    Who is more barbaric?
A: the indigenous people of the Faroe Islands who prefer all animals to be free, even those they eat? They share the meat they catch. Nothing goes to waste and the food is shared equally among the locals. A huge majority of these pilot whales are left alone to continue their good life free in nature where they will die of natural causes.
B: the people in the industrialized world who enslave all animals, deprive them of all their natural environment, pump them with chemicals, and then slaughter every one of them in the name of money.
Get your focus straight and get rid of the real killer: the Western worlds industrialized pollution - that includes your own pollution.

Rull Mourn The islanders nowadays kill for fun and sport, to relieve their tedious existence. As the meat is highly toxic the meat is not eaten in quantities like it was 100 years ago. Medical health authourities have recommended not to eat any of the meat. The islanders privately admit that the Grind will soon stop.

kiezertosser11 You are the king of B.S. You either make outright dishonest claims or completely ignore facts (because you have no counter claim). Lets make a list of the nonsense and drivel that you constantly spurt out:
      1) Lie: This is my favourite one: Whale meat is "organic" that is just hilarious when you know full well the meat is highly toxic.
      2) Ignore: The islanders privately admit that the Grind will cease in the coming decade(s) as the meat is toxic as can not be eaten in quantity.
      3) Ignore: The whale and dolphin meat is toxic
      4) Ignore: The islanders kill Puffins which are listed as vulnerable.
      5) Ignore: Incest on the Faroe islands is rife.
      6) Lie: Stating the Grind is 'Humane' when a half an hour of brutal chasing and a slow death up to 5 minutes is considered normal.
      7) Lie: Forever whining that less than ideal farm methods happen in some countries, so this justifies the cruel treatment of cetaceans in the Grind.
      8) Ignore: Endangered species of cetaceans are killed in the Grind.
      9) Lie: Pretend that the islands eat whale and dolphin meat as a major part of their diet, when you know full well it is eaten as a delicacy, as it is toxic
      10) Lie: Pretend that there is absolutely no excitement and thrill in a Grind, which clearly there is, and is by definition another form of fun and sport.

2 wrongs does not make a right..They do not leave any Pilot whales alone, once a pod is spotted the whole family is terrorized for hours as they are driven into the fjords...not one is spared, pregnant females, babies the lot are slaughtered, and they don't eat them all, there is a graveyard under the sea where Pilot whale bodies are dumped! They don't need the meat, and it is highly contaminated, their own health officials and doctors are telling them to STOP, not cut down, but STOP!...They are wiping out whole gene pools of these highly intelligent beautiful mammals, I'm not condoning the treatment of farm animals by the industrialized world, in fact I don't eat or wear any animals, but what goes on on these islands is wicked, watch some videos, they are laughing as they skewer the spines of these creatures, children missing the spine, these creatures die in agony in the blood of their families, and they are highly evolved, they know what is happening...Nobody knows how many Pilot whales there are, there are many who believe they are endangered.....but that is not the point, the way these animals are killed is not legal in any slaughter house in the western world..... th-cam.com/video/-0WtJH6SmvY/w-d-xo.html

William Haines whale hunting in the Faroes is NOT "sustainable". According to ASCOBANS / Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) convention secretariat staff (same offices). Faroese whale hunts are NOT designated ‘sustainable’ under ASCOBANS due both to lack of accurate pilot whale population data and the ocean areas covered by the treaty in regards to Appendix II species. The grindadrap has not been declared 'sustainable' by the CMS for the same reasons as confirmed again on the 28th January 2016 by the ASCOBANS coordinator & CMS Marine Mammals Officer based in Bonn, Germany.

They prefer local organic meat from animals that actually had a good life. They do not enslave animals like we do in the "modern" world, and they do not kill animals for money, as we do. You might not like the meat the islanders prefer to eat, but given what meat we eat and how we treat animals then sounds hypocritical for any person living in the industrialized "modern" world to point any fingers and claim those islanders are worse than us and are "barbarians"

Personally, I’d prefer wild caught food over our current factory farmed frankenfood any day. That said, I don’t agree w/ needlessly over killing animals. Be respectful & smart. Hunt what you need. Use what you kill. Appreciate Mother Nature. There’s no honor in mindlessly killing a bunch of animals “just for fun”.

I really, really doubt the Faroese are overkilling. Japan and Iceland might be another story. I'm honestly not certain.
There's a seperate question about whales in particular as a species, I suppose.
I'm really not a fan at all of the sloppy and unscientific reasoning of animal rights activists, in general. However, our scientific understanding of whales and other cestacians seems to be increasingly pointing us in the direction of recognizing that they probably do posess not only consciousness but sentience and high intelligence. If this is the case, then the argument against killing them even for food becomes stronger than, say, the argument against eating fish or birds or other mammals which do not possess those traits.

Hunting puffins is illegal in the Faroe Islands because they are threatened. But pilot whales are not any more endangered than salmon or herring, so there is no reason not to hunt them if it wasn't for the mercury. The grind does not harm nature. It only harms our health.

If you killing them by the hundreds and thousands despite having other abundant food sources, then it's a sport. If you could care less about mothers caring unborn calfs then it's a sport. If you compare this hunt to the Eskimos who regard the whale to be sacred , and only hunt it because they can't sustain themselves with other food sources, then this is a sport .
I do eat meat , so not to sound hypocrital, but I also believe thar what is domesticated for human consumption helps balance the food chain . When we start hunting and harvesting more into the domestic food chain, then we do overstep our bounds .

Except the climate is far more conducive to sustaining one self in other ways than the Faroe Islands. New England isn't 1000km away from the mainland, the Faroes is. Thorshavn, capital of the Faroes, get something 868 hours of sunshine a year. Boston sees 2,633 hours of sunshine a year. Faroes are super windy, Boston isn't. All of New England's climate support tree growth, the Faroes islands never had trees due to its rough climate.
Average July temperatures in Thorshavn is 10,7°C(51F), while for Boston its 23.4°C(74F). The Faroes only see two months of the year where the average temperature is above 10°C(50F), while Boston sees this 6 months of the year. See the problem? Summer temperatures dictates what can grow. Nothing but grass and a few bushes grow there, unlike New England with its lush forests and fertile farmland.
The conditions of a given place dictates how people live. The conditions on the Faroe islands, Iceland and Norway are such that hunting and fishing is necessary to exist there beyond straight survival. Unless you think its a good idea to literally import everything with huge ships, further killing off the oceans and our planet's fragile ecosystems.
You're unintelligent and there's nothing that can ever be done with it. You were simply born that way, lacking the necessary cognitive skills to look at complex issues reasonably.

To pretend that the killing of whales and dolphins is somehow humane is absurd nonsense. Pods of whales or dolphins are rounded up and chased usually up to 12 nautical miles to the point of exhaustion. From there they are dragged onto a beach and their throats slit, this is a process that can take up to 5 minutes. They are then pushed towards the beach and killed quickly. It's an opportunist hunt and is very sustainable. The West just had it's own view on ethics and see the blood in the water as being barbaric. As usual, the West dictating how the rest of the world should live.
It's also not advised for many women to eat due to Mercury. That being said, it's not common to eat and usually frozen due to the infrequency of pods swimming to the islands.

*The Faroes : ISLANDS OF EVIL AND DARKNESS Here are 12 reasons why:*
    1) Where they kill more whales and dolphins per capita in the world, than any other country, by far, for fun and sport.
    2) The whale and dolphin meat is highly toxic, so it can not be eaten except in very small amounts. Large quantities are simply dumped back at sea.
    3) Where child abuse is rife, as the islanders knowingly feed their children toxic whale meat.
    4) Where they kill endangered species of whales and dolphins, and cynically make up laws to make it legal, yet go against international law on endangered species.
    5) Where incest by family members is rife on the islands.
    6) Where they strangle endangered Puffins and steal their eggs.
    7) Where people knowingly and willingly consume meat heavily contaminated with mercury and don’t give a toss, primarily because they eat meat heavily contaminated with mercury.
    8) Where a country with one of the highest per capita income in Europe claims they need to kill whales and dolphins in order to survive.
    9) Where toxic whale meat is said to be free, except tourists can buy it in the restaurants and it’s for sale in the market.
    10) Where population numbers change each day without any scientific validation. One day there are 128,000 pilot whales, the next 780,000. The fact is no one knows, except for the guy in Klaksvik with the crystal ball.
    11) Where an hour of stressful pursuit and many minutes of agony accompanied by horrendous screams of pain is described as “humane killing.”
    12) Where the Christian community says the whales are a gift from God, though Leviticus expressly forbids the eating of whale meat. Apparently Jesus made a side trip to the Faroes to give them special dispensation.

    • @magnusorn7313
      @magnusorn7313 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1) dont know a fisherman who hates all fishing activities
      2) how much of the sheep do you eat? probably just the legs
      3) "the health authorities in 1989 recommended the general population to consume only 150-200 g of whale meat per week and only 100-200 g blubber per month. Further, they recommended abstaining completely from eating liver and kidneys."
"A 1982 study revealed that a Faroese person would consume an average of 12 grams of pilot whale meat and 7 grams of whale blubber a day."
      not a mathematician but...
      4) pilot whales are nowhere near endangered
      5) actually less inbreeding occurs in faroe island than in some continental european countries, its just that over time they became homogeneous
      6) lying out your teeth again, puffins are not endangered, also cant get a single source on strangling
      7) yes, mercury is a problem, by the solution is to not pollute the ocean, mercury isnt good for it either, it shouldnt be there
actually mercury levels have been decreasing already
      8) they could survive without it, make money selling it to tourists and its a part of the culture, too bad polluting the sea led to high mercury levels, and im sure we both agree that we should clean the ocean
      9) "said to be free" "the meat is not exported, but kept for themselves and distributed amongst the community as free food" when where tourists "amongst the community"?
      10) "There are an estimated 1 million long-finned pilot whales and approximately 200,000 short-finned pilot whales worldwide." according to marinebio

I have a few questions for this:
    1) what does living; closer to, with, and in harmony to/with/of nature mean?
1b) does the aforementioned community rituals adhere to the above definitions without logical contradictions or 'special' pleading?
    2) is there an alternative means of organizing and expressing the community (in comparison to the above) that involves less harm to both parties; and/or improves the lives of both or only one (without harm to the other)?
    3) what would be lost if the aforementioned practices were; replaced, changed, made illegal, or simply stopped?
    4) of those things that would be lost (3), can the aforementioned community live without these? Are they integral for the community to function?
    5) does continued practice of the community rituals reduce some aspect of the world, such that the 'world' as a whole cannot experience that aspect or is lesser for it? This question seeks to determine if human intervention here is a significant factor that is causing a declining trend that otherwise would not occur without human intervention (human-affected climate change as an example). Is this declining aspect to be considered an acceptable loss?

A traditional house in the Faroe Islands uses rocks or concrete to made the foundation of the house, and often the upper level is made of wood, as it isolates better per centimeter than concrete and creates better in-side climate. Though more and more houses use more concrete than before, as the number of storms in the North Atlantic require stronger and stronger houses. While most houses have modern roofing, still many use grass turf as roofing, as it keeps the warm inside the house and is heavy which helps stabilize the house during storms. More and more houses use therminal heating from water being pumped hundreds and hundreds of meters down into the rocky island and earths inner heatness warms the water that then warms the housing. To drill the wholes is expensive, but then you pay a fraction of a precentage to pump the water down/up compared to the oil other houses use for heating. The electriticy comes mainly from windmills. At times 100% of the electricity on the islands comes from hydroplants or windmills. During the summer months when their is less rain and less wind they still rely on oil to make electriticy, but the goal is to become 100% independant of oil to create electricity by 2030. 3/4 of the year they have already reached that goal - the rest 1/4 requires more windmills, which are planned for the next 2-3 years.

Interesting that every time the discussion about the Faroese annual whale hunt starts, the "defenders" of this hunt start to whine about hypocrisy and making comparisons with the beef industry. Probably all of the opponents of the grindagrap are equally opposed to bio-industrial ways of raising cattle and pork for beef, meat and milk consumption. The local Faroe health officer has a long-term research program running and educates the locals on reduced consumption of methyl mercury-poisoned whale meat. The recommended consumption is max. 100 gram per week for adults. Children and pregnant women are advised to refrain from eating whale blubber and meat. There is really no need for the hunt. With one of the highest capita in Europe, the standard of living is very high on the Faroe. In times of globalisation and everyone looking for an identity, its this old - and historically necessary - tradition that unifies a certain group of Faroese, bonding, and with a feeling of togetherness they try to preserve old traditions and values...but please, not at the expenses of whales and dolphins: these times are long gone!
