DEF is injected into the exhaust through the SCR or Selective Catalytic Reduction. This reduces the NOx output of the engine. Similar to cars catalytic converter

man that new combine is awesome it has all the bells and whistles on it and it has good visibility and it has cameras it sounded so mean when started it up
Hey! I'm an engine development engineer. The purpose of DEF is to reduce oxides of nitrogen. Since a diesel burns non-homogenously in the combustion chamber, the lean portions produce NOx or oxides of nitrogen. The only way to reduce them is to inject DEF into the exhaust, which is urea and a few other things. The urea reacts with the oxides of nitrogen (I don't know the exact chemical reaction, I'm sure google can tell you), and allows a catalyst to remove and treat the exhaust, this reduces the tail pipe emanations of NOx. Gasoline engines will create NOx as well, if you operate them lean, but since combustion is homogenous, running rich or stoich reduces NOx significantly. Anyway, DEF is an emissions thing only, the engine doesn't need it to run. So, a lot of modern diesel vehicles have software that will idle the vehicle if it runs out of DEF.
That's quite a machine! Dad worked for John Deere for yrs as a mechanic and was pleased by those green machines. That muffler fluid crap that has to be used does nothing except pad peoples pockets!

any of the people born in the 1970s and 80s remember when the whole point of emissions was key things including keeping nitrogen out of the exhaust now we're putting it back in
The machines have sure advanced than when I left rural Minnesota in 1982 to join the Air Force. I often had trouble knowing where I was when I woke up in the middle of the night on a tractor or combine.
I believe that most of farm size units like MF, I got to say your farms in the US are B.I.G, will use containers atleast 1000l refilled with the same time as diesel containers. 2-4 tractors, few semi sized trucks, pick-up trucks and combines, when they all are upgraded, no idea to use little jugs to refill; big DEF containers like diesel and smaller pickup towed container trailers to distribute/refill machines on the field when working.
@@grantdubridge7995 it does say on the jugs do not refill. The companies obviously want you to keep buying the jugs lol I drive a diesel and manufacturer states they are to be discarded and not refilled. Much cheaper to buy DEF from a pump instead of individual boxes so people do refill to save some coin but if they don't have a pump near them they obviously chuck em.
We upgraded to a 780 this year from a 680 last year that we spent over 20k in repairs on. 780 has been problem free so far. Like their it is very muddy here. North east arkansas gumbo is on another level
U should make a vid on hunting and I know how dangerous farming is I live in a beef and poultry farm sometimes we plant beans and corn but usually not in Missouri keep up with the good work
I actually worked for the company that made exhaust systems for CNH (Case / New Holland) and CLAAS. DEF, or urea (synthetic cow urine is how it was described to me), is used to break down the nitrous oxides in diesel exhaust into its base components by selective catalytic reduction (SCR). So cool to see an end-user talking about this. Not a farmer but I love your videos.
@@jwhitley101whitleyfarms9 Nox is more for ground level ozone which affects respiratory function. It's not really a climate change thing, but rather a human air quality thing.
New subscriber here. The DEF is 32.5% urea and 67.5% distilled water. You have a dpf (diesel particulate filter) that filters out the soot or black smoke then it goes into what's called a decomposition tube where the def injector sprays the def into the exhaust and mixes with the exhaust. It then goes into what's called an SCR catalyst (selective catalyst reduction) which causes a chemical reaction with the Nitrogen oxide emissions (NOX) and converts it into nitrogen and water. So all that is coming out of the exhaust in the end is nitrogen and water. They run the engines hotter for the dpf to stay hotter and extend the life between cleanings which increases NOX emissions so they came up with the SCR and DEF system.
We are running corn today in the rain we have to dry them down. The moisture is at 26 percent. We have 2 combines runing a 9870sts and an s660 with 12 row chopping heads. Our grain cart is on 8370rt and I'm runing our 9560rt on our chisel 2630 ripper. Nice to see another farmer runing today.
💥 I bet you’re getting as much done as possible while this weather cooperates. Maybe some dielectric grease would help with that plug. Keep on tractoring 👍
Dielectric grease can be a "catch 22" with dirt and how often the connector is left open to the elements. It's not a bad idea as I've used it on light bulb sockets, trailer wiring connectors... to fix and prevent corrosion those are also not multiple contacts side by side. I think this is why Deere probably would recommend to leave it dry with no dielectric grease. But if very careful I would be willing to put a little tiny bit inside the female terminals with a small flat blade screwdriver... especially on the contact for the conductor(s) that is the culprit. More is not always better... "that is what she said" lol
It is, same percent urea content (32.5%). We just have several registered/trademark brands of DEF in the USA, such as Peak BlueDEF or CoreFluids NOxBlue. It's just easier for us to call it DEF.
I just watched your entire Dakota Micro Camera ad, been a while since I watched a whole ad. Well done! Love your stuff. Love the kids and dogs, oh, and you too.

Just saying. But the plastic jug should be rethought

Ours used to be addicted to government juice... Used to be...
You must have put yours through a 'program'....
@@MillennialFarmer I know nothing I know nothing!

I know you must be so proud of Onyx following you and showing an interest in the farm he will be a great help to you from 12 years of age to 18, then the door slams shut for four long years while he is off to college...
any of the people born in the 1970s and 80s remember when the whole point of emissions was key things including keeping nitrogen out of the exhaust now we're putting it back in
The machines have sure advanced than when I left rural Minnesota in 1982 to join the Air Force. I often had trouble knowing where I was when I woke up in the middle of the night on a tractor or combine.
Saving the planet with DEF, one plastic jug at a time.
In theory that plastic jug can be recycled... in theory.
@@tbac2432 So are you pro science now or against?
Your comments go either way, right now...
@@Cragified or, refilled.
I’m on the fire department, and I’ve seen more and more grain bin accidents in the state of Minnesota in recent years.
Enjoy the new ride - even if only a loaner. Love seeing the new stuff being used. Have a good and safe harvest. Take care 'Spin'
U should make a vid on hunting and I know how dangerous farming is I live in a beef and poultry farm sometimes we plant beans and corn but usually not in Missouri keep up with the good work
Southeast Missouri is way too rough
Really enjoy your videos. Very informative for us non farmers. Definitely different from the dairy farms around me. Oh and GO PACKERS 🤘🏻
Is that PB blaster at 20:00? I know a certain company that might not like that haha
But it does work the best
Scott B facts wd-40 is overrated
Lol
It’s amazing how you got to use that combine on the year it was so wet. So might say it’s blessing. Thanks for videos.
I'm watching while I unload corn!!
Good morning and good night. Thanks for the laughs.
🤣 Didn't hear any Wrenches come out . Definitely a good thing.
DEF reduces Nox emissions. The ammonia reacts with the Nox and produces water (H2O for sciencey types) and nitrogen gas (N2)
Also known as Obama mufflers for fake climate change hahahaha
They run the engines hotter for the dpf to stay hotter and extend the life between cleanings which increases NOX emissions so they came up with the SCR and DEF system.
sound like you need a camera to help put the header on.
Great video, that JD S780 is what you call a weapon of mass destruction,
Love the videos y’all and nothing runs like a Deere
cornfedwyteboy2 nothing runs like a deere except when a cats on it ass
Fendt does even better...
Guys guys we all know case is better y’all Deere fans just won’t accept the fact
Amazing to watch that combine run. About time you got a draper head going on that farm.
16:34 me in most situations lol
Man that S780 is one fine piece of machinery i tell ya.
Seems like a bad ground if the connector is still giving you issues
We are running corn today in the rain we have to dry them down. The moisture is at 26 percent. We have 2 combines runing a 9870sts and an s660 with 12 row chopping heads. Our grain cart is on 8370rt and I'm runing our 9560rt on our chisel 2630 ripper. Nice to see another farmer runing today.
so the theory behind DEF, is with the SCR canister, itll take the NOx in the exhaust and turn it into nitrogen gas and water vapor
I am now going to perform multiple calibration procedures... Zach... you're the best! 😁
💥 I bet you’re getting as much done as possible while this weather cooperates. Maybe some dielectric grease would help with that plug.
Keep on tractoring 👍
A RITTER BIT WILL DO we’re getting
G snow on Monday
Isaac Schute Oh no, where are you at?
A RITTER BIT WILL DO Wisconsin
Dielectric grease can be a "catch 22" with dirt and how often the connector is left open to the elements. It's not a bad idea as I've used it on light bulb sockets, trailer wiring connectors... to fix and prevent corrosion those are also not multiple contacts side by side. I think this is why Deere probably would recommend to leave it dry with no dielectric grease.
But if very careful I would be willing to put a little tiny bit inside the female terminals with a small flat blade screwdriver... especially on the contact for the conductor(s) that is the culprit.
More is not always better... "that is what she said" lol
@@isaacschute6761 I hope not. My roof is getting replaced right now.
I'm in North East Minnesota.
Zach, You are something else. Jim
is DEF the same thing as Addblue we have on Euro6 engines?
I bet it's
Yea
Yes it is
It is, same percent urea content (32.5%). We just have several registered/trademark brands of DEF in the USA, such as Peak BlueDEF or CoreFluids NOxBlue. It's just easier for us to call it DEF.
But few people know... You can use distilled water in place DEF.
He seems so happy to start that thing

It was nice that you got experience running a quality machine in Montana. Thank you for your videos. I grew up with J I CASE tractors M F combines and John Deere seed drills . family went to Gleaner, Lexicon and extra green seeder, MY nephew Chris thinks he bought a combine
Did the beacons turn on when the tank was full on there own he was out on the cat walk when they turned on
Yes
In my new Holland combines for the last 10 yrs
3/4 full they do like 4 revolutions every 30 seconds
Then at completely full they stay on full time
So the chaser bin driver knows where each combine is and what order to chase each one without excessive radio chatter
