You may meet the problem of Disk 1 unknown, not initialized in Windows Disk Management when you try to use an external hard drive on your Windows PC. It can be shown as either Disk unknown, not initialized, no disk space or Disk unknown, not initialized, unallocated space in Windows Disk Management.
Fortunately, this tutorial will show you why your hard drive becomes not initialized in Disk Management and how to solve the problems you have met.
Different methods under different situations:
Situation 1: Disk unknown, not initialized, no disk space
Fix 1. Check hard drive (start from 00:00:48)
Fix 2. Reconnect battery(if applicable) and the disk(start from 00:01:03)
Fix 3. Update disk drivers(start from 00:01:42)
Situation 2: Disk unknown, not initialized, unallocated space
Fix 1. Initialized disk 1(start from 00:02:31)

Keep in mind, Disk Unkown, Not initialized is not always a serious problem. Do not panic and outright try to initialize it in Disk Management. It can happen to both external and internal drives. If it happens just after a power outage, simply shut down your pc and wait for a minute or two, then restart your pc. If it's still missing from windows explorer and shows as not initialized, while your pc is off, you can try another SATA port or even new sata power and data cables.
It just happened to me today and restarting the pc fixed it :D

Every time I start it it takes forever and when it finally show the disk it’s says not responding I closed it the first time the second time I waited for more than 30 minutes and it still said not responding so I closed it and now I’m waiting again. I’m going to try something else

My external hdd which i took out of my other laptop wont initialize. Gets detected as hard drive but wont initialize. Says hardware error, however if i insert back to the laptop as primary disk, it works.. Whats wrong? I used win 10

Mine does not even read the storage capacity. Im using here a usb adapter that works perfectly with other HDD but not with this one

I am using my seagate 1TB EX HDD since one year. There is 700GB data. Suddenly 7days back it gave beep sound. Light gone off. Then I ejected through safe removal process. Then again I attached with laptop and light is still off. But can feel the motor vibration by touching external hard drive. In my computer it is showing nothing. Went to disk manager... Then it is showing " Disk 1, unknown, 931.51 GB, not initialised, unallocated." in the properties it is showing that disk is working properly, partition style - not applicable ..... How to save the data of the HDD..?

Then unfortunately your drive might be dead. ( maybe Write Protected but still dead)
people usually give up if this occur.
after weeks of research I couldn't find anything helpful on internet.
mine was Kingstone 256gb M.2 SSD, been using it for 3 month and had no issue or any sign of faulty drive before.
after my laptop turned of while I was gaming, drive became inaccessible.
no partition could be found or created. ( the error I mentioned )

Hi My suitation the Hard drive detect and automatically remove..wht we do.
Overnight my Internal HHD became Unknown and can't boot up my PC. Using Diskpart to list volume shows "volume#"-volume 1, "Ltr"-C, "Fs"-Unkno (other volumes are showing NTFS or FAT32), "Type"-Partition, "Size" 451GB & "Status"-Healthy. Is this type of Unknown can be fixed, so I can bootup my Windows 10 again?
Try the CHKDSK command first to see if it can be fixed.

Sorry, AOMEI Partition Assistant cannot fix this problem temporarily. The destruction of your disk is not caused by the destruction of MBR, so rebuild MBR is useless.

@@josh5254 I´m facing this very same problem and I was reading an instruction by Microsoft which says that if you initialize a HD with data on it you'll lose all your data.

Then you can only initialize it directly in disk management or Partition Assistant.

BEWARE:
In ordxer to access MBR repair option you need to upgrade to pro version first. So if that's your only problem (and the reason you clicked this video) don't bother with these scam artists.

They are not scam artists, their software is really good. Can't get everything for free. The info shared was gold, saved my 3tb hdd.

@@RacksFPS Hey, I believe that issue i had encountered was not the MBR.
@@RacksFPS I used the option on the software called partition recovery wizard. And in a matter of minutes, the record of my partition was found and I was able to mount it. Hope this helped.
My case is 2nd. Please tell me what is meant by *down red arrow* in this case.
See a video by Riaz Ahmed on this. Take you HDD out and just clean the contact plates with a cotton bud. This is usually a dirt issue on the contacts. Try that it works and no data is lost al all.
Opening HDD will screw it further.. It should be done in a special area completely free of dust.. Even a microscopic dust particle can scratch the plate beyond repair..

unfortunately my hard disk is not initialized unallocated, I don't have any backup. when I click the manage-disk management, popup window open (mbr or gtp), after click ok button then show error. Yeah i've facing same issue right now, after i initialize the disk, the pop-up show "Virtual Disk Manager. Data error (cyclic redundancy check)." so what i do rightnow, i try to run "Erase" the external hardDisk using software HDDscan (u can easy search it at google). They found so many "bad block" in that Disk rightnow, the progress still run, I don't know that can fix it or not or my external hardisk is damage, i Hope it would fix it. :/

@@lilym9475 So looks like I had a bad adapter, after inspecting I noticed one of cooper contacts was bad. I ordered a new ide/sata to usb 3.0 on ebay and all 6 of my old hard drives fired right up. They open perfectly, I guess it wasn't enough power to make disk spin

Hi! Cristy, This error is possibly caused by the connection problem. You can use another cable to connect the external drive. If possible, connect it to another working computer.

I have another problem. I have to disks from an NAS System, they have no issues. But in the disk managment, they are online and also no issues. But i can not partition them, or do something else. If i go to disk settings and go to volume. The

Check your disk to see the specific status of it.
It made it worse. I cant create any partition after i followed the entire process. And i need to buy your product.
