It's clear that the Dynamic Island offers a lot more quality of life features than the lifeless notch. My only complaint with your test is that you chose to demo Google Maps on the Dynamic Island versus Apple Maps. I don't have the iPhone 14 Pro Max (yet) but I'm pretty sure if you long-press on the navigation using Apple Maps you get more information versus Google Maps. Otherwise yes, the Dynamic Island is a great addition to how you use an iPhone and once other apps take advantage of that space like sports scores, maybe a stock ticker, services like Lyft or maybe an update on when a flight is arriving/departing it'll be an even more useful tool that people will want.
@@eddybuyer1759 -- You selectively left out the word "quality". The term "quality of life" is very common when describing a feature that makes a product easier to use. For example: rubber grips on a pot you might use to boil pasta, which means you don't have to grab oven mitts to pick it up. Or better yet a built-in or clip-on strainer so you can drain the pasta without removing it from the pot. In the case of the Dynamic Island being able to see scores, the remaining time on a timer or incoming Lyft ride means not having to go into an app to see that same information.
@@Thatbeardedguy86 -- Gotta disagree with you there. I use Google Maps mostly from my desktop browser and it's mostly for work. Otherwise I use Apple Maps 100% of the time. To say it's "junk" is a gross overstatement and just a bitter claim. There are very few apps and/or services that are junk. Most every developer has caught up and are making quality apps and services. Clearly no one's perfect and I've been led astray by both Apple and Google Maps. But hey, to each his own. I'm not here to shill for Apple or Apple Maps. Use what works best for you. Other than TH-cam I try to limit my use of any and all Google products and services. They have more than enough data from everyone else on the planet. I'd just assume not be one of them.
coming from one year after the video released. not sure if it was with the update of iOS 17, but if you now use Apple Maps for navigating, the dynamic island will be actually showing how far till your next turn and signs for switching lanes will be popping off in the dynamic island. Think it is much more intuitive using Apple Maps on dynamic island right now.
i came from an se 2020 so I've never actually had a notch, but the island is really cool, i love that it shows things like battery charging or reaching 20 there instead of covering the whole screen. i'm a music girlie too, so i love the music cover when you're out of the app. overall it feels very modern and doesn't take up that much space compared to the notch, which i honestly wouldn't mind either
I fully expect apple to continue using the dynamic island for future phones. I like it, but its not enough for me to upgrade from 13 Pro Max. Ill wait the three years and then update like i have been doing
Disagree. I disliked the Touch Bar & thought it was useless, to be proved right just a few years later. The Dynamic Island actually works ergonomically cause you’re always looking at the screen. The Touch Bar was DOA because you had to look down at the keyboard to use it. Who wants touch keys? Nobody. So long as the Dynamic Island is expanded to the rest of the iPhone lineup (beyond the Pro models), they can make it a proper UI element. The only question is what’s going to happen when the camera cutout is shrunk further (or removed entirely) in the future. Are they just gonna keep the Dynamic Island without any cutout?
@@theconformist2399 they’ll probably slowly shrink the actual cutouts, and remove the software maybe 5-10 years from now (likely when AR glasses are more of a thing..maybe)
yeah thats exactly whats happening, i have the regular notch and it shows my focus mode symbol unless i open an application that needs to use the location
One thing I love is finally finally they fix the 20% remaining notification It always pop up on the screen on the old phones But now on 14 pro it pops up on the dynamic island No more distraction from playing a game etc
@@user-ix6bg3gn9x they do? At least for the game I was playing, the 20% warning still showed up on the side, it was even orientated correctly in landscape mode for me.
My conclusions are: you basicly have a notch, with 1mm of screen above it. and when you play music, the notch will get bigger, and literally has no added value, besides letting you know music is playing. I don't care, I hear the F*****G music. And the timer... I set a timer because I am busy with other things, like cooking. So the timer is turned on because I don't have the time to constantly look what time it is. And now apple promotes the dynamic island with a timer. Like heeeyyyy, now you can set a timer for 5 minutes, and look at the timer for 5 minutes to see it counting down.
what I basically try to say is. It looks nice, I agree. But it is not game changing and should for no one be a reason to upgrade if you have a iphone 11/12/13 pro. Think about your wallet. If your battery is under 80%, just replace it. save the money and go on a holiday with your partner. maybe a tropical island. Will be much more valueable than a spending a lot of money for minimal improvements
I hope the DI gets a bit smaller next year with the 15 models. This one looks like it’s stuck on the forehead. It’s always in the way, when you do video calls, watch videos etc. Right now I prefer the notch on my 13PM.
I have an iPhone 15 and upgraded from an 8 Plus so I wound up skipping the notch era but I definitely enjoy the Dynamic Island. Apple did a very good job with the flexibility options you can use Dynamic Island for
I much more prefer DynamicSpot, if u want the fontinuous Island, u can, if u only want the island when in use, u also can, so im happy with the android version, I also like the android app's customization. I cannot live without Dynamic Island/Dynamic spot on android now when listening to music.
2:23 The do not disturb icon does show up on the 13 but since the spot is already taken by the location icon, it’s not there. Which raises the question : is there an app/widget using location too on 14 too? cause that’s the only fair test that evens out the playground, and if that’s the case, well, 14 fails too cause it doesn’t tell u ur locations is being accessed…. Either way, I think we can all agree that it’s more important to see that, than the do not disturb icon.
There are multiple instances where the island is more intrusive and feels like a gimmick i.e. the timer and google maps, definitely not a reason to upgrade over the 13
They should have just made the notch smaller (width of the dynamic island), had the same sort of animations with it, and made it the Dynamic Notch. The island stands out too much and intrudes further into full screen stuff.
honestly the red dot for screen recording on the dynamic island is the most underrated feature, just press on it and it stops recording no need to pull down for the control center
I have the Dynamic Island and I personally don’t make a lot of use of it. Sometimes you have a pop-up which appears below the island instead of inside of it, too. So if you have the notch, I’d recommend you keep it until it’s actually time for you to upgrade
2:29 sorry to point this out but you could see that you were on the focus mode in the Notch phone too. I think it didn’t show up earlier because the gps symbol was taking the spot.
Revolutionary? It's more gimmicky when you can achieve the same thing even without it.. and the fact that you need to pay more for it is ridiculous. That alone is not worth the upgrade.
I'm on team C - don't mind it, don't love it Coming from an 8 Plus, to the 14 Pro Max, I never got to experience the notch, so it doesn't bother me at all I hope developers build new ways to use it, though But if they don't, I don't really care, it's just a little bit of screen
I was pretty gung-ho on the dynamic island and other features of the Pro but now that the 14 Plus is out - and I do want a bigger phone - I don't think it's that big of a deal to have all those extra things, especially in the way I use my phone. I'll be ok with the Plus.
The dynamic island is NOT the only deciding factor when choosing to go for the PRO iPhones. But I guess people have to complain about everything and you have to give them reasons to do so if you want them to watch your video.
It’s fine - not terribly exciting, but fine. I prefer it to the notch, but my upgrade was because of the camera, not the island! I think a few Apple commentators WAY oversold it.
I went from a 12 Pro Max to the 16 Pro Max and I hate it I miss the notch it takes up way to much space in videos and games. Edit I feel like they could have implemented the same software with the notch and not effected watching videos as much as it does. It really bothers me I miss the notch so much I've had it 5 days so maybe with time it'll change... Here's hoping.
It’s painful for me as I desperately need and want to upgrade - if only it was on the 14… worse part is I doubt the baseline 15s probably won’t have this preventing me upgrading again
I think the baseline 15's may have it. I'm not too sure but I have hope that at the very most in the next 2 years the base iPhone will have the island.
The Dynamic Island is certainly an upgrade over the notch, but it isn’t worth upgrading for. It’s just a nicety. The reception of the Dynamic Island was really hurt when it came out because the rumor mill was absolutely positive that we’d be getting under screen Face ID, but instead we just got a notch that disconnected from the bezel.
I like the notch more, don’t know why maybe because it had become symbol for iPhone and now with island iPhone doesn’t feel like iPhone but still usage wise island is better
Tbh I think dynamic island is ugly makes me never want an iPhone, since 1. Samsungs and all have the smallest camera bit 2. AT THE TOP OF DYNAMIC ISLAND THERE IS SCREEN, AT LEAST WITH THE NOTCH THERE WAS NO MISSING SCREEN
iPhone 14 Pro Max still has a notch. They just change the name. It’s still a dynamic notch but nice of you though. Really help me out in my decision making to upgrade from my iPhone 12 pro max to the iPhone 14 promax I don’t know yet.
Me personally after having notches and chins on my phone since like forever, I love the dynamic island and for many other reasons now sure it’s nice that on android they have a little hole punch for the camera, but there’s many of reasons why the dynamic island is so great in my opinion. Also on the iPhone 15’s and the newer phones, they’re just lighter using the titanium and for some reason, the phones with the titanium and the Dynamic Island just gives a really smooth filling to the phone. 😅
🐬 I am in the third camp. I like it better than the notch but right now it’s pretty dull and incomplete. It’s less of an eyesore, but it’s not very useful. I appreciate the extra space it frees up for status icons, but I barely noticed it.
U actually do see when u in a focus for 13 pro max; just wait till ur location arrow goes away, if u rematch the video after he says it it actually shows the crescent moon whe the location arrow goes away
I’ve got an 11 and it tells me if I’m in what focus mode. Not sure if it’s just changed with the smaller notch although it wouldn’t make sense since there’s more space there
I don't know why I prefer the notch instead of the Dynamic Island, I mean the DI is really cool and all but I think is kinda weird in terms of aesthetic...
You had the 2 phones in different modes… this DRAMATICALLY affects the outcome. Maybe try again, as I think it would be nice to see the difference when done properly.
I far prefer the look of the island over the notch, but it’s certainly not a reason to upgrade by itself.

It shows the directions on the dynamic island as you are driving, and you can fully use other apps on your phone while knowing at every moment when you need to turn, then a small popup to make it bigger and alert you temporarily shows up when you need to take a turn. It's so useful, that even coming from a FOLD device that has a huge screen, this is less intrusive than the fold's PiP mode.
Apple Maps shows directions in the Dynamic island. So far I think it’s the only Map app that uses the dynamic Island for directions. Every other map app I tried so far just shows the little location icon. I guess the developers haven’t fully updated their app to fully use the dynamic Island
Is that practical tho, looking at small arrow instead of full screen when using map
May not be but hey it’s there. Gives it life to the Dynamic Island. It’s not disturbing or adding to your productivity lol
@@riickyworld1 I see haha, but still I wonder if it is ever practical, I don't need to see other things like music album cover while I'm doing something else, but I will see how it goes when I able to afford and get the iPhone 16 Pro
By the way, my name is Johnny and I'm a freelance logo designer, would you love to have a logo for your channel or your business or any sort of artwork you like, I would love to craft something for you and the fee can help me reach my getting a needed new phone goal sooner too, let me know if you interested to make it happen! :-)
Just bought an iphone14. Waited for the 15 to drop to save money. Never heard of this feature. Don’t care and am particularly not interested in extra complexity. Informative vid.
Looks cool but is it worth an extra £100? Don’t think so.
Just got the 15 about 5 days ago, I thought the island was just another place for the camera but was pleasantly surprised when I found out all the cool stuff it can do!
Otherwise yes, the Dynamic Island is a great addition to how you use an iPhone and once other apps take advantage of that space like sports scores, maybe a stock ticker, services like Lyft or maybe an update on when a flight is arriving/departing it'll be an even more useful tool that people will want.
life features ahahahahah
@@eddybuyer1759 -- You selectively left out the word "quality".
The term "quality of life" is very common when describing a feature that makes a product easier to use. For example: rubber grips on a pot you might use to boil pasta, which means you don't have to grab oven mitts to pick it up. Or better yet a built-in or clip-on strainer so you can drain the pasta without removing it from the pot.
In the case of the Dynamic Island being able to see scores, the remaining time on a timer or incoming Lyft ride means not having to go into an app to see that same information.

Because I'd say like 99% of people use Google Maps. Even on the iPhone. Apple Maps is junk.
I love the Dynamic Island! It is a huge upgrade from my XS Max to a 14 pro max!
I fully expect apple to continue using the dynamic island for future phones. I like it, but its not enough for me to upgrade from 13 Pro Max. Ill wait the three years and then update like i have been doing
They will put it on all the future iPhones until they find a replacement but that will be a long time from now
Apple has created a chaos into their developer team cuz now they have to make a separate API for both phones for the same apps
Touch bar 2.0
Except this can easily be brought to many more devices unlike Touch Bar
At 2:19 I’m pretty sure the focus mode does show beside the time, it’s just that at that moment an app in the background is using location
yeah thats exactly whats happening, i have the regular notch and it shows my focus mode symbol unless i open an application that needs to use the location
One thing I love is finally finally they fix the 20% remaining notification
It always pop up on the screen on the old phones
But now on 14 pro it pops up on the dynamic island
No more distraction from playing a game etc
I doubt these fancy-looking animations won't show up in landscape mode
@@user-ix6bg3gn9x nope it doesn’t
I use the iPhone 15, previously I had the 11 with the big notch, and I can say I really like the dynamic island.
3:13 bro just doxxed himself 💀
I’m excited for what dynamic island will soon become.
Dynamic Island sucks.
I hope the DI gets a bit smaller next year with the 15 models. This one looks like it’s stuck on the forehead. It’s always in the way, when you do video calls, watch videos etc.
Right now I prefer the notch on my 13PM.
The notch is worse, get over it.
@@fijiwill2237 how’s it worse?
@@the_letter_b Exactly, that would have been the best thing.
Bro just doxxed himself
honestly the red dot for screen recording on the dynamic island is the most underrated feature, just press on it and it stops recording no need to pull down for the control center
I'm on team C - don't mind it, don't love it
Coming from an 8 Plus, to the 14 Pro Max, I never got to experience the notch, so it doesn't bother me at all
I hope developers build new ways to use it, though
But if they don't, I don't really care, it's just a little bit of screen
Do not disturb is in the same spot, there is only space for 1 icon there. That is why you didnt see it
It’s weird seeing Twitter
One of those things that excites you more on the keynote or what could turn into rather than the actual usefulness. Not worth the upgrade from a 13pro
I upgraded to the iPhone 14 pro from the iPhone 12 Pro Max, i like it and use the island all the time
I honestly like the look of the notch but the dynamic island can do a lot more
I was pretty gung-ho on the dynamic island and other features of the Pro but now that the 14 Plus is out - and I do want a bigger phone - I don't think it's that big of a deal to have all those extra things, especially in the way I use my phone. I'll be ok with the Plus.
Just upgraded from 11 pro max to the 14 pro max and whew. What I was missing. I love the island and 120hz is actually super noticeable.
To me it's just a gimmick that Apple is using to sell people on the notch. The island actually takes up more of the screen. Good marketing strategy.
It doesn’t though? Its surface area is in fact smaller.
@@gfyGoogle it does. Play video and you will see it’s lower than a regular notch.
That's just bs its wayy smaller. You might need glasses. lol
I wish they added a dynamic notch in a software update
The dynamic island is NOT the only deciding factor when choosing to go for the PRO iPhones. But I guess people have to complain about everything and you have to give them reasons to do so if you want them to watch your video.
What state-of-the-art technology by Appe!. Sooo amazing! lol
It’s fine - not terribly exciting, but fine. I prefer it to the notch, but my upgrade was because of the camera, not the island! I think a few Apple commentators WAY oversold it.
dynamic island is such a great upgrade
I went from a 12 Pro Max to the 16 Pro Max and I hate it I miss the notch it takes up way to much space in videos and games.
Edit I feel like they could have implemented the same software with the notch and not effected watching videos as much as it does. It really bothers me I miss the notch so much I've had it 5 days so maybe with time it'll change... Here's hoping.
The single punch-hole on Android phones is better imo. Subtle, less distracting AND gives you more screen real-estate.
@@kindofanmol but Apple phone's need the other sensors for a significantly better face id than andtoid
Great Video 👍.. thanks for the comparisons .. thanks for all the info ℹ️
2:25 you do see you are in the focus mode, it was just the location icon hiding it
I love the usability of the dynamic island, yes, but… for some reason I love the notch and it’s look so much more than the notch.
I would like to experience Dynamic Island but switching from my iPhone 12 to iPhone 14 Pro/ Pro Max is not needed because my iPhone 12 goes great😎
I just switched from android and bought a iPhone 15 pro max and I like the Dynamic Island
Why? I tried the same thing on a friend's recommendation. Very quickly went back to an android, thank you apple for your return policy.
Opinions aside, I feel like instead of having a cut out like the island, they could just move everything into the notch.
Thanks for sharing. Blessings on your day 🐬
I really wish we could just get a holepunch. Even the cheapest Android phones look better at the top of the screen.
I love about the dynamic island if you go to live activities then it will display the score on the island pretty neat
Personally I just like the notch better than the island I don’t know why it’s just I think the notch makes it feel like an og iPhone
Me too I like the notch
People have been always nagging about the notch size , even when it got reduced in size , but saw the dynamic island and fell in love🤦♂️💀
I like the dynamic island and its idea, but as an iphone 13 user, i dont think its a reason by itself to upgrade
it's a very useful feature. i added a feature something similar on my android. it's not the best and not the smoothest but it's useful
I honestly really like Dynamic Island, I’m starting to wish I got a 14 pro instead of the 13 now..
Tbh I think dynamic island is ugly makes me never want an iPhone, since 1. Samsungs and all have the smallest camera bit
2. AT THE TOP OF DYNAMIC ISLAND THERE IS SCREEN, AT LEAST WITH THE NOTCH THERE WAS NO MISSING SCREEN
Misaka x on. macOS or windows will let you have Dynamic Island on older devices
iPhone 14 Pro Max still has a notch.
that dog is too adorable
Very informative. Thx
I got my self the 14 pro max and it’s amazing y’all should get it if y’all ever get the chance
I can’t wait to start using the dynamic Ireland when I get the iPhone 14 pro
U gonna go to Ireland?
I’ve got an 11 and it tells me if I’m in what focus mode. Not sure if it’s just changed with the smaller notch although it wouldn’t make sense since there’s more space there
Also you forgot about live activities, AirPods connectivity, Maps directions, and how it handles landscape mode
Very nice and complete video thanks 🙏
Basically, the dynamic island is just extra convenience in terms of features and use. Definitely a nice-to-have, but not necessary
I don't know why I prefer the notch instead of the Dynamic Island, I mean the DI is really cool and all but I think is kinda weird in terms of aesthetic...
i have to kinda agree. it may be due to the fact that its „less intrusive“?
Great in-depth video.. Thank you ...
3:53 loaded up faster of the 13 pro max 💀
You had the 2 phones in different modes… this DRAMATICALLY affects the outcome. Maybe try again, as I think it would be nice to see the difference when done properly.
