I have had a set of Def Tech Towers for about ten years and have loved them. They do need experimenting with placement and may be too imposing for your living room. Mine have 12 inch built in powered subwoofers and have more than enough bass. Forget about using them in an apartment or Condo. I am assuming that in ten years Def tech has made improvements so they are probably incredible. I am wondering if you have tried Golden Ear towers and if so, how do you think the Def Techs compare to the Golden Ears? The Def Techs are not cheap but I have found on occasion around the holidays they have gone on sale for a good discount after they have been on the market a few years. No you are not crazy for comparing these to much more expensive speakers. I paid about $4000.00 for mine 10 years ago and that is not cheap by any measure but I have had my Def Tech towers for about 10 years and I would be hard pressed to find as enjoyable a pair of speakers for anywhere near their price.
I think it would be an interesting video. I know in this particular review you mention things being tweaked 2 or 3 diffferent ways and I have no idea what all that REALLY means, especially in real world listening. I have never used room treatments or any other DSP items. Makes me very curious how my bi polar Mirage 1295is would/ could sound.
Just had to say how enjoyable and fun your reviews are and lately you are breaking new ground in humor .Kristi has really upped her game lately and is a a great finisher for all the reviews. You are one lucky man to have someone who actually cares about audio/video with the same passion as you do and she's funny as hell. Thanks for never caving into the temptations of taking the money and running. You are appreciated in so many ways.
It’s made me really hope for a lady in my life that’ll appreciate audio. My exes sure didn’t. Doesn’t necessarily have to be like Kristi or anything, but just someone that I can nerd out and blabber on about soundstage and imaging to and share my passion with!! Lol
@@dalstar925 I’m happy just that I have some understanding/tolerance of the purchases. Wifey doesn’t “get” our Klipsch Forte bedroom speakers but tolerates them and their amplifier nightlight 😆 and she helped audition our Focal Kanta 2s and raved about them. Wasn’t thrilled at the price but hey, who would be. Likes to say “there’s a holiday in NYC sitting there” and I have to correct her and say, more like a holiday in Tokyo 😬
I commented a week ago asking for this review and I spent this whole review smiling listening to you talk about what I love about these, I’m 18 years old and grew up around my dads super towers and they’re what got me into hifi, and now a pair of BP 8060 supertowers sit in my bedroom flanking my TV with a 12 inch home made sub with an svs driver in it, as one of my favorite hifi TH-camrs that I’ve been watching since I was about 15-16 years old, thank you for this review I loved it and it reminded me why I got into the hobby
I’m happy you opened the door to the Wilson comparison. Audio is a subjective experience and you relating your experience is valid. Many audiophiles are very signal path obsessed and have bought into the pure path idea. That also aligns with triode or pure class A amps, high end cables and power supplies. That, combined with a great source and recording can produce a great experience. But I have to agree that the new world of class D power, DSP, room correction, etc. can also produce quite a thrill. Isn’t that what this hobby is all about?
I liked the mockup of using different fabrics instead of the same black fabric 👏 I haven’t really given much thought about DefTech In probably 10+ years but after this review 🤔 I’m really digging the FUN aspect of these speakers 👍🏼 Another great review 👏👏👏 Arnold
Those different fabric options you put up there…WOW! I wish some of these companies would call you and Kristi before releasing products. What an amazing idea
This was such a fun and great review to listen to. Still kicking the BP7001 fronts and BP7002 rears ....20 plus years later. This video is making me consider the new Deftech Center channel.
I think there will be a ton of people really interested in these speakers. But they will be put off because of potentially needing to place them out from the wall and the black fabric aesthetics. Completely completely agree on adding some other fabric choices. Impressed that they impressed both of you since you have heard so many other products. Thanks.
I loved the pictures of the different fabric-- what a difference. I think it showed Def Tech how important it is to dress a speaker properly and size it properly. If someone is spending $5,000, then they have to spend at least $1,000 on the appearance of the speaker because it will make it more appealing and drive up their sales.
I've been waiting for a review of Def Techs! Loved the video! If I ever build a home theatre, I might start with the DM60s. My first "hi -end" speakers were Def Tech Mythos ST-L Super Towers. Those speakers really did make me become an "audiophile". I could hear a huge difference from anything I'd ever owned. I eventually upgraded to Sonus Faber Olympica Nova 2, but I couldn't part with the Def Tech Mythos so I gave them to my dad to "borrow".
I've really been looking forward to this review. I own the BP 9060s and distinctly remember the first time hearing the Def Tech super towers and the lasting impression they made. I 100% agree that positioning and setup is crucial and still have not mastered it in my current space. Your review reinforces how imperative (and painstaking) it is but also that the payoff is worth it. An excellent, transparent and spot on review. Well done 👏
I think it is absolutely wonderful that you compare all speakers too high end expensive speakers. To find and hear speakers that are way way cheaper but sound like a million dollar speakers!!! it doesn't get any better than that! LOVE U BOTH
Okay, okay…I want to come to your house and hear these!! That is if you ever get them back. I’ve been a fan since f your channel for at least 3 years and have never heard the two of you be so enthusiastic! That sez a whole lot. These speakers could not work in my space, but man do I want to hear them. Thanks guys for a really great engaging review. What fun 🎉
Great review ... thank you! I worked for Klipsch in 1988-1989 building KG-4, Heresy, Forte, Cornwall, and Chorus speakers before joining the US Navy. In 1993, while stationed in Maryland, I walked into a stereo shop in Germantown, MD to buy a set of Klipsch Fortes; however, the salesman asked if I had ever heard of a new Maryland-based company called Definitive Technology. I chuckled a bit and said, "Uh...No! Where are your Klipsch speakers?" So, he took me into a listening room to hear the Forte. Sitting right next to them were Def Tech BP-20's. Today, after 30-years of being packed literally around the world with me and sustaining "drunken sailor" abuse few speakers on the planet could have withstood, those same BP-20's are sitting in my living room ... and they still sound freaking AMAZING! But, it's time to upgrade, and though I am a Klipsch disciple ... I'm going to pass on the RP-8000F. I'm going back to the DEF TECH well for the second time since 1993.
I have to agree with you on this 100%. In this day and age I think DefTech really need to have optional colors besides black. Hopefully they’ll see this video and take note.
CORRECTION: Apologies, I mistakenly refer to the DM80's tweeter as "titanium" when they are aluminum oxide. This doesn't change my feelings or critique of the DM80's top end performance. Furthermore, all of the data/measurements are still correct. I simply mixed up my words. My apologies for any and all confusion.
I recall when Definitive Technology came around in the 90's and for the money then they had our senses peeked and the wallet happy enough to purchase a pair of the BP10's. Loved everything about the experience in the showroom and then struggled with placement and room size. Having to take a second mortgage, defeating their value, to build a new Room just for the speakers was not on any radar. or warranted.. But dang that soundstage stage and impact on the low end.
This was an exciting review for me because I own Definitive Technology's other BP 9040 tower speakers as well as their CS 9060, SR 9040 and A90 Atmos modules which are altogether fantastic for both music and films. I've never concerned myself with speaker styling, to me it's just a speaker, my only concern is how it sounds, but that's just me. It's nice to see Definitive Technology getting some attention.
I got to listen to these a couple weeks ago. I have the older Definitive Technology CLR3000 and BP7001SC and am looking at the DM80 and DM30 as their replacements. Got to say the DM80 doesn't disappoint and neither does the DM30. I didn't care for the 9000 series, these new ones remind me a lot of the 7000 series, which was Definitive last great speakers. Great review of them.
Kristi makes a great point about the field of vision being obstructed because of how far they come out into the room. I didn’t notice it while the various pictures of your room was being shown.
I am really happy to see this review for a brand I fell in love with in 1994. I had fantastic auditions with the BP 30 or their 9040 series and was very close to buying them had I not accidentally found Mirage 1295is bipolar speakers, which 25+ years later are still my main listening speakers. Your thoughts on the tweeter are very valid, as it was the shrillness at higher volumes (a thing I still love to do) that directed me to get the Mirages instead. Nice to hear Def Tech is still gettin it done!
We need more of Kristi unfiltered, guys - her response to the Wilson resemblance to an ATM is priceless. I rarely laugh at review vids but that was spontaneous as it gets - I wish you hadn't bleeped it out. As for her fear that the Def Tech speakers would be 'bangers', that's a compliment in many musical genres, esp EDM, but I agree that these dominate your room. Thanks for this review - I really needed an antidote for Monday :D
Thanks for this review, although I'd like to have these speakers I wouldn't have the space. But what I like the most wasn't the speakers but the review. If this was a TV show, this would be my favorite episode. The way you express your enjoyment with these speakers got me excited with you. I wish I could have been there with you and not just about the speakers but to see the joy that you express while doing this review.
I almost crapped my pants while driving when she said” is it one of those that look like an ATM machine!” Damn that was funny. Christie‘a brutal honesty is the best! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
*Thanks to everyone who watched the video! We sincerely appreciate it. If you feel so inclined, please give it a "Like".* Also, my Longhorns won yesterday and are heading to the Sweet Sixteen!! 🤘
This is a great review. I just got the BP 9040s. My first exer Def Tech speakers. I also go the CS 9040. These speakers are phenomenal. I can only imagine. How great the new Dymension series sounds.
I have a set of bp 2002 from 20 years ago. Rated to 17 hertz. Love them . i agree they are picky in the set up. But man the sound. Thanks for the review.
Yaaaaaaay Def Techs. I am so elated that you two fell in love with their beleivable soundstage as have I. My units are the pre-historic originals: (BP10S X 4 & BP8S X 2 & CLR2002): BP10s had the 6.5 in woofs & BP8s and CLR2002 both had the smaller 5.75 in woofs I wonder how the performance has been improved since 1990, short of the obvious added powered-subwoofer per tower? I bought their SuperCube2 (8in x 3) subwoofer at that period... and it hits solid 20bB in my room. You are RIGHT about DefTech towers being finicky BUT they are a tweekers wet dream. Mine are optimal at 20in away from the back walls and 3 to 4 ft from the left or right walls. Their sound is infinitely augmented with the equally tweekable Yama A2080 AVR. I tweek them all at least once a month like a NUT. 😊😂 Q: IS THERE ANYTHING ABOUT THESE NEW 5.25IN WOOF TOWERS THAT BEGS UPGRADING (outside built-in subs addition)? God Bless and keep you BOTH ❤🎉🙏
Also used 9060s in a typical living room, and they definitely took up space, but for how the room worked (rental, so wasn't doing anything to the room) but they ROCKED and still felt good spatially and sounded amazing. Add not needing separate subs or atmos speakers that look awful, it's a great space budget
I'm so excited for them!! I'm even more excited for the Coach Terry after inheriting such a messed up situation and having to continue to be called "interim" head coach. Sometimes, the Texas athletics dept act like complete fools. :)
@@KristiWright he’s done an amazing job! Lot of ridiculousness going in college athletics departments right now. Btw, when the DefTech X Robinson/Wright line comes out I will be ready with my credit card 🤤💸.
Yes a full range sound is where it's at! The fact I'm in a small 13 x 11.5 ft living room, I decided to go with standmounts and a stereo pair of Rel 8" subwoofers. I feel at least doing it this way there's very minimal room gain! BTW another splendid video once again.
My room is similar in size, and went with a pair of stand mounts and the 10" Rel HT1003. We sit about 8 ft from the speakers, and I absolutely love it. ...even in our upstairs living room, where the space is 24 x 20 ft with an 18' ceiling and it's open to the kitchen, we have standmounts and a sub, and it fills the space all they way into the kitchen. But we don't listen to anything at screaming loud volume...
@@juliobello4561 - love it. I have a cheap $125 Polk sub from 2003 upstairs in our living room, which can get a little flabby. The REL doesn’t have that issue. I’m itching to replace the Polk with a REL this year.
@@craigjohnchronicles2504 when listening at low volumes, I find it beneficial to turn the AVR sub gain up a couple of notches.. but even without the extra gain, when I walk around my little flat (apartment) the mids and highs may fade away but the lows always stick with me 😁
@@juliobello4561 I've had many subwoofers throughout my lifetime but it was only when I tried a rel subwoofer with their high level connection is when I realised what a full range sound is supposed to sound like. I personally think if one has standmount speakers it's an absolute must! The full range sound within my little room is phenomenal and I might add no bass traps needed! One thing I will add after experimenting I personally didn't like the sound when positioned near field! (distortion was giving me headaches) Click on the red dragon twice and hit the Adele two channel sound test video to view where they actually sounded their best.
Kristi made my day. 😂 But seriously i wish Wilson was open to an honest comparison. My experience with def tech's was always that they were a fun speakers. I never bought a pair. The size kinda stopped me. And You're not crazy to compare them.
Hi Andrew & Kristi. Glad to see this interview for me Def Tech had kinda fallen off my radar. Almost brought a pr some years ago to replace my Forte lls but did like the high end in the Def Techs also did want to fool with Keeping the cover on them clean. When you had yours was it a problem? And yes you can compare a $5.000 pr of speakers to a set of speakers that cost more that some people's HOMES! A lot of times those ultra high dollar speakers are just to flat and Boring 😴. Nothing against the High end. But you got to put some soul in them. In order to touch the persons soul. Keep up the great work your doing👍
What a fun review. I think I need to demo these in store to get the plum tingles haha God I would love to see Wilson audio actually send you a set to review. I’m not saying they won’t be good but for money like that they better excel at every aspect.
I purchased the BP model before these, and no, I don't think you're crazy comparing them to crazy expensive speakers. Listening at my dealer, I compared the Def Tech's I ended up purchasing to a 50k system from Paradigm, and, these held their own, and may have been even better in ways. In fact, I thought I was crazy at the time thinking these were that good, for 1/10 of the cost. Everything Sandy Gross has started on his own, Def Tech, Golden Ear, have all made incredible reference products, for a value cost. 5k for these, 10k for the T-Ref Golden Ear Triton, they're incredible speakers at any price point that I think can take on speakers costing multiple, dozens, even hundreds times more. Great Review!
I always love definitive technology, still running my bp20s from 30 years ago!! Still sound great !! I have the bp2000s studio monitors 450s D11s and CS9060S
Very nice review...I loved Def Tech back in the day and owned several pair before. Beating Klipsch in dynamics is a task in itself. Technology has made strides in making less expensive product that give you high-end performance!
Great review. I owned the Def Tech BP30s for many years and had similar thoughts. I loved the lively and enveloping sound initially, but as time went on I found the treble to be too grating and even ended up putting foam panels behind the speakers to tame the reflective sound from the rear facing speakers. I feel like they need to improve their tweeters before I consider going back. You should need room correction for 2 channel music
A great review would be to look at the Golden Ear Triton Towers. Sandy Gross is the man who established Definitive Technology with their bipolar speakers and then went on to form Golden Ear Technology. Now picture this...instead of aluminum dome tweeters which you dislike now they have AMT tweeters hence...Martin Logan with Bipolar array and SuperSub XXL(Triton One.R)! They're unfortunately still in a black sock, but they still look pretty good.
@Professor5180 We'd love to review them. Let them know you'd like to see their products on the channel and maybe it will give them the nudge they need.
Nice to see you giving current electronic music a plug. Producers are releasing some sonically exquisite tracks now that hi-res streaming is widely available.
Man, this video was truly exciting, I loved it. To answer your question, I can wholeheartedly imagine that your comparison of the Def-Tecs to the Ultra High-End speakers out there can be legit. My recent attendance at the Florida Audio Expo has made me a believer that if we are talking solely sound quality and experience, there are much cheaper alternatives to the Ultra High end speakers roaming the earth. I'm not knocking speakers in that Ultra range, most are remarkable in their own way, but I feel that minimal differences, if any at all, are not worthy of the price tag. I'm sure many people will just say I don't have the ear for it, but that is just complete nonsense. My opinion anyway.
Love your reviews, they are the most professional in the space. Shame on any hifi company that isn't sending you products for review, I personally won't buy a product unless I hear what you both think. Keep up the great work.
I could be wrong, but I think most of us want easy setup for pretty much everything. These may be great when dialed in, but I am not interested in investing the time to get there when there are so many amazing options out there without the overhead. Thanks again!
Man, this review brings me back to my beginnings into the home theater hobby with DefTech Super Towers. They really were incredible for home theater applications and I have no doubt these things are top notch as well. I know you only used the two Sony receivers for the review, but I'd be really curious to see how Dirac Live does with bipolar towers with built in subwoofers.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews were the distances insanely large due to the bipolar feature? I have an Anthem AVM70 and my current Def Tech system show speakers in excess of 30ft.
While I still like Def Techs for what they are (had the previous gen model), I always felt they were missing on detail and clarity. When I switched to a pair of MartinLogans, it was a drastic change in what I was hearing. I heard so many things in tracks and movies I had never heard before. They may have made some changes on these, but I don't think it's their strong suit. It's great for people who don't want to spend extra for a sub and want the range, but if you are going to get a sub, I personally prefer and would recommend other offerings. I totally understand what they mean by fun speaker. Especially without a sub. The dynamics is what sticks out, but to me, they have lacked in the other areas. With most of us getting subs, I find the other areas more important. This is not to take away from Def Tech and understand why someone would get them. They are still a great offering for customers. It's all about what you're looking for and what your ears like.
I agree, which is why I commented on the nonsense about these speakers being comparable to the Wilsons. With that said these are an improvement over the previous generation but anything with a sock over it is a compromise. I mean what serious audiophile listens with grille covers on?
@@carlosoliveira-rc2xt that's a bunch of nonsense, ever heard of magnepan ? Probably the best midrange you'll ever hear on any speaker when set up right. Guess what has socks! That sock argument means absolutely nothing in terms of quality sound.
You're comparing apples with oranges depending on what martin Logan you have. Offcourse they are more revealing they are ESL hybrids , also their smaller models.have a planar tweeter (marketed as a ribbon it's not ) Those are more revealing, however for movie most definitely not the ultimate authority. You'll miss out on mid/low end dynamics hands down. I've had a entire magnepan home theater and that was lackluster compared to any cone system I've had so far. They both have pros and cons... But to compare ESL (I assume you have a real ml ESL, and not the small cone gear they have) with cone is always a big gap in terms of clarity, imaging, depth , sound stage size . However they all lack the dynamics on the low end. Dynamics is a big thing in home theater ! Not to mention, martin Logan hardware is prone to failure. Buddy of mine already had to replace two pcbs on his hybrid . He still loves them , but thinking about going to a better brand. It was costly
@@MichelLinschoten Sorry, reality trumps opinion every time. I was listening to Maggies 45 years ago and still think they're just okay, mostly because panel speakers don't image as well as I'd like them to and I think their bass sounds slightly off. Even regarding electrostatics, I have two friends with the same speakers (Soundlab) driven with the same amps but one chose the option without socks and it sounds better that way. Just about every speaker with a sock sounds veiled even with the elevated tweeter levels they use to compensate. It's a consensus amongst audiophiles, for decades already, that grille clothes place a veil over the sound of speakers but hey, I guess tens of thousands of listeners including seasoned reviewers are delusional. Don't trust them? Well it's been measured hundreds of times and I'm not speaking of the diffraction effects of the frames. I've owned hundreds of pairs of speakers including six figure ones and if they come with a sock, I pull them off. I'm not saying they don't sound good, but that they sound better without the sock. You realize the sock is there for cost consideration. It covers up blemishes during manufacturing and what's underneath doesn't have to be finished for aesthetics. So you know from where I'm coming, I've owned reference class gear for almost 45 years, been in acoustics for 29 years and designed and built Home Theaters for almost as long. What's your qualifications? Maggie owner?
@Michel Linschoten I was actually talking about the Motion 60s. They were both priced about the same. I personally think they are better for movies and music for the reasons mentioned. Regardless of whether it's apples or oranges, I'm still picking between both fruit. I have a pair of Puritys as well. You mention prone to fail, my Uncle has had his MLs for 25 years with no issues, and both my def tech amps had issues after about 7 years. I'm not even going to hold that against them as things happen. I'm only bringing this up as you mentioned reliability. Once again, everyone should choose what they like and when I got my Def Techs, I liked, them, but when I switched(note I switched before I had Amp issues) I heard so many things I never heard before with more spaciousness, separation, and clarity. I also argue that the mid/low is better. I find it to be much cleaner. For the other low end, that is rolled off to the subwoofer. Having things set up correctly is another big part of it, but if someone is adding a subwoofer(which they should), having the detail, clarity, separation, and spaciousness is more important. This all comes down to the individual, but I'm just explaining why I also find it way better for movies as well. It's all about you and your ears.
Hi Andrew! Very nice review! Thank you! I wanted to ask why do you still prefer ML F100? Because it's better aesthetically or they sound better even after messing with the EQ and room correction? Also, please pardon my ignorance, would they still be good for music if paired with a HT AVR and not a dedicated stereo amp?
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Red Rum Club, Snotty Nose Rez Kids, Georgia Lines, Lime Garden, Roosevelt, Skratch Bastid, Youth Sector. Went with my buddy (who’s top bucket-list item was to see SXSW), and my top bucket list was Franklin’s BBQ 🤤 Wish it was warmer this week (currently 48F), but I’m Canadian, so it’s cold everywhere I go 😆
I have a 19 x 16 living room with 20 ceilings that opens up to other spaces (kitchen and morning areas). Would these speakers be a good fit? Are the subs enough for that space?
One thing you probably don't enough credit for is how wide your selections of gear are. You really have expanded most folks' audio horizons including mine. If it weren't for this review, I'd know nothing about Def Tech's speakers.
I know you have an older tutorial on REW, but I would love to see how that has evolved for you. How you utilize REW now days and also on the minidsp. Love the video, I was actually just thinking about Def Tech the other day.
Hi Andrew and Kirsty, I really enjoy your content. It's a non-negotiable part of my Sunday and Thursday evenings. The idea of a full range tower with built-in subwoofers is great. How would these Def Techs compare to other similarly full range towers such as GoldenEaes Triton range?
Same initial designer (Sandy Gross) so similar. The GoldenEar product, now owned by Audioquest as I understand it, uses an AMT tweeter, so in this case I think it would be better up top compared to the DefTech here. Midrange might be equal and bass that too could be a bit of a tie. The GoldenEar speakers to my knowledge do not have a rear-firing driver array so placement may also be just a little more flexible with the GoldenEar.
I have the Def Tech Mythos speakers and SuperCube subs and love them. Been using them since 2007. However, I've been hesitant about getting the tower speakers with their built-in powered subwoofers because of the quality issues related to the internal amps going bad. Do you think the new Dymension line has a better amp design that has better reliability and longevity?
I bought the BPs two generations ago. I think they were called the 7000 series. Yes, my amps started to buzz about 6 to seven years after I purchased them. I was unhappy, but I loved the sound of bipolars. So, I went out and purchased the 9060s including the center channel. After I purchased and was waiting for the delivery, I decided to call Def tech to ask if I would have the similar problem with the newer 9000 series. The gentleman on the phone told me they could send me two new amps to replace the amps that went bad. It was just a matter of unscrewing the amps from the speaker and Un connecting them. It was so simple. The cost was like 130.00. He was so nice, he actually sent me the amps of the 7060 and I bought the 7040. An upgraded amps fit perfectly. I put them in, and they sounded perfect once again. Unfortunately, I couldn't cancel the order I had in place for the new 9060s. So, my daughter and son in-law got a great Christmas present that year.
I bought the Def tech Mythos ST's back in 2009 and still have them today If you feed them a good source and amplification they can sound very good indeed! I use tube amp and pre amp I like that they have built in powered subs that makes them a truly full range speakers
It's about time...I've been looking out for some new Def Tecs and man here they are. And you're not crazy...Spending a lot of money on some audio equipment doesn't necessary make it better.
I had the 8060 and then upgraded to the 9060s. Iove how lovely the Def tech sound is. However as I got older I became less ok with their appearance. The black fabric, huge profile and squared edges just became too much for me to tolerate. I finally bit the expense of Revel because aesthetically it worked for me. Bit value wise in my experience Def tech sound was always great.
Love it, keep it up, love to see more positive vibes from you, you look so happy. Like Kristin's comments. Like the idea of eq someone mentioned in the comments
Bipolar speaker design and built in powered subwoofers were two of the gems that the legendary Sandy Gross brought to market starting in the early 90's. My favorite Definitive technology speaker is the Mythos ST-L towers (not bipolar, but powered subs built-in). The Mythos line attempted to fusion Home Theater and two channel into an aesthetically appealing speakers. Sandy Gross co-founder of Polk Audio, founder of Deftech, and later Goldenear was the king of delivering us world class sonics at great price value. That is truly the american way.
The Mythos ST-L towers are still my everyday go to speakers in my main system driven by Anthem STR amp. I've been to the AXPONA Audio show in Chicago and there are ultra-uber-high end systems that blew me away, but I always felt that my humble home system is not embarrassed by them at all. Lastly, most of these show systems are way too large for a normal home space. Happy listening!
Another note - I've seen comments that the Mythos ST-L towers sound even better with a tube amp. I haven't tried it myself but I do agree with the comment because I have another setup in my house with a tube amp and I really love the sound.
I have the DT 8060, and I am still amazed, how these perform. A friend of mine, who has a much expensive system has been driven crazy, the moment he has listened to his favourite track on my system.
Great review, thank you. On the center speaker would you say it has a large or small sweat spot? I have the CS9080 and it seems to have a very narrow dispersion. Would love to upgrade to the new big boy but really want a larger sweet spot. Keep up all the great work.
I’m having fun seeing your reaction to these speakers! How much of what makes these speakers special can still be had for someone who has already heavily invested in subwoofer(s) ideally at least a pair for this comparison. For instance I have a pair of SVS SB 2000 pro subs would the DM40 still evoke the same fun with a proper use of subs? Just curious, love your content.
So happy to see these reviewed on your channel, been a huge fan of deftech for a long time, since the bp2k/3k. Don't have the pocket for these right now, it's worth mentioning the BP9080 is *half off* right now! Awesome, informative review as always 👍
Congrats Andrew and Kristi on another great speaker review. I applaud you on these speaker reviews in the $3K to $5K price range as today that area offers tremendous bang for the buck and is reasonably attainable for the average audiophile. Curious if you've ever approached Aperion Audio to review their Verus III Concert V8T tower speaker. Based on only a few reviews I've read, they appear to offer tremendous performance and build quality far beyond their $4K price. Aperion may be one of those under the radar direct to consumer audio brands that punches well above its price. Thanks.
I had some bp7000 speakers from 2001 and they were great but would never fly in my family house. What setup do you recommend with def tec stereo sound but not so intrusive of a look so my wife won't lose it?
Comparing these to luxurious high-end speakers? 😁😬 Are you... yes, I totally understand! 😌 I was at a hi-fi show (where you cannot get an idea of how speakers truly sound like), but you can get the feeling of what great speakers can give you. If they give you sense and scale of reality and goosebumps... then you have them. 🥳Regardless of price. Thanks for your hard work and always fun-to-watch conversations. ❤
Thanks for the video, I have the older BP 60s and I thought they were pretty great… I do have my close to the wall though probably less than a foot as the room isn’t very big. To me, they sound fine, but I really don’t know much about room placement, or managing the bass levels between them, and the subwoofer. Do you think it’s some point you could do a video about room placement? I wouldn’t even really know where to begin to find out what sounds better.
I’m new to home theatre and I find your channel so helpful and descriptive. You present everything really well and Kristi really adds great content and balance which makes it outstanding! As I’m new, I’m looking to buy everything and it seems expensive and like everyone I would like to achieve the best quality for money spent. One of your videos debated the bookshelf + sub vs floor polk r700 and another. Have you ever considered the Buchardt speaks in a system you’d recommend?
Sorry, no I can't advocate for that brand. Thank you so much for watching! You don't have to spend a fortune to get good sound. Check out our budget playlist and I think you'll find some options to consider.
So, is running your front sound stage in full range, and using a sub only for LFE purposes a better option? Normally, when you choose to crossover, the sub plays double duty. It plays below the crossover, and it also plays the LFE info.
I was glad to hear you did a review the Def tech newest speaker. I have had 8000 series for years and wanted the 9000 when they went on sale. I missed the sales. Only thing I didn't like about my def techs was that sock. I did a upgraded and gave my son my old Def tech 8040 bp's. and went with the KEF 750's which is the right size for my man cave. Although I like your review it came two months late. Not your fault no else had them in their store or was waiting on Def tech to send them. Great review.
I have both speakers you mention! I 100% agree with Andrew and Kristi - the Def Tech speakers, once you get them placed correctly, are some of the most fun speakers I've ever listened to. I have the Triton Reference speakers now - they're more precise in their soundstage and imaging than the def techs, but "more clinical" and accurate. Everything musically on the Def Techs sounds great - but with the Triton's, you start to hear artists so clearly, that they don't quite sound as good as you remember them to be. Both are great speakers, both require a lot of toying around with positioning, both don't require a lot of power to make them sound great, or play VERY loud. And, II really do believe you can compare those two brands to just about anything else out there, and come away as impressed with either brand over speakers costing far, far more.
Great review as always! Flashbacks to the time I had the Definitive Technology Mythos STS.. Still think I will be going for Klipsch rp-8000f ii for the theater Im building atm.
Hey Andrew, Just wanted to know if you connected them using the speaker wire and then set to full range? Or did you use the separate LFE input? Great video as always :)
Thanks for the comparisons in detail, this is what i want. I've always wondered about the McIntosh XR100. The few reviews rave about them but they get little attention
Great review waiting on a review of def tech i have the bp 9060 and best sounding speakers i have heard!.. have there cs9060 also and again best center channel i have heard!... Big time bass and large soundstage! Go Kristi i heard her comment on the speaker which she referred to as if it looked like a atm machine!.lmao! Cool! Thanks for the great review! Keep up the humor, nice!

Andrew (unrelated to these speakers) you should do a Room EQ tutorial. Who here would like to see that? ❤
Noted.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews thanks 🙏🏼 for considering this.

Thanks! So glad you enjoyed this review.
I'm stoked that you actually reviewed some def tech stuff. I just bought all of their floor speakers and center channels while they were on sale
Those different fabric options you put up there…WOW! I wish some of these companies would call you and Kristi before releasing products. What an amazing idea
I know right 😂. My offer to DefTech stands, let's do a special edition.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Def tech called,You kind Sir are HIRED* $$$$$
This was such a fun and great review to listen to. Still kicking the BP7001 fronts and BP7002 rears ....20 plus years later. This video is making me consider the new Deftech Center channel.
Haha, me too on that center channel!
Omg the colors, you guys would probably can create the most beautiful looking speaker ever if you had the chance to do so
You know it!
Really enjoyed this video - ATM! Now that was pure gold 😂

I also bought a pair of BP 10's, and still have them. I use them for my rear surrounds now. Still going strong.
Thank you for watching and sharing your personal experience.
Thank you! I thoroughly enjoyed this review. You conveyed your emotions in an intoxicating way. Now it’s time for Goldenear Tritons, don’t you think?
These speakers are incredible. I bought the dm 30 center and the dm60’s and they are mind blowing fun. Great review Andrew and Kristy!

Good video, and I loved the renderings of the Def Techs in the different colors! That was very cool! I hope someone from the company sees this!
I hope so too!
Yaaaaaaay Def Techs.
I am so elated that you two fell in love with their beleivable soundstage as have I.
My units are the pre-historic originals: (BP10S X 4 & BP8S X 2 & CLR2002):
BP10s had the 6.5 in woofs & BP8s and CLR2002 both had the smaller 5.75 in woofs
I wonder how the performance has been improved since 1990, short of the obvious added powered-subwoofer per tower?
I bought their SuperCube2 (8in x 3) subwoofer at that period... and it hits solid 20bB in my room.
You are RIGHT about DefTech towers being finicky BUT they are a tweekers wet dream. Mine are optimal at 20in away from the back walls and 3 to 4 ft from the left or right walls. Their sound is infinitely augmented with the equally tweekable Yama A2080 AVR. I tweek them all at least once a month like a NUT. 😊😂
Q: IS THERE ANYTHING ABOUT THESE NEW 5.25IN WOOF TOWERS THAT BEGS UPGRADING (outside built-in subs addition)?
God Bless and keep you BOTH ❤🎉🙏
Also used 9060s in a typical living room, and they definitely took up space, but for how the room worked (rental, so wasn't doing anything to the room) but they ROCKED and still felt good spatially and sounded amazing. Add not needing separate subs or atmos speakers that look awful, it's a great space budget
Such a fun review and conversation. I desperately want to hear these.
Congrats on your Longhorns, Kristi!
I'm so excited for them!! I'm even more excited for the Coach Terry after inheriting such a messed up situation and having to continue to be called "interim" head coach. Sometimes, the Texas athletics dept act like complete fools. :)

So far how do you like the rel subs I been looking at there lines for future upgrade
(distortion was giving me headaches)
Click on the red dragon twice and hit the Adele two channel sound test video to view where they actually sounded their best.
Almost brought a pr some years ago to replace my Forte lls but did like the high end in the Def Techs also did want to fool with
Keeping the cover on them clean.
My cat thinks my Def Tech towers are THE BEST scratching post.
What a fun review. I think I need to demo these in store to get the plum tingles haha
God I would love to see Wilson audio actually send you a set to review. I’m not saying they won’t be good but for money like that they better excel at every aspect.
Thank you for the review i can’t wait for these to hit our shores here in Oz
no comments on the speaker (love the idea), but that conversation at the end though! Love you guys!
Appreciate you watching!
The barrier to high-end sound is dropping FAST!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews AMEN BROTHER 🤗
Great review. I owned the Def Tech BP30s for many years and had similar thoughts. I loved the lively and enveloping sound initially, but as time went on I found the treble to be too grating and even ended up putting foam panels behind the speakers to tame the reflective sound from the rear facing speakers.
I feel like they need to improve their tweeters before I consider going back. You should need room correction for 2 channel music
I have the bp20s I bought in 93 and Still have them!! Still beats some of the best towers out today!!!! I have the bp2000s to
@@brooklynknightss also, as to why Def Tech does not go with something like a ring radiator is a mystery.
Is that 3feet to the rear or front of the speaker?
I would love for you to review the Golden Ear Triton R.
I approve this message.
I second!
If you like the fabric look you could DIY any speaker to have any color fabric and texture you'd like
Love your reviews, they are the most professional in the space.
Definitely going to buy this big boys.
That I unfortunately did not test using our RZ50. I can say that Anthem's ARC Genesis did well.
Offcourse they are more revealing they are ESL hybrids , also their smaller models.have a planar tweeter (marketed as a ribbon it's not )
Those are more revealing, however for movie most definitely not the ultimate authority.
Good morning from Austin. Just barely survived SXSW. Headed back to Ottawa tomorrow 🇨🇦 all the best, Andrew and Kristi!
See anything good while at SXSW? Safe travels. Thanks for tuning in!

Went with my buddy (who’s top bucket-list item was to see SXSW), and my top bucket list was Franklin’s BBQ 🤤 Wish it was warmer this week (currently 48F), but I’m Canadian, so it’s cold everywhere I go 😆
I can feel it - down in my plums. Looool well done Mr. Robinson.
Someone caught the reference!
Is that spelled plums or plumbs??

I'd be happy if Polk had made the grilles on the Reference series actually black instead of that faded out t-shirt grey.
Great review! And, no, you're not crazy. 😉
Love it, keep it up, love to see more positive vibes from you, you look so happy. Like Kristin's comments. Like the idea of eq someone mentioned in the comments
I have a total man crush on your voice, I'm listening to audio reviews just to hear the silky smoothness. Nothing weird here, carry on.
I've got a theater full of stl's in my airbnb after my interlude 60s went the way of the old. People love the look, and the sound is to die for
Which speakers were these that Sandy introduced in the early '90s?
Is Sandy still alive or just stepped down from the company?
I have the DT 8060, and I am still amazed, how these perform. A friend of mine, who has a much expensive system has been driven crazy, the moment he has listened to his favourite track on my system.
Great review, thank you. On the center speaker would you say it has a large or small sweat spot? I have the CS9080 and it seems to have a very narrow dispersion. Would love to upgrade to the new big boy but really want a larger sweet spot. Keep up all the great work.
I’m thinking to buy bryston t model t speaker What do you think about the Speakers?
Wow another great honest and enjoyable review. Thanks
“ATM machine” comment from Kristy was spot on, I was LMFAO 😂
Brings back memories of the BP10s and STS Mythos towers that I bought 15-20 years ago......no longer use them but them certainly did make an impact!
Just thought I'd say you guys have excellent music taste.
So happy to see these reviewed on your channel, been a huge fan of deftech for a long time, since the bp2k/3k. Don't have the pocket for these right now, it's worth mentioning the BP9080 is *half off* right now! Awesome, informative review as always 👍
Where on the 9080? Everywhere I see is out of stock. BTW, love my 9060's.
Love the look of em. I like it
Congrats Andrew and Kristi on another great speaker review.
Hi Andrew. Are these speakers have surround and Atmos companions? for an immersive home theater experience. Thanks
Please check out the description beneath the video. You'll find notes on the entire line.
Good morning friends! These look quite fun.
Morning! Thanks for tuning in. We had a lot of fun making this video.
“Is this one of those speakers that looks like an ATM machine” 🏧🤣🤣
So good 💯
I’m new to home theatre and I find your channel so helpful and descriptive.
Still running my 8080s......I may upgrade to these in the next year. I was debating going with Triton until these were announced.
Pretty sure they got rid of the lfe connection in these new ones.
Thanks for the comparisons in detail, this is what i want. I've always wondered about the McIntosh XR100. The few reviews rave about them but they get little attention
Please advice the speaker cable gauge used for your testing
This video appeared as the #2 video listed in my search for a review on their DM30 center channel speaker.
