The American SIG 556 is absolutely not the Swiss SG 551, despite the SIG 556 sharing design roots from the Swiss rifles. The core of the design is the same, but the American SIG 556 has design elements that attempted to further integrate the Swiss rifle into U.S. adaption.
Through it's years in the commercial market, the SIG 556 has been loved and hated for various reasons, but how well does this copied rifle perform on the distance course? We find out.

This is a bittersweet video for me. I had one of those rifles. Ultimately what killed not just that rifle, but Sig as a whole for me was the fact that my rifle (short has tube, 16 inch barrel) had a catastrophic critical parts failure with less than 2000 rounds. The recoil spring obliterated itself into about 30 pieces. I contacted Sig, who sent me a new spring after informing me that it was a known issue for the serial range of my rifle, that the heat treatment of the springs was done improperly. No recall, no "voluntary upgrade", just "we'll send you a new one when yours breaks", and they didn't send a new roll pin for the piston. This rifle, for me, is the start of Sig being almost as disingenuous as Springfield Armory.

About 12 years ago I purchased both the Sig 556 and the 556R both Gen 2s. My 556 came with the Swiss style sights, grip and Swiss folding stock with a similar quad rail to the one in this episode. My 556R has all Swiss style handguards, grip and folding stock. Takes Bakelite, steel and poly 762 mags and has been ultra reliable. The Gen 1s had a lot of issues and is responsible for most of the bad rap these rifles get.

I have an early model 556 and it is a tack driver. I added the newer lower and it is now a 551a1. I am happy enough with the sig 551a1 that I didn’t feel the need to pick up a sig 551 from jdi. I loved my gen 1 5.56R, except for the lack of steel reinforcement in the magazine well. It was totally reliable, very accurate, and had a great trigger. When the Gen 2s came out with the aforementioned steel reinforcement, I contacted Sig USA about sending it in for modification. My magazine well was chewed up but the gun still functioned. After multiple calls and emails Sig told me they would not service the gun as I had voided the warranty by "deliberately damaging the lower." I ditched it and haven't owned a Sig product since. Probably never will again.

I think if SIG Sauer brought back the SIG 556 and or mass imported the SIG Switzerland Neuhausen SG 55X series it would get a lot more traction than last time. These guns came out in the early 2010's shortly after the sunset of the Federal AW Ban, my point is, it was too early for this and Americans didnt really know what it was. Yes it's a Sig pro sp2022: as a policeman here in France, it's our duty pistol. as we know it's the first heavily order of pistols since WW2. it's a polymer frame, compact pistol, quite bulky but i found out quite easy to shot. It's a duty gun so it's not fancy, it's accurate enough to shot precisely at 20 meters, for experienced shoters,. I love that it's have several securities, on it. Some people said that was an order from the french government to Sig Sauer, with the nomenclature -secure pistol, no to expensive, reliable: and it's do all of the three. in 2018 france order more of it to sig sauer USA, so now we have a mix of old german sig and new americans one, the difference is that in the german one, the sight has an "i" shaped mark instead of the three dot. the grip changed a little as well. the pistol was made to last untill 2022 but here in 2023 it's remain our service pistol, as most of law enforcement is satisfied with it (police and gendarmerie as well) only specialised services use glocks

Traded one afternoon at a big gun show in Orlando for the newly released Fime Molot Vepr AK 47-11. Had to kick in $100 to complete the deal. No regrets as the Russian AK’s were then banned from import and the rifle is amazing along with doubling/tripling in value. But I’d like to get another Sig 556 one day. My 556 had the HK style drum for the rear sight which I liked.

  • @user-xk1sy9pl6z

Agreed. The Swiss 55x series were called the "Rolls Royce" of AKs for a reason. As a previous owner of mutiple AKs, as well as multiple Sig Sauer 556s, my experiences demonstrated to me that the 556 is superior to most AKs. Having had a Swiss Sig 553, I can say that though the Swiss rifles had exquisite workmanship and build quality, the 556 reliability and accuracy are second to none. Replacing the atrocious furniture with genuine Swiss furniture helped immensly. Hogue did make a quite nice pistol grip for the 556, but I am unsure if they still do. What hangs over my mantlepiece now? My sig 556. 2,000+ rounds and going strong. Your mileage, of course may vary...

My 556 SCM has been nothing but good to me. Took a few hogs with it while at Fort Benning, spent some time with it on Burroughs Range topped with an M150 ACOG. Thing is a beast with the right ammo. Mine loves 69 grain Federal Gold MM or Black Hills 69 SMK, usually printing clover leafs at 100y, and doing right around MOA with good 855.
I carried an AR professionally for a while before deciding to pick this up as my first 'serious' semi auto rifle and, in retrospect, made the right choice. The only reason I'm apprehensive about using it today is cost. Being discontinued finding parts is spendy. SIG, bring this sucker back!!!!

In 2015 I bought a P556 Swat 10” pistol that came with a Sig Romeo red dot.
I wasn’t pleased with the fit and finish quality of the pistol and sent it back to Sig to refinish the receiver due to scratches during the manufacturing process to install the qual rail. Sig in all its customer service glory chose to use a sharpe to cover up the scratches instead of refinishing. Also the fitment of the upper and lower receivers had so much slop I could place thin washer shims on the takedown pins to stop the racket.
I sold it but, still have a P522 Swat with its 2 bolt recalls.
    Great idea but, poor execution!

The heat coming off the gas piston is mostly due to a combination of design “issues”:
    1) the Swiss longstroke system is contained in a tube with a spring layered around it. Probably creating and insulating a lot of gas that can’t vent off in all directions like an AR or even an AK.
    2) the American version of the 55X series doesn’t have the ceramic/metal inlaid guard that the handguard fits over
Combination of those two things would have alot of radiated heat coming out of the front of that gun

I still have mine from back in 2008. I did take the quad rail off and put the swiss style plastic handguard on it to save some of the weight out front. It is a heavy rifle compared to something like an AR-15. But that makes it such a smooth shooting weapon. Soft and fairly accurate. I have a love for my sig 556. Is it my go to...no. But its not leaving my collection any time soon.

556 used to be shit upon you are correct…
Having on several since 2008 everyone’s number one goal was to turn them into Swiss rifles and it never actually panned out unless you had Estes do a barrel swap.
Even then you were over $3000 into the gun once you got a Swiss lower furniture and barrel.
I think the hate was mostly because you could not get your hands on genuine Swiss rifle without spending 12-15K, they had that legendary status.
Now the 55X series is in more abundance and the 556 Becoming “collectible” status,
I believe people just appreciate it for what it is…
Side note: I am kindly asking our Viking friends to start importing AK5C pistols 😁

Having done my military service in the Swedish Air Force in the early 90's, the green colour on our weapons wasn't something I reflected over (my service rifle was the almighty kpist).
But now, I really appreciate that colour when I see it like here, on your rifle. It looks very good :)
    Cheers!

In my experience, SIG rifles are excelent. Have used SIG 510 and 540 , both in 762x51. . Good in the mountains, the deserts, the windy plains of Patagonia and the cold jungles in my country. Also carried H &K G3 , M 4 , Galil and test in the range an FN SCAR , but if i have to go to war… give me a SIG.

I love it. reliable and decently accurate, I shoot it out to 300 Yards all the time with a 4X optic. I have always loved the look of them, I got a Rubberized pistol grip and extended magazine catch because the ergonomics where meh.

Love all my Sigs nearly a quarter of my 20+yr gun collection are Sigs From preban Sig 551, a mint 551-2 and a SBR'ed 552. Civilian 553, 522 and 2 556's later ones NOT the fish gill ones, MCX, MPX, Rattler, and a Spear Lite along with most handguns. 2nd only to my HK's. Also buy guns I like in pairs so have one NIB and one to shoot so I have a 2012 556 classic NIB. Anyway the US made 556 I own and or shot has been very reliable, eats everything steel, brass, 223 and 5.56 etc. Have to agree with the video the US made Sigs are close in looks and build. But the quality is not as good a the Swiss guns. If you shake it some guns with have small rattles but its a very soft shooting and is very accurate, the 550 type guns just feel so comfortable, classic look and well built.
The US 556 had a really cheap stock, the stock lock tab would break off, so switching to a Swiss stock is a must, the cocking handle rubber can rip off and some parts like the hand-guards would not be a tight like a Swiss gun. So many people would switch out the US parts with Swiss parts. Same as how HK guys would do with their import or clone guns. They would switch out alot of parts with German parts. Which is not necessary or smart as you should only change the parts that matter not for the idea of just getting German or for Sigs Swiss parts
The US Sigs have had their problems like with the 556R or every early SIG USA guns. I usually do not buy early batches as they usually have bugs etc.
Lastly Sig USA has a problem of NOT announcing generational changes. They would just change or update things without saying a word or have late model guns that use left over early model guns. So when buying any new Sig US gun do your research and check it very carefully before signing off on the 4473. Pardon the long rant. But love my Sig 550's THE best AK ever made.😊 No offense love all my AK's as well.

Great video as always! I would recommend a krebs 556 extended safety if you don’t have one installed already. I recently installed one on my 551 and definitely helps getting a more consistent purchase on the safety lever since it’s kind of a reach with the factory grip being fairly wide.

Regarding the heat buildup creating the mirage effect, it would be fun to try a more active cooling solution just to see if it would make a big difference. For example a hand guard that's heat shielded on the top part, sealed all around but with ventilation channels running inside it. Then a small battery powered fan on one end taking care of the circulation and then let the hot air exit somewhere where it doesn't affect the sights nor the shooter. Not super practical, just as a fun experiment :)

If mirage becomes a problem, perhaps adapting more Swiss parts from the sniper model may help such as the mirage band? The adjustable target grip also looks like a potentially useful change.

Why are they seemingly unaware that...
    - The 551A1 lower was available here as an entire model variant as well as a lower only accessory [the lower is not serialized]
    - The 556 lower was intended to accept STANAG mags in order to work around 922r concerns as the Gen 1 has Swiss sourced parts including the barrel, recoil spring and tube, bolt assy, and charging handle. The upper & lower mfrd. in the US
    - The original polymer handguards do not have this heat venting issue that resulted in the mirage complained about
    - The Gen 2 'Fishgill' furniture not only entirely eliminates the mirage concern by design but also is much sturdier overall than the original while offering the same practical use as the aluminum versions while being half as heavy. These now are sought after by collectors that do actually use their rifle having learned that looks are irrelevant relative to function. I own two sets of these and they rock.
    - Sig USA mfrd. a specific rear sight that was sold as an accessory that attached to the rail, to be used inlieu of the emergency use 'Popsicle Stick' folding rear. it works great and is sought after. I own it as well. Also Samson mfrd. a unit at the time that functioned well. Both "click" and neither are garbage as is the MFI cosplay product. Both are now difficult to find, and owners aren't letting them go for less than past original retail. I'd scored mine new ages ago at a discount.
    - The original grip was a Sig USA design intended to be more upright than the SG550/551. It's actually more comfortable IMHO. At the time though folk were installing lots of other grips including MagPul, which only requires a minor modification to the rear of the handguards plastic with a file or dremel. #Easy
    - The hooded fixed front sight of the 556 was intended to co witness with installation of an RDS or optic.
    - Which is why the entirely practical receiver rail and forend rail on the Fishgill furniture variant is there. To enable install of optic options and secondary accessories toward real world use. Rather than being a dedicated videogamers collectible of an '80s era usage rifle/carbine/pistol.

People were expecting Swiss quality, which was a mistake. The Swiss rifle barrel and receiver are timed so barrels can be removed and swapped with nearly no consequence. SIG USA cut costs by threading the barrel trunnion without regards to timing it, installed a barrel and then drilled the gas hole and front gas block retaining notches. The consequence is that if you pull the barrel off and try to put a barrel from another 556 on it; it will not line up at all. The barrel threading is different from the Swiss also, as if it mattered anyway...again, it wouldn't line up.

So I shit you not, I was shooting my friends SIG 556 and after I fired the gun, the bolt failed to go forward. So as any sane guy would do, I unloaded the mag, mortared the damn thing. And the damn thing birthed a spent casing over a live round. Definitely a highlight at an indoor range, but after reloading the rifle. She fired like nothing happened. So in conclusion, something funky happened with the round, and I got to mortar my buds SIG 556.

    Hello.
Are they not designed as are 556 guns primarily 0-300 yards. They also made a "dmr". I don't believe they were designed for extended use with magnified optics. I have shot my 556 patrol out to 450 with an eohtech and it was not an extended session.
So mirage was not a big issue because I danced around it given the real limitation you are addressing.
I also have a gen 2 556 r and same, same as you say. I enjoy both and am glade I was able to pick them up back in the day. Like you I like them and intend to keep them a d run them when I can. There are videos of Gabe Suarez taking the gen 2 556r out to 600 yards with lapua 762x39 6-8 years back.
Thank you both for all you do, keep on keeping on.

25:05 or pick up some high quality hk diopter sights that attach on to your pic rail and save yourself acouple bucks which is why sig arms gave you the permanent pic rail. The hk416 sights are an option and are actually designed VERY SIMILARLY to the sig diopter (or maybe vice versa on that) . Point being TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR MODERNIZED MURICAN “sig” pic rail , it’s what it’s their for. Practicality of us, just like why you bought the rifle with the stanag receiver which imo, is a great concept.
And after if you want a classic high quality sig uppper, search out a sig upper on the used market there are up all the time and slap it on. I have never tested this myself, but ide love to see if the guys at 9 hole can see if it would work and what the performance would be like!
