  • A special ABC TV Compass Episode on the foster care crisis, September 2013.
As demand for Foster Carers in Australia increases, Compass meets several foster families to learn about the challenges and rewards fostering can bring.
Almost 40-thousand Australian children live in 'out-of-home-care', but already there aren't enough foster homes to go around. Now, foster care providers in NSW are reaching out to previously untapped families; gay couples and single parents among them.
So what does it take to be a foster parent? Who currently welcomes foster kids - many of whom have suffered abuse or neglect - into their homes and lives? Why do they do it, and what are the rewards? At the start of "Foster Care Week" Compass finds out.

In our city there is a program to keep children safe at home. The parents are ordered to parenting classes and counseling. The classes can minimize the amount of time children are in foster care. Parents need help to ensure the children are cared for when they go home.

Seriously... Why do half these comments hate on foster care? Saying God will hate us for saving kids, gay couples shouldn't do it etc etc etc

Alex Krause those hater comments are from people that are probably uber religious & narrow minded. If I was an abused kid, I wouldn’t care if my parents were gay. All I would want is a home and love. Good for anyone who’s willing to foster, gay or straight.

Wow such beautiful stories, and how lucky are those 3 kids to get placed with such awsome families. I have personally seen a couple of horrific foster carers in the pats one lot pair I even reported and actually stunned me and made me very angry when nothing was done about them, and the child suffered some horrendous abuse. Perhaps things are getting much better, and potential carers are getting screened much better, or at least one can only hope.

I feel so blessed coming from a big Irish family and community. Raised for generations living close to each other. Of course, not without its ‘nosey neighbours, fighting siblings, in-laws bickering, spousal rows’ etc, but all raised understanding 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8. .....So watching these kind of videos, kills me. But seems like all you amazing people who foster are natural nurturers as well who totally get the concept of what Love truly is....I so admire you all 💕💕💕

I’ve been trying to get my mum to get a foster license but she already has 4 kids! And she’s a single mother. I almost ended up in foster care. My father oded after almost killing my mother, she was in critical condition and was on the brink of dying but she made it. I was lucky

There are many different types of foster care situations. The most common is reunification. Which means the foster parents are working with social workers and the courts to reunite kids with their biological parents. A great deal of these parents are down on their luck and just need some help getting their lives in order; they don't have someone else to take of their children while that happens. When a parent completes all they need to do by court's orders they can be reunified with their kids and in a lot of situations this is the happiest outcome for everyone involved. Children don't want to be yanked from their homes and parents and be told they'll never return unless the parent is abusive.
In other situations the biological parent is not able to do what the courts ask for them and the child can be adopted by a foster parent.

If you notice. Compass run housing as well just like housing commission does. There all linked child trafficking buisness enterprises. Just as facs is . There all connected with Centrelink ECT ECT and rich elites . Buisness men ECT and they as well have rich elite buisness men freinds and family who run their private private franchises like challenge foster care allambi premier housing and even employment agencies like max employment salvos. ECT mission employment and their all in connection with jails police force. And churches It's just one big massive criminal Enterprise. Of curruption. And evil . And God awaits them all for judgement day. And that's a fact . We all gunna die and meet the maker. So beware what you do to make an income because money is the root to all evil . Would you steal somebody's children if you weren't being paid to do it. No you wouldn't. Theirs your answer. The parents would kill you if you tryed steeling their child. So it's obvious. They who steel children only do so because they know they have police protection. Because they work for government ⚜️i©️🤔👁️©️👁️

I have known many kids in foster care or children’s homes, some of them hate their parents, others still love them but just acknowledge that their parents weren’t the kind of people who were meant to have children, but rarely do they say
“I wish I was back to living with my parents”

"if a gay couple can provide them with a steady stable home" Gimme a break, its one form of abuse exchanged for another. A man married to his pet dog can give a steady, stable home but that doesnt mean hes not going to emotionally affect the child. This is the result of a corrupt and liberal nation. Poor kids need a mother and father.

I see you are more upset about homosexual parents more than you are abuse. I would like to inform you more often than not it is their heterosexual parents who abused them in the first place. Also homosexuality is being attracted to the same sex human partner and having a loving relationships which is completely different than having a relationship with an animal. As the video instated kids get lost in the system and those amazing people made the choice to take care of kids when they did not have to.
