I lifted out my 84 CBX engine on my own when I was 26, rotated it on the bench the following day and popped my L4 disk. I still suffer pain to this day, but boy do I miss that bike.

Thanks for watching and commenting Chris ! I dont think even when I was 26 I could have lifted that lump out by myself LOL. It was ok rotating it by myself to work on it on this occasion but rotating it and flipping it over are a far cry from lifting it. I can appreciate how hard that must have been on your back, back pain is an awful deal.
I've not ridden this one much, just bought it, rode it into the shop and there it sat until I started the resto.
6 Videos out there on this restoration now, hope you enjoy them all.

Fun to see a detailed view on a cbx teardown. I got a 86 cbx750f as a first bike and looking to do a service on it. Thanks for the valuable tips!

Thanks for commenting. The starter chain & the starter chain tensioner are the weak points on these bikes.

It's such a treat to see this kind of thing where actual thought and actual care going into a project is so evident regardless of the amount of money spent; it's soothing to watch versus staring at the screen in horror as a Hipster or Gen Z takes a sawzall and cans of flat black paint to a classic bike they've acquired, to make a "dope Cafe Racer"...

Thanks, just showing what method works for me. lets see how cave-man I have to get when removing this engine. Im trying to devise an "elegant" method, I'm now leaning towards a "take the frame off the engine" approach. (not a "remove the engine from the frame" method), But one that does NOT involve laying the bike on its side. I need the approach to work for re-assembly as well and one that wont damage freshly painted frame. Ive seen one on youtube that may work for me.

I love the cb 750 my son bought me a barn find one during the first lock down in the pandemic it was left in a barn for 26 years but is all complete, I am doing a nut and bolt rebuild and am about half way its looking really good, the whole job would of taken me 3 years and £4000, but is great fun

Awesome resto. I own an 1984 as well. I pulled the engine out using an engine hoist using some ratchet straps attached to the pick points and a bit of slack here and there.I did not take the sump or the valve covers out tho.

You will find that the frame that holds the dash, headlight unit, oil cooler and the relays has a lot of rust surface, at least mine had, living ist entire life near Philip Island, Melbourne, Australia. The best way, unless you want to sand blast it, is use paint stripper, having few goals at it. If I could post photos over here I would show how mine is going.

Hello, when I did a restoration on a Suzuki my gs1000g I laid the bare frame on its side and lifted the frame of it, because I was doing it by myself.

Hi Phil, thanks for watching and commenting !!. My criteria for removal of the engine was, It had to be a reversible process for the re installation such that a freshly painted frame would not get scratched. The process is easy on a bike with a removable frame section, but on a bike without you have to get creative if you want to do it with no scratches, especially on one of these where there is zero clearance and yo have to take off the pan, and valve cover to get enough room.
Here is the next video on Engine removal, you can see how I did it :

Hello again. Whilst it is fresh in my mind, the bike looks to be a Japanese model (the heel rests are a giveaway, they are rarely found on export market examples - just to be sure JDM models will have the tank and frame stickers in Japanese and unless it's been changed, the 180kph speedometer, standard speed restriction on all JDM vehicles in the 80s). If any of the above does not apply, great, it's an export market model. If it is JDM the engine will be restricted to 77hp, not 91hp (they actually test at 76hp and 90hp in real terms). This restriction was achieved by fitting smaller main jets in the carbs (about 90s, if memory serves, as opposed to 115 jets in export models) and more restrictive baffles in the silencers, plus a denser air filter element. The air filter will have been long replaced, but if rebuilding the carbs, source European rebuild kits, they will have the larger main jets. With a bit of surgery the baffles can be removed although it may prove a bit too loud. Export spec or an aftermarket exhaust will cure the problem, but we are only talking about 5 hp or so; the main jets are the biggest power killer. As these bikes don't come on song until about 7000 rpm, you won't notice a difference under normal riding, but the JDM models run out of puff at 8500 rpm, unrestricted market models keep pulling strongly to over 9500rpm. The 180kph restriction I have never tried to overcome, it's plenty quick enough for most. I believe the JDM ignitor box cuts out 2 cylinders at 180kph, but I can honestly say I've never put that to practice. My days riding at those speeds are over. 😉

    • @true-moto-resto
      @true-moto-resto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Mark, thanks ! it is a JDM bike for sure. Has Japanese frame sticker (tank was re painted), no rear grab bar per the JDM bikes, has the speed light on the dash as well. I likely will leave it as is, I wont try and eat out any more power. The bike wont get ridden that much to be honest.

You got a time machine in there I could borrow? So I can go back for more pictures of the wiring routing on a 500? hah. I quite like your process. I do a lot of similar things, but your notetaking is substantially better and I can see how it would pay dividends months later when you go back to reassembly.

    • @true-moto-resto

Hi Matt, I "may" have photos of the 500 wiring from my Rothmans 500 Interceptor build. May even have the old note book (not sure). Let me know if you really need anything specific and I can scour my photos etc.

@@true-moto-resto I got it running for the first time this year--i just know I have the wiring all oriented incorrectly. But it's working.
I'll post up in my thread on VFRW if/when I have some questions. I've got one I just can't wrap my head around, but I don't think it's affecting anything. I'm just laughing at how long it's taken to put this thing back together when I essentially took the entire thing apart in a weekend.
Do you stilll have that 500? I watched your vid about it recently and holy moly I love it. When I fired up the 500 for the first time this year it just hit me like a bag of bricks how good the thing sounds. Fired first push. Must be the 40 pilots vs 38s that were recommended since it's usually a bit of a struggle, hah.

I'm at the tail end of a full, nuts and bolts (re-plating stuff at home) restoration of my 1984 Honda VF1000f Interceptor. Just paint on plastic and tank left. I like some of your process to track things and picked up a few tips. Maybe I can share an idea back. I had a removable frame section obviously and you mentioned this. For yours, why not get the bike down to the frame and engine only then lay it on its side? Once you unbolt the engine, the frame is very light to just lift off easily. Just a thought on how I'd approach it. Keep up the great work.

Hi Lorne, thanks for the comment and input. Yea, I'd played with that idea too but in the end I use my engine hoist and it worked well.

@@lornetontegode6986 Hi Lorne, enjoy your VF1KR's. I dont have mine any more. Maybe one day ill get another. I may try the "lay the engine on its side and install the frame" method for my reassembly. I may have to install several of the engine mounts twice, as they mount from the right side (which may be problematic with the frame and engine laying of the right side (only way to install and remove the engine is from the right). Ie install them from the left get the engine in , lift the frame and engine up and re install the mounts from the right.....we will see.
