    I feel the same way about washing dishes. I have a dishwasher, but I wasn't raised with one. Sometimes I like to wash them by hand... it's just therapeutic. Enjoy your raking!

      I always like washing dishes by hand. So much faster than loading and unloading a dishwasher.

    Back in the day, 1986 or '87, we had a pretty good snow in Athens. One of my apartment mates was an avid golfer. He called someone he knew at the UGA golf course and got us in to eliminate squirrels. Let's just say we hammered 'em.

    Travis , I'd like to know how deep you like to till in between plantings and is there a deepth you prefer . I've always gone as deep as the tiller will go , but with a shallow rooted cover crop it might be better to till less deep .

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We always go as deep as the tiller will go. This time of year when the soil is baked dry, it doesn't always penetrate as deep as it can though.

    great Channel. How does a cover crop suppress nematodes?

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not all cover crops will suppress nematodes, but some of them will. Those include Sorghum Sudangrass, Lacy Phacelia and Mustard.

    Yep... gotta get the spring garden OUT! tired of fighting weeds and feeding pests. It's so hot in MS 8b that the okra and peppers are the only healthy looking plants left. Do I have time for fall corn?

      @gardeningwithhoss  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yeah. Plant fall corn at the end of August, early September.

    what planting chart do you use? Totally understand spring and fall plantings but get confused as to when to start seed vs planting transplants. Trying to follow along with your (wonderful) videos but it becomes somewhat confusing. Struggling in 9b near Phoenix with local planting charts conflicting. THX!!!!

    Travis are Iron Clay Peas tasty? If not then why not just use black eyed peas as a cover crop. They do the same thing as a cover crop and also provide nitrogen to the soil, but they are tasty.

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Never heard of anyone eating iron clay peas. We have a bad issue with pea curculio down here which stings our peas. That's why we don't grow field peas as a food crop. And these will be incorporated when they flower, so we won't let them go to seed.

    What would you recommend for after tomatoes in fall zone 6a? My dad has been growing his tomatoes in the same place for years. He has a small yard and can only do his 70 plants in this one area. This and last year hes had problems with his indeterminate tomatoes not getting very big or producing well. I'm thinking of recommending cover crops to him but not sure what to plant in October.

    In your experience what are the best fertilizers to put on watermelons I have around 200 plants this year and are too far along to try different fertilizers but I would like to prep the soil this fall for next year?

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We start with 20-20-20 and then move to Calcium Nitrate. Always adding MicroBoost with either.

    Would you suggest cover crops on raised beds?

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Certainly. Something with a smaller growing habit like buckwheat or iron clay peas would work great. Then take a pitchfork and "turn it in" when it flowers.

    When do you plant a fall garden in the south?? Most things take 60 to 90 days to mature so would a cover crop have time to grow? This is confusing to me!

    Pickle worms took out my zucchini squash. I kept my cucumbers and yellow squash under insect netting so they were fine until the mildew is taking its toll. Is it too late to try to grow a sugar baby melon and another corn crop? I'm growing in raised beds.

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably too late on the watermelons, but you can grow a fall crop of sweet corn if you live down here in zone 8 like us.

    I have a patch in my yard where I want to plant some cactus in the ground. Problem is, there are a bunch of perennial, woody weeds that have lots of roots under the ground and keep coming back even if they are covered by pine straw or cut back. I'm afraid that if I plant my prickly pears now, the weed roots will out-compete the cactus and my plants will be stressed and tiny. What is the best way to get rid of weeds that are very hardy and established in the ground?
