    A lot of work goes into a traditional Alaskan whale hunt, with a successful catch playing a big part in a community's survival. For more information on these hunts, you can read on here: on.natgeo.com/2FU4giC

      @Jason Rasmussen Oh they do target the Inuit when it's Seal season. The Canadian coast guard protects the Inuit sailors who would certainly die if they were rammed by a large vessle like the Sea Shepered uses (since the water is freezing, falling in would mean death).

      @Jason Rasmussen why don't you, go read the the Marine Protection Act. You will find that there is literally an entire section excusing Native Americans who live up in Alaska. My country Canada has a similar exception in our laws. So they aren't "breaking" the law because the law does not apply to them due to their uniqe situation.

    I volunteer at a zoo and know about the subsistence hunters in Alaska and Canada. They continue to fascinate me because of the way they live. These people are deeply reliant on the animals they hunt because it is for survival. They use every part of the animal. They do not waste anything. They hunt to survive and only to survive.
    To all you commenters who are criticizing them for it, I would like to see how well you’d be able to live like that. You probably wouldn’t even last a single day living like they do

      In more populated areas its a bit disturbing 😳 leaving the guts in the middle of the woods would hurt my heart. Not speaking bad about it. We really are very different still in culture.

      I think a lot of people in the western world would have a serious problem if they had to gut an animal, take out all the guts and other stuff to get to the good stuff.
      If that was your only means of survival I would imagine you would get used to it quickly but some people would probably throw up or would not be able to look at seeing the insides of a dead animal. I have never done it but I do not think I would have a problem with it.

    Three things.

    2. Even if they were, what you folks don't understand is unlike whalers such as the Japanese who overhunt, the Inuits only hunt as much as they need, one whale alone being enough to keep them fed the entire year and make sure to not have any part go to waste. If that ain't respect for the animal they hunt, I don't know what is.

    As a hunter, angler, conservationist, and animal lover I understand almost all sides of this arguement. I understand why peopel think it should be stopped since most whales species are endangered, however it's not the small scale hunting by these villages that are causing the problems but rather the commercial hunting conducted by asian and white countries. They practiced the wholesale slaughter of whales just for their oil and balleen, while these peopel use every part of a few eagles eagles to feed while communities for entire seasons. Do I believe that as long as it's well regulated and whale populations a relatively stable they should be allowed to continue plus, hunting isnt even the main threat to whales anymore now its mainly pollution and global warming.

      So please enlighten us with your educated background. Perhaps we can learn a lot from you. These traditional huntings may have way more impact than you think. The whale which they kill can be a carrier of good genes or he can have more productive sperm than other whales. So you can not say that this will not effect the whale population. Certain species of whales are endangered so i think they could reconsider their traditions. We do not live in a time when there is an abundance of animals such it was in 1800s or earlier. We should take care of our environment and should not kill animals for traditional purposes. I understand that they live of it and eat it, but there are more possibilities. Please take care of the environment and spread the word. This is not a hate comment and i am not trying to disrespect you. I respect everyone’s opinion. I am just concerned about our environment.

      You actually believe a simple tradition, is more important then an actual living, breathing, intelligent species life?? What should scare you is that you believe a simple act of copying what some ancient relative used to do to survive, when you aren't doing it yourself to survive, takes precident over anythings life.....that is scarey, but typical for anyone with a lack of empathy for other species because that human believes what they want to do is more important as they feel above or superior to an animal. It's not ignorant people commenting, it's people with empathy and against a senseless slaughter of a whale just because someone did it in the past......this is why the Ocean has been overfished, people who think like you

    • @tristenfosbery8079
      @tristenfosbery8079 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @jnielsen90 In case you weren't aware, it's not just a tradition. It's a means of life for many indigenous peoples living in the Arctic. To simply stop would result in people starving. But my guess is that you don't really care because you don't have to see the results of what happens when these people stop providing food for themselves. To answer your statement, I don't feel superior to all the beautiful and wonderful animals, but people need to eat. The respect that I and many other people who kill and eat their own food have for the animals we eat is something you could never even comprehend. However, I do agree that it is terrible how overfished the oceans have become. But that's not the fault of a small community, trying to live. It's the fault of big business and their lack of empathy towards the natural world.
