    Thanks Travis, This has been a huge help. Been reading that you "should" plant 3 or more of a cover crop (legume, grass & broadleaf) All I have is a 400 sq ft garden and a weed wacker, and am unsure how to cover crop with the tools that I have.(mainly terminate with just a weed wacker) I am in the same zone 8b.

      Cutting with a weedeater works just fine. We cut most of ours with a walk-behind, non self-propelled push mower.

    Hey Hoss - curious to know why yall pulled all your tomato plants already instead of leaving them until frost? Better use of the garden area during the slow production from the heat of the summer I assume? We're in North Texas and production slows way down in July/August but comes back in September a bit (albeit not like prime time in late spring/early summer though).

      @gardeningwithhoss  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Our tomatoes never make it past mid-July down here. They've been pulled for several weeks now and we already have a cover crop in that spot.

    9b Phoenix AZ Our temps have been HOT 105-115+. I have small amount of in ground bed and several 4x8 raised beds. Is cover cropping a wise when you balance out benefits and water costs? will they even grow enough to be useful?? we have another 6-8 weeks before it will start becoming more veggie plant friendly and i can put starts out without frying.

      Depends on the specific needs of your garden. It really helps us because we have high disease and weed pressure. The cover cropping helps break those cycles, so definitely worth it for us.

      Sure we will. We have several videos we did last year showing different techniques for terminating a cover crop.

    Same for garden . Do i pull it all up? Or till under. Newat all this

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Any cucurbits (squash, cucumbers, pumpkins, melons) and any nightshades (potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers), we pull and remove from the garden because those plants can harbor insect eggs and fungal spores. Most everything else can be mowed or tilled into the soil.

    I’ve always heard cover crops work better in diverse mixtures....will you do a test plot where you mix all your cover crop seeds together (literally all)

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure that would be the best idea. We like to combine them based on relative maturity dates. If we were to mix buckwheat with some of these others, we'd have to cut them way too soon because buckwheat matures so much faster than the others.

    • @loganyoutube4818
      @loganyoutube4818 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hoss Tools I always forget how long your growing season is...here in New York you can put buckwheat in late August early September and the frost will normally kill it before it sets seed

      Our homestead is right at 2 acres. We have 10 garden plots which are approximately 1,000 sq. ft. each, so about 1/4 acre of total garden.
