It's up there with the Forth River Bridge in Scotland and the Brooklyn Bridge in New York which were both built around the same time (Brooklyn Bridge a little earlier).. all gobsmacking examples of huge engineering feets of the period... without the aid of electronics and computers.... that we still use to this day. The origin of the iron of the Eiffel Tower Parisian since 1889, the Eiffel Tower, by its metal, comes from the Grand Est region, more precisely near Nancy in Lorraine! In 1887, Gustave Eiffel needed more than 7,000 tons of iron to make the centerpiece of the 1889 Universal Exhibition: he launched a call for tenders won by the Fould-Dupont forges of Pompey, in Meurthe-et-Moselle. The company of blast furnaces, forges and steelworks of Pompey supplied all the iron necessary for the construction of the Eiffel Tower and also took care of the puddling. Before being processed, the ore was directly extracted from local mines. Exactly 18,038 pieces of iron were produced by the Fould-Dupont forges for the Eiffel Tower. We can still see their "signature" plaque affixed to one of the pillars of the Tower today!
