This song has very special meaning for us. My husband and I met when we were 11. When I was 19 and in the early stages of pregnancy with our first son, I was sat in the student union bar on campus, drinking a Henry (remember them?) waiting for my husband, then boyfriend, to get out of a lecture. Our parents didn’t support our situation and we were under immense pressure to focus on career and had reluctantly agreed to put the baby up for adoption. Neither of us was happy with this decision. We knew we were each other’s forever and we’d end up having children together eventually although we didn’t intend to start our family as teenagers. While I waited, this song came on. Even though I knew the song well, it was like it was brand new and I was hearing it for the first time. As I sat there contemplating my situation, the baby, who I had not yet felt move must have been listening too. Just at the part where he sings ‘hey you with the pretty face, welcome to the human race’ he kicked for the very first time. Almost as if to say ‘I’m here, I’m coming’. I patted my small bump and said ‘Welcome to the human race baby.’ In that moment I knew. The moment my husband finished his lecture and met me in the S.U Bar, he did too. I described what happened. I told him there was no way I could let other people raise our baby. I would do it by myself if I had to. I wouldn’t ask him for anything. He took my hands and let go of the breath he’d been holding for the past several weeks. “Oh thank god.” He said. “I didn’t know how to say it because it’s your body, your choice, but I’ve been feeling the same way.” Almost 7 years later, after my husband and I married, we walked down the aisle to this song. Along with us, our 6 year old and his 3 year old brother.
When you get invited to join Dylan, Harrison, Petty and Orbison to form a super band you’ve definitely got the respect of your peers, even if the general public doesn’t know who you are anymore. He’s definitely a genuine musical genius and I never get tired of his music
@@jamescobb420 the funny thing is that The Wilburys did more for Tom Petty's career than the others because that's how he met Jeff Lynne, who revitalized Tom's songwriting and music.
This song saved my life when I was 18 and in the grips of my first major clinical depression. I finally saw and heard it performed live about 6 years ago, and Jeff Lynne's wall of music penetrated my entire body as I stood up for it in the Inglewood Forum. It was like being hugged by God and told, "Aren't you glad you stayed?"
All sorts of things can do that - of course they can, we're all different and we all have different buttons that can be pushed by different things in different circumstances - but, even so, that's such a gorgeous story! Not the fact that you needed it, obviously. But the idea that a bright, happy song (about feeling bright and happy) can do exactly what we all hope it could do...well, that's just so perfect. Good things do good. It's great to hear that something as simple as that is actually true. And it makes listening to it even more perfect. We know it sounds uplifting, but knowing it literally has the power to save people...well, how perfect is that?! Hope you ARE glad you stayed.
@@ProfessorofRockTwo things have always struck me about what has always been one of my favourite songs. It’s breathless pace ( in truth too fast to dance to) and the subtle variations in the chord progressions. There’s a great undertow in the coda, too: the final chord is almost impossibly imposing..
For my money, ELO is the most underrated and underappreciated band of the rock era. The masterful symphonic arrangements that Lynne and company created are completely unparalleled in rock music. My favorite is Shine A Little Love, but others like Turn To Stone, Don't Bring Me Down, All Over the World, Twilight, I'm Alive, Telephone Line, Last Train to London, Fire on High, Evil Woman, Livin' Thing, Sweet Talkin' Woman, and Showdown are all masterpieces. Damn, and I almost forgot about their work on the Xanadu soundtrack!
I got into ELO only a few years ago after seeing the name in the credits after hearing a great soundtrack. No other band has made me say "They made that one too?!" more times. My phantasy theory was that ELO was created when all the best bands of the 60s and 70s had a lovechild together that wrote and performed all the songs The Beatles didn't have time to make. :D But honestly, they were more diverse than that.

Jeff Lynn is my favorite musical artist. Without his hair and shades he could walk out amongst people and never be noticed. I would love to meet the genius.
The entire album "Eldorado" deserves to be spotlighted IMO. I know I've listened to it hundreds of times over the years and it never ceases to amaze me.
I think that was one of the 3 LPs on the Three Light Years boxed set. My second cousin had that and I used to play those LPs on his Sony separates hi-fi on a Sunday morning.
Jeff Lynne should probably be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame individually. for all of the songwriting and producing he's done for others, added to the fact that there wouldn't have been a Traveling Wilburys without his work in putting it together. He's already in with ELO, of course.
The Traveling Wilburys; all the members are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but not the group itself. Jeff Lynne did some good stuff with Dave Edmunds.
It didn't matter what song it was, anything by ELO was awesome! Mr. Blue Sky found its way to me late in the game ... but, better late than never. I love this song! It really is a classic.
This was my youngest daughter's fave song as a child. I remember one spring, it was cold and rainy everyday, so we said we'd play it in the car every morning until the sun came out again. She had it as her phone alarm until the day she graduated high school. What a way to start the day!
As a kid I also knew the Sparky's magic talking piano story and when I bought the Out of the Blue album and played Mr Blue Sky I always thought of Sparky. Amazing that you now tell me Sparky's Magic Piano was the inspiration for that for that sound on the record.
Jeff Lynn is a super musician, and brings such great joy to many. The song, Mr. Blue Sky, always gives me a surge of happy 😊 and the kids LOVE to sing-a-long with us.
@@ProfessorofRock, I did introduce them to it :) Back when our oldest (now 12) was only 2 or 3. It's a song on my play lists, and in my CD collection, and so it often gets played on road trips! 🚘 which it is a perfect song for.
Jeff Lynne is a bona fide genius. For once, the word underrated is not misplaced. Huge in the 1970s and beyond in album and single sales but I suspect a lot of people today are not as familiar as they could/ should be with their great body of work. The 1970s is a long time ago now but ELO are definitely amongst the all time greats. Time is a tour de force of a concept album.
When you get invited to join Dylan, Harrison, Petty and Orbison to form a super band you’ve definitely got the respect of your peers, even if the general public doesn’t know who you are anymore. He’s definitely a genuine musical genius and I never get tired of his music.😊
Yes, Professor! You finally covered my favorite music artist of all time! Jeff Lynne is a true genius in an industry that overuses that word. I have loved Electric Light Orchestra since 1976 or 1977. Your viewers should be aware that Mr. Blue Sky is only the tip of an enormous iceberg. Jeff Lynne and company had dozens and dozens of gorgeous pop gems beyond the obvious big hits. It's well worth a deep dive into their catalog. Great video.
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 Love ELO! Very underrated band. Jeff Lynne truly was a creative genius. Later became an accomplished producer. Mr. Blue Sky is definitely a happy song 🎵 Thanks Professor! 2 great classic episodes so far this week!
Yes, they've been underrated for decades. I wish I'd seen them in 2014 on that last comeback tour. Their 1978 UFO and lasers stage show was legandary. My second cousin had the boxed set Three Light Years of three of their unxharting early to mid 70s albums and I used to pkay it a lot around 1978. The boxed set itself charted, probably because it was released just after Out of the Blue. ... Strange Magic.
"Jeff Lynne(ELO) is all of the harvest that The Beatles left sown in their path. But he is the best seed and the best fruit. There is not and will never be another one. Neither more beautiful nor more perfect."
im 18, found this band last year and loved them since. my faves used to be telephone line and strange magic but discovered shangri-la and nightrider recently and they r so good. i wish their other tracks than mr blue sky were more famous tho i cant deny that its the one that introduced me to the band, they really are that great :]
I saw ELO in 1981, and I gotta say, of all the concerts I've been to, ELO was the best! It sounded so beautiful. I have never been so emotionally moved listening to a band. I stood there with tears running down my face, and the hair standing up on my arms. I don't what it is about it, but just listening to the ending of Mr. Blue Sky on your video, STILL made my hair stand up. Jeff Lynn is the Johann Bach of my era.
I've always loved ELO. I listen to them when I need to get work done around the house as it helps me get into action. The only problem is their songs stick in my head so much it's hard to sleep at night because they're like on a loop in my head. They're one of my faves though!
Out of the Blue is one of my favorite albums of all time. ELO's music still affects me in my late 60's, just as it did when I was young! Thanks Adam for another great Professor of Rock segment!
I’m a huge, life long fan of ELO and Jeff Lynne, and this is one of my favorite songs. I remember playing it right after my daughter was born, singing along to it for her and she loved it! To this day, when I hear the line, “Hey you with the pretty face, welcome to the human race”, it brings me back to that memory. Thank you, Jeff Lynne, ELO, and to you, Adam, for showcasing such a great song!❤❤❤
Just discovered your channel. I'm 55 and love a range of music from the blues to the brit pop and Holst to Apollo 440. I love sitting down with a bottle of red wine and listening to you describe the history of some of the classics.THANKS. P.S. You've got a good ear!
I would LOVE to see more ELO content! I found them in the mid-90s, when in college I went on a huge 70's music educational odyssey, with my friends asking me who the heck that band was. My kids seemed to ignore me when I played ELO, until Guardians of the Galaxy 2, which made Mr. Blue Sky one of their favorites. Now it's their biggest request on every drive, and they know all the words.
ELO is one of my very favorite bands. I discovered them as a kid with "A New World Record". With hits like Telephone Line, Do Ya and Livin' Thing, amongst others, it would be great if you did a piece on this album.
I’m amazed that every time Mr Blue Sky pops up on my playlist or radio it always brings a smile to my face and I suddenly feel a hell of a lot better, no matter how my day is going 😀
I was so obsessed with ELO in the ‘70’s, I had all of their US released albums. Mr. Blue Sky always lifts my spirits! Even my Chihuahua loves to sing along!
ELO is my favorite band of all time (Depeche Mode 2nd, Toto 3rd, Tears for Fears 4th). It just so happens that I was dealing with my own version of depression as a teen back in the late 70's due to a very dysfunctional family life. I bought the "Out of the Blue" LP and it was when I listened to Mr. Blue Sky that I realized that there was hope for a better future (than the one I was dealing with at that time). I have always credited Jeff Lynne for saving my life and giving me that hope back then. To this day, I will dance to that song no matter where I am and my mood is always gets better after I listen to it. Another song from ELO that does that for me is "All Over The World".
Not only is this my favorite ELO song, this is one of my favorite 70s song. I think of this song whenever I experience blue skies. It's a great feeling, and Jeff nailed it with this one. His band was at their peak at this time. Incredibly good musicians and great arrangements. I want to request that you do a video on Next train to London. It's a killer tune too
@@Beachgirl1Probably because it was considered by many “rock purists” in the day as being a “disco-ish” song. In fact, the album LTTL appears on, “Discovery,” was even called by its critics “Disco-Very.” 😂
he is absolutely a genius writer and producer. For many years he was overlooked but in the past 10 years he is finally getting his due praise. This was a fun watch......thank you!!!
I love everything I’ve ever heard from ELO. I had "Can’t Get It Out of My Head" on 45! Couldn’t wait till I had enough money to buy the album. One thing is certain, you can’t sit still when "Mr Blue Sky" is playing. I want to get up and move just like Groot in the opening scenes of Guardians of the Galaxy II! It is sooooo upbeat! Thanks Professor. Any ELO song anytime is alright with me.
That's what i love about Adam's channel....I can read the description and, literally, quote the song name. :) I love that song. Good one Adam...that actually lifted my spirits a little today.
LOVE Mr. Blue Sky! And the next generation will too. My nearly 16 yo is a founder of his h.s. rock band and they just performed this song for their latest concert. He played lead guitar and sang with the keyboardist. They even had a trombone player join in and it was amazing!
My favourite song of all time from my favourite band of all time. Reminds me of walking home from junior school in a dark overcast day in early 1978 at a time when this was in the charts. Great sing-a-long song to sing in the bath while wallowing in the suds. One of a very few songs that I know every word of without much effort. Glorious 😎🤤☀
First time I've seen this band recognized on social media EVER! THANK YOU ❤ I'm 57, and am a fan since the 5th grade. I also play different instruments from a young age and was exposed to MANY different genres of music (Thank you God 🙏) and this band mesmerized me from that young age. I know every song by heart 💜 They are the Greatest unsung heroes of Rock and Roll. In the same class as The Beatles, Queen, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. Only I didn't "meet The Beatles until 7th grade and the others I grew to love in highschool. So I realize now that they were truly number 1 for me. Jeff Lynn was genius ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Besides being a legendary musician and producer, he is very humble and never developed a big ego like some other artist. When George Harrison died, Jeff Lynne became a mentor to Harrison's son. 😀❤❤
Oh yes! I remember listening to a midi of this classical song a lot in the late nineties (at the age of 12). A few years later I got interested in ELO music and I think it took almost a decade after that that I discovered ELO actually had a version of that song. Felt like a dreamed combination of two favourites!
I feel ELO never gets old because they put so much time into production. I've heard critics call them overproduced, however, in my eyes, that makes them future-proof because every time you listen you discover another layer of complexity. Jeff Lynne truly is a genius. Please, Professor, an entire series on Jeff Lynne and ELO!
This album was pure genius! I bought my copy when I was 16, and thought it was magical. Thank you for refreshing my memory, as my album was stolen by my roommate. The album was very ahead of it's time. Bless you, brother!
“Please turn me over” ending side A, is just AWESOME!! So the “villain” Mr. Night, so is choir, so is the Rainy Day insert so is everything about this song & album! E.L.O. & Jeff Lynne just rules! Thanks for rehashing this one Prof!! (won’t be able to get it out of my head today that’s for sure!🤘)
The second I heard the clip I knew it was Mr Blue sky. Jeff Lynn is a genius. He’s made some of the most incredible music I’ve ever heard. Thank you Jeff. Thanks professor for your channel
Jeff Lynne is a rare genius...in the same mold as a Brian Wilson or Tom Scholz and maybe even Lennon/McCartney. Very cool song. I really love ELO. Cheers from Ottawa, Canada🍁
I love this song. The entire album was my go-to after my fiancé dumped me and I felt so alone. It lifted me up and gave me strength to get past the trauma, so I’ll always be grateful for Jeff Lynne.
As soon as I read the title of this video, I knew exactly who and which song this video was about. Saw ELO in concert a couple times. Very good concert.
Thanks Adam for doing a show on one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE SONGS, Mr Blue Skies! The first time I heard the song, I was a FLOORED 10 yr old! And then I saw Xanadu in the movie theater and asked my dad if the songs were by the same guy. He tells me a simple “Yup”. So, my 10 yr old self stars to hunt down who the band was in the movie (didn’t know that if I watched the credits of the movie, it would’ve answered my question and would end my quest… live and learn!) ELO has been a favorite sound ever since. Jeff Lynn is a leader to be followed IMO! I think it was with his musical help that made The Traveling Willburys such a great album (in addition to George Harrison and Tom Petty) but, I gotta tell ya. Whenever Mr Blue Skies comes on my phone (cuz I’m usually listening to music on my phone. Thank you Steve Jobs) I stop whatever I’m doing to ENJOY the song. Talk about an uplifting song, GREAT SONG!
I love ELO and find it to be a massively creative and unique band. Out of the Blue was my first vinyl album I bought as a kid in the 1970s. I was hypnotized by the colorful spaceship. Their vocal harmonies can only be touched by Queen.
The titans of music Jeff Lynne has contributed to are amazing, ex Beatles etc, there are way too many to mention. As a kid, their album art work always fascinated me, what a talented man he is. 👍
This is my son's birth song! Born on July 25th, 21 days late, we sang it to him many times. It was a joyous time then and he is still a wonderful beautiful person in our life. Our Mr. Blue Sky! 😍💕
When everyone else was getting their disco shoes on, I was listening to ELO, Grand Funk Railroad, and even the Urban Cowboy soundtrack. I adore Jeff Lynne. His music is just brilliant, and he's been maybe an even better producer. Thank you for your continued amazing work. You are so very good, I expect to see you on TV anytime now. Well done.
Thank you so much for a fantastic video about Mister Blue Sky and a trip down memory lane. 🤩🤩 For me "Discovery" and "Time" are the musical peaks in my youth especially the tracks "Twilight " , "21. Century Man* , " Horace Wimp" and of course "Mr. Blue Sky ". I would love it if you made an episode about those two albums.
I received Out of the Blue for Christmas in 1977. Mr. Blue Sky was my favorite from that album. I was a senior and our high school in Indiana had a radio station. As one of the DJ's I played this song from my personal LP as a 45 had not yet been released in January 1978.
I feel like over the years, ELO has become underrated. I remember my little sister laughing at Telephone Line and me saying something like, "Listen, kid, this song is a masterpiece." The younger generations just don't appreciate their brilliance.
I think it’s more that they don’t understand Jeff Lynne’s genius, or the music of the 70’s in general, which keeps them from really HEARING it. I made sure my kids all heard and understood the music of my generation, that’s why they have such an eclectic taste in music. They approach music the same way I always have, I don’t care what genre or what era it was created in if I like it I like it.
I guess we're dating ourselves, but as DJ, I can say affirmatively that this generation is completely tone deaf. As Donald Fagan would probably say, "What passes for music I can't understand"!
@ChuckWortman I've been trying to come to terms with age lately, but I have to say I would rather be the age I am now than my kids' ages. Then again, our parents probably thought _we_ were tone deaf, too.
ELO's "Twilight" is another awesome track from them. The whole "Time" album is an absolute masterpiece that should be recognized as one of the greatest ever produced. It is just too bad it was released in the shadow of Xanadu.
That was my introduction into ELO. I was in High School at the time. So for me, The Time album will always be my favorite. Ticket to the moon is my favorite track on the album.
Incredible song. I remember being gobsmacked when I first heard it. Jeff Lynne somehow managed to meld together the 60s, the 70s and the burgeoning 80s in a single song.
Double album, Out of the blue, I bought it when it came out in 1977, Playd it so many times with my Technics stereo that my parents eventually also liked it. "In the jungle" cranked up to eleven with some decent 12" woofers, made me and my cousin dance like hell. (14-15 year old boys). A New World Record, was my first experience with ELO. 13 year old me really liked it.
This song means so much to me , it reminds of glorious summers playing in the garden, local parks or away on holiday when I was young kid. It always seem to be on the radio during that time. Strange thing is those memories are from the summers of 1975,1976 and 1977. I was staggered to recently discover it was not released until 1978. I guess it just such a happy song my young mind linked it so closely to happy times that the song became part of them. Even knowing it was not around during 75,76,77 It still reminds me of those summers and yes even hearing it being played on the radio back then, Or maybe I'm a time traveller .😀
I had this LP on 8-track cassette playing in my Toyota Celica almost constantly while I lived in Manhattan Beach in the late 70s and I remember always anticipating Mr. Blue Sky to come on so I could crank up the volume even louder than normal. The whole album is a great listen but that was always the highlight and often would brighten my day. Or night. Whenever it came on it was always uplifting and still is.
One of my favorite albums of all times. Just yesterday I sat and listened to it from beginning to end as I usually do. I used to wake up and listen to "Mr Blue Sky" every morning. That album is a masterpiece from beginning to end there's not a bad song on it in my opinion
I have been an EPIC ELO fan since the 70's, know every song on every album and I NEVER knew that the last few notes on Mr Blue Sky was "turn me over"!!
Another one ELO's really buoyant songs is Hold On Tight. And then my favorite song by them is All Over the World for the Xanadu soundtrack. Very fortunately got to see Jeff Lynne's ELO perform live in 2019 and it was one of the highlights of my life. Just hearing that amazing music along with an enthusiastic crowd all singing along - you can't beat it.
I woke up this morning to a beautiful blue sky and felt like listening to Mr blue sky so looked it up on you tube. Played the BBC live version and then found this. Was absolutely delighted to hear that it was recorded in Munich because I woke up in Munich today staying with dear friends. I was also recently in Switzerland and experienced one of those days when the sun shines on the mountains and there is not a cloud in the sky. When the uk rejoins the EU there will be a huge concert like live aid and I hope that Geoff is willing and able to open with Mr blue sky
I totally love this song. I still listen to it all the way through, even though I don't listen to much music from that era. And no I NEVER KNEW the end of the song was the words "Please Turn Me Over". That is SO brilliant!
My brother and I come from a musical family. Our father at one point in his life was a music educator and he brought home Sparky's Magic Piano and Rusty in Orchestraville and we were amazed at the wonderful musical story. Those two records were special to us and we listened to them often but with great care. I think my brother still has our copies. He's a record collector and runs his own internet radio station called Rockin Radio. He's very much like you in that he plays the Best Rock n Roll you never heard.
Went to Edinburgh in 2018 to the tattoo with my wife and her sister, closing track was Mr Blue Sky it was an awesome surprise. Week later in Toronto went to see Jeff Lynne Elo with my wife and her brother had been a fan since I bought my first single Shine a Little Love in 70s ...was an amazing show my brother in law and I sang along to every song word for word best night ever!
Dear Professor, thanks again for another fantastic episode; this time, an episode telling the story behind one of my all time favorite SONGS (definitely in the top 10) from one of my all time favorite BANDS (definitely in the top 5)! And if you can get an interview with the great Jeff Lynne, you will obviously give a tremendous thrill to many of your hundreds of thousands subscribers (and others) and make them very, very happy!!! Good luck on this important project!!! 😊💪🙏
ELO were constantly on the radio in what seemed like a endless trail of magnificent, shimmering radio hits in the mid 70s. I loved all those songs though I was too young to know who created them. Just as I hit my teens my Mom bought me my very first album in 1979, & it happened to be ELO's latest album Discovery - I played the grooves off that album. I became a lifelong super fan ever since. Jeff was the main conductor of much of the music that soundtracked my life.
Professor, I thank you SO much discussing anything to do with Jeff Lynne and or the Electric Light Orchestra! I'm an almost 60 year old kid from Houston, and since mid 1970, JL/ELO have been my favorite band. Yep, I'm a month away from being 60 and I STILL have a favorite band from youth 'til now. I saw the Out of the Blue concert and the Time concert in Houston's Summit arena, that is now a mega church, and I saw JL's ELO at the Toyota Center in '18 with my wife and two adult daughters. EVERYONE at all concerts were having the best time, and I remember both '70s concerts, people were screaming "ROCK AND ROLL" at the top of their lungs as we were all exiting. Sadly, you ask 99.999% of people, and they will not know who Jeff Lynne is. He's never been push in the limelight, even though his influence is SO great in the rock/pop-rock era. Thanks again, Professor, and keep it coming!!!
ELO and Jeff Lynn are some of the most talented musicians that have emerged out of the Rock era. Jeff is also one of the most creative and technically competent producers of our generation.
I absolutely love this album! Jungle was always one of my favorite songs on this album -it was so fun and magical, imagining frolicking and dancing with the animals. Mr Blue Sky is always a blast of happiness! And Sweet Talking Woman was amazing too. Thank you for covering this song and the album!! ✌🏼💖
I agree. I love this album, although it’s certainly not appreciated by the general public. Twilight, Ticket to the Moon, The Way Life’s Meant to Be, The Lights Go Down, Rock ‘N’Roll is King - just to name a few.
Poll: What is your pick for the most UPLIFTING song of the rock era? One that always raises your spirits?
I Can See Clearly Now, Johnny Nash
To The Runner. from Olias of Sunhillow
Buddy Holly - Everyday
George Harrison - Blow Away
Manfred Mann - Mighty Quinn
Van Morrison - Everyone
Blue October - Jump Rope
It's not considered Rock but I like "don't worry, be happy"
"I Won’t Back Down" Tom Petty

What an awesome story! You have your very own little Mr. Blue Sky!
Very touching story. Thank you for sharing.
You r very lucky
That is a lovely story.
Awww!!! Thank you for that lovely story!
ELO, one of the most underrated bands of all time. Whatever praise we give them, they deserve even more.
Not by me I’ve been listening for decades and still can’t get enough
Yes. "The Children of the Beatles". McCartney named them so. Can't argue with that.
This year my playlist at work has included, 21st Century Man, Rain Is Falling, Don’t Walk Away, Confusion, Xanadu. 😊
John Lennon said that if the Beatles had stayed together they would have become ELO.
So true!!
When you get invited to join Dylan, Harrison, Petty and Orbison to form a super band you’ve definitely got the respect of your peers, even if the general public doesn’t know who you are anymore. He’s definitely a genuine musical genius and I never get tired of his music
So true. Such a great supergroup.
He wasn't invited. Jeff and Harrison did inviting. Fantastic group.
@@jamescobb420 the funny thing is that The Wilburys did more for Tom Petty's career than the others because that's how he met Jeff Lynne, who revitalized Tom's songwriting and music.
Lynn put it together, not the other way around.
The Wilburys are the best supergroup ever.
Awesome!
❤❤❤❤❤❤
😍
Wow! 🥇Excellent decision, my friend!!
Mr Blue Sky is a masterpiece of Pop Rock.
I agree!
@@ProfessorofRockTwo things have always struck me about what has always been one of my favourite songs. It’s breathless pace ( in truth too fast to dance to) and the subtle variations in the chord progressions. There’s a great undertow in the coda, too: the final chord is almost impossibly imposing..
It’s a true classic.
I concur.
Oops, you wrote that wrong. It's THE masterpiece...
All of those and more!! The list is always super long when I start counting my favorite ELO songs.
:D But honestly, they were more diverse than that.
the whale/showdown/10538 overture/nightrider/poker/queen of the hours/daybreaker/kuiama/strange magic/rockaria/down home town/turn to stone/confusion/four little diamonds....
Time was my favorite album from ELO.
My favorite ELO song is "Strange Magic."
Working an ELO show as a stagehand was as magical as you can imagine.
I bet you have wonderful stories
It's hard to imagine Jeff Lynne in a funk and unable to write. Everything he's written sounds effortless.
Definitely one of the greatest out there.
A lot easier when you steal from your bandmates and not give them credit.
And perfect always!

Telephone Line is kind of sad. Beautiful but sad.
My second favorite ELO album after "Out of The Blue".
The album cover is cool too.
N amazing record and Tim by ELO is that way for me too my favorite album ever
My favorite ELO album!
Jeff Lynne should probably be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame individually. for all of the songwriting and producing he's done for others, added to the fact that there wouldn't have been a Traveling Wilburys without his work in putting it together. He's already in with ELO, of course.
Of course I agree. He's a genius. A geniuses genius! What's your favorite production by him?
Full Moon Fever, for Tom Petty. @@ProfessorofRock
@@ProfessorofRockmine is Out of the Blue.
I would love that to happen. So many are missing out on Lynne’s talent.
Same here.
It's so good even Paul McCartney said he wished he'd written it
This was my youngest daughter's fave song as a child. I remember one spring, it was cold and rainy everyday, so we said we'd play it in the car every morning until the sun came out again. She had it as her phone alarm until the day she graduated high school. What a way to start the day!
I need to set this as my alarm.
I've had it as my alarm in the past. My current ring tone is the opening of "Here Is The News" from the "Time" album.
Awesome idea!!
As a kid I also knew the Sparky's magic talking piano story and when I bought the Out of the Blue album and played Mr Blue Sky I always thought of Sparky. Amazing that you now tell me Sparky's Magic Piano was the inspiration for that for that sound on the record.
Always been my favorite band , since the very first album No Answer.. Lynne is a genius..ELO..
Jeff Lynn is a super musician, and brings such great joy to many. The song, Mr. Blue Sky, always gives me a surge of happy 😊 and the kids LOVE to sing-a-long with us.
Same here! My kids love it. When did they discover it? Did you show them?
@@ProfessorofRock, I did introduce them to it :)
Back when our oldest (now 12) was only 2 or 3. It's a song on my play lists, and in my CD collection, and so it often gets played on road trips! 🚘 which it is a perfect song for.

The entire concerto for a rainy day is nothing short of brilliant and Mr. Blue sky simply and wonderfully plays its role in that set.
Exactly. One of the best ever!
When you get invited to join Dylan, Harrison, Petty and Orbison to form a super band you’ve definitely got the respect of your peers, even if the general public doesn’t know who you are anymore. He’s definitely a genuine musical genius and I never get tired of his music.😊
ELO is in my top 5 all time favorites. I passed that love along to my daughter
Livin’ Thing is one of my favorites from them!
turn to stone, hold on tight, shine a little love, etc. so many great songs by ELO.

Love ELO!
Very underrated band.
Jeff Lynne truly was a creative genius. Later became an accomplished producer.
Mr. Blue Sky is definitely a happy song 🎵
Thanks Professor!
2 great classic episodes so far this week!
Minor correction: Jeff Lynne truly IS a creative genius. Still with us you know 🙂
Yes, they've been underrated for decades.
@@davebellamy4867Apparently, the latest 2019 album release hit #1 in UK albums.
They were very prolific, even more so for Jeff Lynne.
What is the rating system by which you and other lemmings declare a band underrated? Answer, there is no rating system to determine a bands ratings.
"Jeff Lynne(ELO) is all of the harvest that The Beatles left sown in their path. But he is the best seed and the best fruit. There is not and will never be another one. Neither more beautiful nor more perfect."
Jeff Lynnes voice never seems to age. In fact, I'd argue it's gotten better each year.
im 18, found this band last year and loved them since. my faves used to be telephone line and strange magic but discovered shangri-la and nightrider recently and they r so good. i wish their other tracks than mr blue sky were more famous tho i cant deny that its the one that introduced me to the band, they really are that great :]
Jeff is a genius! I'm so glad that you're shining the light on his music, Adam! He deserves the recognition!
I also discovered the song through Guardians of the Galaxy!
I feel the same way.
I was so obsessed with ELO in the ‘70’s, I had all of their US released albums. Mr. Blue Sky always lifts my spirits! Even my Chihuahua loves to sing along!

Thanks Jill!
I have always loved him.
That's some great variety!

LOVE Mr.
It is a really happy one.
Jeff Lynne is genius! PERIODT!!
To this day, fifty years later, ELO's cover of "In the Hall of The Mountain King" never fails to get my blood pumping!!
Oh yes! I remember listening to a midi of this classical song a lot in the late nineties (at the age of 12). A few years later I got interested in ELO music and I think it took almost a decade after that that I discovered ELO actually had a version of that song. Felt like a dreamed combination of two favourites!
God I loved them. Brings back happy memories of my young. Happy carefree days. Nothing likeit nowadays.
All Over the World is still one of my favorite songs to this day. It is so upbeat and energetic.

I would love it if you made an episode about those two albums.
They’re really great.
That’s my favorite three albums too Out of the Blue, Discovery and Time. I could just play all three of them over and over again.
I received Out of the Blue for Christmas in 1977. Mr. Blue Sky was my favorite from that album. I was a senior and our high school in Indiana had a radio station. As one of the DJ's I played this song from my personal LP as a 45 had not yet been released in January 1978.
This has got to be one of my favorite episodes. I love ELO.
@@malcolmr3 I did the same with my kids.
It is much deeper than that.
A great song.
I think Time is the best synthpop album ever recorded.
Incredible song. I remember being gobsmacked when I first heard it. Jeff Lynne somehow managed to meld together the 60s, the 70s and the burgeoning 80s in a single song.
Twilight was the first album I bought with my own money. Those were the days... :)
Jeff Lynne. Now that’s a real hero!!! He’s a FANTASTIC singer/songwriter, and an inspiration for young artists out there.
"Shine a Little Love" is another compelling example of ELO's upbeat rock.

Although many “rock purists” in the day considered Shine a Little Love to be more of a disco song than a rock song.
@@aryehpeter1391It’s from the album Disco-very. Richard Tandy came up with that pun.

The album "Time" blew me away as a preteen. Mr. Lynne is so talented. Hope to see more on the channel about him.
I agree. I love this album, although it’s certainly not appreciated by the general public. Twilight, Ticket to the Moon, The Way Life’s Meant to Be, The Lights Go Down, Rock ‘N’Roll is King - just to name a few.
@@aryehpeter1391 Ticket to the moon will be played at my funeral 🙂
@@MrBratalis99 May you live a long, happy and healthy life until this meaningful song will be played at that future event per your request! 🙏
@@aryehpeter1391 Thank you very much. Same to you.
