It’s an example of another story that could be quite good but fails because it’s attached to an existing title for the purpose of seeking to sell tickets! What I would’ve done is set a film based of impatient lore about the miners with the staff ‘surviving’ until Dawn and say it’s an adaptation to serve as a prequel!
Now I wouldn't actually mind that film. One that would serve as a prequel to set up a game where you're not reliant on choices or a gimmick like Happy Death Day. - Liam
I wish they coulda made it on a snow mountain. But I really don't understand why they made it like happy death day, its weird. I hope they can make the movie work but, this movie does not feel like until dawn.
I wonder if you even listened to what the Director were saying. It's not a full retelling, its an expanding universe.. Just like how The Fallout show didn't touched anything that the games has already done
I get the expanding universe element. It's a safe and clever way of letting us know it won't be a carbon copy because this game cannot be a carbon copy. I'll have to see how this is all handled but I have so many questions going into it! - Liam
Maybe it could be set as a prequel to the games where Peter Stormare's character is reveled to be Dr. Hill at the end of the movie like maybe he walks into a psychologically lab or something for a job interview and while he's being interviewed, the other person asks for his name and Perer Stormare's character could say, "My name is Alan. Alan Hill." Bool movie turns to black and the title of Until Dawn shows up on the screen with the song of O'Death plays over the credits that would be an awesome way to call back to the game while still being set in the same universe.
You get to repeat until you make the right choices. You know just like in the game, where it’s all about sticking with your choices and one of the main themes is “The past is beyond your control” 🤡 All the daytime stuff and lack of snow kinda bugs me aesthetically. But yeah I’ll watch it sure…
This feels like a dark picture Anthology game that they turned into a movie, and there’s 5 Main characters in the movie from what we see prove me wrong. I’ve never been more disappointed and angry for a movie and this is my favorite game ever. :( I can just see the box office bomb
Oh this film was definitely doomed from the start. There is no way the film would have been able to squeeze like a 6-8 hours of Until Dawn gameplay in a 2-3 hours film and even if they did they would never capture the beauty of a choice based adventure. I never had high hopes for the film especially after I saw the borderlands film. Me and my friends were excited to see it and when we saw it, we found that it never captured what was so special about the borderlands games. Transitioning games to films or films to games is always a risky business but it has been done well with titles such as Batman, Spiderman, and Sonic the Hedgehog. Honestly I do think the film looks good, my only problem which is probably everyones problem is that they are linking it to a well known video game which is causing everyone to have high hopes. If they made the film a stand alone without linking or relating it to Until Dawn it sounds like it would be a really good film. Trailers are one thing but I guess we'll have to see what the film is like when it releases. P.S. Your cats are so cute I'm marching down to steal them!
I have seen so much about how the borderlands movie was rated the worst film of 2024 which is crazy to achieve that high level of critique! As for this game, I do think if they went for it, it should have been a lore movie. Not a universe expansion. PS: Thank you! They're my lil rescue kits! They'll be armed and waiting! But I don't think you want aggressive Nero fighting your 4! - Liam
The worst thing about the trailer it doesn't feel like until dawn like the studios just wanted to use the name and not even attempt to adapt the story. What makes the original until dawn work for me is it's simplicity. It wasn't some grand cosmic horror or overaly supernatural besides the wendigo. No, it was just about a group of friends who made very stupid choices and some of them, namely Ashley, if you chose to and others regret it. The game main thing is the consequences of the choices you make and how if you are not careful it can come back to bite you. They did a stupid and mean prank which resulted in one of their friends dieing, the other one going through mental issues, and one of then becoming a literal monster. I don't mind changes in a adaptation but I get none of what I like from the original in the trailer.
@ButterflyEffectPodcast i don't necessarily agree. Just tell a simple story about a group of friends coming together after a tragedy that they are partially responsible for, explore the characters and see how their coping, and finally have the wendigos be in the movie as a consequence for their actions and make a thrilling survival horror movie. I don't think it would be hard to adapt. Sure streamline things and cut certain things out but it could be done in a movie format. Though I think tv would be slightly better but if you had to adapt it to a movie you definitely could.
I feel like a concept like this could work… as a TV show. On a first playthrough of Until Dawn, you’re unlikely to get the full picture/collect every piece of lore. It takes repeated playthroughs to 100% the game. Having them slowly learn more and more about whatever monster after each “reset” would keep the spirit of the games intact. For example episode 1 could be character a choosing path a, dying, and then in the next episode choosing path b instead. That way the choices can butterfly effect onto other characters, like character a locking themselves in an attic, which gets character b killed because they can’t get up there. I just don’t think a movie has any time to do anything but the bare minimum of that idea.
They should have made this like maybe an investigation film like it happens after the game with a bunch of people doing a paranormal show there or something. Just expand the universe
Not a bad shout Tyler! I've seen cries for a prequel idea but an aftermath film could have been equally intriguing. It's certainly risky waters making this film how they are. - Liam
@ well if we look at The Quarry and Until Dawn as separate continuities or the same universe, I think they should expand it. Think about it, if the wendigos and werewolves exist in those games then what other supernatural connections can there be. Could there be more Wendigos, were did they come from, are there others in the area? That why i think a sort of sequel is kinda needed
I am actually really excited! I feel like Until Dawn is its own movie in a way. I want to see the universe explored. Honestly, they just shouldn't have branded it an Until Dawn movie. Or like if they said set in the "Until Dawn universe." They could have avoided the backlash.
So, I know there’s a lot of discourse of this movie saying “it’s not like the game”, which I thought AT FIRST, but now thinking it through, I actually do think it’s faithful when you look into the details, and I’ll give you two reasons why: 1. First off, in the original game’s mechanics, they use “the butterfly effect” where it’s up to the player to choose which is the right decisions to keep the characters alive at the end of the game until dawn (pun-intended), while in the film they do faithfully adapt that concept in a time loop, where now the characters know they’re in this time loop everytime they die and (to an extend) know what they’re getting into, it’s up to the characters to make the right choices to survive the time loop until dawn (pun-intended again), just like in the game. So in a way, not only that it’s faithful to the “butterfly effect” mechanic, the time loop is also an expansion of the original game’s mythology (which they also revealed that this movie takes place in the same universe as the game). 2. People have pointed out of being upset at the film being “a killer in a mask is killing these people”, but that’s what it was originally marketed in the original game as that’s what the original premise at first glance, because the marketing for the game never revealed any wendigos, purposely telling the audience that it was just gonna be a slasher game, than half way through, it changes genres from slasher to creature feature when the wendigos do show up, so when the filmmakers are telling us that, when the characters do relive the time loop, they are transported into a different genre of horror, so they might start off as slasher and survive a killer in a mask, but then the new threat comes along from the different time loops like the supernatural genres and survive from ghosts, in the zombie and survive from zombies or maybe even just like the original game, wendigos. So in way, the fact that it switches genres on you in the movie, is like how they did it in the game. Now, I know it might be a bit of a stretch for people who were turned off by the idea of what this new Until Dawn movie, but I wanna address to my thoughts on why they are faithfully adapting the original games mechanics while putting it in a different setting. So, I hope that people understand where I’m coming from.
I do appreciate the comment Elijah and I take your points on board! Just released the extended trailer reaction and the die hard fan in me still holds mammoth concerns over this concept such as how the wendigo infection can cross with the Groundhog Day concept but I'll try and be as open minded as possible approaching this movie. - Liam
There is so much wrong I don’t even know where to start. Let’s start with the very basics that should have been a no brainer. Where is the cold dark blue foggy ambient lighting, where is the snow and the night sky with stars, where is the mountain or the mine shaft or the sanatorium with Jefferson Bragg or Wolfie or any animals to be exact, they were a big part of symbolism in the game. Where’s the Washington family or their mansion or the wendigos or totems or anything. The snow and the mountain created a real feeling of isolation, chapter 3 was literally called isolation. The only way to get to Josh’s house was going on foot, hopping a fence and riding a cable car to the top of the mountain, there was no option to leave, Josh took the keys to the cable car. In this movie the friends just drive there, like just leave bro. Also the friends look around the house like they’ve never seen it before and they just rented it, it’s literally supposed to be Josh’s house, the friends are supposed to have been there before. Also the way they try to tie in the miners into this is a joke and shows how little the writers actually know about the game. Why the fuck are the history of the miners in the main blue house, why is there pick axes above the fireplace, the history of the miners had nothing to do with the Washington family and their house, the miners had to do with the history of the mountain and the wendigo curse (neither of which are in the movie). Also small attention to detail stuff being missed is just so disappointing, in most TV shows/movies it’s a challenge to find attention to detail errors, I found multiple in the first 20 seconds of the trailer, for example on the missing posters scene you can see a missing poster of the main character teenagers that just went missing and there’s also a missing poster of a miner that according to the game went missing in 1952. Why is the 1952 missing poster same font, wear and tear, color ect. as the modern day ones. Also the hour glass they showed. Is it really that hard to put a skull on the upper half of the hourglass like on the front cover of the game? Now for the casting, they just completely ditched it, I love how the only blonde girl in the whole trailer is one of the killers, not Sam, not Jess, some random killer. I’m not asking to get Hayden Panettiere, Rami Malek ect. to play 19 and 20 year old versions of themselves like some people are, but just recast the characters, I would have been fine with that. The one character you do recast is Dr. Hill, AND HES NOT EVEN A DOCTOR. His name is just “Hill” and when they show his character it’s some dude with a beard and a hat, bro looks like a park ranger, not a imaginary creepy therapist in a psychopaths head. This is a cool horror movie idea, I would have been completely fine with it if it wasn’t called until dawn. So now if another company wanted to do an exact adaptation of the game, they won’t anymore, because someone else already selfishly attached the name until dawn to their own movie and this movie is going to tank discouraging a remake. This is the adaptation we are stuck with. We could have gotten this movie under a different title and still had a chance at a real movie to game adaption from someone else. Also to the people saying “the game was already a movie so it’s good the story changed”, I completely disagree, the reason people have been specifically calling for until dawn, IS BECAUSE WE WANT UNTIL DAWN. If we wanted some random happy death day knock off then that’s would we would be asking for, nobody would mention until dawns name. If you are going to bring the name until dawn into the picture then you have to do a story adaption, no exceptions. I saw some people saying they were happy the characters changed because the ones from the game were annoying. Some of the characters in the game were supposed to be annoying, every single character had their own personality, literally every one of the friends was different and every interaction between each different character ended a specific way based on their past and personalities. I can already see the characters in this having no chemistry and no unique personal traits, it’s just going to be your average horror movie friend group that all interact the exact same. One last thing about how the story should have been written, I’ve seen concerns about being way to close to the games story line, copy and paste. I think what people are forgetting is how much the game left out that the movie could have made unique scenes out of. We never saw a visual of what happened to the miners and how the curse started, only clues and records and explanations. We never saw a visual of Hannah after Beth died from the fall, all we have is Hannah’s journal and some other physical remains like a grave accessories n stuff, that could have been a scene. You could have changed Josh’s saw trap with Chris and Ashley to another psychological trap to change things up but still keeping on track with the story. They could have expanded on Josh’s parents, the game did a terrible job going into detail of Josh during the year after his sisters death, did Josh show any signs of going insane, were his parents just rich pricks that didn’t care for him? They could have made scenes out of the scientists doing tests on wendigos at the Sanatorium, all we saw was the recording on the lil tv. This stuff is what the movie was supposed to clear up. This movie is obviously just a sad money grab with a very cheap budget and terrible one dimensional writers that have horrible attention to detail and little to no passion for the game.
Thank you so much Qweese for the comment! Loved reading this and it is a lot to unpack. I do think you're right in a lot of areas here and I still retain if you're bringing a choice matters game onto the big screen, the best way around it would have been a lore movie such as a movie about the miners. The groundhog day concept with wendigos and psycho's doesn't totally add up. I appreciate the read! -Liam
I get the idea of using the game’s concept of the “replayability” but one thing bugs me the wrong way. I don’t see any connection to the original game (except for dr. Hill even though it might just be a different guy) which is not a bad thing, but when you are supposed to be an adaptation of a cult game, you gotta have some story tie in. If I see it without knowing what the film was about, without the interviews, I wouldn’t even notice that it was based on a game And guys, pls don’t act like those people who thinks video game adaptations are impossible to be made, not only this “video game movie curse” is completely false. The only reason it’s a thing is because people tend to talk more about the big flops than the good ones. But also recently we’ve seen a lot of adaptations being very successful like Mario, Sonic, The Last of Us, Fallout, even FNAF despite the many critics, which are fair criticisms, the fans loved the film, it became a box-office success and sequels are currently in production with claims that they will improve from the first film. So right now, let’s just wait for the film to come out. If it’s bad, it’s bad, end of story. We don’t need to drag it through the mud. Besides if I have to choose between this and the Minecraft film, I know which one I’d pick.
You're not wrong that it's not always a flop, I do think on the majority they are and I hope this one doesn't follow the trend. I tend to think of movies like Mortal Kombat, the majority of the Resident Evil's or Assassins Creed for example but they have got better, especially ones that are series which allow the story and narrative time to breathe. I will have to wait until it comes out like you say but so far it's tough to see the correlations other that Peter Stormare, miners and possibly wendigo's. I just can't lie, I think we have to ask 'Did this movie need to be made?' if it does flop although I guess I can appreciate the leap of faith. - Liam
Ever since the movie was announced I was wondering “how the hell are they gonna adapt the branching story of Until Dawn?” And the answer is that they just aren’t.
People might think it sucks cos it looks nothing like the game but you know what it does look like it looks like a road not taken trailer which was made around about the time until dawn was released or at least it was put on TH-cam at that time but check out a road not taken until dawn and you'll realise it looks just like the until dawn movie so technically it's staying true to source material just not the one we were hoping for. but if the butterfly effect podcast is reading this check out a road not taken
You know, I'm kind of on both sides here. Left Because there are good examples of video game adaptions like Fallout, Sonic, Pikachu, and even Arcane. -But it seems Hollywood still refuses to see that appeal and instead continue its greedy and lazy. -You could still make the movie focus on what made the game so good and enjoyable. -The Last of Us tv show is a good example, why not try that route. -They could have made this like those Netflix interactive movies. -------- Right. I get it. Its another of those 'why didn't you just make the story 1:1 to the games'? But when you think about it.... -The Butterfly Effect is a big part of what makes the game fun. Making different choices, unraveling the mysteries. -There are so many paths to choose, so how can you show different outcomes and deaths. You would just be locked in one cohesive story, would some characters die. -The actors for the original game are too old for the same roles. Why not get new people that look like the characters, but capture their values well. -What about the hype of Until Dawn BEFORE the Wendigo twists? This could very well be Dead by Daylight entity situation, where each loop presents a different creature. -If characters die in each loop, do they remeber? Do they get smarter? Do they have to collect clues and solve the BIGGER mystery and escape the REAL TWIST.
Thanks for the comment Aqua! And it is true, video games can make great movies. This is a very tall order and only time will tell if they can pull it off but there are a lot of concerns from the go. - Liam
This is definitely like until dawn. Just because it isn’t an exact remake of the game doesn’t mean it isn’t until dawn They literally say they are expanding the world of it. They are even making a second game
@Colorsofdespair123 the point of until dawn was that your character deaths matters not that you can back in time and change the outcome, of course you can do that after, plus no mountain, no wendigo that we know of. So is this really like until dawn
Like I said there EXPANDING THE WORLD of until dawn, how do you expect them to do the branching endings with a movie, do you really want a movie with 30 different versions
The movie looks like an interesting concept but my problem is just the marketing of the movie. The director claims the movie has the same vibes but one look at the trailer just disproves that comment.
When they first announced that there would be a movie, I wasn't interested. Nothing that I've heard or seen about it since has changed my mind. The game is already cinematic enough.
I'm not impressed either. "Where is the chalet in Alberta, Canada?!" was the first thing out of my mouth when I saw the house. We need the TRUE Dr Hill, not an amateur red neck. Will this film be like Jabberwocky, an interactive choice based horror movie? Only if they do this can I see this mess being remotely like SuperMassive's original game.
It really makes me sad to see people judging something so harshly on so little info. Why would you even want just an adaptation of the game? It would just be inferior because in a movie they'd be locked into one path. The makers are fans of the game and they even have Dr. Hill in there. Give it a chance.
I will certainly give it a chance and keep an open mind but I won't lie, from this video I do not have high hopes with the different settings, tones and direction. It could be an alright stand alone movie and I'd love to be proven wrong! I guess we'll see when I do a movie review! - Liam
I don't want the exact game, I dont even need the same characters, but if you didn't tell someone that this was an Until Dawn movie NOBODY would guess that it is, which makes it pointless to even try to tie this movie to the game.

Except the fallout show actually felt like fall out. This movie trailer had nothing in it that gave off the feeling of unil dawn
@@ElasticGoblinthe cabin without the snow seems like it. The cameo from petter stormare who plays the therapist, and the wendigo scene.
I knew something was wrong when there weren't 8 protagonists
People are already saying it's more DPA than UD.
- Liam

I do see what you mean! I mean I'd rather less characters than 8 with 3 serving no purpose but I do take your point!
- Liam
1:01 Wendigo!😂
What on earth did I adopt?
- Liam
Peter Storemare going from a psychiatrist to a gas station attendant is disgraceful.
Man had a major career change.

The only movie adaptation in history where the video game cast are better than the film cast.
Never thought about that but you're probably right!

Thanks Micki! :D These cats are way more lethal than the wendigo's tbh...

If I see it without knowing what the film was about, without the interviews, I wouldn’t even notice that it was based on a game
And guys, pls don’t act like those people who thinks video game adaptations are impossible to be made, not only this “video game movie curse” is completely false.

Ever since the movie was announced I was wondering “how the hell are they gonna adapt the branching story of Until Dawn?” And the answer is that they just aren’t.
Literally!
- Liam
The actual trailer just dropped and I am so angry
It probably might be good as a stand alone, but Until Dawn it is not.
- Liam
This movie look really good and so scary awesome I should watch this so great because I never play that game. Bit the movie look really good show
People might think it sucks cos it looks nothing like the game but you know what it does look like it looks like a road not taken trailer which was made around about the time until dawn was released or at least it was put on TH-cam at that time but check out a road not taken until dawn and you'll realise it looks just like the until dawn movie so technically it's staying true to source material just not the one we were hoping for. but if the butterfly effect podcast is reading this check out a road not taken
Noted Mr Custos! Thank you!
- Liam
Until Dawn was set on a mountain in the snow
Not impressed by the house in the forest?
- Liam
It is until dawn!
You know, I'm kind of on both sides here.
Left
Because there are good examples of video game adaptions like Fallout, Sonic, Pikachu, and even Arcane.
--------
Right.
- Liam
To be honest i don't think that it will be a bad movie but its not really a until dawn movie
It could potentially but it begs the question why use the Until Dawn name?
- Liam
@ButterflyEffectPodcast yeah we just gotta wait and see
This is definitely like until dawn. Just because it isn’t an exact remake of the game doesn’t mean it isn’t until dawn
They literally say they are expanding the world of it.
They took out everything that made Until Dawn great except the name and called it a movie! XD
It’s is impressive.
The movie looks like an interesting concept but my problem is just the marketing of the movie.
The director claims the movie has the same vibes but one look at the trailer just disproves that comment.
Fully agree!
- Liam
Now is a good time to put in on delay and fix things. Even the remastered did better than the trailer even looks.
Could they go a Sonic xD!?
- Liam
I feel they should’ve changed the same like have until dawn in the name but : then something after to have it different i don’t know just something
I guess only time will tell!
- Liam
When they first announced that there would be a movie, I wasn't interested. Nothing that I've heard or seen about it since has changed my mind. The game is already cinematic enough.
Fair enough Flavo! If the movie flops I can happily disassociate the movie and the game. But I am intrigued to see what they'll conjure.
- Liam
Respect the movie, bro
I will do my best to go into the cinema as open minded as can be!
- Liam
I'm not impressed either. "Where is the chalet in Alberta, Canada?!" was the first thing out of my mouth when I saw the house. We need the TRUE Dr Hill, not an amateur red neck. Will this film be like Jabberwocky, an interactive choice based horror movie? Only if they do this can I see this mess being remotely like SuperMassive's original game.
Dr.Hill becoming Hill just looks wrong to me!
- Liam
Ehhhh😅
It really makes me sad to see people judging something so harshly on so little info. Why would you even want just an adaptation of the game? It would just be inferior because in a movie they'd be locked into one path. The makers are fans of the game and they even have Dr. Hill in there. Give it a chance.
I will certainly give it a chance and keep an open mind but I won't lie, from this video I do not have high hopes with the different settings, tones and direction. It could be an alright stand alone movie and I'd love to be proven wrong! I guess we'll see when I do a movie review!
- Liam
I don't want the exact game, I dont even need the same characters, but if you didn't tell someone that this was an Until Dawn movie NOBODY would guess that it is, which makes it pointless to even try to tie this movie to the game.
womp womp no one cares
Well that hurts my feelings. I hope I can mentally recover from this.
- Liam
How you know this movie going such. U didn't see it. You have no business talk
I've already seen it. They flew me out to Cali for a viewing with hors d'oeuvres and champagne.
- Liam
@ButterflyEffectPodcast you call it you want. Doesn't mean for you think movie going be bad. You didnt see it yet
