I love how after Kirk says "Request denied!" You can see Uhura, behind Kirk, slap off the communication button.
It's like an extra emphasis on Kirk's reply. Like, "Hell yeah!"

It was a good episode, but the first season they were still working out who the characters were, what was the organization of Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets, and what kind of stories they wanted to tell. Either because of production time or the network's decision the first episode aired was said to be "The Man Trap" which was a monster show that Rodenberry and others didn't really want to represent Star Trek. I didn't realize until recently that it should have been called "The Honey Trap"

It was a good episode to be sure, but it wasn't one of the 24 or so I bought 30+ years ago on VHS, either because I wasn't that interested in it, or it might not have been available since the store manager didn't want to stock all 79 episodes on the shelf. He made people "special order" the ones they wanted. I did that once, and when I came to pick it up saw a box full of "special orders" of Star Trek episodes for other people. How many VHS tapes might he have sold if they were on the shelf?

When the sphere approached the Enterprise, it was so enormous that they had to decrease magnification so they could see the entire sphere. Then this smaller ship appears.
According to how big things are supposed to be, even this smaller ship would be much larger than the Enterprise (adjusting for the demagnification) lol.
However, later on it's shown as much smaller than the Enterprise.

If only they had a Wesley Crusher of their own. He could pull himself out of time, and fix every bad situation, of every episode of Star Trek TOS. The Mozart of Time and Space. The Organians, Metrons, Melkotians, Trelane, Charlie X, Nomad, The Doomsday Machine............. wouldn't stand a chance against THE WESLEY.

The rank system of StarTrek universe resembles th United States Navy & th British Royal Navy.Rank is indicated by gold solid or dotted braids on sleeves.Shirt color indicates crew members' branch.Command & helm personnel wear green/gold shirts.Operations, engineering & security personnel wear red.Science & medical personnel wear blue. All w/ black collars &undershirts.Certain operations & engineering wore red jumpsuits w/ white undershirts.Frequent death of security, led the popular term redshirt

It's much simpler to remember Gold for command, Red for operations, Blue for sciences. Hence why Spock and McCoy both wear blue. Medical is sciences; life sciences, but sciences nonetheless.

Much (wrongful) fuss was made over the years about Lucille Balls' supposed brilliance and girl power bad-assedness as the lone female standing her ground in the male-dominated world of Hollywood TV production. Baloney! Yes, she was a legendary performer, a smart & dedicated lady and just all around great person. And yes, ultimately we all have Lucy to "thank" for Star Trek (and Mission Impossible and Mannix). Not because she specifically backed the show so much, but because Lucy "went to bat" for the management team she hired (Herb Solow being one) to help her ailing/failing studio operation get back on top. After Desi Arnaz's departure in 1960, Desilu's fortunes dwindled quickly. Lucy continued working hard on her own TV show but didn't necessarily have what it took to successfully run the studio. That just wasn't her thing. She owned the company, not the business acumen.
Lucy didn't even know what Star Trek was initially. She thought it was a "South Seas show". After the initial scripts were sent to her dressing room, she apparently never read them, only glanced at the cover page and summary, picked up the snippets "STAR Trek" and "USS Enterprise" and thought it was a show about American soldiers in the South Seas, being entertained by USO entertainers/stars (no joke!) because in her mind, that's what "USS Enterprise" and "Star Trek" meant and naturally, that would all take place in front of the pretty backdrop of the South Seas, because, why not? After it was all explained to her, she backed the production not because she believed in the show so much, but in the management team she hired to develop such programs.
