      Hello Michael, glad you liked it! At the end of the day, she is still a stunning ship - I just felt it’s a shame that Cunard couldn’t address the maintenance issues raised, and in the grand scheme of things when we look at all the maintenance that ships require - they’re really tiny, cheap tasks to fulfil; some of them I’ve even done working as a Deck Cadet. I’m glad you’re still looking forward to it, and I hope you have an amazing time.

    Love the walk around and I just watched you newer review of your time on QE. You do a great job, keep it up! I must say though, $45 per person may seem a lot for a specialty restaurant on a ship but that's a great price for a steakhouse. My local steak houses will run you $50 - $75 / person depending on the grade, age, cut of the beef.

    • @sailawaymag
      @sailawaymag  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello, thanks for your comment and feedback! The Verandah is priced at the upwards range for speciality dining venues on the cruise ships we’ve been on, but having tried it on both QM2 and QE I can say that it’s fantastic; and worth every penny. The service, food and the premium surroundings made it worth the price - and surpasses the steakhouses on Royal Caribbean, NCL, Princess and P&O in our opinion! I just wish Cunard introduced an extra speciality restaurant onto their ships.

    We did the outward trip to NYC from Southampton on 15th Sep then back again from NYC on the 25th Oct. The trips were very different- it all depends on the weather and the style of entertainment two very big variables. The weather was great in Sep but the entertainment was far better on the October trip…. so it depends on your priorities. A post-pandemic dreary day in Cherbourg hardly gives a feel for this liner when mid-Atlantic or in the Caribbean. I'm not surprised that not all the facilities were open on a cross-channel hop.
    The "wasted deck space" is the outdoor seating area for the Boardwalk Cafe (which I've enjoyed several times).
    After nearly twenty voyages on four different Cunard ships (mostly QM2) I am back on board later this year (first time with Cunard since 2018 (New Zealand and Australia) and will post my opinions and video here.

      Thank you for your comment here, i was thinking the narrator was a bit harsh on the "wasted space" as they were clearly tables and chairs right next to him when recording this clip and the celebrity-laughing private deck? Well, privacy is a luxury when you are confined with a lot of strangers in a small space, so I find some comments in this video unnecessarily harsh and short-sighted.

      Yes. I hate to fly long distances and I use her for transportation to get to Europe and back from the United States. When flying, you deal with jet lag, the hassle of the airport, and the overall unpleasant and uncomfortable experience of sitting in a small seat for seven or so hours over the ocean with junk (pasta with a side of pasta) to eat. The QM2 is truly the only pleasant way to cross the Atlantic. The ship is beautiful, the service excellent, and the price for an interior cabin in Britannia class is less than a first class plane ticket. I honestly wish we had another ocean liner in transatlantic service as QM2 is often sold out. It would be nice for a generous billionaire (they don't exist) to help restore SS United States to back to service...as she could cross the Atlantic in only 4 days.

      @sailawaymag  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry to hear that you had a similar experience to us! I take a different view with regards to the pandemic. Speaking as an officer with a different cruise line, I can say that during the height of the pandemic I was anchored next to QM2 in Weymouth. And whilst at anchor, maintenance tasks is all the crew could do on our ship; therefore I’m left dumbfounded as to why she was in such a sorry state. Much of the disrepair I witnessed on QM2 could have been addressed with a lick of paint and a coat of polish - jobs which would have easily been taken care of by the bosun and his deck crew, and very little expense to Cunard. When you don’t keep on top of these small maintenance tasks, they become much bigger jobs where timber stairwells etc need to be replaced in their entirety. Hopefully I have a better experience on QE next month 🤞🏻

    One of our staff was on the Cunard QMII in March and felt it was very tired and that the staff fell way short of even basic expectations. He had a mental health issue during a 14 day trip, whilst travelling as a solo traveller. He had booked the cruise to help him feel better following the loss of his Mum. He wanted to disembark in Barbados and cut the cruise short due to loneliness, with the 'solo traveller' promises being woefully neglected... but the undertrained staff treated him with contempt and dismissed his concerns. Cunard showed ZERO concern or support and they not only told him that he couldn't get off the ship but also didn't once ask him "why" he wanted to leave. They just didn't care. After many emails and formal complaints on board, Cunard simply brushed it off. Our colleague is coping better now and has written to the tv programme 'Watchdog'. Disgusted!

    • @sailawaymag
      @sailawaymag  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, that’s a very sad story and I’m sorry to read it. Usually, there are social events and gatherings onboard for solo guests, and the main dining venues usually try and seat solo passengers on larger tables of 6 or 8 to prevent them from feeling alone and isolated. It’s disappointing that the medical centre onboard wasn’t able to assist in this matter either.

  • @CJODell12
    @CJODell12 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Fun fact: Cunard started its existence way back in 1840. It was acquired by the American cruise line operator Carnival Corporation in 1998 (62 percent) and 1999 (the remaining 38 percent). It was partly because of Carnival’s plentiful resources that allowed not only Cunard’s survival but for Queen Mary 2 to be built in the first place. Although after 18 years of service at this point, QM2 could admittedly use another small refit.

They have clearly developed their service over their almost two hundred years in operation, and you will not experience service like that anywhere else on Earth. My family liked it enough that we are going again in six days from now Europe to New York.

    Thanks for this, that's such a shame that you didn't enjoy it and felt she needs some TLC, I'm surprised that Cunard would let the decks get into that shabby state. I've never cruised or really been into the idea of cruising before but I kind of want to try QM2 just to see what an ocean liner is like, but it's sooo much money and I'm hesitant about spending so much and then possibly not enjoying it! Especially as you have to add drinks and gratuities on top of your fare 😬 so I don't know, maybe you could get better for cheaper on a different cruise line, I'm just sort of attracted by the charm of being on a Cunard ship.

    You mentioned the restaurants for those in suites ..... You are allocated a specific table and stewards which remain yours throughout the cruise. You can turn up at any time and find them ready for YOU. The menu and food is superb - in the top suites they serve caviar, lobster .... etc in the restaurant, and if you ask for something you particular desire be it fillet or cottage pie, the chef will accommodate. We asked up front for a favourite single malt and they sourced it - it was ready in the suite on a silver tray with two Crystal glasses on arrival. The leisure decks for the suites were closed on your trip ... It normally has thick luxurious padded cushions and stewards on hand. The closures weren't surprising given that you were on quick overnighter. The stairs and decks are waxed at the start of the Transatlantic crossing season - sea salt consistently damages so it needs repeating each year. One of the "underutilized" decks that you mentioned, is actually the dog passengers' off lead run area. It is a magnificent way to travel!

    I wouldn’t say that, because after all it wasn’t because of you, that the facilities were closed for maintenance, is that the ship is definitely how old? They should’ve taken care of that whilst the ship wasn’t dry dock for Christ sake‘s! And as far as weather I’m well, I could be better. I went on the grand princess four years ago and I hope to go on another cruise on another ship when things are better and as far as ocean liners go, that I would vouch for the good old symphony of the seas over the QM II, not only because it’s just as elaborate as far as I’m concerned, but because it has more family fun entertainment on board, including laser tag and ice-skating. Not to mention, the water wave simulator outside. The queen Mary 2 can definitely use those things if they want to practice more families on board.

    • @sailawaymag
      @sailawaymag  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I’ve been on 7 cruises in the last 6 months with six different cruise lines. No other ship had thermostats falling off of the bulkhead, door handles hanging off, closed pools and hot tubs, a closed spa, severely stained sun loungers, marked and unhygienic pool areas - and to top it off, the service wasn’t even very good either! It’s not “nit-picking”, the ship was in a state of disrepair. And judging from much of the feedback I’ve read, I’m not the only person to feel this way; and if Cunard didn’t feel I had a case, they wouldn’t have issued me a 33% refund. So, no. COVID was not an excuse. She was anchored off of Weymouth for the best part of 18 months alongside the ship I was working on as an officer, and I can tell you that while at anchor and out of service, maintenance tasks was all we could do. So, actually facilities being closed for maintenance was in my opinion inexcusable; especially when they’re charging customers the same amount of money. They should have informed guests that these facilities were going to be closed, and that the ship would not be able to provide guests with the promised experience, and give them the option to cancel or transfer free of charge.

      I’m afraid not. It would be lovely if spring water and wine with dinner was standard on all cruise lines. That would do us, and we wouldn’t look into drink packages!

      Desalinated, purified and filtered sea water…yes! That’s pretty standard among all cruise lines, exempt the premium 6 star lines. It does bother me on cruises.

    Just looks like an Ocean Liner pretending to be a cruise ship which is sad.

    Surrounded by luxury ? No , I have sailed on her 3 times , due to the fact that I do not like to fly . The decoration of the ship is very cheap , plastic art , around the main elevators and oil paintings of old Cunard ships . The food is okay a t best and the crew a bit on the snarky side , with the exception of Costa , Costa has the worst , of the ill mannered crews . I sailed on Norwegian and the crew was very polite and the food was way better and so many more fun activities.

      I happen to agree with you to an extent Joseph! I think Cunard overpromise on surroundings, service and cuisine. I’m not blown away when I’ve been on Cunard, as I have been on ships belonging to competing cruise lines. I think the decline in standards kicked in when Carnival took over

      @@sailawaymag What I find head shaking, is how people are so impressed with this ship , The Q M 2 puts me in mind of an average hotel in a major North America city . The self serve buffet had the same deserts that are so common in North America , cherry pie , chocolate pie etc , in other words nothing special . That is why I so blown away with The Norwegian Escape with it's large variety of different bars and restaurants and activities, the crew was lovely and Julie the cruise director was a very nice lady , I never saw the cruise director on any of my 3 crossings on The Q M 2 .Also I am a single male and The Q M 2 had male dancers for the ladies and no female dancers for the men , so we stood around and watched the male dancers , dance with the ladies ,it is not the nicest way to treat your male passengers . The attitude The Q M 2 has if you do not like it , you can get stuffed . I wish Royal would have an Oasis Class ship that crossed as many times as The Queen Mary 2 .

      Hello Rick, hope you’re well! Yes, we raised it with the Customer Service manager whilst onboard. We were given a complimentary meal at Verandah (which was a goodwill gesture for the condition of the cabin) and a £200 cheque to put towards a future cruise, because of so many facilities being under maintenance. However, in hindsight - I wish we never went!
