    Just had to put my Great Dane down a few weeks ago, but he gave my family and me 10 years of pure joy. I can tell you stories about him, but then I'll start crying. he did love going to the dog park and when he was younger between 2 to 5 he could run like a greyhound. He was a brindle, but he was the best. he weighed 179 lbs.

      My heartfelt condolences. I know how you feel. I had to put mine ( both females ) down 3 months apart from each other 2 years ago. I miss them so much. Then on Mother’s Day that same year, my son had to put his dog down. They are my life. And greatly missed as I had them almost 12 years.

    My Alex lived to be 13. She weighed 193 lbs when she passed. We had to buy a bigger bed so she could sleep with us. When my wife would go to sleep, if it was cool, Alex would watch her, make sure she was sleeping, and then steal her blanket and cover herself up.

    My husband and I adopted a Great Dane 2 years ago, we called him Mamaduke, he was tied up out the back of someone’s house on a golf course because he was annoying, the idiot owner handed over he’s pedigree papers too saying he wanted nothing to do with him, he will be 3 in March, he is our beautiful boy... he is amazingly gentle considering his start to life... we’re the winners here..💪🏼

    Great Danes are the best! We rescued our first Dane in 2015 and she was a beautiful Harlequin female named Paris. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma and we had to end her suffering in February of 2020. Our friends who also have Danes, alerted us to a 5 month old Female Puppy who we just adopted 2 weeks ago. It was so hard to say goodbye to our Paris but when we heard another Dane needed a home we jumped at the opportunity. Now we have Florence (2020 year of the nurse... appropriate name all things considered) and her temperament is awesome and now she has a family that loves her and can give her all the attention, food, love, and play she needs.
    Breaks my heart to see how many people get Danes with no clue how much responsibility it is to take care of this breed. The only downside is they don't last as long as other breeds but man the time spent with them is second to none!

    Danes are great companion dogs; I am disabled and my dane knows she can't "stand up" on me but will "stand up" on others especially my husband and daughter in law. She is very loving towards me and worries about me if I'm not getting around very well on different days. She will go off and play but only for a few minutes before she comes back to check on me, at which time she always loves on me. When I use my nebulizer she always come and gives me a little kiss on the cheek like she knows. I would love to have her trained as a service animal but that would limit her interaction with other people which she thoroughly enjoys. Her favorite thing is to go camping (or anywhere bye bye lol). When we watch tv in the evenings she lays on the opposite end of the couch and has to have a paw touching me somewhere. She is the greatest and best dog we've ever owned and the most well behaved. Danes are very smart and learn quickly. I'm so glad my husband talked me into getting one now.

    He was an excellent family dog so very gentle with babies giving them an abundance of space. But if you were a mountain lion in the yard or someone he didn't know, lord help you. He was my shadow and friend.

    I can see the effects of his wobblers in the way he moves. If his mobility gets compromised enough he might benefit from a cart. You can see the one I built for my Great Dane on my channel. They are truly wonderful companion dogs that need a lot of attention and anyone considering this breed needs to understand they are indoor dogs. You don't need a big yard. They want to be with you all the time.

    I have had two Great Danes. Danes believe they are part of the family, and their role is to protect members of the family particularly the children. And they will protect any child that they believe is being threatened. Raise a hand to strike a child and your arm would be in my dog' s mouth! If the dog does not approve of you do not even try to get near the wife. Danes are normally very placid but you do not want to see an angry one, only saw my dog angry perhaps twice in his entire life. Always bought cars that the dog get into, he loved the Land Rover but didn't think much of the Range Rover. He did like the MG midget, head hanging over one side and tail over the other side. They are very good at stealing food as well, lost many a sandwich to mine.Good with kids? My daughter teethed on his claws. They do like to sit on furniture, my dog had his own settee. A Dane is not just a dog, it is another member of the family.

      My first Great Dane loved to riding in my Volkswagen Camper; she helped pick out my husband for me &enriched the many trips my husband & I took in our younger days. Our second was a much bigger male which we got for free on our way back from our honeymoon. They do break you hearts in the end but my 15 yr old hound dog mix will too! I loved & kept every dog rescued until they ‘left me’...but Great Danes have a special place in my 71 yr old heart…

Back then I thought he was trying to kill me, now looking back I know he was trying to befriend me but didn't know how. He was only a pup but way taller then me.He was a beautiful dog when I think back. Solid gray shiny coat. I'd give anything if I could return to those days and not be afraid of him.

    I love them, i will only have a great dane anymore. They are wonderful babies. Easy to train and house train. Great for kids. We always feed then good food with no crap in it. I had 3 and they past away at 10 years and a few months old. I just wish people would not sale them for so much. They are wonderful. I have learned that they need to be fed so much a day to be healthy. So to me if the food is right and treats are good for them. It is not more costly then other big dog. We have also done home made chicken or turkey and rice with sweet potatoes and broccoli. with treats made up of yogurt , peanut butter and banana. That gives them even more vitamins they need for joint and health as well as skin and coat. None of those by products. I have a great vet and if i could i would get another. I think it is sad that people want over a $1000. for these wonderful babies. The rescues wanted to be all up in you business and see more then i feel comfortable with. i have had great danes for 16 years and if showing the record of this is not enough for someone to know i take care of them until they are old. then i guess i will not get one. after our last baby died, we got a dane shepard mix. But it not the same but we love him . He is 8 months old now and only 26 inches at shoulder. But he has learn a lot of tricks and commands. would love to rescue another one if i could.

    • @singinrj
      @singinrj 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      my husband bought my dane for me in Feb 2019 and she turned 1 in June and so far we've only got a couple thousand in her between food, toys, leashes, collars, etc... we have had to take her to the vet twice which cost around $400 between the 2 visits but she is worth it. She only goes through a 33 lb bag of dog food a month so far but she's only around 100 lbs right now. The people we got her from had her on a very low protein diet when we got her which our vet told us to change in order to strengthen her bones. She was so thin you could see the outline of her rib cage and her tummy was so shrunken in she looked abused. We do get her a new toy about every 2 weeks because she tears them up but we've discovered the kong toys hold up very nicely and last longer. Of course they're a little more expensive but worth the money. One risk with danes is they can get "bloat" where their stomachs can literally twist but this can be surgically prevented if you have a female and have her spayed. She does have a bad habit of "eating" her blankets if she gets bored but I didn't include that in the total. Her food total will go up starting this month as her food allotment per meal goes up now that she is 100 lbs to 2½ cups per feeding twice a day. We also give her peanut butter biscuits (dog cookies) which is around $10 a month on top of her dog food. We feed her diamond large breed chicken dog food which is low grain but not grain free. We do keep her away from corn in her dog food as it causes her stools to be rather runny. She does get peanut butter put in her bone at night before she goes to bed which our vet suggested; this acutally helped her to over come her separation anxiety she had so terribly when we first got her. I couldn't even go to the restroom without her being right there with me or she'd cry like someone killed her and she would tear down anything that stood in her way of getting to me. Now she is fine for me to put her in her cage and leave for a few hours as long as I give her the peanut butter bone or a biscuit. She just lays down and goes to sleep. Danes are excellent dogs/pets/family members but are a big responsebility and do require a lot of time with their humans, so if you don't have ample time to spend with one I don't recommend you getting one. And they do have a short lifespan but I know of some that lived 17 yrs too. Our vet told us around 6-8 yrs and usually on the shorter side of that. He also told us they are subject to getting cancer so please if you get one make sure you take it to your vet regularly.

    • @pansyflower9697
      @pansyflower9697 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Eventually you might have to put him down for paralysis... But usually it will be something else that ends their life... Something like bloat.

    • @Cerus98
      @Cerus98 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pansy Flower - Bloat is easily prevented with a proper, high quality diet at the correct ratios. So is wobblers. This dog is suffering because it was fed a crappy diet that pushed his growth too fast.
      Surgery can usually correct it and keep it from progressing.

    • @marcmo7138
      @marcmo7138 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Torsion or bloat is usually the owners fault not the Dane. You can have the stomach tacked so it wont flip.

    • @Cerus98
      @Cerus98 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      marc mo - That’s not entirely accurate. There is a genetic component to bloat. Some dogs are easily prone to it no matter what you do while others will never bloat even when you ignore all the known triggers.
      Technically it’s up to the owners to take precautions and assume their dog is capable of it but it’s not really anyone’s fault.

    My fiances dad has had 4 pure breed Danes with certificates and they have all died horrible deaths, one from bone cancer, one from the stomach turning or something. I just cant understand the continued breed of a dog that suffers so greatly from its genetics. I hold the same sentiment for boxers, pugs and other dogs that are basically killed because of bad breeding

    • @genesiskravitz8621
      @genesiskravitz8621 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A.h.k yes it’s very sad :( Great Danes have very short lifespans for poor genetic reasons that you have listed. People are more interested in the novelty than anything else.

    • @Cerus98
      @Cerus98 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That’s because certificates don’t mean shit. Even puppy mills sell AKC registered dogs. Papers don’t mean well bred. Any litter can be registered regardless of its quality.
      Bone cancer is a result of over-vaccination and poor diet. Bloat is caused by poor diet, improper feeding routine (allowing them to gorge on water/food before or after play) and can be prevented with a simple gastropexy surgery.
      Are they prone to certain genetic issues? Yes. That’s why you should only buy from an ethical and responsible breeder who health tests their dogs. This applies to any breed of dog. No breed club recommended health testing means no sale.

    • @janedobiesix6588
      @janedobiesix6588 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well you'll be happy to hear then that modern breeding has been working aggressively to fix these issues. The life expectancy has gone from 5-6 years to 10+ and it's not unusual anymore to see +12yr Danes anymore. Also there's a whole lot more knowledge now about bloat and preventative gastropexies are normal to prevent gastric torsion (the stomach turning thing). With a reputable breeder and properly raising them they can live pretty normal lives now.

    Give Bruno a raw diet and his wobblers will get better. I have a dane too that was paralyzed from wobblers and I put him on a raw diet and he’s now running and no signs of wobblers anymore

    • @Cerus98
      @Cerus98 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ana Ferreira - A proper kibble diet would help just as much however this dane is likely done growing. Only surgery will correct it at this point.
      It’s caused by too much calcium, high protein (when plant protein is the primary source) and overall low quality diet.

    • @MsHotkitty69
      @MsHotkitty69 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cerus98
      No I don’t believe that at all. Kibble is not a good source of food for dogs especially Great Danes. I have had several consults with wholistic vets and one wholistic vet I follow is dr Becker. With dr mercola you should watch some of her videos. And no I don’t belive either that surgery is all that. An be done give your pet proper nutrition and their body can heal itself. My dog gets vitamins and enzymes too my dogs wobblers was so bad he was dragging his whole back end on the ground and poo and peeing on himself now since I’ve changed his diet he is running something I never thought I would see him do. I too thought I needed to take him to Ohio for expensive spine surgery or get him goldic injections. But feeding him differently actually made him recover.

    • @Cerus98
      @Cerus98 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ana Ferreira - Depends on the kibble. A Walmart brand dog food is not the same as a high quality grain free diet. Is raw better? Can be when done properly but that doesn’t make all kibble bad.
      Wobblers is caused by an improper diet during the critical growth phase. Poor quality puppy foods with high calcium designed to speed growth are the last thing giant breeds need.
      Raw is not a cure all as much as it’s supporters like to think it is. Compared to a cheap, corn based kibble it’s great. Compared to something like Orijen the difference diminishes greatly.
      A dog so far gone with wobblers that their back end is totally paralyzed isn’t going to be cured simply by a diet change once they’re beyond the growth stage. Which in the case of Danes is 18-24 months.
      If that is your claim then let’s see some before an after videos of an ADULT Dane cure by a raw diet.

    • @MsHotkitty69
      @MsHotkitty69 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cerus98
      My point being if your trying to cure your dog of something your not gonna do it with kibble. I don’t care the brand. Feeding a dog a raw diet is a species appropriate way to feed your dog. You can read about it on TH-cam. Plus they have a lot of raw fed dog face book sites. what are you afraid of by feeding your dog a raw diet with enzymes and whole food. Not a dry matter from a bag? Dogs need moisture and your not gonna get the amount of moisture they need by feeding them the dry food from a bag. I’ll be happy to send you all videos I have of when he was paralyzed but I didnt get any when he was at his worst but I do have some. I had to have an emergency vet come to my house and she diagnosed him with wobblers. I can’t attest for any one else’s dog but I know what whole food and enzymes did for my dog and it gave him his quality of life back. Why are people so scared of raw. I get mine from a reputable company that is frozen to kill any pathogens that may be lurking. I even have a 10 week old German Shepherd I feed the same way and he is not sick he is thriving. Babies have no immune system and if you think raw is the wrong way then why is my baby not sick? He has no diarrhea no illnesses no vomiting nothing. He has really soft fur and he dosent smell. Also when I got him the Breeder was feeding him crappy food and he already had bleeding sores at 8 weeks old only eating that food for two weeks out of his life. Now I’ve had him for one month and the sores are gone there isn’t one sore on his body. There is a freeze dried store bought raw called honest kitchen that is recommended by the “the Great Dane lady” if people want to feed that but I just do real raw and my dogs are thriving. But I’ll be more than happy to send you any videos I have and videos of him running now if you give me your email. The only proof I have is with my dog. Maybe no one has thought of changing a dogs diet when they have wobblers because they have not consulted with a wholistic vet on the matter only neurological vets who want to charge you 3,000 for an MRI and another 6,000 for spine surgery that may or may not work and may even make the dog worse. It doesn’t hurt to try a change in diet. I rescued my danes and they were in pretty bad shape when I got them and I have done pretty extensive reaserch about them in the last 3 years I’ve owned danes and have been following and had consults with wholistic vets so I’m not just out here on a whim when it comes to dog nutrition.

    • @MsHotkitty69
      @MsHotkitty69 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also I can have my husband attest that my dog was paralyzed and now he’s not and all I did was change his diet to raw and enzymes. I didn’t get him some fancy surgery or any shots all I did was give him REAL food. You can’t make up stuff like this. But I can find you some you tube videos of dogs lives changed by a raw diet and they are able to walk again may not be a dane but they aren’t the only dogs who get paralyzed. We may be thinking all wrong here when it comes to wobblers. That dogs are not supposed to have carbs and bagged foods no matter what it is is loaded with carbs and sugars. Their pancreas cannot handle carbs or sugars. And they aren’t meant to be eating that. I noticed right away their was something wrong with the way he walked when I picked him up and he was peeing on himself. I got him in October last year and by January he was paralyzed dragging his back end. We are now in March and he’s only been eating raw since Jan and he is now running it’s not a magical thing it’s called healing with nutrition. And vets do not want you to think it’s possible they want your money. So they lie to you or they would be out of business if people had dogs with no ailments. Well apparently my dog wasn’t too far gone Because he is fine now. Maybe you should try Bruno on raw and see if he gets better. Harlequin danes are known for being super sensitive and react to things. Also I’m not sure where you live but the cold makes a dane with wobblers way worse. I am in Florida and noticed how bad he was getting when the temp dropped a little here

    The dog in the video is what you get from poor breeding. Buy from an ethical breeder that health tests, respects the breed standard, and follows the color code. Also, stay away from dogs with so called "Euro" or "hyper type" breeding. Dogs that follow the breed standard are called classical or American style Danes live much longer and have better health overall. This dog's increasing popularity is slowly destroying it.

      They're also fussier eaters than most dogs; my Dane won't eat most things, while a lab will eat pretty much anything.
      She even has to pick out her own food at the pet-store, she only likes one special brand; she won't eat anything else.
      However she doesn't eat all that much-- again, she's very fussy even at 135 lbs.

      Joe Swanson I took care of great danes for 11 years and they eat a lot when their puppies but level off when they're full grown. They arent done growing until they're 18 months to 2 years old. Plus they are prone to stomach bloating so you should put their bowls up to their mouth when they eat. Dont let them run after they eat for
      at least an hour.
