I want you to know that every new waiter feels scared and excited for their first day at work. It is normal, and it is even good that you feel this way! Use the fear and the excitement as motivation to prepare yourself!
It is also good to know that no matter how well you prepare for your first day at work, you cannot avoid the stress and the problems completely!
You will still go through hard and embarrassing moments, but those moments will help you learn faster on the job, so take them as lightly as you could. It is part of the process!
Let's begin with preparing for your first day at work!
Do not wait to get to the restaurant and hit the floor to start learning everything you need to know about your new job! This is irresponsible to the company, but mostly it is bad for you because this attitude will bring you a lot of stress and suffering!
As soon as you know that you have the job, get the menu, the floor plan, and the wine list. No one will expect you to know everything perfectly but put an effort to learn the food and the wine you will serve and make sure you know the floor plan and the table numbers.
If you push yourself and learn the menu from A to Z, you will do yourself a great favor, and you will surprise everyone on your new team very pleasantly. Kind of becoming everyone's favorite from day one!

Know your guests
Another thing you should do to prepare yourself is to learn about the people who visit the restaurant and the people who work there!
If it is a tourist place, where do most of the tourists come from? If they are Chinese, learn some habits and a few words in Chinese! This will impress your guests and your coworkers from day one! The same thing for every nationality that visits the restaurant.
Learn who is your head chef! You will deal with this guy a lot, and it is a good thing to know as much as possible! Use the restaurant website or ask some of the employees there. One thing you should know for sure: The chef loves the people who sell his/her daily specials, so try to do it from your first day!

Practice.
As a new waiter, you will do a lot of clearing and serving. Practice at home how to carry two, three, or four plates and how to buss tables with a lot of dirty dishes and silverware.
Usually, the new waiters have a problem carrying trays! Drink trays and food trays are part of the food and beverage service, so you should be capable of carrying them! Get a tray home and practice! If you don't have a tray, use anything that has similar dimensions and weight to practice.
The last thing you want is to drop a drink on your guest's head on your first day at work!
Learn the F&B terminology used in your restaurant!

i just got a job at a steakhouse and this helped out a lot.. i’m always so hard on myself for not knowing every single thing by my first day.. it’s okay for mistakes to happen tho i just can’t let them discourage me!
Congrats on the job, Isabella! It is good that you want to be perfect but we all make mistakes and we have to accept that! Don't be hard on yourself. Appologize, tell yourself that the next time you will do better and move on! It takes not only learning but also experience and routine to minimize mistakes! Best of luck!

This has been so useful thank you so much, it's my first time working as a waiter and I completely blew it on my first day of training I had forgotten some things from my search and blanderd when I was asked, tomorrow will be my second day of training and I'm doing as much research and possible, I've been memorizing the menu the entire day [it's a really big menu] and I plan on continuing to do as much research as possible every free time I have

Thank you, I am starting a new job today at our local bar and grill. My background is in offices so wow here I go serving tables at 59 yrs old. I can do this, studying the menu is important so I was doing that all last night and I will today before work. Be Prepared 💪❤️🙏🏻

@@TheWaitersAcademy Hi, so far so good…the handheld POS system is complicated but workable. I went in on my day off for an hour studying the menu and the POS system together, boss lady liked that I was trying. On my fourth day I had a table of 16 so I’m glad I put in that time which helped time on the POS. I will be working again on Friday for day 8. At home I am visualizing myself going through the steps in my head so I get that down and also I’m practicing with a tray and water bottles and my own glasses so I learned the balance of the tray. Boss lady said they don’t use trays a lot mostly to bus tables or carry drinks mostly. I don’t like the fact there is a lot of food that looks alike especially the wings. I guess that will be some thing I have to get to know. I talked to the chef who is of the Mexican descent and he said that his favorite thing to cook is French cuisine 😆. He’s very understanding and so hopefully if I were to make a mistake he won’t yell at me lol 🤗 I learned that I have to tip out the bartender at the end of my shift but I don’t know what percentage to use can you help me with that please? Wow. That's why I lost my job at Clarion hotel. I have never done the banquet server job before and my manager did not have the patience. Everyone was complaining that I don't know what I was doing. I'll just keep 👀 watching your videos to learn. I went through everything you talked about. My co workers got me fired. It's not an easy job. Always on my feet. It's too exhausting. It really a pleasure to me to meet this video as it left 3 to 4 days to start a new job as waitress which I have never done before.all I have to say is thanks very much for the clear guides and explanations.
I have only one problems which o don't know how to controls its,am smart,fast learner, quick to read body language of different people in respect of theirs background but the problems I have is that,I can't allow someone to takes advantage over me for a second not to respond to the individual even if it's my boss.
