      I have owned a lot of sub $100 headphones and the build seemed very simple and plasticy but solid. I liked the build on the shp9500's more than the $150 fostex mk3's.

    I never fell in love with my shp-9500s, they sounded very good for the $55 I paid. Generally though, I found them thin and bright, kind of like a superlux 668 upgrade. I actually found myself liking the Koss ksc75 more, even though I can't technically say their better. I will say the 9500's seemed to have a very tall/vertical, in the front soundstage, compared to my other headphones, if that makes sense. The 9500's would be great for anyone who does not have upgraditis. Then again the $16 ksc75's would be even better.

      sorry if I am late but the shp9500 sounded ehh at first but after about 12 hours of burn in they sounded phenomenal for their price. but I can agree the Koss 75 also sound phenomenal for their price.

    SHP 9500's are baby HD600's for a quarter the price. Best audio purchase I ever made, but I'm still looking for the right upgrade.
    BTW love the list in your description, it lines up with all my research so far. Thx for the video

      I know what you mean. SHP9500s are incredible. I was looking for an upgrade too - tried HD6XX, AKG K702 - I was disappointed! I ended up selling them because I still liked the SHP9500s better. You should try Koss KSC75x for $17 on Massdrop. They aren't as good as SHP9500s but they are incredible for the price - and it feels like you aren't even wearing anything.

      @@brydon10 I got a SHP9500 and returned it recently, it's too bright for my taste and some female vocals are hash. I don't quite understand the hype about it.

      I've recently bought another pair of HD 6XX's. I can now appreciate the more neutral / warm sound of the 6XX. I still like the SHP9500s, but yes they are a bit bright, but still way more comfortable than the 6XX. Also I bought some HD 599SE for that great sale price ($100 USD). I really like the comfort and laid back sound signature of them.

      @@lal7103 I had that notion as well when I first got the shp9500 but for some reason after using it for weeks it sounded warmer, maybe that's just me adjusting to the sound or the drivers needs a little burning in.

  • @Benri05

    I had that headband adjustment issue in my shp9500 as well, what I did is open up the adjustment mechanism and slightly bending the metal part that makes contact to the adjustment grooves. You can easily access the insides by just removing the headband by pulling on the tabs (it'll take a little force, don't worry it won't break) then you'll see 2 screws that holds the adjustment mechanism in place.

  • @pasta8793

    SHPs have better slightly soundstage and imaging than the HD600. IMO, the shp's have a more accurate treble response. HD600 sound like they take a dip in the 5K Hz range. I've noticed that difference after using HD600 for a while to mix and master my music and over EQing just about that range. The HD600 just have slightly better "details" and resolution, but that's to be expected considering they're 300 Ohm. I also would have to disagree that the 600s have slightly more bass, to my ears, the SHP's have slightly more bass, although they're virtually identical to me in regards to bass. I find that the SHPs perform so wildly different when driven by different amps and DACs, most likely due to their 32 ohm impedance. When over driven, they definitely can sound sibilant.
    Again, i don't think it's completely fair to compare these two anyways, but since they are so similar in terms of sound profiles, I have to give it up to Philips for what they've done with these. If Philips could mark these up to $300 and use the cash to improve the build and sound overall, the SHPs would without a doubt blow just about any open back headphone out of the water. Philips is a massive conglomerate with manufacturing scale far greater than Sennheiser as a company so it makes sense that they could make headphones at such low cost. They just don't have the "name-brand" recognition like Sennheiser does in regards to the headphones, so they don't have the flexibility that Sennheiser does to mark up headphones based on their intangible reputation.
    Also, Philips definitely cut corners in terms of build quality. I haven't experienced the headband slippage mentioned in the video, but the headband and earcups are made of cheap lightweight plastic and all of the padding is cheap cotton mesh that is not replaceable so you can tell a majority of the cost went strictly to the drivers and tuning the audio and not much else. The cable is also a very flimsy run of the mill 3.5 cable. \

    Are the 600s better... well, yes. The comparison is not unlike, "Are the Stax 700s better than the Senn HD600s?" Well yes they are... at three times the price.

    I'd have to agree that the comfort level on the SHP9500s are only fantastic until you move your head. I find myself having to readjust the headphone every 5-10 minutes from just normal movement while sitting at my desk. I can't speak for the HD600, but I have the HD660s, and I love it. The clamping force is more comfortable than the almost negative clamping force you get on the shp9500s. I switched between both during this video, and even listened to the Tarzan soundtrack with them both (because I had it saved because it's amazing), and the semblance of the shps are insane on this album. the comfort is actually better on the HD660s's than the shp9500 because of the clamp force keeping them in place. We both have narrow heads though, so that could be the difference right there.

  • @hehehehe9240

    Nice Review. The SHP9500's have that large soundstage. That's their main advantage. Even besting HP's that cost WAY more. As for tonality, and frequency range quality? It's subpar. Even lighter on bass than the 600's, way too uneven and bright in the treble, and very grainy throughout the spectrum. The only way they beat the 600's, is in soundstage. Otherwise, they are no where near in the same class as the 600's. For open back HP's under $100? - Yes, the SHP9500's are prob the best. For Gaming? Yes, 9500's are IT. They are essentially a poor man's 600. Best headphone overall at or below $100? - I would say the ATH-M40x or Hyper Cloud X/Alpha.

    • @Tigerex966
      @Tigerex966 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      sph 9500 for the main headphone and sennheisers as a backup.
      Senns have a slightly smoother more refined sound, not better, just different, more laid back, so for classical, jazz, they might fit better.
      they have a boosted midrange and that is a good thing, especially for vocals, but the bass seems to be dialed back to lower than neutral. highs are very clean and clear
      9500 are on a whole other level when it comes to games, the wider soundstage and pinpoint location accuracy puts the 600 to shame in games thats is.
      For music they actually have bass, its not basshead level, but it has impact and i think better for more modern fast paced music, 808,s, bass guitar, while still having nice mids (definitely not as nice as the hd600, and slightly boosted highs i think.
      in any event we all hear different.
      9500's at $60, with a full return if you do not like at amazon and new egg, is a no brainer and a good back up or main headphone depending on how you hear and how you use them.
      you can mod both headphones a lot of ways, replace the ear cushions, cables, add different padding and even make both closed back headphones if you like.
      Again if you game the sph 9500 or "far far far far" better than the sennheisers, even sennheiser fanboys will admit that, movies about the same, with the wider soundstage, more bass and pinpoint imaging just brating out the clearer highs and more accurate and boosted miss of the hd600.
      for music, depending on what styles i have to give the edge to the hd600, mainly because of the mids, cleaner more refined highs, even though i think the bass is lacking in volume. but thats what eq is for.
      there are actually two versions of the sph 9500
      original is the phillips sph 9500, they have more boosted highs and slightly less bass, i/4" adapter included.
      the new one is the philips sph 9500s, they have slightly less highs and slightly more bass.
      You do not need an amp with either one, but an amp will bring out details and dynamics more.
      but be careful a powerful amp will cause these and other low ohm headphones to distort or even blow a driver, so make sure your amp has a low gain switch.
      the sennheiser hd600 is the exact opposite, they need an amp to come alive, to little power and you will env er hear their potential.

Maybe because of the better soundstage on the SHP9500, the 600 sound a bit less 3D, but with more detail. For me it's a clear winner too. I like the 600 even better than most Audeze. Maybe HD800s sound even better, idk.

    good review, many people are sensitive to highs and some are not, so opinions will vary wildly, definitely, as well with head size and comfort.soundstage is great on both, but much wider on 9500.
    The best bet is to get both, as both are good quality for plastic headphones.
    And both have excellent sound quality for music and games.
    You may have got a defected pair of headphones on the 9500.

    • @Tigerex966
      @Tigerex966 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot of the sibilant highs may be caused by using an amp, as the 9500 unlike the 600 do not need an amp to sound their best, it helps, but if too powerful can introduce sibilant highs and distortion, as is the case with many, if not most low ohm power requirement headphones can do.
      but on low gain, an amp does help.
      Try them both again without an amp from your phone and rereview.

    • @mentalrectangle
      @mentalrectangle 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oddly, I am sensitive to highs. I have a couple other headphones that nobody else complains about the highs on which I personally find sibilant. The SHP9500s have always seemed smooth and totally free of sibilance to me, which is weird because I can tell they're bright headphones, maybe a few db more treble than 'the line'. But for some reason I just... don't mind, since it's high quality treble.

      Even with the fact that they are in a completly different price range. these headphones have similar frequency response, and both are open back headphones. This comparison would be very useful to many new audio enthusiasts who might want to know what the price tag means in the audiophile world. I think that this is a great video, and is very useful to many. I personally watched it to find a cheap headphone for a friend who wants a more flat sound for mastering, without spending too much.

      After a recent listening to HD650. I would actually go for the 650... Much higher highs than the 600. But, you keep the quality in all the other areas.

      One Man's Guide What? the 650 are actually more mellow, for some even veiled, ergo worse highs compared to the 600, but had better bass presentation overall. Did you heard the 650 stock or modded?

      @@RJJC His pads are probably worn on the 600 versus the 650
