It came out in 1992. I really enjoy your reactions. I completely understand that you had limited access to this music for a while & then were big into hip-hop. I love that you are taking this journey into the "greatest music ever produced" (yes, I know that is very subjective.) I love watching your face because your face tells the true feelings you are experiencing. And just from one old 54yo guy that has suffered depression for over 45 years due to some unresolved-until-recently abuse I went through as a child, crying is a great outlet to release emotions. Because if you hold emotions in for too long, they will come out in far worse ways than crying. I have been a very emotional guy my whole life but suddenly in 2015, I stopped crying & just became indifferent. Then, on July 12, 2017, everything inside me exploded when someone said something that triggered me. I spent 3 years incarcerated because of it. I know this is a long post & I apologize for that. But if by submitting this comment I can help one person, it was worth it. I try to use all the negative in my life now to help others. God Bless!
I suffered from abuse, .too. I got counseling. In that counseling we did something called EMDR therapy. It's a huge game changer. The nightmares, triggers go away. Building self confidence. Be able to function like "normal " people. Abuse is not asked for. It's not for you to feel guilty. Emdr helps change that. Gift yourself with a outlook.
Thanks for sharing this. It's more acceptable these days to open up about mental health. I have suffered for 30 years. In the beginning you just had the usual pull yourself together comments. Fortunately today people are more understanding. Wishing you well ❤
Not being able to feel is the worst “feeling” in the world. Glad you got help. For me, music is my barometer. If a song like this doesn’t give me chills, it’s time to get some help and sort out my life. Be well.
Thank you for your comment! I’ve suffered from Anxiety and Depression since I was a teenager! This song is beautiful and painful all at the same time! Peace and Blessings to you and yours!
The singer Michael Stipe has dealt with depression and suicidal thoughts throughout his life, I think to a large extent he wrote this song to himself as much as to other people. Michael Stipe also has autism, and I'm sure that has contributed to his feelings of alienation.
My friend played this for me when I told her I wanted to end my life after having my leg removed. I was an athlete , part of the triple A training program in England, I had to learn everything over again, having to be dependent on people for everything. Right now, I'm learning just to walk with my prosthetic leg. Who knows, maybe down the line I can train for the ParaOlypics
I don't like crying in public, and I'm a female. I also rarely cry by myself. Now and then, I will have a good all out snotty sobbing session, and I must admit, I always feel so much better after. I have bipolar, which sucks to deal with....but deal with it I do, so this song has always resonated with me.
@@Mary-xo7ueI was in a traffic jam when this came on the radio. I started crying and have no idea how I got to my destination through the sobs. First thing I did was call a therapist. That was 30 years ago. You can get through this. Hold on.

Michael Stipe is an incredible vocalist. His voice is very iconic and unmistakable. REM was huge in their hey day. Their entire catalog is full of reaction worthy material. Also, still completely relevant 32 years later. Great art always stands the test of time.

At 21/22 years old a friend of mine's father scored a couple front row tickets to REM's concert in Vancouver in the early 90's... so we planned a guy's road trip to drive near 20 hours there to see them. When my workplace changed my schedule, I quit my job to go. I do not regret that decision.

Kings of college/alt rock. That’s what REM is. I remember going up to Athens, GA and seeing them and the B-52’s back before they were somebody. The music scene in Athens was a hotbed of ALT rock
This song is a universal empathy test. If you can listen to this , watch the video, and NOT be touched... you have no soul. I don't care who you are, how old you are, where you came from, what you been thru... this gets to the heart of what it is to be human. And being a human at times is HARD.
It is more than Ok to cry, it helps to release and process better what you are facing, that especially goes for men who stuff way too much down. You are a man not a robot, so please do us all a favor and feel your pain or joy (tears can be from both). Thanks Black Pegasus, this is a very intense tune, I remember it well.
My only celebrity contact was a run in with Michael Stipe. Literally. I was going for a run along the sea wall in Vancouver and a man on his cell phone stepped out in front of me without seeing me. Being a typical Canadian I stumbled out of his way but I apologized to him, and as we made eye contact, my eyes probably bugged out of my head. It was Stipe! He kinda just nodded his head in acknowledgement of our almost accident. And I kept running.
The song came out in 1992. I remember because it was the year that I finally got out of the drug and partying scene and also met my husband and a couple years later we had our beautiful son together. Quite a pivotal year for me.
Man this really hit me in the feels. I've had so many deaths in my family in the last few years, but the one that hurt the most was when my brother took his life. Depression is a bitch. I live with it. Now my husband (the love of my life) of 48 years is dying and is now on Hospice. My world is crumbling. I feel so alone.
Bill Berry (drummer of REM) wrote 'Everybody Hurts' as an anti-suicide song. He wanted to write a song that would reach out to people who felt they had no hope. Ironically, two years later, Kurt Cobain of Nirvana (good friend of Michael Stipe, lead singer of REM) shot himself on this day (April 5th) in 1994. This video was filmed in San Antonio, TX. At the end, everyone walked away from the stagnant traffic jam.. life can feel the same.
Ever since I got off meds I cry all the time and decided it's like a nap. I don't even judge it or have to have a reason. It's part of a normal healing/grieving process.
I love that godspell song! "This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine." I love what your take on this song is. I lost my pet on Thursday. My 13 year old baby girl kitty cat. We had the vet come out & humanely euthanized her. She died on my lap surrounded by her family, who love her. ❤
I'm so very sorry about your sweet furbaby. Even 13 years is not enough. I'll be holding you in my heart while you grieve. Please take care of yourself. ❤❤Much Love ❤❤😢
My condolences to you and yours. As a cat family house, we know what it is like when we have to make the decision for our fur babies. We know we need to stop their suffering, and it hurts like nothing else. We have our furbabies cremated so we never leave them behind. They are part of the family and take part of us when they leave.
My teenage self is loving this. R.E.M. (stands for Rapid Eye Movement) was one of my go to bands. Everybody hurts saved me after I slipped into a dark space after enduring a very traumatic event in my late teens. This song has saved lives. And I'm so glad you found it.
When this came out, cell phones hadn't changed everything, people still had pagers and had to find phone booths to call if they broke down. The universal thing was to lift the hood and get back in the car, people would stop, I did many times. Today people are less connected in spite of more communication capabilities, phones and online are more about marketing and ads than interpersonal contact.
Weird story. When I was 19 (I'm 42 now 40 year old FUQBOYZ!) I was an apprentice Chef and at a train station after midnight, it had been a bad night at work, and my girl was mad because I worked so much. I was on a subway station, just generally unhappy and a middle aged woman sat beside me offering me a joint, I smoked it and she just said, "Hard day hon'?" I said "yeah..." Then this fucking song come on and I sat there smoking and passing the joint back and forth. Then she just patted me knee and left. Bizzarre but I remember it clearly.
Yeah everyone does cry but always remember, the deeper sorrow carves into your soul, the more joy it can contain! That trying to stay strong bull shit is incredibly damaging and dangerous. Sometimes it IS too hard and all you can do is hang on till it gets better. Remember it ALWAYS does eventually.
I love REM. This song means so much to me as when this song came out was the time when my brother had just been murdered. This song kept me going. Also love the songs; King of Comedy What's Your frequency Kenneth, and, Losing My Religion. ❤❤
Such a slow methodical melody, beautiful, so much REM is awesome, a great live with Bruce Springsteen, Shiny Happy People was my fave song back in my clubbing days lol, thanks BP 🙏🦉❤️🐊👍
When that organ hits, that gets me every time. When he sings "You are not alone" at the end, all that sadness turns to hope. Beautiful song that saved so many lives.
I think what made this song so popular is all the things you talked about. Everyone has a similar situation in their lives they relate to. Awesome some. I was going to prison for 10 years and had to tell my five yr old son whom I spent everyday of his life with. Wow now I’m tearing up ❤❤❤❤
R.E.M. is one of those bands that I never go looking for, but I'm always glad when I run across them. They manage to have a very recognizable sound while not being super flashy.
Dude, this song prevented me from doing the deed. I've been suffering with PTSD and a bipolar disorder for a long time. Before I had proper care I was a mess and honestly thought that I was a burden to everyone who loved me. Life at that time was in my eyes not worth it. A friend made me listen to that song and made me realized that I was worth it and lot of people would be devastated if I went through with my plan. That was 26 years ago and today I work in a hospital taking care of people and my life is great. So yeah, R.E.M. help me and you are so right when you say that people need to hear that song. You all need to know this: YOU ARE NOT ALONE! Please reach out, life's worth it. 🙏❤👍
Society has made boys and men feel they are weak or less manly if they show emotions and cry. Everyone has tear ducts for a reason...everyone has pain and angst in their lives....We can cry from pain, but also from joy. It is good sometimes to let tears roll , and to feel the emotions and to reach for help when in physical or mental pain. Never feel bad to let your feelings show....holding all that pain inside causes all kinds of health problems.
REM was an indie group for years until they got their commercial break. Both their indie and commercial stuff is great! For indie, I would recommend the followings songs that I don't think you've heard before (based on what you said at the end of the "Everybody Hurts" reaction): "Gardening at Night", "Orange Crush", (Don't Go Back to) Rockville", "Radio Free Europe", "Fall On Me. And from their commercial hits, I would recommend "Man on the Moon", "What's the Frequency Kenneth" and "Shiny Happy People". Of course, the default REM song for most people is "Losing My Religion", but I think you may have heard it. If not, you should. Hope this helps! 🙂
R.E.M. was my first concert back in 1995 and they're still in my top five. This song is really good, but they were constantly changing, so they have a little something for everyone. The message is really important, of course. If you want to continue on the theme, you might want to revisit Aurora. She's really big into normalizing emotional expression and wrote The River after she found out that 75% of suicides were men. If you just want something to cry to, try Murder Song (live at the Nobel Peace Prize concert).
Hey, BP, real men cry. I get it, I don't wanna cry ever, and I've been known to hold back, to bottle it up, to hold on too tight onto my emotions, so that no one will see me as being weak, as being a sissy, etc... I just lost 2 people very near and dear to me, and I tried to be the guy that lifted everyone else up, and I did lift everyone up... but when I went back on the road (I'm a trucker) alone... I couldn't hold it back anymore. JOHN 11:35 is the shortest verse in the Holy Bible. Just 2 words... Jesus wept.
the singer wrote this song because he kept seeing youth suicide rate go up and up and up day after day... so he wrote this song to just let people know to hang on
yeah man!...REM was the stuff back in the day. Mid-to-late 80's is when I jumped aboard, thus the older school stuff. Albums like "Life's Rich Pageant" and "Murmur" are classics, with awesome tracks like "Fall On Me" and "Talk About the Passion" being incredible, but other older tunes like "Driver 8", "So. Central Rain", "Pretty Persuasion", and "Radio Free Europe" are all legendary classics from the era that I'd highly recommend!....just old school college radio at it's finest.
I’ve been watching you all morning pulled in by Sinead O’Connor. Lots of the songs you are showing I know. But now know differently. I have always felt that music is Gods way of pulling pain, joy, whatever out through my tears so that I can make the room I need to follow a plan he knows would be too painful. Crying with music has opened me up to be lighter, less afraid to take the next step and have the room in me I need. To all you creatives, music writers, whatever your gift thank you. So glad I found you today. Best of luck with life, family, career, whatever you want. You touched my heart today….how many people get to say that.

"People need this song." It's so true. This isn't a song about depression. It's a song about dealing with depression. WE ARE ALL HUMAN. And this song touches on every part of humanity.

See what you did, You made me cry. and I don't cry easy. Such a beautiful song.
The Living Years by Mike + The Mechanics is along the same lines.
Listen to the live version from their concert n Glastonbury 2003. Haunting!
Another heavy heavy song is The Living Years by Mike and Mechanics
It is always ok to cry, it is ok for men to cry too. crying is NOT a sign of weakness, it is a sign of courage. x
Everybody hurts, but nobody cares.
I appreciate your saying that. My mum used to say the same thing to me if I was holding my sadness in.
An Irish Catholic priest sang this on Britain's Got Talent competition. He added an additional line "you're not alone" at the end
Art is so important
My only celebrity contact was a run in with Michael Stipe. Literally. I was going for a run along the sea wall in Vancouver and a man on his cell phone stepped out in front of me without seeing me. Being a typical Canadian I stumbled out of his way but I apologized to him, and as we made eye contact, my eyes probably bugged out of my head. It was Stipe! He kinda just nodded his head in acknowledgement of our almost accident. And I kept running.
I love this song. I was in the hospital in 1993
I was 16 and just a few months from 17. My roommate played MTV 24/ 7 so I heard this song a lot
Sending you love
Take good care of yourself. God loves you, always.
@@debbiecook8777, thank you. Means alot to me.
@@JaneDoe-lq3du, thanks for your kind words.
Sending you powerful love and light. You are not alone, HOLD ON ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
This was on repeat for me in 1994….. still one of my favorite songs ever
I'm not sure how much you noticed but, I love how they display the thoughts that people are having when they zoom in on the individual cars.💖🥺🙏💖
❤ She knew how much you loved her.
I'm sorry for your loss take care hugs shadow😢
I'm sorry for your loss. 💔🌹
REM is one of my top 5 bands of all time. ❤ Michael Stipes can write, perform, and sing
R.E.M. - the band said at a concert that it stands for “Remember Every Moment”.
Great song, thanks for sharing
My teenage self is loving this. R.E.M. (stands for Rapid Eye Movement) was one of my go to bands. Everybody hurts saved me after I slipped into a dark space after enduring a very traumatic event in my late teens. This song has saved lives. And I'm so glad you found it.
This song helped me with the darkness a couple of years ago.
I also listen to Drive very loud to brighten me up.
This reaction made me to listen 'Phil Collins - Everyday' after many many years of last time I've heard that song...
This song has saved many lives. It’s a beautiful message for all time. For all who struggle, please, reach out; you are loved ❤
LOVED YOUR REACTION SIR , THANK YOU !
October 6th 1992 , I had just finished school. Shiny, happy people was my beach song, lots of great tunes and wonderful memories 🥰
I'm sorry for your loss hugs shadow😢
So sorry about your dear brother. Dang. 😢
Very sorry about your brother. I empathize. My brother was killed by a drunk driver. His spirit is now with me.
REM have loads of great songs - would really enjoy some more reactions to them 💜
This is without a doubt one of the greatest song ever written!!!!!!!
This song brings me to tears every time. Your reaction is heartfelt. Thank you.
It stands for rapid eye movement.
Such a slow methodical melody, beautiful, so much REM is awesome, a great live with Bruce Springsteen, Shiny Happy People was my fave song back in my clubbing days lol, thanks BP 🙏🦉❤️🐊👍
Crying makes us vulnerable and that causes discomfort. Once you accept that bit, it can feel empowering to let go
Automatic for the People was on repeat for months when I was a teenager. Around my 18th Birthday actually.
Wow now I’m tearing up ❤❤❤❤
This is one of my favorite reactions ❤
R.E.M. is one of those bands that I never go looking for, but I'm always glad when I run across them. They manage to have a very recognizable sound while not being super flashy.
Loved R. E. M. back in the day. (Not rem as a word but individual letters). Now I’m going to have to go pull my cd out and listen to them after work.
🙏❤👍
Every time I hear this song, I turn it up and cry 😢 Gives me chills every time.
Michael Stipes voice goes right to your soul, love this
Society has made boys and men feel they are weak or less manly if they show emotions and cry.
Michael Stype - wonderful voice - beautiful song - one of a whole lot of REM's
"Drive" is hypnotic. It's also by REM
I’m so glad that you get it. We raise our boys not to cry when it’s the most natural thing to do when you hurt
Moron.
R.E.M. was my first concert back in 1995 and they're still in my top five.
Jesus wept.
OMG - Michael Stipe's voice is incredible. Such emotion and vulnerability. REM rules.
I love Michael Stipe so much. To care enough to sing this song exactly this way. He's a beautiful human. ❤
the singer wrote this song because he kept seeing youth suicide rate go up and up and up day after day... so he wrote this song to just let people know to hang on
Everyone needs to know that everybody hurts sometimes. Great voice, great video. Thanks for your kind words.
yeah man!...REM was the stuff back in the day.
You touched my heart today….how many people get to say that.
the guys in black i think were angels the whole time. their expressions were of sorrow but love. i love the rapture ending too
What a beautiful reaction to an extremely powerful song and video, thank you
Hey! I`m 57 years old Truckdriver from Germany and drive all trough Europe! If I was young, I was very nervous and agressive in a trafficjam! I was barking like a dog! Today I`m smiling and make jokes with other people if they want! Kids like this very much! You can`t change every thing in this moment so do the Best of it!
They were told to make a "happy song" so that's where Shiny Happy People came from. One of the B 52s sings with him, I can't remember her name but she has a great voice
Also the song Stand is a happy song!
Everybody hurts makes me cry!
"People need this song." It's so true. This isn't a song about depression. It's a song about dealing with depression. WE ARE ALL HUMAN. And this song touches on every part of humanity.
Exactly
@@philodowd8080 thank you for understanding where my reaction of this comes from
My Dad loved this song🥲💪🏼
I so appreciate you let your truth out. Everybody needs to cry sometimes. Everybody deserves that love as they’re going through the pain. 😅
I was a queer kid growing up in a fundamentalist cult in the 80s/90s, and this song also saved my life. It was like a warm blanket of understanding when I thought no one would. Thanks for your reaction!
This reaction solidifies my decision to be a member of your channel. I needed this song today so bad. Thank you
rapid eye movement
R.E.M., named for a dream-state condition (rapid eye movement), formed in 1980 in Athens, Georgia, a university town about 65 miles (105 km) northeast of Atlanta that was already internationally noted for its local pop scene by the time R.E.M. released Chronic Town, its 1982 debut extended-play recording.
Thanks, Black Peg! This is a brilliant and moving song.. and VIDEO.. one of my favorites by REM... gotta check our those SUBTITLES.. that are not necessarily the lyrics... love your reaction!
