    Hey Dave, I have been metal detecting for 30 plus years. I have a couple of tips for you and who ever maybe new to the hobby. When you are using a double d coil, pinpoint in one direction, then when you get it, turn 90 degrees and pinpoint again. This is the best method and most accurate. Also when cutting your plug cut it on three sides and fold the sod back. This keeps the roots intact and give the grass a better recovery. I like to use a towel to put the dirt on to recover the target. Then you can pick it up and wave it over the coil to make sure you have the target. Then shake the dirt back in the hole. It keep everything neat that way. I like to leave the lawn like I was never there. Before you fill in the hole ALWAYS CHECK IT AGAIN! I have had many time where I found a pull tab then an old coin a few inches deeper . IF YOU ARE ON AN OLD SITE DIG EVERY TARGET!!! It doesn't matter what the machine says ID wise. Gold can fall in any range. I have found many rings that way.
    STAY SAFE AND KEEP DIGGING!

      I cut a squared box shape plug out and lay the dirt/grass plug onto a towel, you think that's alright? It almost always looks like I never dug anywhere. Lately I've been very angered by other metal detectorists in my area leaving 4''+ holes unfilled just off a trail or 2''+ holes in a public area like a park. I fear these idiots will lead to more metal detecting restrictions/regulations and give us a bad reputation.

      A few careless people spoil it for everyone. The reason I only cut the sod back on 3 sides, is so the grass can heal faster and it keeps mowers from sucking out the plug.

    AWESOME video Dave ...... and they say money doesn't grow on trees .... nope ,, it comes from the roots....
    ...I have used metal detectors for about 25 years and appreciate the respect given to dig only what's needed and replace the plug....
    ...The new technology is AMAZING and helps keep the hobby exciting and growing... Hope all is well with yourself and family...... Stay Safe and God Bless....

    John from Kent England.. I was passed a ace apex by another detectorist I was surprised how light the entire rig weighs.. all my machines are heavy say 3LBS hunting with this weight coupled with rucksack cameras phone spade is hard work up down dig a hole over 5-6 hours [beach hunting] at low tides on the Kent coastline.. no sand just pebbles [hardpack] and then having to walk back up the cliffs 😭😊 to be honest I have also looked at the Deus lite similar price range and weight the deepest that I have ever dug on a ring is 5 inches most rings that I find are on the surface! I just need a rig that hunts well and I will retire my heavy detectors ! my oldest find on the beach 1732 half penny on farmland bronze age! my flint tools Paleolithic Neolithic member NCMD I thank you for this video and wish you happy hunting👍

    That Apex looks like an awesome machine. It doesn't look like there is much top soil before you hit clay. You can raise the coil off the ground above the target and it will give you a rough idea of how deep the target actually is. The VOLUME of the target sound on those coins also tells you that they are not very deep. Very deep targets will have less volume and confirm that they are deeper. You can air test this by positioning the detector on the ground with the coil perpendicular to the ground and then swing the target at increasing distance. As you do, the volume of the target will fade the further you get from the coil. Looking forward to the next detecting video!

    This seems like a very interesting and fun hobby. I wonder how detecting on a beach by the ocean would differ from the woods as far as some of the things you’d find. Have you thought about taking a trip to the coast?

    You are finding many coins using that model metal detector and that is good that you are recovering many coins lost by boys scouts down through the years at that location.

    Dave, unrelated but could you possibly make a video on how to "Build an underground Refrigerator in the Eastern Woodlands?" Preferably with no equipment, just focus on the hole depth, how Nessmuck might have done it, etc. Thanks. Might be helpful to a lot of people coming up soon.

    How do people lose coins in the middle of nowhere in the grass? Doing cartwheels with bad pockets?

    • @benfrankog6111
      @benfrankog6111 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Reaching into their pockets for something like a cigarette lighter or flashlight, laying down on the grass, hunters going into their pockets for a knife to gut a deer, pulling their hands out of their jacket pockets, etc. I'm still amazed at how many coins there are out there even sometimes deeper into the woods.

    Will detectors pick up lead? Like civil war bullets? A guy at work was saying once that if he ever buried his gun he’d put a lead plate over it so it couldn’t be found but that doesn’t seem right, thanks

    im running a pitiful little quickdraw II right now and am having some luck (found 1st silver already!!!) but its just not as nice as i want plus my pinpointer sucks. ive saved 1000 dollars to buy a new setup. ive been looking at the at pro and max. i like the wireless feature of the max but looks like the pro is a better detector. if you had 1k to spend on an entire kit which detector would you choose? or another all together? any input youd be willing to share would be much appreciated

    It is amazing how much money is in the ground.... everywhere. Places you think no one has ever been are filled with coins. However, future archeologist will scratch their heads wondering why they can't find any coinage from 1965 on.

    • @benfrankog6111
      @benfrankog6111 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well said, it's extremely hard here in the north east to find any old coins pre-1965 as well. I'm pretty sure there are detectorists here that are primarily Gold/Silver shooters. I think many of these guys don't bother with the "trash littered" local parks which is nice though because I still find a lot of clad coins and some jewelry.
