend that you try to learn it from now
As an oboist, I was curious about the bassoon’s fingerings, hearing like how unique and “alien” they are. In the future I’m hoping to extend my playing to a doubler of all double reed instruments
Switching from string bass to bassoon, just tried playing for the first time and I'm already VERY confused! I can already tell that this will be very fun.
Will do! It has been awhile since I’ve posted but I have some videos coming out in the near future 😊 feel free to ask any questions in the meantime though!! You’ve got this! 💪
I was struggling to play any notes before I watched this video and every video that tried to explain it was ether blurry or confusing you explained it perfectly and showed what note to play on a different type of bassoon great video I’m subscribed

@@BuildingaBassoonist Thank you! I’m really excited as I’ve heard not a lot of people are playing the bassoon these days and I want to change that. I’m going to be my school’s first bassoon player.
@@BuildingaBassoonist I’ve actually started playing it now! I’m not great, but I’m excited. And my band teacher said your video was the best one he could find for beginner bassoonist!
@@BuildingaBassoonist surprisingly, at first it was like a puzzle but now i just need to get my harmonics right, especially that low Eb, no idea how to play it !
I love the bassoon in music, and I worship the people who play it, but I'm kind of glad that I didn't try it myself. Bass clarinet was hard enough for me.
Great question! Because many people who pick up the bassoon for the first time (at least in the U.S.) are in some type of band ensemble either in a school or community setting. Band keys require us to be very comfortable in Bb major. It’s unfortunate that both Bb and Eb are trickier notes for beginners, but that’s why I wanted to provide some help with those particular fingerings in this video. If you can learn Bb and Eb, the other ones will come easily. 😊
Please is it in the case of every Bassoon? I am asking because the first five notes you talked about make deferent sounds on the Bassoon that I am learning, FBT Olympic, when I play open note with the whisper key F, it sounds Aflat on the Bassoon I am learning. Could it be that it is in a different key? Please help.
It is the same on every bassoon. It could be that there is something wrong with your bassoon (most likely) or your reed. Has your bassoon had maintenance in the last 2 years? If not, take it to a repair shop. Also make sure that you’re playing with reeds made by a professional bassoonist as some “student” quality reeds make it difficult to play the right pitches. Hope this helps!
@@BuildingaBassoonist It is a new Bassoon, but the shape of it is deferent from the one you are using. The whisper is not touching the Bocal it is rather touching the Wing Joint.
@@successtsribi988 if that’s the case, it sounds like your bassoon might not be very good. There are some cheaper models of bassoons that are not made well and have issues that make them difficult to play. It’s hard to diagnose what’s going on in a comment - I suggest you try to get a lesson with a teacher to figure it out. I just use left hand index finger and ring finger without thumb ._. And for C and D and the other notes i dont use left thumb
I use 1 3 4 and the Bb key
i never realized how easy my alto sax is until i started bassoon. thanks for these videos!
Sure thing! Hope it’s going well!
