I was dumped by social services at the age of 18, they told me I had to move out of my foster home a week after I turned 18, if it wasn’t for my amazing foster mother I really don’t know what I would have done, or I wouldn’t be the person I am today 😊

They let me out at 15 when I wasn’t even old enough for a hostel. When I was 18 and old enough for a hostel room it was around £1500 rent and minimum wage for my age was about £2 or £3 per hour. We’re f*ck from the start. I’m 27 and still struggling because of this sh*t start. No one seems to understand how bad it is and it’s happening right under peoples noses.

Army would be a good choice. My pal who grew up in foster care got all university, rent, allowance paid for until he left education.

@@MrJeffHeadthe problem is why the hell would we fight to protect a country that doesn't even care about us?
I've thought about it long and hard. If the government is able to pay foster carers up to 18k a year per child, why couldn't that money be spent on actually helping low income single mothers rather than scrutinizing and demonising them.

I hate the idea if santions, it comes from old Victorian/workhouse mindsets of punishing the poor with worse poor situation, and call it "motivation/encouragment". Makes me so angry that we can do this to the most vunerable in our society. The whole narrative of poor people being blamed for being poor is nonsense, as if it's a personal failing not a situational or structural failing. In a fair society no one would need to worry about food or housing.

This has to change. Having experienced living next to a care leaver I can honestly say these kids are far too young to be living in their own. There needs to be long term care plans for after they leave care to slowly allow them to adapt to living independently. Just being responsible for bills as well as working and running a home is often far too much responsibility for these youngsters to handle. Often they have mental health issues from their upbringing that need addressing. This often impacts their ability to manage day to day. Aside that Surly allowing these kids to fend for themselves makes them extremely vulnerable to predators and abusers. Why can we not assign life long social workers for those who want or need them? Why is there no life long term care plan in place for these kids? It’s so sad to think they’re left to fend for them selves by the councils. These kids /young adults need someone behind them, to believe in them and to help steer them from the bumps and tribulations life throws at us. I can only imagine the system in place must make these kids feel like their on their own. This must bring up so many buried emotions. We must do better that this! How is this preventing any chance of future damage leaving these kids to fend for them selves.

They are not abandoned. Try reading the Leaving Care Act 2000 before you comment. There is a lot of help out there for care leavers. Many do not want the support as they want to do their "own thing" and blame everyone else when "their own thing" goes wrong. I know this from personal experience. You have one side of the story here!

You have a good point. This is what happened to me at 14 years old i was taken away from my parents and put in foster care all because my parents had refused medical treatment for me. I know this sounds strange but I did end up returning back home will fully and kind of regret it because I want to move into my own place but its much harder but if I had stayed in foster care I think the process would've been faster...

I left care 9 years ago.. I was 16 years old and because I was on a section 20 I had no one and nothing to turn to. At 16 there was no one or no help available at all was so hard as I have no family either. Social service don’t think about children at all my life was destroyed by them. I was taken from my mother to be put into care homes where we was abused by multiple homes. When living with my mother there was no abuse however my mother was using drugs yet we was taken to be physically and sexually abused for years then thrown out at 16 to defend for myself. Things need to change

Can't go in tesco because of anxiety but had no problem with going on TV and speaking to the presenter about his life. And saying as so many care leavers he's starting his life off in debt?? That's a lie. From the date you make your application for universal credit you have to wait 5 weeks but get that backdated so your first payment is more than double. Also you get a leaving care grant of £2500 for essential items for a new place and anything left over is yours to do with as u like. You also have the social services that can give you emergency money and support upto the age of 25 even paying for any course you find and having to relocate you if necessary. . I'm a care leaver and was in hostels from 16 to 21 and then when I got my first flat I lost it within 2 years but that was down to my own fault. I think the council I was under do more than enough. And it's normally down to the people who they hang around with and lack of motivation.

As a care leaver who is a qualified social worker in Northern Ireland and mainland Britain you are WRONG on so many levels here
Every trust has different policies and procedures in regards to finance
Universal credit ARE meant to back date the payment but this persons relevant trust ISNT required to
Instead of judging people who are raising awareness to the difficulties that care experienced kids faced like you and me try to have some empathy
I can almost guarantee you pushed away the service and didn’t accept the help you could’ve gotten from 16-21
Crack on mate your time until 25 is running out fast
Kids in Northern Ireland only get until 21 to make it into uni

Children are commodities unfortunately. The money they accumulate whilst children and funding they get all of these entities can only be continued if they get these people to become commodities in their adult age either through criminalisation or mental health. The girl will lose her baby. Social workers are devil incarnated. They are cruel and destroy families and traumatise adults and children. Most the kids were removed from their parents unnecessarily and unlawful. What the social workers or any one can do? These care leavers had been treated without love most of their lives and separated from the ones they love.

As someone who's lived in semi independent I wanted help but there was none provided the one I use to go to was poorly set up so I packed what I needed to take with me left by letting them know sofa surfed a couple of times and eventually settled into my own home with my partner and son so I guess it's different for everyone.
