Coming from a small town in SW Iowa I can attest to the fact that Iowa wrestling is just different. I only wrestled in middle school and high school, but it is much different than my son wrestling in Colorado. In 6th grade we did 2 a days, 1 before school and 1 after school both for 90 min, it builds what they refer to now as grit.
Seems like this film is more about past Iowa teams than current. Current team, the guys win by one or two points in low scoring matches, or lose 'em. The exception is Spencer Lee. He's on a mission to prove he and only he deserves the Hodge this season. Otherwise, the film seems to be describing...dare I say...Penn State's team.
Mb love the comment, I’ve been commenting on this for quite some time now, I am a huge Iowa fan, I myself among others loved watching the brands brothers emulate the Dan gable style system of I’m going to destroy you, after I’m done breaking you you might actually think about never stepping on a mat again, these new guys are ok with being up by 1 point and then pumping the breaks, I’ve seen Warner among others so many times lose by a takedown, a freaking takedown should not be the deciding factor in any of iowas matches, I’m sure people might not like what I have to say but honestly I think there should be a coaching change, I love the brands brothers and I know what they are personally capable of doing on the mat but what they are getting on the mat from there wrestlers is clearly not what penn is getting from there wrestlers, Iowa 97 dream team when gable was able to get the most out of his wrestlers when they needed the most by sheer luck accident or perfect timing is what pen state is constantly getting from there wrestlers, last year everyone besides Lee lost in the finals against a majority of penn state wrestlers that they had beat at the big 10 weeks before, Warner marinele kemer cassiopi, and eirman. It is very very frustrating that year after year penn state is able to make it over that hump when they need it the most and the Iowa squad can’t? And I can’t stand all these teams not wanting to all compete at a big tournament throughout the year, the big tens and the ncaa wrestling tournament is not where we as fans should be seeing so many 1 versus 2 meeting for the first time, I’ve commented on this particular problem for many many times now, how in the world is daton fix supposed to figure out how to beat rby when he only faces him in 3 years in the finals, the 2 toughest guys and that’s were I have to see them wrestle, as a coach this doesn’t even make sense to me on how my wrestler is going to get better just wrestling people I’m not concerned about?

I’m a Hawkeyes wrestling fan, never even been to Iowa. Got hooked after watching live duals during Spencer’s freshman year. Haven’t missed a televised dual sense and have watched almost every Iowa dual on TH-cam. Iowa fans will attack me for this but it seems like Iowa needs fresh coaches mainly for recruiting purposes. The Brands stigma has started to hurt recruiting. Seems that may be why the talent has started drying up and looking like it will be 2nd,3rd,or 4th fiddle to Penn State for the foreseeable future.
Iowa wrestling is iconic. From the Midwest but not Iowa, Iowa wrestling and fans are legendary. Great arena, great school in a great state in America and the awesome fans for a great sport, they deserve more than what the Brands bring to the program

I miss watching Zain, Jason, and Bo wrestle from Penn State. Guys who would look for pin and tech fall first. Carter just looks to win so it’s pretty boring to watch. Do we all remember those four glorious years we got to watch Bo, Zain, and Jason wrestle? Well if for some strange reason you can’t just come to TH-cam and remember. Thank God we have had Spencer, another man who just don’t look to win by decision. Those four go out there to completely dominate by tech or pin.
I’m a Hawks fan, but I have to call Tom Brands out. He does a post match press conference after all the duals except for the one they lost against Penn State. How does USA Wrestling not have him hold a press conference?? What, we can only hear from him when the Hawks win?? USA Wrestling just loaded his press conference on youtube with the win against Oklahoma State. Pretty ridiculous we can’t hear from him or that he doesn’t want to give a news conference after a loss.
