In cold countries they go one step further and use the hot water that comes out of the steam turbine to heat nearby buildings. A single steam turbine like this can provide enough heat for a good sized city

The electricity we have is thanks to the gas turbine factor, the heart of a power plant, the best way to convert fuel into electrical energy.
    The operation is as follows:
The air enters the turbine, where it is compressed and heated.
The fuel is injected to combine with the air, in this way combustion occurs.
Hot gas moves the turbine blades with certain RPM.
The blades connected to a drive shaft cause the torque inside an electricity generator (where the magnets move electrons) to produce alternating current.

    • @shakedbm3829

It's probably due to the notion of the purpose of the two engines. A gas turbine meant to produce electricity will have more of the heated gas do work on the shaft, while a jet turbine engine will have the gas be rejected through the exhausted producing thrust by Newtons third law.

The gas turbine can also use multiple sustainable fuels such natural methane, which is the most destructive chemical causing Global warming in its natural state, recovered from landfills, sewage treatment plants, feed lots, etc. and used to power the GE gas turbine which the methane otherwise naturally vents into the atmosphere cause major global warming.
It’s better to capture the methane and use it as a fuel vs allowing it to naturally escape into the atmosphere. By adding a GE Nox and Co2 scrubber to the gas turbine the results are ultra low emissions. A win/win/win.

Question: Does the turbine power the air compressor? And if it does, how does the air compressor compress the initial air that makes the turbine produce its first work output that powers the air compressor et al; or does the air compressor rely on an external power source initially?

    • @stufish73

Actually in newer units like the 7FA and 7HA the generator itself turns into a motor until 61% of the speed is achieved then turns back into a generator, what stuart mentioned applies on the 7EA and older units.

Big problem with ANY steam cycle: difficulty in getting efficiency above 30%. Huge heat input rqd to first boil the water. OTOH, you could use exhaust gas heat as input to a stirling engine, and hopefully see 50+% efficiency there. Just looking forward, not back.
