This run is such a masterpiece. Chessjerk has thoroughly deserved this opportunity and I’m so, so happy he got the chance to dominate this game at AGDQ. Beautiful.
I came here to make a similar reply, but you said it very well. There are no "tricks" with a run like this, no out-of-bounds glitches to skip levels, nothing easy... just raw skill. The kind of skill that can only be gained by playing the same game for 30+ years, and seeing all that practice in action was fantastic to watch. Easily my favorite run of this years first quarter GDQ.
Watch some Castlevania speedruns, not the classic ones, the metroidvania ones, lots of live reaction and button pushing that would make a fighting game pro say WTH. I like the skill based speedruns too, this one is awesome.
31:26 - the "3 balloons" is actually a brick representation of the arcade version's 3 ball enemy, as they are tri-colored there (and do their own Disrupt when hit) vs the NES single colored ones.
I am glad someone else said that! I was worried about seeming pedantic when adding "ironic that this level would be exclusive to a version of the game where the object does not look like that"
Also the ice cream was obviously Blue Raspberry flavored!! Not that anyone would know that nowadays, since that color has been taken by cotton candy (gross!) but I remember.. still my favorite!
GDQ truly brings out the best in video game speedruns. This one was unexpected. I saw that there was arcanoid on GDQ and thought to myself that this would have to be impressive. Absolute legend. Very fun to watch. Great execution and great commentary. Glad to see that GDQ is still going strong so many years later.
The reflexes needed to clear this on one credit... just holy crap. Played this game since I was a baby on the DOS version and never made it past level 4.
The reflexes....just unbelievable. I spent so many hours playing this game when i was in my late teens and never was even close to having the skill this young man does. Very impressive!.

Arkanoid memories... Around 1988 or 1989 I was a salesman, working "up country" in British Columbia. Lot of long drives between small towns. In Williams Lake they had an arcade, and an Arkanoid. They also sold ice cream for 25 cents (one scoop). So I bought an ice cream, then put in a quarter, and finished the game. A few days later I came back through Williams Lake and made a special stop at the arcade again. Got my ice cream, put in my quarter and overheard someone behind me say "That's the guy!". Love this game.
I just wanted to take a quick look at this run because i played Arkanoid a lot back in the days (although casually), but i would have never thought that it might be this intense. And the level of precision is just crazy. Congrats, great run!
Round 35 is a flower with clouds in a meadow. Utterly stunning speedrun, I'm only familiar with Alleyway, and I wasn't much good at that past level 3 either. This was amazing to watch!
I grew up playing Arkanoid (and Marble Madness) on an Amiga 500 and this brings back fond memories of being completed housed by those incredibly challenging games. I did a double take when I saw an Arkanoid speed run and had to watch. I was flabbergasted by the amazing skill of CJ and the awesome commentary. What a run!
My grandmother passed around this time last year, but this is one of the games that I used to play with her pretty religiously in my youth. Its nice to see this come up at AGDQ
Hardest NES games considered by normal players - Contra, Ninja Gaiden, Battletoads. Meanwhile a much harder game was done live during AGDQ. Speedrun or not but this game is super tough for clear. Excellent run with a lot of extremely precise moves!
Akanoid is out of the league for normal players. I beat the 3 games You mentioned as a kid and my PB in Arkanoid was level 7 because I got lucky with warp capsule 😂
I love seeing Arkanoid on here! I played it on the Amiga back in the day using the mouse, and I got to Doh a couple of times but never managed to beat him. And yes, I was surprised when you got to level 33 and Doh wasn't there! Great run, thanks so much!
This was my mom’s favorite game on the nes. The only console game she ever played. I played too of course but I don’t remember the ball moving nearly this fast. I also remember this was about the most expensive game at FunCo when they very first opened.
I played this all the time as a kid and only ever got to Level 3. So seeing someone beat every level of a game I only ever beat less than 10% of is absolutely crazy in the best way. Huge props to ChessJerk.
A local pizza place had a small arcade in the back with a few machines. I played a ton of arkanoid there as a kid and I was pretty damn good at it. Lots of fun times. II also played a ton of my other favorite game there, Bubble Bobble. A great game on the NES that I loved playing was Thunder and Lightning
A friend of mine had this game as a kid, complete with the paddle controller. For some reason, he couldn't move the paddle all the way to the right, so whenever he triggered a warp, he had to grab an extend power up to be big enough to reach the warp on the right.
this one is for the gdq books alongside cyghfer gimmick, funkdoc castlevania etc.,, insane run! congrats to speedrunners, much love from the philippines!
I'd never played this before, this run was so fun I decided to play it, holy hell it's hard! Really makes me appreciate that this guy got up in front of a crowd and whooped this game.
Seeing that controller took me right back to childhood, playing Breakout on the Atari. Those paddles really are amazing for this style of game and make it feel SO much better.
I know way long time ago we played Arkanoid - Revenge of Doh, and I recall getting further than the 3rd level - usually until level 12 or 13 which was extremely low on the C64 PAL and hard to control, and all gold blocks except for the left most one. I also know that my dad finished the game at least a few times, and usually bounced the ball around Doh at a shallow angle to hit him ~5x per go-around, while dodging the projectiles.
Ah, looks like they didn't tone it down for the home release, the arcade one is that nasty but I thought they would have been gentler towards home console players.
Oh my god I played this SNES game probably 25 years ago for hours and hours per day. One trick my kid brother found out was that boss that rotates the screen was to rotate the controller as well. Brilliant solution to a brutal level :D
I beat this game on the Amiga when I was like six years old. I have very little memory of it other than just being happy i finally did it because yeah this game is HARD.
Do the silvers not reset their hit count when you die on the NES version? If so, that makes the C64 version harder (along with a harder Level 3) as the silvers reset their hit count upon a loss of a Vaus. TBF, the powerups are broken on the C64 version (P blocks only fall while you have lasers and Enlarge blocks only fall while the Vaus currently has the Catch power). Still, an absolutely fantastic speed run for a game where all we had up to this point were TAS/save state runs.
We actually do have somewhat of a Mario Maker tool for Arkanoid, in Arkanoid 2 on the NES it has a level editor where you make your own level (which you then play as the first level).
AGDQ 2024 is live right now! Tune in to watch at www.twitch.tv/gamesdonequick
I had no idea Arkanoid even HAD a final boss fight. This run was truly something else.
I wasn't even sure it had a second level :D
The SNES version has MULTIPLE boss fights and they even use SNES hardware tricks. It can also be played with the mouse.
Yaelsraek's hair is freaking rad
Thanks! 🙂
@@yelsraek you did great!!

Never thought I'd see you here! Love your work on Diminish!
"masterpiece" LOL 😂
Amazing run and commentary, can relate to those who never made it past level 3
It's always lovely to see my favourite creators enjoying the same random stuff as I do.
Yo love ur vids jrose
Nice to see that you like Arkanoid too.
This is extremely impressive, most speedruns are muscle memory and set ups but this is pure skill.

as a kid I used to play this game with my dad... as in my dad played and I watched. Brings tears to my eyes. RIP
I have the same core memory - cheering my dad on as he finally beat the game
🙏🏻
This is the only game my dad would play. He's still young but I haven't had time to spend with him in recent years and that bothers me so much.
31:26 - the "3 balloons" is actually a brick representation of the arcade version's 3 ball enemy, as they are tri-colored there (and do their own Disrupt when hit) vs the NES single colored ones.
I am glad someone else said that! I was worried about seeming pedantic when adding "ironic that this level would be exclusive to a version of the game where the object does not look like that"
It reminded me of the talisman item in Castlevania SOTN, but that was made by Konami not Taito, so I doubt it is a reference.
Also the ice cream was obviously Blue Raspberry flavored!! Not that anyone would know that nowadays, since that color has been taken by cotton candy (gross!) but I remember.. still my favorite!
The arcade version's circle dial was a thing of beauty. It was heavy, yet smooth. I loved this game because of the dial, and the sounds!
What an insane showcase of the game, and what a wholesome couch.
That was a masterpiece. Holy cow that's a rough game to speedrun, and seeing it done was truly something to behold!!

Watched it live, and having played it and failed at it a lot as a kid, all i could say all along was : "HOW ???" Mind blowing
This run is strangely relaxing, thank you

I dumped so many quarters into the Arkanoid cabinet near where I lived when I was a kid. Brutal but I still love it.
I don't think I've ever been so tense watching a speedrun. Brilliant!
I love how the internet and GDQ has shown me that undefeatable games of our childhood are not as impossible as we used to think. Well done!
