  • Here you can see the fly in action and learn how to ty the pattern I call the "Top Shelf" hopper. This is a single foam version but I also tie it in a double foam version for hopper/dropper rigs. Its been a really productive pattern for me over the last couple years.
    Materials list:
    I now use 2 style hooks
    Tiemco dry fly hook 2312 sz 12-14 (use this for my single foam version)
    Firehole terrestrial 718 sz 12-8 (mostly for my double foam version -hopper/dropper)
    UTC 140
    ~2mm foam (I use foam from the craft section of Walmart) your color choice
    dubbing - Hares/ice dub blend or any you like...I use superfine (esp for smaller versions) or hares ear at times also
    underwing - gold krystal flash
    wing - I have gone to the poly/macro yarn in dorsey indicators - but any dry fly/para post....This post from Troutbitten has all the details...troutbitten.co...
    Dry fly hackle
    Medium barred centipede legs
    superfine dubbing any color you like...I like rusty brown

    Hey Drew love all your videos! Could you put a material list of what you used in the video description? I know you quickly showed the different materials but for all of us who are newer to the tying game it is hard to know what a lot of those things are exactly. Ie the, flashy coppery stuff, the hackle, rubber leg type, dub color before the hackle... Thanks!

    Love the look of this fly. What model and size hook are you tying on in the video?

      Been a good bug...firehole 718, sz12 - 14 in the video.

    Thanks. After fishing with you last year for carp, I tied a few of these up on a strong hook (hopefully won't break) and I hope to get back up to Arkansas to use them. Meanwhile, I've tied them in a size 10 and I used them for bluegill this year.

    Hey Drew does the single foam version not hold up the dropper fly properly compared to the double foam version?

    • @LooknFishy
      @LooknFishy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not as well especially in fast flows. But I'll use if with light droppers or double dry rigs since it's a little more subtle

    Is the 'double foam' version just two layers of foam, tied the same way?

  • @johnmoore2522
    @johnmoore2522 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So for the double foam version, do you just glue 2 sheets of 2 mm foam together before cutting the foam into strips prior to tying, or do you just overlap 2 strips of unglued foam over each other and tie together as with a Chernobyl ant? Thanks for all the time and effort you put into making and editing these videos! And thanks for not naming specific locations.

      I'm lazy, I just tie them on on top of each other...no glue. I'm planning on creating a slower version of this video with the double foam soon!

      @@LooknFishy That would be great. Double foam dries float the heavier tungsten perdigons better!

    Nice and easy, effective fly. Very similar to a Hippie Stomper which is one of my favorites.

    • @LooknFishy
      @LooknFishy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have heard that before. Definitely see the similarities...mine was built around the foam humpy.

    Wonderful videos. I'm reaching here... but, if you ever get the chance to do a video on the fly you caught 75% of the fish on that would be great. Perdigon, I believe. There are plenty of vids out there on tying them, but, there is nothing like fishing a fly that you know works and seeing it tied by the man himself. Thanks again, Kyle

      @@LooknFishy Thanks sir, love your vids. That stuff from Wyoming was beautiful. I live in Philadelphia area. Trout fishing pretty much done here third week of June except for some spring creeks and tailwaters. Friend move to New Mexico about four years ago. We rented a place up at south fork Colorado last two weeks of July. Excited to try the area. First time flyfishing out west.

      For sure, I've started leaving out the dubbing under the hackle to speed it up some when I'm tying for a trip or on one. Super productive pattern for me!
