I'm zone 5b/6a and I've actually had great success growing them outdoors as a perennial in a raised bed. So long as the drainage is good you should be fine.

I’m in Montana and I saw they are growing really well in Canada! So I bought 100!😂 I made a metal mesh box to plant 90 of them (so the voles don’t eat them) and I have ten in a pot to bring in over the winter just in case. I made sure to give them lots of wood chips and sand in their dirt. It is October and I have leaves coming up in both, but we shall see if I get flowers this year. I’m so excited!

Can we see an update on growing saffron? I’m in zone 5, and wondering if you keep in pots all the time, and how you winter…bringing them into on a garage? Would it be a perennial?

Were the bulbs expensive? I knew the spice is expensive. Thanks for sharing and happy growing.

I got a few free saffron seeds years ago with my order and never planted them! I wonder if they are still in my seedbox somewheres.. anyone have tips on growing from seed?

Interesting! Ive never grown from seed. Give it a try! Based on the plant i would think that the same soil conditions as the corm are optimal and to be moist until the seed germenates. Once it germinates I would think to allow it to dry between waterings as it will want to store its own water to build the corm.
