Ben Cathro is the best thing that has happened to MTB media since Rob Warner, he is so good to watch!
Cathro and Warner have been involved in mountain biking for decades. Any presenter can have enthusiasm, but not everyone has the experience.
I know it's a bold opinion, but I think Cathro is the very best thing that has happened to DH WC coverage ever. Although I'm still not quite over Claudio not doing course previews anymore...
I would also add Bernard Kerr with his LSDs

I get it that Vali expects more from herself, but it seems like she forgets what 2021 was like: In the first half of the season, two crashes kept her from either winning or having a much higher finish. And yet, on the final race of the season, it was a crash by one of the most experienced and highly successful racers - Myriam Nicole - that allowed her to take the race and the overall.
Truthfully, she's still a young lady. (I'm old, was her age about 40 years ago, so I speak from that perspective.) Everyone has a different age at which they reach the "I don't care what others say" point. Some people (though I doubt WC DH racers are among them) never really reach that point. She will mature a bit more and will be a real consistent force once she does. She and Finn Iles appear, to me, to be on a similar trajectory. A season or 2 more and watch out!

Racing is always dangerous, I marshalled for 5 years so I've seen first hand what two wheel racing can do but; with so many riders being injured and this course being described as more than a bit gnarly, at what point does track design cross a line between "testing" and actually dangerous? How long till a new course becomes too much?
IMO it's about artificial features. Sven Martin said something similar.
It's very rare that there is natural terrain that crosses the line from "difficult" to "dangerous".
Man-made features on downhill tracks should be minimal IMO.

Do they need to get new suspension after trials? Or do they have to run the same bike in the race?
Same bike used in the race, usually with just suspension setting changes
Often the same suspension is used for multiple races before replacement
Modern bikes and suspension are very robust.
Tyres and brake pads get replaced most.
Never had a 🤘 felt more appropriate

Track could be good, but I'm sad it had to come in Andorra. I think the bottom half of the old track has always been one of the coolest sections on the calendar.

Can someone please answer me here, what is the benefit of qualifying highly when you might be racing on a track that is blown out or new lines opening up that you won't expect after 200 odd riders have been down since your qualifying run?
A good qually run usually gets them some added points towards the overall
@@Subverta Exactly. Pierron, Balanche and Nicole have racked up a ton of points this year just from qualifying. If this year ends like last year did, points from qualifying could mean the difference in who takes the overall.
How do you know mid-run whether you're going at the right pace for 20th-40th or if you're going to end up 61st and not get a race run? You can't know this unless you have a late quali run and some outside communication. Even if your team could flag to you that you're fast enough after 2/3rd of the track, it'd be too easy to lose time in the last third and end up outside the top 60.

You are one of the very, very best. Work with those you know can help you polish and hone your skills. Don't work on that with the public.
At your rate, you'll be the most experienced at pushing 100% full run among all female riders. Similar to Amaury among the men.
Keep pushing! And refine, don't change.

As Vali said herself, she needs to dial it down a few notches and produce clean runs that may not win but still count. When that happens consistently, she can slowly turn it up to winning runs. What she seems to lack at times is that ability to fine tune her ambitions to the race at hand, so there is that blistering quick run and all if a sudden she is on the deck and its all gone...
This track seems like NASCAR - Just going really fast for the sake of going fast with only a few subtle moves for racers to compete with

0:34 this could very well be the difference between winning and losing. Those who hesitate or miscalculate will lose precious time here. 2:53 freeze it....and you can see the berms being blown out. That is not good for Vali, as that is where she seems to be having her problems.

Correct country, but the fault lies at the other end of lake Geneva. Has more to do with the UCI not positively engaging the venues for the betterment of the sport.
What is with THE WHISTLES ? There is no need for them. Riders, spectators KNOW when you are coming. Just soo annoying.....
