The two male leads had amazing chemistry. Would have been interesting to see the original concept without the female lead.
Same these days I would prefer to watch bromance without a female lead
Do they form a relationship at any point, or does the young guy fall for his roommate? If so, that seems to completely, defeat the whole idea, to begin with.

I've only, gotten as far as episode four in this one, and I'm not finished that one yet, because once I found out he marries the girl, and apparently, the police detective/inspector whatever he is, gets phased out of this more and more as we go along, I kind off, lost interest in wanting to keep watching. I was ready to accept that this was not going to be a Boy Love story after all, but it was too disappointing to realize there was not even, going to be much of a Bromance between the two guys either, and after all; isn't that why most of us wanted to watch this? Right?
That being said; I'm enjoying the stories anyway, and love the cloths and backdrops and everything, so may continue watching for those reasons, anyway.
In one of the clips, from another channel here, advertising this series, there's a clip where the young fellow comes into a bar and speaks to the police inspector and starts to tell him about who he really loves. I never got the entire thing correctly, but I choose to believe that he actually, loves the police inspector and is forced to marry the girl for whatever reason. At least, I can get some satisfaction out of it that way.
I came across two others, after this one, which I think, I like more, actually. One is "Lord Critical World" where there is definitely, clearly, a strong Bromance between the two, male, leads in that one, and the backdrop is absolutely, stunning, but sadly, they've only, uploaded four episodes over TH-cam here; and the other one is the one I'm watching now; "Advance Bravely," which is maybe, the best Boy Love drama I've seen so far. And that one DEFINITELY, is a Boy Love story, no mistaking that, at all. I think the whole series is uploaded to TH-cam here, but man, the censoring is utterly, insane. I think they have huge chunks of the entire series cut out. Ridicules. Utterly, ridicules. Despite that, the two, lead, male, actors do a super awesome job in portraying their roles, and I'm finding it very, moving and touching, indeed. You may already, be aware of both as they keep coming up in the thumbnails on the right side of our screen.

@@ivanj.conway9919 I personally think that the girl didn't really matter in the story. Their romantic relationship would not start until around episode 32 or 33, as they're mostly focused on the case. And there are many many episodes where the girl didn't even appear when they're solving the case (and you really forget she's there until she comes back). So I would say that this drama is still pretty enjoyable for the facts that the two male leads are still more important to the story than the girl
I think that the inspector didn't get washed out or forgotten. Or even thrown aside. I adore Leon Zhang, even with all of his previously failed and bad dramas, so I mostly pay attention to him. And therefore I know that he was never forgotten. It was the girl, in my opinion, that was forgotten. She simply didn't exist in some parts (there are times when she got injured so she didn't appear until the case ended)
I didn't know about LORD but I know Advance Bravely. Sadly, I don't like the novel in the first place and my friend summarise the drama for me, which very like the novel itself. So yeah. I didn't watch it despite everyone recommending it to me. Might be personal preference

I usually avoid romance, yet I shipped the main couple on both series. The way he's smiling and looking very fall in love was so lovable 😍 I really love seeing his smile~

For me, the female lead ruined this drama. Every time she had screentime I had to brace myself for the annoyance she caused within me.
It really is a pity since the other characters/actors did a great job.

I loved this drama. I may be one of the few who liked Bai Youning’s character, but your analysis makes sense. I never noticed that Qiao Chusheng has no home!!! It also makes sense that he was the original roommate. I loved the interactions between Qiao Chusheng and Lu Yao. They were so cute together!
I was annoyed by the FL at first, but her character actually developed and became helpful towards the end of the drama.

I agree so much. Bai Yoning was so inconsistent character and she just came up with all the needed information without any real explanation. I think it would have made lot more sense if Qiao Cusheng had acquired the information through his gang people.
Also there was literally no chemistry between Lu Yao and Bai Yoning.
Now I'm here dreaming of the show as version where Qiao Cusheng takes the poor Lu Yao home and they solve crime together and then go home, Lu Yao cooks for him and they can drink wine together. None of that childish (very sibling like) fighting with Bai Yoning. It would have been so good show.
not just that but she is also abusive towards LY because she knows he won't fight back cause of her daddy. It's not normal to slap, beat, choke or constantly insult "a person you like" or any person at all.
@@anastasiab9506 yeah, I think some of it is quite teasing and innocent kind of play fight friend could do, like hitting each other with pillows, but they often step over the line and I think there are several instances when Bai Yoning actual hurts Lu Yao. I think at least once a he had to go to see doctor because of it. Which is huge red flag for me and shouldn't be played for laughs like the show did. Because really domestic abuse isn't romantic. I got feeling it got worse in the last episodes and Bai Yonings behaviour got even more unhinged.
At the end of the drama, Lu Yao got an urgent telegram while on the ship. guess do you know it from whom?
It was supposed to be a BL drama but unfortunately, China banned any BL themed movies/drama. I really hoped that Qiao Chusheng and Lu Yao would-be lovers in this drama.

The Chinese Government seems to be utterly, brain dead in a great many ways. Never mind if it's culturally, acceptable or not, every thinking person today, knows that attractions between men can't be helped, so why keep demonizing them as they do. What backward, neanderthal, cavemen so many of these fools are.

Thank you for the review. I agree for 100% and thank you for confirming my own thoughts about the drama. Also, your first impression video encouraged me to come back to the series. I stopped after the couple of first episodes because of the Bai Youning character. But then I just skipped most of her scenes and magic happened. Note, there was no loss to the storyline at all
This drama, introduced me to a 2 very prospective young male actors to look forward to for their acting...

This drama would've been one of my top 10's because of the chemistry between LY & QCS and the storyline as well. The cases were really interesting too. It's the just that the female lead is too annoying. The character seemed unessacary. 😢
I was positive about My Roommate is a Detective on the first few episodes but when I saw Bai Youning's character as a deviant or inconclusive part of the drama, I realized I would not like to continue to watch the drama because it will have a faulty story line. As I see comments and teasers about the drama now that it is done, it seems my hunches are true. And it's sad.
I was so disappointed that they forced him to merry that stupid reporter. All that romantic scenes between them was cringy as hell and it killed all my vibe and original hype and excitement for it.
Also the actress that played the reporter also played the same kind of annoying character in another show called L.O.R.D.
Oh so that's where I saw her! I was thinking where have I seen her before the whole time but felt too lazy to find out. Lol

They didn't have any chemistry. If they wanted to put in a love interest they should have cast for a different kind of character or someone else with a different personality vibe. I keep going back to the actress in Arsenal Military Academy who was the Other Woman vying for the male lead's ❤. We Jia Yi - she has a reportery vibe to me but less cringy and might have had more chemistry(maybe - not sure) with Hu Yi Tian.

I stopped watching at episode 4. After episode 1 I started fast forwarding the female "journalist" part and felt less frustrated at the ends. Then I could not find any other eps after 4. But knowing that they got married at the end...thank God I stopped watching at 4. Would have given me an ulcer!😂
Yeah the inconsistencies in BYN's character were annoying. The idea of a tabloid writer being a major character in a mystery drama could have been really interesting (and could have been a nice compliment to a detective and police inspector who were more morally grey than usual), but it seemed like they didn't want to commit to having her experience consequences.
[mild spoilers?] The most tiring point for me was going from the newspaper case where we hear how her mentor taught her to always research thoroughly and report the truth, to a running joke about how everyone who meets LY is like "wow you aren't like how you're described in the papers at all".
That being said I would watch for QCS alone. His fond expressions do me in.
QCS was my favourite too. I have completely fallen in love with the actor. You can really see how he has thought lot of the small details in his character and how talented he is. Also his eyes are so lovely color, I could stare them endlessly. 😆
that's cause she has no talent OR conscience. She is a mafia girl through and through. Just think about it- QCS is a gangster, but after meeting LY he slowly becomes more of a policeman than a gangster, he even goes against his "masters" wishes several times just to do the right thing. She? Never. She only does what she wants, others be damned. She doesn't take any criticism, she always denounces her father and his mafia background but has no problem using his money or his reputation. She worms herself into CS's cases because she knows - without flashy title or gruesome details no one will buy her writing.
Also, her news headline is quite 'clickbait-y'. As a journalist student, i feel annoyed when she talk about writing news
Really enjoyed this drama! I liked the fast pacing, the acting, and the stylistic elements of this drama.

I already praise that China decide to cut drama's into max 40 chapters. Make the story and pace much more interesting in the future. All the new drama's are going towards 40 or less chapters and can only applaud that.
Thank you for the review! I just finished watching this drama after watching your review. I loved it. I love the chemistry between the two male leads. Loved their acting, too. The crime stories are also interesting. Fell in love with Zhang Yunlong, and have been googling his other dramas and films since.
Though we don't always agree on dramas, in this case our thoughts align 100%. It is uncanny. The production itself might agree, the entire promotion for the drama was done by Hu Yitien and Zhan Yunlong, I don't think I saw one interview with the actress except some behind the scenes clips and posters.
The story and the title seems incoherent. The story revolves around solving cases after cases which turned out were instigated by Norman. But the title suggested that the female lead should be the center of it since the title implies it so. But the lady character is just a supporting one as a mediocre newspaper writer.
Thank you! That's exactly what I was thinking!! Why is this writer so lazy for Bai Youning's writing but at the same time even the side female characters with much less screentime have much more memorable writing and characteristics than the female lead... She felt unnecessary and like a last-minute-addition. I often "speed watch" or even skip her parts and it didn't effect the plot. So odd that a lead character seems so unneeded.
Other then that, despite its flaws, I did enjoy this drama. Lu Yao and Qiao Chusheng were definitely the main reason, especially Qiao Chusheng. I wish we would have got more about his back story. Even though the Sherlock inspiration is obvious, these characters still felt orginal and their own persons. Almost all the other characters were intriguing even if the cases seem a bit too much sometimes (...fake lightning and stomach bomb...). Even the Moriarty-ish character was quite good. Although the english dubbing threw me off sometimes. Now I know how you must have felt regarding the accents in Sleuth of Ming Dynasty and Winter Begonia.

There's so much pain in Chusengs heart and overwhelming sadness in his eyes after bidding goodbye with Silly Lu at the final episode. It could have been better if youning did not marry him and just maintained the bromance to the highest level between the two male leads. 🤣🤣🤣 BL heart shipping them so hard. China? Why China? 😆

At some point, I thought they tried to make the main couple exchange male/female roles (Lu Yao being a damsel in distress and Miss Bai being a cool offspring of a gangster family) and failed miserably. But the more I watched, the more I saw that they really just split the initial Chusheng role into two + added some very annoying things for Ms. Bai to do to make sure everyone hated her.
And it's such a pity, it could have been a very good drama, I enjoyed it and chemistry between two male leads was so good. TT_TT

Yes! Thanks for the reasoning of Qiao Chusheng being the actual roommate! I totally agree, even in 1of the episodes where Luyao's apartment was on fire, they both were thinking of passing the night whether in a hotel or at Mr, Bai's home, when I felt so strange that why wouldn't they think of staying the night at Qiao Chusheng's home?? They just ruined the drama a bit by adding the female character in such way, instead could have just kept her to write up the stories as a friend & partner in detection! But, shouldn't have made her the main female lead & for sure shouldn't have her married with Luyao in the end! If censorship was the issue, they could have just kept all the roles going like they are, wasn't necessary to force Luyao into loving Bai Youning!
Therefore, I really wish for a season 2 where this female character will vanish somewhere & the actual roommate Qiao Chusheng will take the place of Luyao's apartment!
The makers can at least do this much for the viewers craving for the 2 male leads' chemistry, now that they can understand what most of the viewers probably are cherishing about the series!

Hu Yitian's comedic physicality in this was fabulous and equally fun to watch. I replayed several sequences. (I've been involved in theatre most of my adult life and good comedic physicality is a true joy to see.) I was wondering as he seemed so much taller than Zhang Yunlong though their bios say they're only 1" difference in height. All in all I loved the show even the parts other people didn't like. When you've sat through as many bad productions of "Oklahoma" and "Evita" as I have, this was perfect. :)

Totally agree with the inconsistent with the English title. It keep bugging me. I think that BY's roles actually can also be done by Qiao Chuseng? He can be Lu Yao's roommate, he can gives underground informations, he can protects Lu Yao very well, he can buy food for LY. There's no need for a three character. Let Qiao Chuseng do his job (for Lu Yao sake)!! The sudden romance between LY and BY was also being pushed, for me. LY said that he wanted to see BY happy and proud face when he solves mysteries, but I think that person was actually Qiao Chuseng. In the Vampire case, Qiao Chuseng was shown smiling happily and proud as LY deliver his deductions. BY can still stick around though, but not that close to the two 😁

Anika Mia Same I perserved a couple more episodes and then I saw the teaser of the kiss between Lu Yao and Bai You Ning and I stopped watching and dropped it like a hot potato, which was a shame as I enjoyed the show to a degree but I really couldnt get past her character as she was highly annoying and no matter how I tried I really couldnt sit through 36 eposides of that!😞 IMO the romance elememt wasnt necessary but as per usual they put that in to throw off the chemistry that Lu Yao and Qiao Chu Sheng had🙄

Actually I was also thinking of that drama name why ‘my roommate is detective’ even though the main 2 protagonist is Zhang yun long and Hu yitain . Now I got that . Thank u for ur explaination. I just don’t like her character coming in between them always whenever Zhang yun long will go to Hu yutian but then seeing with her he returns back . That’s so sad actually . I want them together only no extra character 🙃

Still a bit sad that I didn't finish this drama but since someone told me how it ended, I decided to run away before that fiasco, that way I could keep the positive feeling and the enjoyment it created instead of leaving a sour after-taste 😅
I liked the drama, but 36 episode was enough. The female lead really annoyed me. At one point, I thought if I could climb into my tv, I would have told the female lead collect your pay check and leave and please don't come back.

This drama was so much fun. I really like its "international" type of humor. You don't have to be Chinese to understand most jokes (like Fan Sizhe's name in Joy if Life). I just feel that this is the type of story that doesn't loose much in translation.

I'm a white, Caucasian, Canadian, largely Gay Male, and I've just, begun to watch this last night and am now, halfway through episode four. I've started to watch this because I'm just now, getting into this whole Boy Love Scene coming out of Asia, and TH-cam recommended this two me as a Boy Love Drama. Coming at it as I do, I think, I have a very, different perspective on it, than many others who may be bothered to watch this.
First; we have nothing like this, this whole Boy Love Scene, as in an actual, genera of story telling and television making, here, in Canada or any part of the U.S. either, as far as I know. So out of the lack of anything here, of this nature, I'm turning to these dramas from China and various parts of Asia, in general. I've just, finished watching the Untamed a couple nights back, with overall, good reviews for the most part. Both Xiao and Wang were absolutely, outstanding in their respective roles, and I fell absolutely, in love with both characters, but Wang's in particular.
So far, while it may not turn out to be the Boy Love drama I was hoping for, sadly, they are not even, the ones living together; the two, lead males are extremely, charming and endear, particularly, the sweet, young, guy out of the two, and I'm already, very quickly, falling for both of them. I find the stories and plots quite, enjoyable for the most part, and the backdrops, absolutely, stunning. Absolutely love the architecture and interior design of the 20s/30s going into the 50s and there abouts. Love all the cloths and outfits they wear, particularly those of the guys, of course, so charming and debonair, and I have to say that I don't have too much to complain about, myself, overall. Save the fact I may not see the level of closeness and intimacy between the male leads as I was hoping for. And the fact I don't speak Chinese so reply on the subtitles to know what's being said, which does fool up the flow of the show somewhat, as I have to constantly, pause to catch what's being said. Other than that, I find it great, so far.
Can you tell me when we can expect to get all the episodes over TH-cam here, as we got with the Untamed? After this episode, I think I'm going to have trouble seeing the others. How many are there in total, by the way?

I love this drama as well. And the teo lead male actors did an amazing job. One thing i don't get was the ending. Where he got a telegram and smiled and folded it up into a plane. Please explain.
About the exploding man case: DNP absolutely can kill someone, but it would be more like cooking from the inside than exploding. So it would only take a few adjustments to make it work. For example the movie could have the guy burn to death, and then you realize omg the actor's dead and it looks like his entire body is burned? But there's no fire??

actually, watching the drama, i also made the sherlock holmes connection so it was nice that you pointed it out especially - that's also how i explained the "queerbaiting" as sherlock was quite famous for it. the main leads chemistry was still enjoyable.
the thoughts that went into qiao chusheng's character are really impressing and make soo much sense - looking back, it really helped build his character

The thing that made me enjoy this drama so much was definitely qiao chusheng and lu yao's characters, very interesting! I hated bai youning at first, but even she grew on me
I have the same confusion about younings character.when I saw the trailler I immediatelly concluded that the actors are the roomates.

I started to watching this drama undeniably thinking that ‘My roommate’ is ‘he’. As soon as I find out ‘My’ is ‘she’, I dropped this drama. She was sooooo unnecessary character, I can even spit on the ground. Just simple Sherlock theme would of been fine by the fans, really!
I actually watched that thinking of 🌈BL drama but unfortunately it’s not . But it’s okay .... I enjoyed watching Zhang Yun long whole episode of drama . He mean too much to me 💗.
I am waiting for the fanfics between the two males......only then shall I get closure .This show had the potential of becoming the 2020 Guardian,and they blew it. How unfortunate. I had still enjoyed the show despite this drawback. I look forward to seeing the actors again in other dramas.

I clicked on it accidentally on yt (where I watch most of cdrama) but this made me download IQIYI. What made finish the drama? The two male lead characters and chemistry.
The female lead did feel like a third wheel. They didn't put much thought in to her.
All in all really enjoyed it.
I am an ex-American, who lives now in Australia. I watched this series from go to whoa, and, thoroughly enjoyed the entire plots. I especially liked the bromance of the two male actors, interspersed with the love story between the Detective and the Journalist. Many twists and turns in the plots and the costumes and direction was great. Top Show.
I watched the first episode & drop the drama because i really couldn't bear to watch the annoying female lead... But i will give it try after your review

Thank you Avenue X for this final review at least ur review gives me a lil bit push to finish this drama, i love the chemistry between Lu You and Chuseng, but like majority of people i hv a little bit problem with Youning character. And i agree with your opinion about her character that just like put at last minute for whatever reason, just imagine if they just stick with the original draft of theie scenario, i think we'll served with a lot of fun and interesting scenes between two male leads as they are roommate. So i guess i just have to pick up when im left of this drama in eps 19.
but even added at last minute why make her so annoying, irritating and intrusive ? Who in his right mind can think that making her so abbrasive was a good idea ? Making her steal his food for the sake of building rom-com dynamic between them made me stop watching it.

During what timeframe were dramas (I guess) better written? Also, have you ever done a breakdown of Cdrama types? I hear about Idol dramas and I assumed that it meant that one or both of the lead actor(s) is a singer/dancer- something other than an actor as a first career, but according to Google, that's not it at all.

Bromance virtually does not exist in China, Certain series do, like Untamed and this one "My roommate is a detective" brings out the true friendships that can be shown between same-sex couples. I thoroughly enjoyed this series, even if there were some problems in the transmission. I hope that there are more series coming from China with English sub titles. There was great complexity between the three main characters wich lifted the series.
It's obvious that the You Ning character is added in, it makes no sense that she's always the one that pass the forensic reports to Lu Yao when she's just a reporter in the drama. The writer just take some of Qiao Cusheng's role and pass it on to her.
Would have been better to make all 3 live together.
I really enjoyed their natural chemistry together, and even visually they were very compatible; I definitely had a good time watching the two on screen (especially in those really nice suits😌). But after episode 20 or so I just gave up cause I knew they were going to force the romance thing, and the cases were also getting repetitive.
I think the general consensus here is that the FL was unnecessary but I still thought the actress did a good job.
I hope to see HYT taking more eccentric roles like that in the future, and inspire other young idol-ish actors to get out of their comfort zone.

I can't said that really enjoy the drama bc the female character was so much for me. Many times I just wanted to jump her scenes. I totally agree, the others females characters where more rounded.

The female lead was not NECESSARY at all. I have come to the conclusion that cdrama makers do not know how to write an interesting female lead without making her annoying
If you don't mind me saying My Brother; it seems they keep falling back to the stereotypical idea of what a true and proper Chinese woman should be like. But one would hope that woman are changing in China now, and what is available is changing, as well.
But again, as you say; if this is going to be a proper, Boy Love drama, or even, a proper Bromance for that matter, leave the woman out of it, altogether, unless they are playing supporting roles to help bring the guys together.

When I saw the title for My Roommate is a detective, I really thought Qiao ChuSheng was the roommate lolll honestly I didn't like Bai YouNing at first but then after 20 episodes, I started to like her, so I guess it's ok. EXCITED FOR THE NEW DETECTIVE DRAMA THO WITH THE TWO MALE LEADS
I actually only started the drama because I thought it was a no romance drama with lots of bromance, so I felt rather betrayed by the romance plot lol. Even the titles of the episodes uploaded on TH-cam are misleading, they mention Hu Yitian and Zhang Yunlong as the leads, no lead actress in sight. The thing is, if they'd put a bit more thought into her character, Bai Youning could have been ok. I was actually looking forward to seeing her character (back when i thought there was no romance) at first, and I thought the 3 of them as a trio of friends had the potential to be really good. And it really was at times! The whole thing would probably have been better if they had removed the romance, had Chusheng and Lu Yao as the leads, and kept Bai Youning as a (better written) supporting character.
To be honest, ever since the hotel scandal broke on HYT, and his comments about his co-star, if true, was very mean, so I have not been able to watch his shows or rewatch A Love So Beautiful which I loved. Was going to skip this one but based on your comments, will give it a try. Appreciate your in-depth commentary about the Chinese movie industry.
