It’s interesting that the lead guitar on that song was played by Larry Knechtel, who was actually the bass and keyboard player, not the band’s guitarist. Larry said in an interview some years before his passing that he volunteered to give the guitar part a shot when the guitarist was having a problem laying down the track due to nervousness in the studio. Since Larry was primarily a studio musician both before and after Bread, he was totally comfortable when the tape machine was running and sailed through the take. I was at the 25th Anniversary concert tour in Manila and they told the story of "guitar man". I believe they also said Larry received a Grammy for the Bridge Over Troubled Water arrangement. Great concert that my wife and I talk about often. Although Bread toured Asia a lot, that was the first time they had ever been to the Philippines.

I'm right there with you. I refused to listen to Bread, then marriage happened. My wife's favorite band- Bread. Now, I'm the one that turns the radio up when "If" or "Mother Freedom" comes on.. Thanks, as always, Prof.
One of my favorite Wonder Years episodes showed Winnie give Kevin a Bread album. Teenage Kevin: "I love it!" Adult Kevin: "I hated it." 😂 But he did clarify that he loved getting a gift from her, regardless of what it was.
I love David Gates. His music just made you feel at an even deeper level. Bread was amazing. Growing up in the 60’s and 70’s with such amazing music was a true blessing.
I Want to Make It with You and If ruled my summer, along with The Carpenters Close to You and We've Only Just Begun. I was a life guard and the beach was magic before I was drafted that fall and Vietnam intruded into my illusion (or did I find that illusions are the truth).
I was driving down the road about a month after my Dad had passed away, when the DJ introduced a song written and performed by David Gates. He said the song was written by DG aboout has dad after had had passed away. He began to play "Everything I Own." I drove down the road, crying so hard that I could nearly see to drive. But there was also a healing in that song, just knowing that someone else not only understood the way I felt, but they felt the same way I did.
Everything I Own. I have heard David Gates wrote it about his father. Always loved the song. After losing my own Dad, and other family members, the song beautifully breaks my heart everytime i hear it.
On his album when they were called "The Remington's" ......yup.... Lots of good songs on the "Remington's" album....bluer than blue....blue frontier.....love you with my eyes closed......long time ago
The song, "Diary" always made my heart hurt. At that first lyric, "I found your diary underneath a tree..." I'd yell at the radio, "Put it back! Don't read it!" Sigh, but then the poor dude was going to find out eventually.
You are just trying to make me cry. These songs feel like the soundtrack of my life. It's not just Bread but the whole 70s am radio playing in my memory. I just hate getting old.
Getting old is inevitable - not nice, but beats the alternative - what is really terrible is the mediocrity of the times we live in. Furthermore, where did the music go????😢
David Gates is as much of a genius as Brian Wilson. He wrote and sung some of the most beautiful songs of the '70s. In addition to the great hits you mentioned, let's not forget "Sweet Surrender" and "Guitar Man". Those songs are stellar, especially with the guitar outro on the latter. I have great memories of hearing those unique tunes in the '70s and now my kids joke around whenever Bread comes on the radio, because whenever the kids as babies wouldn't fall asleep, we'd jump in the car and drive around to the soothing sounds of Bread--and it always did the trick! Thanks! - Dave
I just want to second this. Sweet Surrender is my absolute favourite Bread song, with Guitar Man a close second. I love the way the vocals and guitar interweave with each other on the latter - what a true masterpiece of a recording!
I had the great pleasure to sit down with a very retired David Gates in 2016, and ask him questions about some of his songs, and about his arranging. He was very gently and kind. Those moments meant a lot to me, just as his songs and voice do. He's in his 80s now, and he enjoys his privacy.
I never cared for them until really listening to their record that my Dad had. David has such an easy to listen to voice. It is crazy how getting older can change your outlook on musicians. Rock on Brother! Hope you have a great day!
Im 61 miss the 70s hearing bread on the radio with cassy casim eagles america doobies best of times and i miss them these kids today don't have a clue how nice it was back then the goodby girl is my favorite but there all great
Being a young adult woman in the early 70’s I really loved that group! I still listen to them occasionally. Most of their songs are just so soothing! Thank you professor for highlighting them!
I was riding my motorcycle over to a friend’s house when I was 19 and was listening to “If”, by Bread. Something just struck me and it dawned on me that this song was the earliest recollection I had of music. I could hear the song in my mind and my mom was listening to it while working around the house. I mentioned that to her one day and she said she use to listen to them while doing her house work. We were stationed in Germany at the time and I was about 3. To this day it is one of the most comforting songs in my play list.
As a musician, there were voices thru out my musical history that just simply rose above. Karen Carpenter, Allyson Krauss, Christopher Cross... and DAVID GATES.
I was in college in Cali and in the student hall a big sign saying, BREAD…playing her Friday night. I’d never heard of them! So I did some research and fell in love with them! I close my eyes and there I am…young, alive with possibility…those were the days🎉Thanks Professor 💜
I'm 65 and have enjoyed David Gates and BREAD from the beginning and will forever. His songwriting, delivery and guitar playing is pure eargasmic delight. My favorite album is "Anthology of Bread". So glad his life is playing out as he wished it to...Best Wishes David, and Thank you for your music...such a warm and happy part of my life...and still is.
I loved BREAD, I was a young mom, two kids......my husband was in the Navy on a carrier for years and I was so missing him. BREAD held me together those years and I will never ever forget their music. No one better since. They just slide into a time period that was chaotic on this planet with this beautiful music. My husband died recently after 60+ years of marriage. I still listen to Bread to bring back beloved memories. Thanks for this, stumbled on it as I'm having my morning coffee...without him. I want to make it with you...THANKS for this, I needed it on another sad morning.
Bread toured back in 1996-97 as well, we saw them at Six Flags over Texas that summer, absolutely magical. David & Jimmy's voices still soared effortlessly harmonizing all of their old classics. Larry's slide on Guitar man was out of this world & the Dallas string section that accompanied that night gave the whole performance a studio quality shine that made you realize this was something special. David came to Tahlequah, Okla back in the early 2000's on a tour of his own, played 2 nights, the second being an addition he made the day before due to some local flooding we had as I recall. He was/is like that I think... a songwriter that wanted nothing less than to share his music & make this world a better place one song at a time. Thanks David, for all the music & magic along the way.
@@ProfessorofRock I saw him in the very small room at Foxwoods in '04 and then the larger stage in '06. Close friends of mine who call themselves Breadheads, came and it was a wonderful night but bittersweet because Mike and Jimmy had passed.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Sadly Jimmy, Mike, and Larry have passed only Robb and David are left and David retired a while back. He just turned 83 on December 11th.
Everything I own he wrote for his dad, who passed away while David was on tour. It is really beautiful and you can tell it really comes from the heart ❤️
You know, David wrote "Everything I Own" about his father, after his death. It is hard to listen to the song without crying. Aubrey might be the prettiest melody I have every heard. What a great ballad writer.
imho 'Everything I Own' is one of the most finely crafted songs every recorded. With its subtly different structured 2nd verse. Its heart wrenching middle 8 right thru the final chorus. With its full 3-part harmony (with an additional closing line. Perfection. I played my 1st paying gig on 20 December 1974. I was15 years old. The first song we played, kicking off my nearly 49-year career in the music biz??? Mother Freedom. Thank you POR for this thoughtful tribute to David Gates. An American treasure. RNB
Thanks, Professor! I always loved the lyrics of 'Diary' as I think we all have had the pain of loving someone who doesn't have the same feelings for you. That heart breaking realization that she loves someone else always gets me.
As a young man during that period I thought Led Zeppelin would woo females into my car but it was the purchase of the Bread 8 track that did it. Thank you David Gates for the great music and memories.
I have loved Bread’s music since the beginning. I am 62 years old now and last year, on my birthday, my wife got me the complete set of Bread’s catalog on cd. I have worn those puppies out, reliving that authentic sound and all the special memories that go with them! Thanks for the segment!!
What a voice! I've been a big Bread and David Gates fan since my early childhood. Everything I Own is one of my all-time favorite songs. I was surprised to find out it was about his father. Always thought it was about a woman. Either way, it's a powerful, emotional song. It ties Lost Without Your Love for my #1 Bread song.
I have been a “Breadhead” for nearly 50 years. To this day, I play many of the albums back-to-back. All tracks. To me there are no tracks I skip. Thank you David Gates! And thank you Professor of Rock for shining a light on a great artist and band.
Dude! Professor! Your bread puns will never get stale. They will never go crusty. And the "millions of bread lovers all around the world" is another great pun. In case you didn't know (or your viewers) Every Thing I Own was written for the death of his father. I still cry every time I listen to it.
Thanks, Professor, for sharing the bio of David's residences. After I departed to Northern California's Redding from LA Metro in 1976, David moved to Fall River Mills east of Redding to build his cattle empire. Then, after probably discovering the intense difficulty of raising cattle, he relocated to San Diego. He then discovered Mount Vernon, Washington, in 2016, the same community I chose in 2023 to retire. His home is only two miles from mine. It's nice to have David and his wife Jo as neighbors. Perhaps we'll meet-up one day at the Skagit County Food Co-op in Old Town Mount Vernon.
A few days after Covid took my girlfriend in 2021, I was driving around town running errands, and Everything I Own came on the radio. I broke down emotionally and had to pull over to the side of the road. Not many songs have had that effect on me, but that song that I used to dismiss as kind of sappy when I was a kid shook me to my core in my late 50s on that day. Over two years later, I can't hear it without thinking about her.
I grew up in the 70's. I still remember listening to these guys, not only on the radio, but on my mother's vinyl.while I am a hard rock/metal musician, and to the dissapointment of my guys, I still listen to them if they happen to come on
Your mother's 'vinyl' ? Hahahaha man relying on your older relatives for their records for many things, shame you missed the golden ages then from 1964-1973 and no young grasshopper relaying on older relatives for their music isn't the same experience and fabricated memories from infant ages won't work. You GenXers crack me up. Love it Thank you for proving my point more than once
Always love the smooth and intricate sounds that they were known for. Felt easing but also emotionally captivating, really defined the idea of music touching the soul. 70s and 60s were truly the decades for that sound!
Thank you, Professor, for highlighting one of rock's greatest all-around musicians. A singer-songwriter who always delivered in an era of arguably some of the best singer-songwriters of our time. David set the bar, Bread was on another level. Give credit to the other 3 bandmates as well because they were what made that smooth rich sound. David Gates and Bread inspired me to start playing guitar, start a band at 13, and try to write music. Gates and Taylor were my go-to for inspiration.
In case you didn’t know, former Bread members Jimmy Griffin and Rob Royer co-composed along with Fred karlin the song “For all we know" for the movie "Lovers and Other Strangers" where it won best Song in the Academy Awards. The song is originally sung by Larry Merridith in the movie. Richard Carpenter fell in love with song when he watched the movie, so he got the rights for the song for him and his sister to make their own cover. It became a big hit.
Listening to David Gates and Bread or David Gates (solo) never gets old to this day and I do it frequently. Thank you very much for this update on him. My wife and I have been married for 47 years and to hear that he's been married for 64 makes me feel like a rookie! Congratulations on that Mr. & Mrs. Gates and thanks for all of your great music.
I'm with you! Took me a while to appreciate David Gates and Bread. They did open me up to other mellow stuff, like Ambrosia. David Pack has another voice like that. Thanks, Professor!!😎👍
So glad I caught this presentation. Gates music is my favorite. His words has meant so much to my personal life. I listen to his music often. Great musician and song writer.
Knowing the deep relationship you had with your father, all I could think about was the song, Everything I Own, that David wrote about losing his own father in which he confessed that he would give everything to have his father back again. What a song, what a songwriter!
Im 63 years old , i am A singer/songwriter myself i have loved David Gates since im a kid he was one of the songwriters i loved and i modeled my songwriting skills from. I wish i could have seen him or met him never got a chance . I love ballads they are what comes most naturally to me and i feel that most people like the ballads of most of any group . Davids voice is high and clear his pitch is perfect . He is talented on so many levels yet seems to be a humble man . I didnt realize till maybe 15 years ago that “Everything i own “ was written when he lost his father. He was so brilliant that the song could be about a girl or losing his Dad . So as a child i thought it was about a girl. After losing my Dad i understand his words so clearly now
I am glad you did this deep dive on him. I was just a wee lad during that time and I HATED soft rock, but I did have to admire David Gate's voice. I did not think of it as "soothing" but I did think of it as "pure". His was the voice of a beautiful soul who could make you see past the darkness around you. Thank you for reminding me of that!!
I have loved Bread since their beginning and I was one of those fans that was devastated by their breakup. Thank you for reminding your followers of the magic of David Gates' music and this marvelous band.
Oh my goodness, David Gates had the most amazing voice and his songs were so beautiful!!! Karen Carpenter I always thought had the most beautiful voice going. So both of these were my favorites! My favorite song has always been Everything I Own! Thanks for doing this I loved this!!!
I always considered David Gates a poet...for me, "Guitar Man" was a just a gorgeous, timeless ballad. Love this band, and enjoyed this mini doc very much! Kudos, Professor.❤
I was a rocker kid in high school in the early ‘70s, but Bread was one of my secret favorites. They still feature prominently in my playlist. David Gates’ stable marriage comes as no surprise and it’s rare but not unheard of. Look at Pat Benatar and Neal Giraldo - they’re at nearly 40 years together as husband and wife and going strong. Same with the guys from Rush and their wives too.
I was fortunate enough to see Bread in concert in the fall of 1978 when a classmate who had tickets asked me to go with him. I always loved their music, so I was thrilled to get to see and hear them play live. A great memory!
David was a great songwriter and performer. He wrote so many timeless hits still played daily today. If he would tour I would definitely go. Love their songs!
I was born in 1968, and Bread has been and is one of my 3 favorite bands. The theme song to the movie The Goodbye Girl, and The Guitar Man are my favorite songs of Bread.
Wow thanks so much for that flash back, that was awesome. We had If song at our wedding in 1979. That was my favorite. Still married almost 45 years. You really can't beat the music of the 70s❤❤❤
I really enjoyed this one Professor. I saw David Gates (minus Bread) while I was in college in 1976. To this day it’s one of my great concert memories.
Nailed it ! Dave is the King of mellow. He made Cat Stevens sound like Captain Beefheart. The guitar is what sold me though. If not for the guitar I'd have never listened. Everything was there, the vocals and lyrics but I'm a music guy. As a kid it was one of the few what we called sissy music bands that were not sissy music musicians. There is a half dozen or so songs that still really bring a great feeling over me. The power, no politics, no demands, no hate, real solid talent, just emotions set to music.
“Everything I Own” makes me weep uncontrollably every time I hear it. Thank you for sharing this Professor!!!! Bread has such beautiful songs, soul-stirring lyrics.
Everyone has someone in their life they would give Everything They Owned, to have them back again. It is such a beautiful and powerful song. As a teen I just liked the melody and instrumentation, now that I'm older it really hits me.
Loved your excellently told tale of "Bread" my friend, you really brought the highlights out, of Bread & David Gates musical gift to the world 🌎. Im 60 this year & Bread was a favorite of mine, my lovely late wife, and my Sister as well !
Thank you for shining the spotlight on David Gates and Bread! To all the younger fans of POR take a day you are feeling mellow or want to, give a listen to David Gates music, you wouldn't believe all the songs you heard but never knew was him. Growing up in the AM only radio days Bread was a staple, nothing else like that sound playing on the radio coming from my parents room in the late evening. Great episode professor.
Yes! David is from Tulsa, and I think he still lives there. Do you listen to the Flaming Lips? I think they are from Tulsa, also. A friend of mine used to attend their annual "zombie march" around halloween. Lot's of musical talent comes from Oklahoma!
I stole all of my dad's vinyl except his Bread albums. 79 years old now and he STILL has those. They haven't seen a needle since the early '80s but won't let them go.

One of my favorite Wonder Years episodes showed Winnie give Kevin a Bread album.
Teenage Kevin: "I love it!"
Adult Kevin: "I hated it." 😂
But he did clarify that he loved getting a gift from her, regardless of what it was.
Good job explaining an interesting story, but it would be torture to listen to him, at least to me.
I love David Gates. His music just made you feel at an even deeper level. Bread was amazing. Growing up in the 60’s and 70’s with such amazing music was a true blessing.
Late 60s early 70s had so many amazing songs worth listening to.
We were soooo lucky to be there for a musical renaissance like no other before or since.
I Want to Make It with You and If ruled my summer, along with The Carpenters Close to You and We've Only Just Begun. I was a life guard and the beach was magic before I was drafted that fall and Vietnam intruded into my illusion (or did I find that illusions are the truth).
I'll be 64 at the end of the month, and Bread will always be one of my favorites.
Same for me...I am 64. Bread was one of my favorites.
Happy Belated to both of you. 🎉🎂🥳
I still can't listen to that song anymore.
I just read that on Wikipedia, it is about his father. Such a beautiful song. I still have the 45 single of it.
His songs used to make me cry. I was a little kid in those days. He really is a phenomenal singer. Beautiful voice.
The song, "Diary" always made my heart hurt. At that first lyric, "I found your diary underneath a tree..." I'd yell at the radio, "Put it back! Don't read it!"
Sigh, but then the poor dude was going to find out eventually.
He's that good!
He and Karen Carpenter have voices like heaven.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980truer words...❤❤ Karen
You are just trying to make me cry. These songs feel like the soundtrack of my life. It's not just Bread but the whole 70s am radio playing in my memory. I just hate getting old.
Getting old is inevitable - not nice, but beats the alternative - what is really terrible is the mediocrity of the times we live in. Furthermore, where did the music go????😢
just listen to the music and dream kiddo
Yup born in 57 and grew up on this Music
Just embrace the memories of that era you were around to experience. The best music and automobiles . It was the last era of the American Experience.
Yes…love the BeeGees too!
Sweet Surrender? I only know John Denver's
1964 "Popsicles and Icicles" written by Mr Gates.
I had the great pleasure to sit down with a very retired David Gates in 2016, and ask him questions about some of his songs, and about his arranging. He was very gently and kind. Those moments meant a lot to me, just as his songs and voice do. He's in his 80s now, and he enjoys his privacy.
David was the best musician to ever come out of Oklahoma.
I never cared for them until really listening to their record that my Dad had. David has such an easy to listen to voice. It is crazy how getting older can change your outlook on musicians. Rock on Brother! Hope you have a great day!
Well said!
As we get older, we regret some of our opinions we used to have, especially about music.
I can’t remember exactly when it was but the moment I heard Bread I fell in love with the music and David’s voice!
I was suuuuper late to the Neil Diamond party. Nothing could be more uncool as a young teen. But somehow I got the bug about 5 years ago.

Being a young adult woman in the early 70’s I really loved that group! I still listen to them occasionally. Most of their songs are just so soothing! Thank you professor for highlighting them!
Guitar Man has always been one of my all time favorite songs.
David Gates voice is like the most soothing voice ever!! Not ashamed to say it...but I loved Bread!! One of the best soft rock bands ever....
What year was this?
As a musician, there were voices thru out my musical history that just simply rose above. Karen Carpenter, Allyson Krauss, Christopher Cross... and DAVID GATES.
Agreed!
Disagreed!
I agree with every one ☺️
Alison Krauss and Union Station were great together.
I was in college in Cali and in the student hall a big sign saying, BREAD…playing her Friday night. I’d never heard of them! So I did some research and fell in love with them! I close my eyes and there I am…young, alive with possibility…those were the days🎉Thanks Professor 💜
What did they play at the show?
Can’t remember but they became a part of the soundtrack of my life.
Beautiful
May God shower you with His peace and grace. So sorry for your loss.
Jeeez. What a beautiful, well-written and constructed celebration of a time, a band, an artist, and a person. So glad you’re here, Professor!
THanks!
"Everything I Own" still stirs my soul.
It's such a beautiful composition.
@@ProfessorofRock yes it is, just like your videos.
A classic.
WoW! Would've given my left arm to see that!
@@ProfessorofRock I saw him in the very small room at Foxwoods in '04 and then the larger stage in '06. Close friends of mine who call themselves Breadheads, came and it was a wonderful night but bittersweet because Mike and Jimmy had passed.
I hope they are still touring so I can get to see them someday!

Everything I own he wrote for his dad, who passed away while David was on tour. It is really beautiful and you can tell it really comes from the heart ❤️
Awesome band,I listen to Bread all the time! RIP Mike Botts Jimmy Griffin, and Larry Knechtal.

Mike Botts had a fabulous jazz voice
Absolutely one of the best groups that has ever existed.
My Dad bought their albums. David Gates had such a beautiful voice. I still enjoy listening to Bread.
Amen!
You know, David wrote "Everything I Own" about his father, after his death. It is hard to listen to the song without crying. Aubrey might be the prettiest melody I have every heard. What a great ballad writer.
It Don't Matter To Me. One of my favorite songs from many years ago. This post brought back a lot of memories.
Even at a young age of 4, I fell in love with his soothing voice. 'If' is the song I dedicate to my wife.
imho 'Everything I Own' is one of the most finely crafted songs every recorded.
Such a painful listen! Breaks my heart!
It’s a feeling of helplessness.
Such a beautiful song. About his father...

What a neat little tribute song.
Ha ha! Good ones!
I guess David made enough dough from Bread that he can loaf now. 😊
Egg-xactly! 😂
My girl was taken via suicide… that song does the same to me…. You are not alone in your suffering…
My sister loved Gates and always played his records.
I really appreciate his songs.
Thank you Professor! 🙏🏼
Thanks Barry!
It was my brother's 8 track that introduced me to Bread. It was a surprise, given the rest of his collection was a bit harder, but I loved it!
I grew up in the 70's. I still remember listening to these guys, not only on the radio, but on my mother's vinyl.while I am a hard rock/metal musician, and to the dissapointment of my guys, I still listen to them if they happen to come on
That's awesome!
Me too. Their music provides comfort.
Love it
Thank you for proving my point more than once

Hard for me to listen to them without crying , his songs grab my heart every time
Whenever I hear a Bread song or Karen Carpenter I go back to the early 70s a transistor radio and the my last years of an innocent childhood.❤

Im 63 years old , i am
A singer/songwriter myself i have loved David Gates since im a kid he was one of the songwriters i loved and i modeled my songwriting skills from.

The guitar work is simply stellar.
“Everything I Own” makes me weep uncontrollably every time I hear it. Thank you for sharing this Professor!!!! Bread has such beautiful songs, soul-stirring lyrics.
