      What about a bassoon it can go higher than a piccolo

      The standard, concert flute can play almost the entire 4th octave, all the way to C8 (maybe skipping A7 and B7).
      The fingerings are at www.wfg.woodwind.org/flute/fl_alt_4.html
      It is like climbing Mt. Everest. I would not even attempt it ;-)
      Just for fun, I tried a G#7. Forget it!
      In the other direction, the first octave of a grenadilla piccolo can provide a nice, woody tone, rather than a shrill tone. I wrote a piece in which the flute carries the melody and the piccolo provides the accompaniment.

    I love your videos, they have been extremely helpful, so thank you so much for sharing all these. Regarding this particular video do you have any recommendations on exercises for strictly third octave notes? Something to help me get a little more comfortable with the fingerings especially? I ask because I’m having a bit of trouble with a section in a piece my band is playing right now. I’m unsure if you’re familiar with the work Tulsa: A Symphonic Portrait in Oil by Don Gillis but there is a section toward the end of the piece that features sixteenth run patterns that alternate third octave C-B nat-A-B nat that is understandably very awkward. This is the type of example I’m citing for these kinds of exercises, and I apologize for such a long post.

    Thank you for the helpful videos! For the high Bb/A#, when would you not use the little finger? I printed out a chart that says to play it without the pinky finger but i'm practicing the way you showed it since it's easier for me. So far I can play most notes fairly consistent but the highest C is really tough!

    I can hit the G sharp, A, and B flat in 3rd but it's not consistent. The B flat is probably the worst lol! The main problem with C and C# is that I can't hold the flute properly. I am trying the alternate fingerings but transitioning between notes became harder. I think you're the funniest flute TH-camr so far. I find myself chuckling or snorting from time to time.

    I can now just reach the high C, third octave. Going for the 4th octave up to high G! Will be searching your videos for help.
    UPDATE: starting to develop the tone on high D, after that the fingerings get just to funky. Someday I’ll go higher than D...maybe!
    Also, I was having difficulty w high B, my fingering charts have the baby finger down. I stoped with the pinky and was able to hit B consistently and I liked how it sounded better. I was going to ask you what was the standard but I found this vid again and you answered that question! Yea! NO pinky on high B!

      you cannot and will not be able to play the G of the fourth octave, because firstly, those notes cannot be reached by even a professional, secondly, because they are so literally mega high that they are not used because otherwise it hurts

    Correct me if I'm wrong but for E flat you dont need to cover all fingers you can just make your fingers same as D and put your left hands pinky finger just like you are doing low G#

    • @TheFlutePractice
      @TheFlutePractice  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Selin Suar yes, but your index finger and both baby fingers should be down. So like low D with Eb key and G# key and so all your fingers are on a key. This is the standard recommended fingering and other figurings would be alternate fingerings and I would only use them as an exception. Does that make sense?

    Titiana, aside from the low B ability, are there any other advantages from having a B foot? I haven't come across music with a low b since, well I don't think I ever have. So why are most flutes I see incorporating a b foot? My current flute has a b foot, I think for new flute order I like the c foot.
    Thanks for the great videos.

    • @PierreC2
      @PierreC2 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      sorry the question is not for me but i like to say Something about it. i have both type of flute at home and i can tell you that there is a lot less air resistance playing with a C joint...and to me it seems to be just enough, a lot easier to reach the high notes. Of course i'm not a pro so... . So if i would suggest a flute to anyone i'd suggest the sankyo Etude C joint close hole..it plays as good as my other flute a Pearl 795 open close B joint.

    • @TheFlutePractice
      @TheFlutePractice  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is such an individual question I think and really depends on the instrument and player. Some flute have a better sound with the B foot, some better with C. The top C is more difficult with the B foot but there are some pieces that go to low B (although admittedly not enough to warrant buying a really expensive foot joint!) I think one of the greatest advantages for me is practicing B regularly and then C feels so much easier. The reason I ordered a B foot for my flute is because it is very expensive to order the B foot joint afterwards (it cost pretty much the same when buying the flute) and I do use it fairly often. Totally individual and you need to decide what you need and if it is worth it :) hope that helps

      I have run into a few occasions where I had to play the oboe part (our band didnt have an oboe player) and low B was included. Of course this was discovered while sight reading at a concert and I have a C foot student model flute. Oopsie. Fake it til ya make it. 😉

    Добра. Спасибо за видео. На моей флейте флейте нет рычага чтобы взять ноту си третьей октавы. Что-же, буду брать ее методом передува =)

    got any good exercises jumping between these crazy fingerings? i tend to manage max up and down 3 notes without cramping 😂.

    • @TheFlutePractice
      @TheFlutePractice  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1 step at a time. Practice without playing, but rather sitting down holding your flute calmly move between just two fingerings (for example E to F). Watch your fingers as you do this and manage the tension. Then, slowly add more notes, 1 at a time until you feel comfortable. If you get stuck at a finger combination stop and come back to it tomorrow!

    Can't go above A 😢. I'm self taught and I don't actually know if it's only me or my flute is bad at high register. I can get some of the 3rd octave notes but the sound is very airy

      i'm not professional at all but what i do is loosen my jaw and make my embouchure change based on how high you have to go. sometimes i have to push my jaw forward to get it out

      Hi! I will try get to this but it may take a little while because I have quite a few requests lined up. Very cool song. In the meantime I found this. It may be helpful to you and I will probably use it too as guideline...It is not perfect but may work as a base? th-cam.com/video/yybwxWefPfY/w-d-xo.html
