I first tackled the C2C in 1976 it took me 10 days taking it easy as it was first Long Distance Hike, I returned 9 yrs later to do it from East to West after I left the Army. Loved every step of the Way. I am now in my late 60s I get more fun, but less exercise by watching others tackle the C2C. All the Best Tony in Essex
Love these videos. I'm going in July and I've watched a good dozen or so videos from people doing.. Yours is right up there with best footage, advice and information Well done sir 👍🏻
Thank you Heather. It certainly was a moody night and morning. I think I was very fortunate weather wise on the journey. Some of the views on the trail are just breathtaking. I hope you enjoy the videos. John.
Great walk in just 4 days. I'll be onto part 2 shortly and onto the trail in 6 weeks. Current plan has me in Shap on my fourth night, so your vlog has really helped me get a sense of what is in store. Hoping not to experience a night like your first. But what can you do? Best turn of phrase I have heard in a while - "Certainly gets the valves operating." 😆
Cheers James. I hope the other videos help you too. I initially planned to get to Shap on my third night but realised I just wasn't spending the time to enjoy my surroundings so eased off a little. It is a fantastic hike. You will certainly enjoy it no matter what weather you face. Good luck with it. John.
@emperorsgrandads thanks for taking the time to watch them. Yes I did put a bit of a shift in that first day. I do like to crunch a few miles early on in a hike but I was also mindful of the predicted winds that night so I aimed to get somewhere not quite as exposed. Still took a bit of a battering though. John.
I'm glad you enjoyed it Yasmin. Thank you for taking the time. I hope you enjoy the rest of the journey. I'm just about to watch your Sunrise on Hallin Fell.
Nicely Done. You should be proud of your work. Both the adventure, and the video itself. I am considering the Coast to Coast walk. Maybe, September 2023. I'm in reasonably good physical shape, but will be 69 years, then. What do you think? All the best. Eddie, from New York, USA.
Hi Eddie. Thank you for taking the time to view the series, and for your lovely comments. If you are in decent physical shape and prepare well I can't see you having any problems. A lot of people take on long hikes like this after retiring from work so age should not be a concern. Good luck if you go for it and have fun. John.
I really enjoyed your first video. It was very informative and interesting. Did you meet anyone on your way outside the inhabited places, and what were the chances of losing your way?
Hi Kate. Thank you for taking the time to watch the video. You will bump into people all along the route. I actually walked two of the days with guys I met while walking. The only navigational issue I had was the morning of day two and the ascent from Blacksail Hut across to Honister. It was very foggy across the top and I assumed that there was a bit of electricity in the air which was causing my GPS to bounce around. It cost me a little bit of time but nothing too bad. I used map a d compass, GPS and a mobile phone app called OutdoorActive with a gpx file of the route uploaded to the phone. You shouldn't have any issues with navigation as long as you take the correct equipment. Don't rely totally on a mobile. They can be damaged or lost, battery run out etc. I hope this helps. If you have any other queries, just ask away. John.
Many thanks to you for taking time to reply and providing some added information. I may well have more questions. I'm looking forward to watching video number 2.
There is a very Good Pocket Guide Book by Alfred Wainwright with hand drawn maps and view illustrations, last time I renewed my Copy for my East to West Crossing it was priced at £10 but that was some 30 years ago so it could now be £20. Tony in Essex, England.
Living Whitehaven, your day 1 is very much my stomping ground. The lighthouse route goes to Sandwith (pronounced Sanneth) - there is an even shorter route which doesn't go up the cliff but follows the railway, going through St Bees School. The cycle track is part of the C2C cycleway - Whitehaven to the East Coast (Rocker Pier). The south path on Ennnerdale as you say is uneven under foot - the northern path is flat (although a little further) - you did well to get to Black Sail - quite a trek. I walk the coast path normally 5 or 6 times a year, St Bees to Whitehaven or back, it is lovely up there. Roll on Sept when I do the C2C walk (although walking on an organised walk in a group with a guide, hotels and luggage transfers - I heard another YTer refer to it a slackpacking. lol). If you think that night was wild - watch Day Tripper camping at Black Sail - he had to leave the tent and spent the night in the Youth Hostel toilet. He also fell near Honiston but his glasses cut his nose badly so be careful on those slopes.
Hi John can you advice me please. I'm planning my c2c but I have no experience with GPS other than my car satnav. Did you use one and if so which one? Surely I don't have to plot my own route. Iv heard on the os app for example you have to plot your own route?? Can't I just follow a pre planned route if I subscribe to one? Cheers Pete
Hi Pete. My primary navigation was the A to Z booklet for the Coast to Coast. This has been discontinued now but you may find on on the likes of eBay. I also used an app on my phone called OurdoorActive. I personally prefer this over the OS app. It's really simple to use. Install on your phone register a free account, the go on the map and scroll across to St. Bees. Here you will find little icons. Click on them until you find a complete crossing route and select to add it to your map. You then open your map and select the route. If you need any more help just let me know. John.
Hi Anthony. From the slate mine, the route runs next to the road down into Seatoller. From Seatoller, you can follow the traditional route or take the B5289 through Borrowdale. I took the traditional route but both will have you arriving in Rosthwaite. As you get through Rosthwaite, the route turns right. You will now hug the river for about 1.5 miles until it veers right. You will carry straight on and Lining Crag is about another 1.5 miles further.
I love the fact that you're so positive and always looking forward.
Another brilliant video John. Stunning views although Scary at times & your knowledge is amazing 5*
Cheers Angelo. It's great to see you are enjoying them.

Enjoying these video mate as I do the C2C myself. Think you did a mad first day though!

Excellent first part.
Some of the footage is absolutely stunning. The first night in the tent looked fun shall we say 😂
Looking forward to part 2.
It was certainly interesting bro. 😀

I also liked the cape wrath video. Has your ankle healed and do you plan to finish off the trail?
Hi. Yes my ankle is holding up so far. I am going back to continue it this year.
Thank you for taking the time to watch my videos.

Nice vid mate. Would love to do the C2C one day.
It's a great hike. Definitely worth taking on. I'm sure you would manage it no bother.

Brilliant well done! Yeh technology will let you down! 😉
Hopefully less audio problems now. I've got myself a Rode system so that should help. Thank you for watching.
@@thunder_roaming Yeh I had the Mag Mod also and it didn't work well as you can hear in some of the videos and its not waterproof! 😄
How did you get from Honister to Lining Crag?

what tent are you using here please? Going in Sept.
Hi. I'm using a Tarptent Notch Li.
