    I was at this particular concert at the Festspiel Haus in August of 1974 and remember it well. Our family had recently moved to Vienna for 3 years and would frequent the Salzburg Festival in both the Spring and Summer for incredible performances. I was only 16 but the memories of these amazing performances will always be with me. Karajan was at his peak during this period and it was just magical to be inside this beautiful hall, where you could hear a pin drop. Karajan just mesmerized both the orchestra and the audience. Such amazing music and so beautifully performed.

      Know what you mean about HVK's mesmeric power. Saw him just the one time: his last appearance in London, 1989. I've seen quite a few stars in the flesh. The only two who were comparably magnetic were Bernstein and Alain Delon.

    Staggering performance. Rivals Karajan's legendary studio recording for Decca from the early 1960s with the same orchestra.

    I have heard quite a few recordings of Dvorak 8 and I have to say that this is one of the very best I have encountered.
    My preferred studio recording has long been the Kubelik BPO. It has such wide awake high spirits. Very charming, beautiful and bustling with energy.
    This HVK Vienna Phil. live performance is powerful and lyrical. Amazingly played and conducted. The detail is wonderful. Every second of the work is inspired. A truly great performance. WOW! A keeper for sure.

    I notice most, here, the exquisite phrasing and separation of each orchestral section as the movements move along. it is not sloppy, as are most recordings of this symphony. Karajan paid massive attention to how the sections interact with one another. Unfortunately, unless one can tolerate the ruination of the music by advertisements, it is not possible to listen in any meaningful way. The commodification of everything on TH-cam is utterly hideous.

    This is not only the greatest performance and recording of this glorious work, it's the greatest performance and recording ever made of a symphony. I don't say that lightly; Maestro Karajan and the glorious orchestra cover themselves in glory here. I think Karajan's performances and recordings in Vienna are far and away the best things he ever did, far better and less mannered than his more celebrated Berlin recordings, and better recorded and more musically mature than his earlier EMI Philharmonia efforts. The Vienna Holst PLANETS, Tchaikovsky ballet suites, the abridged Adam GISELLE, the Grieg Peer Gynt, the Brahms Third Symphony, the Beethoven Seventh, the Strauss Waltzes, Puccini's TOSCA, J. Strauss DIE FLEDERMAUS, and the Richard Strauss tone poems, for example, are all touchstones for these works, magnificently conducted and played. I also think his live performances in general have an excitement that many of his studio recordings do not, such as this one.

    • @lsmart
      @lsmart 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, it's kind of impossible to say it's the greatest recording of a symphony, since one cannot compare apples and oranges. However, I will agree that this is the best recording of THIS symphony (at least from what I have managed to hear). And I say this despite my personal dislike for Karajan (due to his Nazi past and Nazi-like demeanor), and despite my fanatical love for Kertesz (who unlike his usual heavenly performances esp. in all Dvorak music, had somewhat of a letdown in this symphony for some odd reason, lacking the usual thrilling vigor). There are only about 10 seconds of this recording that I do not like that much, namely, from 36:00 to 36:10, when the exciting speed becomes wild, excessive and imprecise speed, before returning under control again from there on.

      @@zanderrose I respectfully disagree. People may know the name Dvorak(most probably don't know his first name) maybe just because it's a little difficult/funny to say, but beyond his 9th symphony, many don't know his music at all, and it's a darn shame because it's all so great. It's hard for me to say that he, or anyone for that matter, is my favorite composer, I guess it depends on the mood I'm in and what I want to hear, but I have hardly heard a piece by Dvorak which I haven't liked.

    I nastri dell'ORF (la Radio austriaca di Stato) con le registrazioni delle esecuzioni del Festival di Salisburgo - non soltanto di Karajan, ma SOPRATTUTTO quelle - andrebbero pubblicati in dischi (cd) per l'immenso valore storico e didattico (per le giovani generazioni di musicisti) che costituiscono.

    • @andreacolombini316
      @andreacolombini316 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      C'è un piccolo problema: che se si mettessero a pubblicare tutti i live inediti di Karajan, il mercato - che già adesso VENDE PIU' KARAJAN di tutti gli altri messi insieme, e meno male! - verrebbe distrutto. Ho troppe registrazioni inedite del Vecchio per non poter dire a chiare lettere che esistono solo LUI e gli altri. Chiunque essi siano stati o siano. Da quei nastri, da quelle registrazioni, da quei video che possiedo ormai da più di 30 anni e che ho trovato in tutto il mondo, ho imparato quasi tutto quello che so e che faccio sul podio. Il didatta più grande, se solo si ha la forza e l'umiltà di ascoltarlo, studiarlo, osservarlo.

    • @renato45222
      @renato45222 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrea Colombini Gentile Maestro, sono d'accordo sul fatto che Karajan sia stato e continui ad essere un grande didatta. Io stesso, da ragazzo e quando potevo, registravo su nastro sul mio ormai vecchio ma splendido Revox alcune esecuzioni trasmesse dalla Rai in collegamento con l'ORF, ai tempi in cui "servizio pubblico" voleva dire qualcosa.

    By far the best performance of Dvorak's 8 (imho). A superb brass, especially those wild, elephantic parts like 28:50. And the ending can't get any better. Kertesz is maybe more precise and balanced, but Karajan here nails every single moment.

    What is the source of this recording? It is remarkably good, technically speaking, and it puzzles me somehow the very low tape hiss one notices. After all, if one assumes it is a domestic recording made at someone's home from an FM broadcast, this is after all 1974, a substantially more noticeable level of tape hiss is to be expected, the sound being very DG-ish by the way ... Also, when I listened to it though a good stereo system I detected a change in ambience when a movement ends and the usual audience noise between movements sets in, only to return to the previous, cd-ish ambience when the music starts again..... very suspicious, I wonder if we're being tricked and this is just a regular studio recording with audience noise (remarkably absent when music is being played) with audience noise spliced in between movements.

      @NoahGPalmerify 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's because the opening triad is in the exact inversion that the main melody of Howl's Moving Castle also opens with, just in a slower note value. Also they are both in minor (possibly the same key), and both in three, and both have a similar melancholic/allegretto feel. I say all of this because I too made the same exact connection while learning the piece.

    Normally not a fan of Karajan. But this is good. For me, most recordings take the second movement too fast, so that that staccato strings (later woodwinds) in the second lyric tune sound rushed. Here the tempo is just right for me. Of course this is a live performance and I think you can get away with that more than in a studio recording.
