An 8-Night Transatlantic Crossing on the Queen Mary 2 for the first time: What was it like?

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 12 ก.ย. 2024
- I took an 8-night crossing on Cunard Cruise Line's Queen Mary 2 from New York to Southampton, England. It was my first time ever on the Queen Mary 2. In this video, I recap what the Eastbound Transatlantic was like, and what to expect cruising with Cunard upon the Queen Mary 2.
I will share information about the Transatlantic weather, the Cunard dress code, all of the activities available on the QM2, and more. The Queen Mary 2 is a very unique experience, so please tune in! Are YOU planning a crossing on the QM2? If so, please leave a comment and tell us when you're going!
Stay tuned until the end for a word about the dress code as well as what this trip meant to me, personally!

Hi everyone, just a note… I did make a mistake in this video and identified our dining room as the Britannia Club. In reality, it was just the Britannia restaurant. Apologies!
The fact that there is a library says it all.
This is the kind of trip I wanted to take with my Mom, but she passed in 2015. So to see you with your family, gave me a warm feeling inside! Mom would have loved that afternoon tea, and room service breakfast! Thankyou for sharing!
I am so sorry for your loss! So glad the video gave you a warm feeling. And yes, so grateful I got to take my mom on such a special trip. She adored the afternoon tea!

@@SheSailsAway I was so lucky to be able to take my 88-year-old mother on the QE2 round trip from NYC in 2002. I think it was her trip of a lifetime, although she’d been on many with me. The refined formality on board was so much more her style than mine, but we both totally enjoyed both crossings.
@susanpierres2441 sounds like wonderful, special memories. We have ours now, too. Thank you for sharing 😊
After working for a few years in America, retirement came along, and we were back home to Yorkshire in the UK. We sailed out of New York on the QE2. My wife and I wondered whether eight days at sea might be boring. We could not have been more wrong. It was like a four-star hotel with endless entertainment.

Hi Kelly/ Kellie . I just wanted to say what a great video have done. I’ve never been on the Queen Mary 2, but I really want to do transatlantic crossing on her. The QM 2 has such elegance. I’m pleased it’s not all modern inside. I like classic vintage style look, which I know does suit an older generation who would appreciate that. I’m so pleased that your mum and your aunt travelled too. You say they have significant health problems, but hopefully they enjoyed the choosing. I hope both your mum and aunt will feel better very soon if possible.
Thank you so much! And yes, they loved the voyage very much. We have so many happy memories! Thank you again!
My cousin has crossed the Atlantic on the QM2 8 times and loves it. I've watched a lot of TH-cam videos in anticipation. Your video is the best to give me a sense of what a week in the QM2 would be like. Thank you!
@@jeremiahreilly9739 thank you so much! Enjoy your voyage!
I always watch 'till the end. Touched my heart, you did. I love gala nights. I can do the kilt in a sleeveless ghillie and sandals right through to black tie and brogues.
Sounds wonderful! Thank you for sharing. ☺️
We also have taken the QM2 six times across the Atlantic, 4 times from NYC to Southampton and twice the other way. For us, the sheltered balcony rooms have been the best for us (we haven't been in either the suites or inside or oceanview cabins. The sheltered balcony is more protected than the more expensive open balcony, still with a very good view. This is great when the weather isn't so good which is pretty common crossing the Atlantic, even in late spring and summer. We like it much more than the not much cheaper obstructed view balcony rooms, where you get a good view of the giant lifeboats. We haven't been on a regular cruise ship in this century, with our first Princess cruise (to Alaska) next year), so our only experience has been on the QM2. We switched from flying to London to avoid jet lag, and the QM2 is about 30% cheaper than flying business class back and forth, something that was a very pleasant surprise to us.
Wow that sounds amazing to have sailed that many times with her. What wonderful memories you must have. Thank you so much for sharing and I hope you enjoy your Alaska cruise as well!
Thank you! I go in less than 6 weeks. I loved the music and the ending to your video very much. Best regards.

Kelly,
We have been on 4 QM2 Crossings and your video ABSOLUTELY NAILED IT. Well done. It is a special experience and your video does a great job conveying that experience. Our first Crossing was a "once in a lifetime" trip to celebrate our 40th anniversary. It's addictive.
Just one question, I noticed that your closing narrative was posted as a mirror image so that your Brooklyn shirt appeared backwards.
Thank you so much! 😊 And how wonderful to have crossed on the QM2 that many times!
I think your question is, why is my shirt-writing mirrored/backwards? If so, it's because I filmed that part with my phone, and whenever I film myself with my phone it's a mirrored capture. (If there's a fix for that, I don't know what it is 😁) Thank you for your kind words; I am
so glad that you enjoyed the video!
While the QM 2 cruises elsewhere, the trans Atlantic trip is adamantly referred to as a CROSSING by Cunard. I was corrected right away on a phone call with them. Oh, and they referred to the accommodations as either a stateroom or cabin. So, not being nautically correct, we instead took a 13 night trans Atlantic voyage from Ft. Lauderdale to Barcelona with Viking. A very good choice in our case.
We did the New York to Southampton crossing in September 2017; this was something I had always wanted to do. The QM2 is an amazing liner. We were very fortunate with the weather, the Atlantic being like a "mill-pond" for most of the crossing, so much so that there was almost no feeling of movement. After breakfast I would head for the library and sit in the armchair's over looking the bow, a wonderful way to mentally prepare for the strenuous day ahead (- this is a joke! LOL). Having the opportunity to dress formal was good and something that we don't do in our every day lives. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending the QM2 an an Atlantic crossing to anyone who was genuinely looking for a unique travel experience.
That's wonderful information, thank you so much for sharing. We also had wonderfully smooth seas. Those chairs in the library are beautiful!
I took QM2 a few years ago. Loved it. 🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Thanks for this. I booked last night to sail out of my hometown Southampton to New York for Christmas 26. I've done several P and O before but am really excited to try Cunard and experience a proper ocean liner

I did westbound on the original Queen Mary in 1961. The 2 looks beautiful. You mentioned the beautiful sunsets but your heading east into the sun but it is a beautiful sunrise 😂

Myself and my granddaughter were on for the roundtrip from Southampton from the 16th August
We had mostly excellent weather
She enjoyed her time in N Y she went with Barbara one of the lovely people waiting on us
We enjoyed dressing up,the food was amazing, everyone looked after us so well

Nice down-to earth video thanks
Thanks for your video. The east-bound trip is not a cruise in the traditional sense, as the Southampton destination is the only port you'll visit after leaving NY. One consequence of this is the activities and entertainment are important!
@@kjh789az definitely!
Thank you for an enjoyable and accurate video about QM2. You did research, knew what to expect, and appreciated what this unique ship offers. Very tiring to see videos from supposedly “knowledgeable” vloggers who have done no research or have not watched the literally dozens of QM2 videos. We love this ship. Clearly has a distinct “target audience” which is why Carnival bought Cunard. We love the myriad spaces where you can be alone if you want, or others where you can be in the middle of everything. Nice job.

My paternal grandparents and father immigrated aboard the original Queen Mary in 1962. And later, in the early 90s, I was a tour guide aboard the Queen Mary. Later still, between military stints, I served aboard all 3 of the US's flagged vessels, Pride of America, Pride of Hawaii, and Pride of Aloha. My wife and I want VERY much to sail aboard the QM2. 11:44 On the positive side, they have a dress code. I'm up to here with traveling with people dressed like total slobs. Baseball caps, cargo shorts, graphic Tees, sandals with socks, Fanny packs, bed hair, greasy ponytails. This lack of tasteful clothing and poor grooming has made travel a negative experience for me. Granted, I'm a 75 year old man who is a fashion forward gentleman so perhaps I have outlived a time when dressing your best meant improving your life experience in all things, especially travel. Such a pity it's' become a Greyhound Bus ride. Thankfully there are rare exceptions.
Nice video! It's great to sail away!
Thank you!
Well first off, how nice your nephew joined his aunts abd mom and grandmother! I want to go on the QM2 one day but $$$I am sure. I am an American that probably loojs sloppy, dont like looking like that, but lije being comfy. If a I did go , I would try dressing better though. Only problem, Cunard reminds me too much to " the Titanic, " creepville😢
Just wanted to note - the Britannia 'Club' section has its entrance and seating area at the rear of Britannia - deck 2, off the 'D' staircase lobby area. Folks in those cabins pay a premium price to have the same table waiting for them at Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner. On six crossings so far [number 7 and 8 planned for this October] we have always selected a 'sheltered balcony' room similar to yours - but opt for the late seating to allow time between afternoon tea and dinner ;-)
One nice thing on a QM2 crossing is that the passports are checked during the eastbound crossing, so when you arrive in Southampton as an 'in transit' passenger you can just walk off and come back whenever you want.
@@dl11950 that's true!
I have fixed the video but it's going to be a few days of re-uploading and reprocessing to get the fix on the channel. Thank you for catching that!
Loved watching this video as I look forward to my eastbound 8-night crossing booked on QM2 this winter. Glad to see you had a great time! Curious: Do you remember which nights the time zones changed going east on the 8-night crossing? As I recall London is 5 hours ahead of New York, so I was curious which days had the time change.
@@aeotsuka I actually don't remember but I have that information at home. I'm traveling right now and will look it up when I get back. Hiw fun to have such a great voyage to look forward to! Enjoy!
@@SheSailsAway thank you!
For the eastbound crossings, the time change is usually at noon - clocks advance to 1PM for a shortened afternoon. That way you [and the crew] still get a full night's sleep. On westbound crossings, the hour is put back so it is 3AM twice for 5 nights.
Nicely done.
We did the QM2 crossing in December
A great experience but the main restaurant and food is a waste of time.
The buffet would be fill of people in evening wear looking for something to eat after the restaurant closed, obviously still hungry.
We will do it again but skip the Brittania restaurant entirely next time
Oh dear, that sounds terrible! We had the completely opposite experience. Thank you so much for sharing!

@@DaleStake-b1d exciting!
You must have been on our crossing. Like you, spent alot of time in the Corinthian lounge, where we took our tea, or on the last days we took it out to the promenade deck and watched the dolphins.
My only complaint was the food. Overall, it was surprisingly bland. Not bad, just OK and after 7 days. Will look for your review.
Our table companions told us this was their 12th crossing! and the complained the food had really gone down hill. On the last day I the Brittania room all of us sent our dishes back. This was handled very professionally, but disappointing. I do recommend treating yourself to the Veranduh restaurant. For the price, it compared well to the best steak houses.
Thank you so much for sharing, how fun that we were on the same cruise! Some of my family members did complain that the desserts were extremely bland, but overall I really liked the entrées. I do feel that overall in the cruising industry everywhere I go, food has taken a huge nose dive on board. Not sure what's happening there. How exciting that you saw dolphins! I missed that but I did see a few whales. Thank you so much for commenting and sharing
Thanks for the warning!
Thank you Kelly, for a most informative, first hand experience of a transatlantic crossing that my wife and I are considering. I really do appreciate the British standards and style…..this would be the way I would like to cross the Atlantic….with a bit of flair! One question, how were the men dressed? Suits, tuxedo, casual…?
Thank you! We saw lots of tuxedos on gala nights. Some on non-gala night but mostly gala nights. Otherwise we saw various suits and jacket combinations, ties and bow ties. Some were very creative!
Not a great experience for us on board QM2. Walking deck heaving with lots of people going both ways and all the lounger chairs in the way. We were lucky enough to be in Princess grill restaurant and it felt like a goldfish bowl with walkers peering in through windows. Our cabin bathroom was full of mould and we had blocked drains twice in the cruise. We will go with more modern cleaner ships.
Oh my goodness that sounds terrible!
Generally regular transit has not been called a cruise. In 1958 when my family sailed from NYC on the QUEEN MARY, it was not referred to as a cruise. It was transit; it was a crossing
Were you able to actually view the water from the balcony if you were sitting in the chairs? It looked like the wall was in the way.
No you could not see anything if you were sitting down in the chairs, they were low to the ground and the wall was high.
We enjoyed your QM2 videos! We sail in 6 days for a 30 night round trip British Isles voyage from New York! Was embarkation a smooth process for you in Brooklyn? Our assigned boarding time is 2:00pm which seems so late. We will have to check out of our hotel in Brooklyn by 11am and wonder if we can just go to the cruise terminal early.
Wow, that sounds like an amazing cruise! Yes, boarding was very easy. We were not allowed to board till 1 PM.
Sometimes if you talk to the hotel front desk they'll let you have an extra hour or so in your room, or they might hold your luggage if you go out and walk around for a while to kill some time before you head over.
It might not hurt to call and ask Cunard as well! Enjoy your cruise, it sounds wonderful
Go early. You may have to wait if they are very busy, so consider bringing a book or something. We were lucky came early and were on the ship when we were supposed to start boarding/ checking- in. We travelled Hamburg to NY though.

I was just wondering, did the QM2 leave from Manhattan or Brooklyn. I lived in Brooklyn and would see the ship depart from there. FYI. If you’re leaving from Brooklyn there are several very nice hotels in the Brooklyn heights area, that’s where I’m from, so I kind of know the area. It might not be Manhattan, but gives you another option of where to stay. One stop away by subway.
BTW. I did enjoy your video. Thanks.
@@richardschindler8822 we sailed from Brooklyn! Good point, thank you for sharing!
Having completed the transatlantic crossing just a week ago, we sadly, after sailing with Cunard on other occasions felt that standards are falling in the catering. The staff in cabins and in the Britannia restaurant are beyond criticism for courtesy, attention and willingness to help but the food has slipped a long way in recent years despite price hikes. Afternoon Tea was a shadow of its former glory, scones with little to no fruit, literally a scraping of cream and i mean a scraping...i could go on. Portions in the main restaurant were sometimes very mean, a second bread roll was never offered and had to be begged ..it just wasn't quality. As for any children aboard, which there were, the three ice cream machines spent more time in 'wash mode' or 'out of order' which seemed unacceptable and would have been hugely disappointing as on past sailings these were extremely popular. One other note, the much publicised 'expensive refit' didnt seem to extend to the very tired and damaged furnishings aboard which have not changed in the many years we have sailed. It is a unique experience to be sure, but do not expect five star..imho.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience here. Good to know!
Yes, its a sad fact that standards are reported to have fallen recently and this is connected with reduced staff. The new Cunard ship, recently launched, is now the line's priority.
so enjoy your viedo 👍🏻 thanks for sharing, how many Gala Night Live Band Party they take place during this trip ?
We had 2. Black & White, and Roaring 20s. Thank you so much for watching and sharing!
We're looking forward to ours in October. We're you able to see the milky-way at night?
@GiantJake I was not, I didn't look for it the first night, then we had all of that fog for a few days. Once we got close to England the sun didn't set until after 11 PM! I didn't stay up late enough to look once we were in Norway, and in Norway it stayed light until past my bedtime 😊
I am on M433 17th October
@@COLINJELY what a beautiful month to travel
Note: you mis-labeled Britannia as the Britannia Club. The Britannia Club is the private restaurant for the Britannia Club cabins on deck 12 and 13. Same menu as Britannia plus a list of always available alacarte options and a reserved table with no set dining time.
@johnwisdom3774 I sure did, thank you so much. I have fixed the video and I'm in the process of re-processing and re-uploading, it will be a few days before the fix shows up. Thank you
I am doing an 8 night Westbound in October, we visit Le Harve. I believe due to congestion in NYC they vary between 6 and 8 day crossings?
@@COLINJELY I'm not sure how that works but you're right, I have noticed that sometimes they're seven nights and sometimes they're eight
The westbound crossing is still 7 nights - from LeHavre. The prior eastbound sailing was bumped up by two days to board on 4 October, and picked up stops in Newport and Boston before making the crossing from Boston to Southampton. This seems to be related to the new MSC ship being given priority in Brooklyn.
Thank you for a great video. I don’t have sea legs so what time of year do you think would be most suitable for calmer seas?
@@Petersworld77 that's a tricky one, because of course storms can pop up at anytime. I think in general May through July is your best shot at calmer seas. Maybe some others in the comment section have some insight?

Nothing mentioned about gratuities, I have been on a couple of cruises (not crossings) 1 where gratuities were paid on checkout and the other all inclusive. I find it an extra burden having to pay more at the end of the sailing and it's usually very deflating and takes the shine off.

Hi , could you tell me if you were able to dine with your family? , if so how do you go about organising that?
Good question, we had three separate cabins and three separate reservations. We worked with a Cunard representative in booking our rooms and she took care of making a request to make sure we all dined together. I really don't know how you would go about it otherwise. Maybe somebody in the comments knows how to link reservations on your own? But the travel representative at Cunard took care of linking our reservations. That insured that we dined together and it also insured that one of us could select early or late dining on behalf of our entire party.

How much do meals drive up the cost of crossing?
Majority of dining available on the ship is complimentary. There are specialty dining restaurants that cost extra, but we didn't do any of those so I don't know what those would run per person.
@@SheSailsAway Thanks... Always wondered how many hidden costs there are.
It's not a Transatlantic cruise, but The Transatlantic Crossing.
Can you take a transatlantic cruise that is simple, without all the activities? I just don’t want to fly.
You can search for a cruise port within driving distance of your house or maybe a train ride away, and see what ships go out of that port, and whether or not they are doing a transatlantic. Most cruise lines do a transatlantic at least twice a year, of course the Queen Mary 2 does them several times a year but they are mostly in and out of New York and European locations.
As for activities, you do as much or little as you want, once you're on board. Many people spend their entire cruise reading a book or lying by the rail, watching the ocean drift by!
Thank you!
So what does it cost?
Re dress code, looks like you dressed as classy people would. Or used to.
Cost of a voyage on the Queen Mary 2 varies all over the place, depending on when you travel, what category of cabin you book, things like that.
@@SheSailsAway I’ve seen up to $100000pp to $2000pp. That’s quite a range. For $200k you could charter a Gulfstream.
I long for the day when cruise companies realise they don't have the right to tell us how to dress. You can go to the best restaurants in the world and they wouldn't presume to say "only wear this". Stop it now, let people do what they want, it's their holiday.
@@two20john well that's an interesting perspective, and I can see your point. I do cruise much more casual cruise lines in general and I find that the dress code is not an issue there.
I for one find it refreshing that some cruise lines still have higher standards than others.
Just take a cruise on a cruise line that suits your wish of no dress code. Others appreciate the kind of cruising where a dress code is in place. Everyone has a different taste.
@@two20john BTW, a cruise line absolutely has the right to have a dress code. If you don’t like it, may I suggest Carnival cruise lines.
When the ship is being used as a way to get over to Europe it would be rather silly to bring a bunch of formal clothes only to be used on the ship and then just carried around for weeks across Europe. Since we travel only with carry one we will have to relegate ourselves to the buffet if we decide to use this mode of transportation. Just sucks that we would be paying the same as those enjoying their full benefits of meals in the main dining room.
