  • Every Spring Bank Holiday, or the last Monday of May, seven-to-nine-pound wheels of Double Gloucester cheese are rolled down Cooper's Hill in Southwest England. Waves of participants follow, quite literally hurling themselves off the 70-degree, ambulance-summoning incline. The first person to reach the bottom of the hill, be it consciously or unconsciously, wins the disc of cheese.
Although emergency services have tended to dislocated shoulders, broken thighbones and concussions in the past, the tradition has never recorded a fatality since its inception. In fact, there have been more deaths by cheese stored on shelves than those logged at the cheese rolling races. So, what motivates participants to join the bizarre championship? Are there any winning tactics for the Jack and Jill-style health risk? What is the lore backing it all?
In my chat with Chris 'King of the Hill' Anderson-a British Army veteran who holds the current record for winning 23 cheese rolling races over 14 years-we unpack the enduring appeal of a sport that demands the inhuman combination of athleticism, good understanding of physics, mild luck and immense love for dairy.
