I have to agree this drama have a lot of Adlibs and the chemistry between the leads and supporting roles make it entertaining to watch. For example there’s a scene where the ML ate a dessert from the FL mouth. He was supposed to only take a bite from it but it turned out to be kiss because his mouth was too big lol.

Honestly, Ding Yu Xi's seems to have the ability to create chemistry with almost anyone. Watch him in Just An Encore and you will see it, this man can literally fall in love with a stone and even i will be sold! That shows how good he is when it comes to create the perfect chemistry with his female leads, unlike most of the other actors who seems a bit wooden and awkward at times. His eyes really is so mesmerizing to watch, seriously.

Totally agree on the image aspects. Most scenes make me wonder if it's supposed to be a dream? Like the filters are so white & burnt!
However, the drama got me from the very first few seconds, because of the plot but also the main female lead actress. The story is funny, it serves to critizice not just what's going on in C-dramaland, but also exposes a lot of issues with how misogynistic things were back then. The only reason we laugh at the reversed genre situations, it's because we think it looks ridiculous... then you immediately wonder, why? Because it's men. We have so assumed it was normal for women to be treated like property, that we don't see how ridiculous that was when we see normal period dramas.
I also like that the male actor in the drama points out to the writer that by reversing genre roles, she's just perpetrating the same mistakes a patriarchal society had.
Changing subjects, it's interesting that you see a potential real life ship XD

Ding Yuxi has been on my radar since he did Just an Encore... I really love all the dramas he does... his script choices are very good and refreshing.
And I was watching 《Intense Love》 BTS and I figured that he just has amazing chemistry with all his female lead co-stars... since I wanna ship him with everyone be it Zhao LuSi or Zhang Yuxi. I guess he is just that good.

I usually don’t like period web drama, but this drama and another drama by ZLS “love better than immortality” are an exception. ZLS is still young and this kind of character fit her very much. However, I believe with the increasing fame, ZLS can get a better script in the future. And I agree with you, DYX is a talented actor. Both of ZLS and DYX will have a bright future in this industry.

I wasn't necessarily planning on watching this one, although I did have some interest in it. But as soon as I watched it, oh _wow_ this drama pulled me in really fast. The giggling turned into squealing and fangirling, with me needing to pause and feeling like my younger self who was so into these shoujo-esque genres. The main couple definitely has great chemistry and the characters are all a lot of fun, and the show's been doing comedy really well so far.
I'm curious where the plot will go, but despite its tropes, it's still been somehow quite refreshing. I picked up on some of the flaws you mentioned, but not too much, and it didn't take away from my enjoyment a lot.
I do agree the female lead may suffer from some typecasting (I remember her face from _Oh My Emperor_ since I've listened to Xiao Zhan's song for that drama so much ahaha), but she does pull the comedic role off really well. And I think she's shown her ability to act diversely when in the first episode she was still playing the spoiled, haughty third princess, so maybe agencies will pick up on that and she'll have more chances in the future.
The male lead is one I'm completely new to, but he's impressed me a lot so far! I'll look forward to his future projects, and I agree he does seem somewhat smitten behind the scenes (either that, or he's just very cute-I saw the behind-the-scenes clip of him giving the female lead actress those puppy dog eyes and idk... There seems to be this playful curiosity there). It's not necessarily anything to read into, but it's a fun little detail.
Now that I've bing-watched all the currently available episodes with English subs, I'll keep my fingers crossed that it stays this interesting. It does seem to lean more into the love triangle later on, which I won't necessarily mind, but I have liked what I've seen so far. I truly was not expecting to be this obsessed, but here we are.

I'm watching this right now, and I'm really enjoying it! I agree with most of what you said, and am glad you said it - for example I didn't get the colour-grading inconsistency (am watching most of the episodes on a laptop screen, and not even fullscreen at times) but the skin smoothing was so jarring - like in one scene, Zhao Lu Si looked like she had two black eyes, and I kept waiting for the dialogue to address it and then it didn't.
Also, the dubbing and ADR, lord have mercy. Seriously, poor Ding Yuxi. He's there doing his best, and sometimes you hear one voice coming out of his mouth, and sometimes there's the same voice, but with the tone of a radio announcer. In the same scene, even. In spite of this, he still has great chemistry with ZLS, and I adore their relationship.
Just to mention one of my favourite parts, is when she keeps meeting the trio of writers, and telling them the story of banana, orange and apple, trying to fix the mess she's made of her story. And that's just it - the conceit justifies and explains all the criticisms we throw at it. The matriarchal society doesn't make sense? Well, no: because it comes from the head of a not very good tv writer, someone who just brings in a new character when a storyline gets stuck! Even the writers she made up tell her what a bad idea that is!
The thing that bothered me most at first was Han Shuo, and how on earth Xiao Qian imagined that a guy who murdered his wife on their wedding night could ever be the hero (surely that's the villain!). I love the way the characters won't listen to her, which is like the universe trying to show her that Han Ming Xing was right: real human beings don't act that way! I don't like the cliched "You've never been in love" trope - I do like the idea that she's writing in cliches and tropes, and needs to write more sincerely.

I've seen Zhao Lusi's behind-the-scene clips of Love Better than Immortality, and she and her male costar, Li Hongyi, appeared to be in love, also. They were filming a kissing scene, and Li Hongyi was actually tickling her stomach while the camera was filming the upper half of their bodies. She was trying to keep a straight face. When the camera stopped rolling, she pushed him away and nearly toppled backward. He lunged forward and tried to catch her. I don't think that was edited, either. So now I'm confused. Who's really in love with her? Maybe Zhao Lusi is just a really lovable person and most of her costars crush on her.

    • @yoonmikim5663
      @yoonmikim5663 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

I read Li Hongyi was into her, for both of their dramas, but she didn't return the feelings at all and treated him more like a big brother type, and joked with him like that. He flirt mercilessly during their interviews, too, and she returned exactly zero of it. She treated him more like a familiar brother type the entire time.
But the BTS here, for RotT&R there is a "return" volley from her in places. Like she slipped in places. His acting style is pretty similar to hers, personality wise. Like when they are reviewing shots on camera together, she gives a sideways look, and laughs with him. He gives her a sideways look back. She tries to get his attention by attaching a fan on her belt and persists with it, even when he's not looking. She didn't do that with her other costars, so personally, I smelled some return volley going. I wouldn't mind seeing them in another drama together.

    • @bamboodroplets
      @bamboodroplets 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

I haven't seen that many interviews of Li Hongyi and Zhao Lusi, but I could tell that he was acting like a school boy in love in the behind the scenes clips of Love Better than Immortality. Who tickles his female colleague while working, unless he is flirting and trying to get her attention as much as possible? I have also seen them in a fan meeting for Love Better than Immortality. There was a game they had to play, in which Li Hongyi had to cover his eyes and hold the hands of 10 women, then figure out which one out of the 10 was Zhao Lusi. Except...Zhao Lusi decided to withdraw without letting Li Hongyi know (because he was blindfolded) and put another fan in her place. This obviously presented him with an unexpected challenge, since the assumption of the game was that Zhao Lusi would be among the 10 women. Anyway, I was really impressed with how Li Hongyi could tell none of the 10 women were Lusi. How did he figure it out simply by holding someone's hands? I have no clue. There was also some rumor that they were seen having dinner with the crew, and the two of them were sitting close together holding hands while eating. He also wiped her mouth for her.
As for Ding Yuxi and Zhao Lusi, I noticed chemistry behind the scenes. Ding Yuxi was definitely less "touchy-feely" than Li Hongyi. Ding Yuxi and Zhao Lusi joked and laughed together a lot off screen, but I didn't see him taking every opportunity to grab her hand or arm (or tickle her). Of course, that doesn't mean he's not interested in her. He is just being more subtle and mature about it, I guess. I saw them together on an online zoom chat to promote Romance of Tiger and Rose, and I couldn't see any overt flirting between them. They were joking a lot, though, but I couldn't quite detect any romantic tension. Regardless, they are very cute together in Romance of Tiger and Rose, but I find that Zhao Lusi has a knack for appearing really cute with all her male costars in the dramas.

LiHong Yi and Zhao Lusi are very young and both the same age. And probably because of that they look like two schoolchildren in love who are constantly touching and teasing. Ryan Ding is older and more serious, and his behavior is more mature, but still ... I don't feel that chemistry. According to the interview, Hongyi and Lusi are shy in their approach to the opposite sex, so it is obvious from their behavior on the set that there is something more than friendship between them.

Yes the sort of appearing in a game and script is also present in other dramas like Unique Lady too. I've been watching this drama and I do like it as it is a mix of comedy and is slightly different in terms of the setting, but felt that it does sort of repeat some tropes I've seen before. I do like the actors and hope maybe to see Zhao Lusi in another type of role though I do feel like she really does play this sort of character really well. Ryan Ding is also in Intense Love too that's airing at the minute, playing a doctor so it's interesting to see a contrast in his characterisation. Great review as always and look forward to the next ^^

I’ve been loving this drama, I was so excited to see you made a video on it! I agree for the most part! I think this show sort of plays with gender roles a bit like how Oh My General and Go Princess Go does. While I’ve noticed some inconsistencies (I’m only on episode 4), I’ve actually found it refreshing mostly. Compared to Go Princess Go and Oh My General I’ve felt like this show... is just kind of more positive of femininity being seen as good in general rather than weaker/not as good. Also the in show universe mostly takes its setup seriously, even tho it’s not always consistent, whereas as much as I liked Go Princess Go I felt like that show veered from treating everyone like a joke to trying to become some serious emotional story halfway through.

I know the female lead from I Hear You. She's good in there and I like her from there :)
There are many technical aspects that's lacking but I can forgive the drama for it. As I really really enjoy the story. It's been a long time since I actually laughed out loud when I watched a drama, and Tiger and Rose manage to do that for me

I didn't get the male lead until ~ep7/8, and now I get it! 2nd male lead also looks good.
And one of the 3 storytellers (the female lead's ancient scriptwriter team) is the 小卓子/小邓子 in !

Yaaaaaay 🎉a drama you like for now anyway. as for being typecast that’s never good early on in a career and hope she gets the opportunity to try different roles soon. It’s a shame when production values aren’t upto scratch but at least it’s something fresh for you to watch.
Now I’ve not seen it but, 😁 I’ve been watching Longest Day In Chang’an and I love it, mind you I’ve only seen 8 or 9 episodes so far but wow the production values in that are great and I do love many of the costumes worn. I was surprised to see Djimon Hounsou make a appearance in it even though he was dubbed 🤣😂😭

For the first time I disagree with you XD I think that the set up is not well research or that some stuff doesnt make sense, because the female lead is not a great script writer lol for me all the flaws of the set up or story or characters are her own flaws as a script writer lol which is why it is so funny lol I remember one scene where she was upset about the male lead for something and she remembered that she was the one that made him like this so she couldnt even blame him, she could just blame herself for her poor writing 😅

The first episode captured me and now I'm obsessed! Both leads have incredible chemistry and I'm even loving their chemistry with the characters Bai Ji and Zi Rui.
I love that the drama doesn't take itself too seriously and even in tense scenes, there's always an abrupt comic relief (like in episode 6 when he was fighting with the guards after freeing himself from his shackles.)
I did think it was strange that they dubbed the ML's voice but FL, Bai Ji and Zi Rui all kept their original voices. It makes the disconnect more pronounced. Oh well, just going to enjoy this while it lasts 😁

I really doubt the male lead actually fell in love with the female lead actress. Why can't he just be a good actor instead of everyone reading so much into it. I saw them on a livestream interview with the female lead's sister and previous fiance and there was no sense of irl affection.

He acts very similarly to a friend of mine in when it comes to behaviours towards a pretty person from the opposite sex, it reads to me like "in the moment" intense, but most likely also lasts only about that long

So I'm pretty sure in ep 22, the forest is the same forest as in the last ep of Ancient Detective, but the latter just looks a lot more pleasing to the eye lol. Guess I kinda got used to the filters when you plow through a drama but when there's a side by side comparison it's pretty obvious.

I'm watching this and loving it. Re: the skin-smoothing, I did wonder why she seemed to have a black eye in some scenes. I wondered if she had allergies. I agree with you about them dropping the ball re the matriarchal society -- for instance, why does the city master have male prime ministers/advisors-- but i thought that the heroine/screenwriter is not that bright so i figure she created a messy world. But maybe that's too meta and me excusing the dropped ball.

I am looking forward to The Long Ballard and hope to see a good pairing of Zhao Lu Si with Dilreba with a bigger budget. She is cute as female lead in her own dramas and you can expect wackiness from her character, which is entertaining. She is expressively comical when she looks perturbed, says funny contemporary terms like bye2 or casually looking at her wrist to check time! However I find it difficult to focus on her dramas after a while for some inexplicable reason. Would you do a review on Love Designer any time soon? Wonder if there is excessive face smoothing? Learnt a new term dai ji jin zhu today..boy will that term ring in my head for every drama henceforth.

I don't watch too many C-dramas but this one is my top two, the other being Lang Ya Bang. The reason is not only does it have a witty funny script (and more sex jokes than any C drama that dared to put in), but the characters are beautifully written, especially the male lead Han Shuo. I can write a whole essay on him. The only problem with it was the 2 episodes toward the end when they ended up in Xuanhu, that was just full of idiocy and it really went against the beautiful themes of the story that came before and pretty much betrayed it. But the ending was beautiful and the acting is superb, especially the two leads. I became a fan of Zhao Lusi after this series and I'm usually not a fan of many female Chinese actresses. The only other one I can think of on top of my head that I was really impressed by is Zhou Xun. Ding Yu Xi was really great and a really expressive actor. It's too bad that the way that he looks is controversial and he doesn't have much "additional" skills that can put him ahead such as dancing or Kungfu abilities (all of his body doubles were really freakin' obvious and they even showed their face full front many times). I think if he works on that a bit he can be casted in more roles.

The reason I love this drama is bc it’s so many hidden info that are not presented directly from the show, for example, the original character - Chen Qianqian, might not be as evil as it showed, also the show has many ironies toward current play writers. Also, one of the most controversial topics among Chinese netizens is that Chen Xiaoqian as the writer, her feeling toward Han Shuo.

waiting to finish "intense love" before I start "the romance of tiger and rose" it seems the male leads voice is dubbed in this one and it just sounds weird after coming from watching a drama with his actual voice. he is a good actor, very expressive! I like Zhao lu si as well but I hope she picks dramas with stronger stories, the killing of 3000 crows was a disappointment

I can see the male lead can do any diverse roles in the future cuz he has the face of not too much of a pretty boy and not too manly features-just well balanced. I cant really describe it clearly but he can deliver the emotions just through his eyes. I dunno I never been a hardcore fan to any chinese actors/tresses because I just watch whatever shows but you guys can tell by watching it.. [I'm going crazy]

I can understand the points made in your analysis and agree with many in my head but because i have recently watched a spate of lighter period dramas in which the heroine was so young and ditzy/loud and "carefree" that i am currently blinded to all the flaws of Tiger and Rose and can only gush my love for it. And I do LOVE it! It's my current obsession (mostly because the characters aren't brainless! A heroine who is crafty And adorable! Amazing!). I'm quitting now before exclamations take over my comment but this drama is a Yes for me. (Also watched To Get Her and I've Fallen For You and Love is All- all my new favorites and I wouldn't have said i cared for Rom Coms before and are not included in my earlier complaint)

You're right of course about having something different and I can't thank you enough for the reviews you give! Believe me. I watch them religiously now so I have more time to indulge in the Good stuff.
Edited because my answer kept bothering me haha: Actually I think what matters to me most is that a trope is done well. I could watch that all day because in the end it's why I keep going back to that genre. I don't mind a damsel in distress/immature heroine as long as there is some redemption for the character but it's too painful to watch when it's overdone (an unpopular opinion maybe but two examples for me are Love by hypnotic/The Eternal Love). I've decided cake Is what I want. Never really liked pie anyway. ;D

I heard that the script writer (I think that’s the position) was the same one as 东宫...they said that there would be a hidden storyline somewhere in the middle? I really hope it doesn’t flop near the end, and the hidden storyline can be seen. I definitely agree with your points about the colour grading, skin smoothing and voice dubbing. Maybe the editing was rushed because of the female leads growing fame?
