I can't get over how gorgeous his makeup is. That is the first thing that drew me in before knowing what this drama is about. Will be watching 🙂👍
Yin Zheng portrays his character perfectly. His costumes, head dress, and makeup is absolutely fabulous. Huang Xiaoming is one of my favorite Chinese actor and I love his character in this drama. This era has always captivated me. So many cultural dramas within the drama. Loving it!
I also love the opening song so muchhh, I don't know why but it makes me feel nostalgic about an era I know nothing about. And it doesn't sound like hundreds of other opening themes that have the same chord progression. I now stan 陸虎's OSTs lol
To me this drama is just so reminiscent of Farewell to my Concubine. It made me remember how much I miss Leslie Cheung.

@@maygriffin8705 I wholeheartedly agree. I was a child when I first saw it with my parents in the art cinema and have been a favorite of mine ever since. It is one of those movies I keep rewatching year after year even though it makes me cry every time.

I watched the first 6 episodes and I absolute adore this drama.So good, I am impressed by the quality.The photography, the light, the visuals, the costumes are to die for.The era period is very interesting rich in events, a lot going on, the plot is interesting, great actors , so I will keep looking forward the next episodes.Last but not least Huang Xiaoming is gorgeous.

Yayyyyy!!! Thank you very much, AvenueX, for your review of this amazing drama series. You mentioned it last week in another video just to notify us prior to its airing. I checked out the first episode last weekend on Viki which was only about 50% Eng subbed, but I couldn't stop watching because the characters, the story and the setting all have me hooked! Now Eps 1 & 2 are nearly fully subbed and I'll be watching it on Viki even though it's lagging behind the IQIYI channel, but I don't mind. It's worth the wait!

I’ve only watched this drama up to the translated episodes however, I’ve continued to watch additional episodes even without the subtitles. I’m truly captivated by storyline and I love both male leads in this drama. As a child I remember my grandfather playing his recorded albums on various Peking opera performances. At times I would observe him with laughing or sobbing while listening to the story. I appreciate watching this drama as it helps me to better understand the dynamics of the political and class differences and indifference during that time frame. I agree with you that the quality of the drama, acting, and soundtrack is top notch.
This is seriously my number 1 on my top 10 of most favourites C-dramas of all time!! The scriptwritting, the production, the makeup/costumes , the music, THE ACTING, just every single thing about this drama was MARVELOUS ! ;u; Not to mention was based on one of my favourites Danmei novel.

Yay! I was looking forward to first impression of this drama. I could tell that this drama was trying real hard to promote Chinese arts and crafts! It's very interesting that hand movements in Chinese opera mean certain things because my country's traditional arts have similar nuances. I feel that I am purely watching this drama for how beautiful YZ is on stage and how pouty he is off stage lol. I just love the character of Shang Xirui. Even his name sounds so elegant lol. So far, I've liked the diversity of central female characters, of which there are surprisingly many for a drama with BL origins. I happen to love Tan Jianci too, so I can't wait to see him in more scenes. I fast forward through any scenes Cheng Fengtai has with the military lol.

I really like Yin Zheng and She shi man. Both of them are great actor and actress.
I loved the scene where Fan Xiang'er scolded Shang Xirui through a thin bamboo curtain in episode 10. The firy exchange between the two characters, both in language and emotion, is so intense. I think that scene was perfectly done!
I hope you will do one more video about this drama. Maybe a final review or a comparison between book and drama. I can’t get over it and just wanna know more. 😁

Watched 9 eps and so far I thoroughly enjoyed it, which is a good sign since I usually got bored easily especially if the story is draggy. The shots all look very beautiful and give a very cinematic feeling, the costumes are pretty and look expensive, especially the opera costumes. The two lead actors also did a very good job, especially Yin Zheng has a very difficult role!
And can't agree with you more, he looks sooo gorgeous in the opera make up..he looks ethereal I can't believe it's the same person lol. I guess maybe it's one of the reasons he was cast for this role? and the opening song is sooo good and I was hooked the first time I heard it!

I watched it because of Yin Zheng and I'm loving it. Love how Yin Zheng used his own voice. I knew nothing about Beijing Opera except for what I saw from 天天向上 and this drama got me into digging more into the art.

I started to watch this drama ystrday& i just couldnt stop!i binge the whole available episode& now i regretted it coz now i have to wait for more episode to come😭😭 my goodness what a story, what an acting!superb!especially yun zheng as shang bi rui, i fell in love with his character from the 1st😍 and his chemistry with huang xiao ming is above expectation,their interaction on screen is so electrify! Sometimes funny,sometimes sad, sometimes painful, but its always profoundly heartwrenchingly good, i always hbe tears in my eyes watching them on screen😭all the songs r great&beautiful👍👍 shang xi rui is the most beautiful man i’ve ever seen in any drama in my whole lifetime😂

This was one of the best periodic drama specially the Chinese Opera, make-up , costumes. I must agree the casting of actors were on point all the characters were 💯 I am loving this production as I loved Yanxi palace too. I am definitely gonna do more research on the director Hui Kaidong

This drama has a very real feel to it.Compared to most c or k dramas,its like leaving the saturday morning cartoons to watch a really good adult movie.You are spot on regarding the visual effects and the quality of the acting.Yin Zheng is outstanding as well as beautiful in costume.Whether he is more beautiful than you in full makeup is debatable: guess whom I would rather kiss?In regular non-makeup its no contest.From what I have watched so far, your review is right on although a little tough.

Jiejie you sure are lucky to watch it alone and there isnt around you expert on Beijing opera. I personally read the novel stop at chapter 20 something, it blowed my brain into a messed (I plan to finish the read, and paused it so long until I dont remember clearly) when its aired my mom urged me to spend the money to watch. Every single scene of that Beijing opera came, she comment like a machine gun. I cant really grapsed the "feel" because of her, well I couldnt blame born from an artistic mom (I suspected my mom is a crossover from ancient period she practically could do the instrument, sewing, drawing, dance, poet and pen plus singing). Btw Yin Zheng is a second beauty, play this after the late Cheung Kwok-wing aka Leslie Cheung, they are so beauty despite bore man facial bone.
From the screenshots, the set and lightning look amazing. I am not sure about the cast combination.... But I might take a stab at it
I felt a bit unsure when Huang Xiao Minh was casted as one of the main leads for this drama too. But so far it seemed to be better than my expectation.

I cann "follow" your thoughts and very very often I think the same and feel the same about the details you point out... My problem with you is that I am NOT an English speaking person, so, you speak nonstop, I cannot even breath properly from a thought to the other.... and with such speed that it really is challenging you to follow. I mean... I am a teacher (ok, that is my fault)... and I know that things you are teaching, data or new impression, has to be given in a slow tempo, in order to be integrated into the minds of your students.... you are so speedy, so rush, you give us no tempo to integrate... all your toughts are brilliant and quickly sparkling, but then you go further without giving (me) time to breath through... all is so damned fast... You are so precuois and your mind works in a fast, rapid, terrific, schorcing, vivacious tempo... so at the end I am mindblowing and I have to rehearsal your video... because it was all too, too fast... your English... I need a little bit slower timing... are you so fast and terrific in your private life too? ha ha.. I am more a zen person... Blessing to you

I loved this Drama. The script, acting, costumes are amazing. Huang Xiao Ming surprised me. He had quite a chemistry with Yin Zheng. The subtle subtext was presented so believable. I definitely could catch the feelings blooming between these two. It’s very subtle but it’s there ✨
I will definitely watch it as I am great fan of operas since I watched Farewll my concubines I love operas I have lived in Chengdu and Beijing and I can make out difference in Beijing opera and Chengdu changing mask and other skits and I was so hooked that I used to go almost every week to watch Beijing opera just watch twice so yeah I will watch it BUt I like to watch when whole drams i s released with subtitles
I love this drama so much, so much so that I went and bought Aiqiyi VIP so I can watch more episodes. As a person that know nothing about Chinese opera, I truly stunned by how beautiful, elegant, how much hardship yin zheng went through to play that character. As a person who read through the novel, I still appreciate how they try to get the whole story represent without the BL plot.

Looking forward to your opinion on this, personally, I consider this one to be watcheable with some flaws that put me off. A friend said to me, wouldn't it be nice to have She Shiman play the rich businessman and fall for the talented Beijing opera singer, I can't get that idea out of my mind ever since.
Tbh I am kinda sad it doesn't have more episodes. Hehe

This is a BL adaptation? Huh, I'm not the biggest fan of modern(er) dramas but the costumes look very nice. Ah yes the NiF2 guy! No wonder he looked familiar. Also definite drama drought at the moment so...
All Chinese dramas have Chinese subs right? It would have been awesome if they had dubs of the regional accents! Can't understand Mandarin but slowly realising there is differences in dialects is reallllllly cool. (TY CQL all the gusu/yunment vers pls!)

I love this show as much as I loathe the bgm. It's a testament to just how good this series is that it can rise above the non-stop schmaltz that drowns out the dialogue. It's intrusive. My hope is that some day it will be reissued with bgm volume reduced.

It's crazy because I read the novel thinking it was just a really, really good fanfic someone translated. And I loved the story because their relationship is like a bitter cookie with something sweet inside.
I think their character portrayals are good enough but are a little awkward since the shamelessness of one of the characters is sooooo toned down lol. But I get it. Still fun to watch when free.

I love this drama and agree what you said, but most thing I am worry about is that how this drama is going to depict the relationship between two main leads，because it's main thread in original novel，it's very hard to keep story completed without describing their "love".

I really am liking this video..its comp!ex in its story with lots of layers..I learn so much history being produced and teaching novices like me...the costumes and background backgrounds.. Fill in the story well.I'll probably have to watch several times to really understand all of it...especially the Opera concept...but I want to learn...on a side note...I live in the us and have to deal with the constant BS on our tv from disgruntled phoney newscasters regarding trump..I come to your site and other Chinese and Korean dramas to give me an escape from the drivel of American news venues...so please don't go there is appreciate these videos and look to you to explain them to me...🙂

I wish I could wear red lipstick so natural as you do! I once used and everybody pointed that “it was beautiful, but should wear more natural colors everyday” ☹️ I wish I could use it everyday without being judged because I think red is the most flattering color for the lips.
To wear red lipstick for everyday look you need to tone down everything else with little to no blush. Preferably wearing more neutral shades of clothing just like what she did here 😊
I watched nirvana in fire 2 because of his acting... I was so sad after he died that i dropped the drama..
Yin Zheng is so gooood
Oh talking about accuracy problem reminds me of Skate Into Love, how it messed up on figure skating in the episode 3. There was a typo "后外韧" and they made a mistake on saying that the axel jump is approached from backward outside edge while it is suppose to be forward. Plus it is very unnecessary and makes no sense to make an ice hockey player to compete with a figure skater in figure skating skills just to create and showcase a conflict between the two characters. Moreover, in the beginning where the female lead is in a short track speed skating tournament, all the contestants are not wearing goggles. It is very unprofessional while the drama had professional athletes or coaches on crew when filming and the drama has been marketing itself as one that promotes the sports on ice. To me, it shows that the drama doesn't actually care about showing the sports with accuracy, but just using the sports for marketing to trick audience into watching (whether or not they are fans of the sports).

Man, I remember when Charmaine was in snowy fox white mountain in TVB days and I hated her acting in the beginning. Watched her in the later years in TVB and she was better, so very interested to see her now after getting put off by her for decades.

As a huge BL fan I went with full love and dedication to watch this drama. Photography and costumes were gorgeous. All that aside, I couldn't finish the second episode. If any Brazilians are reading this (not likely), one of the ML gave huge bolsominion vibes. I couldn't deal.

Entrou, gritou com os senhorezinhos lá, enfiou a arma na cara, desacatou meio mundo, lavou o rosto, foi pra casa bancar o bom marido da família tradicional chinesa kkkkkk. Me irritou. De miliciano, já basta o presidente da minha terra, não quero ver miliciano de outros cantos não kkkkkk Sei lá. Sem falar que eu achei que eles dois (eu só vi dois episódios, veja bem) tinham ZERO química. Tipo, tá, tem que ser bromance. Mas a gente bem sabe que tem umas novelas que esse b fica bem pequenininho, né? Word of Honor, Mo dao zu shi, Ancient Detective, Silent Criminal, Detetive da Dinastia Ming... é tudo bromance de araque, os caras tem vários momentos que tu pensa "ih, a censura deu mole ai". Esse não. No pouco que eu vi, eles pareciam mesmo dois manos, "oi tudo bem, e ai?". Me irritou. Eu gosto assim dum troço açucarado, os mocinhos casados-com-filhos, sabe? heheheh
@@thatianavictoriamachado4553 pra defender ele, não querendo mudar sua impressão, é claro, isso não dura muito, mas é como ele lida com os negócios da família dele, os empresários têm que ser assim. Pode ser que você não goste muito do tema na verdade, mas eu gostei muito do Cheng Feng Tai, acho que a gente tem que entender o contexto da época em que ele vivia. O próprio Shang Xirui não é perfeito, mas ele tbm é um retrato de como as pessoas eram na época, e isso com uma dose pesada de censura, no drama ele vai evoluindo, como a gente tbm vai conhecendo o Fengtai. Sobre a química, você realmente viu pouco, pq eles são um dos melhores casais de drama chinês que já vi até agora. Fengtai é encantado no SXR, sim, o tema aqui é mais sério e realista e menos fantasioso como The Untamed ou WOH, mas você vai ver o companheirismo entre eles dois, o carinho e sim, só não vão falar que estão apaixonados, mas eles estão sim. Não vai ter nada de bros entre os dois eu garanto. Mas claro, se te dar gatilho e lembra daquele que não devemos mencionar o nome claro que é melhor não ver hahaha mas se você tentar assistir garanto que não vai se arrepender

Tente mesmo, e a gente assiste pra sair da realidade e não entrar em outra, se mesmo assim ainda te incomodar você pode sempre parar e tá tudo bem.

Dear Avenue X, I don't feel that I am good enough to learn Mandarin Chinese, however, there are several words and names I would like to learn to pronounce correctly. You are speaking at your normal speed in pronouncing Chinese names and words. Could I ask you to slow down a little bit so that I can work out the pronunciation of these words? I have been to China three times and want to come back at least ten more times in the future! Unfortunately, my health is not good.

Question for those watching this drama who are actually BL fans, is the main CP's relationship really muted bromance so far or is it more like Guardian/The Untamed "bromance"?
I have issues with Yu Zheng too, and early on I remember seeing an article where it seemed like he was saying he didn't care about the two men's relationship since his focus was the opera part. In other words, he was gonna mutate the BL into nothing, which is the type of thing that always bothers me cuz then why adapt from BL, go find a BG novel instead. But I might've been jumping to conclusions, so for the novel fans who are also BL fans, are you happy with this adaptation so far?
To me, I actually really liked it so far and both actors did a great job acting. And because of the show is trying to promote chinese culture, there are a lot of regular viewers who also kinda caught on that it's a BL adaptation. I don't know if they are going to keep up with the good work in the later episodes, but so far i'm happy and I personally prefer the show adaptation of the businessman character than the book one.
There is definitely romance going on between the 2 male leads but since I didn’t read the novel I don’t understand why the male lead has a wife and a son ... makes the male lead look like a scumbag

when the male lead was young, the family's company went bankrupt and his father passed away. his mother already ran off when he was very little, so he is the only son out of 4 young siblings left to fend for themselves. his older sister was only 18yo at that time and had to sleep with rich men to keep the siblings fed. he almost had to do the same, but luckily they were able to arrange for him to marry an older girl from a very rich family. thanks to money from his wife's family, he was able to build a successful business and raised his younger sisters. he is indebted to his wife and is never going to leave her, but it's not a marriage of love
there's been several flashbacks referencing to this in the drama and idk if they're gonna expand more
I am enjoying this drama but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who is specifically looking for BL, especially if they're looking for something similar to Guardian/The Untamed. the relationship is definitely not reduced to nothing and some lines are verbatim from the novel, but it's not nearly as in your face as the latter dramas. there's lots of other aspects to enjoy but I don't think BL is the forefront
(plus imo Winter Begonia's novel itself feels like a different genre from the other two novels, even though they all get lumped under the the BL umbrella just bc they feature a gay relationship)

my sister and i sometimes watch something together and then point out this and that are not realistic. we didn't get far before we decided to try not to inject reality into dramas anymore. there are limitations so you're set for disappointment if your expectations are too high.
I watched 6 episodes so far & i think it had potential but something is missing... I don't know what is it... I also don't understand the opera thing so it is illogical to me why they became friends
I like your detailed review. Suggestion for next time: before you review what the ending for the book is, can you scream spoiler next so we stop watching. I am currently reading the novel and was watching this video because I am interested in what you think of the drama but not expecting you to tell us what the ending of the book is.

@@AvenueX123 I appreciate you didn't give out exactly what happened ar the end but saying its an open ending from this I infer thr book doesnt explicitly say they lived happily ever after, nor is it they never see each other again. I generally dont like to read books if I know the ending doesnt resolve things so your comment has put me off reading the book a bit. But then it might just be me who has this opinion so don't take it too seriously. I am happy you read comments and personally respond to them.

Very nice really ,beautiful representation of the era. But also I loved the fluffy winter coats for poor people " ,its just so sweet. I like the characters, except from the female characters, which I totally think are mostly dull, or on the surface...is it on purpose? The 2 male characters are great, even not totally expand their feelings ...thank you
Off topic, good novel writer might not be any good as a script writer. My dive into Ao3 saw a lot of Harry fan writes but little beast stuff. Anyway thank you for review, will wait for more episodes to watch one shot. Also if not in 普通话 very little chance for people like me to understand it. Would be weird if have to read subtitles in a Chinese drama
adding a bit accent, not full on regional dialect would make it much more grounded, if you're from shanghai but you're lived in BJ for a while then you may have a mixed kind of accent, and a tint of Dongbei accent is super dramatic, but, yes, I'm hoping for too much
Regional accents did work in other dramas though, such as Shanghai accent in 红色 and Beijing accent in the old classic 大宅门 as well as Dongbei accent in 闯关东. Afterall, it's just accent, not full on dialects. Though full dialects did work way back, such 孽债 was full on Shanghaiese when it swept China in early 90s before a dubbed mandarin version came out.
I see, did not though of just accents, was thinking of full dialects since had seen Chinese operas done in full dialects. They go way over my head. Sounds very different even if you speak the dialect.
