Lamalera: a remote village of 2 500 people on the southern coast of Indonesia. In this hostile land where nothing grows, people have managed to survive only thanks to a spectacular age-old hunt: the traditional and sacred harpooning of sperm whales. Despite danger and hard lives, the villagers have always been self-sufficient, living according to their traditions, far from globalization. But today, this balance is about to be broken. As people from a neighboring island start fishing with dynamite, the whales are disappearing. With no more whales to hunt, Lamalera is dying.
In order to survive and feed their families, some villagers decide to embrace modernity and start using motors to fish further away from the island. But others want to preserve their traditional way of life at all costs, leading to a serious conflict of generations. Ancient social codes are falling apart. «Everybody for himself» is becoming the new model. Meanwhile, environmental protectionists are getting worried about overfishing and plan to turn the area into a natural reserve. What can we imagine for the last whale hunters? When globalization strikes and people are torn between the preservation of traditions and the need for modernity, discover how an entire village has to confront a new kind of battle, an ultimate battle-for their survival.

Please minimize the use of blurring effect. This is an educational film, and we seem to lose quite a lot of information trying to accommodate a small group who frankly should grow up and accept the uncomfortable reality of blood, violence and death in the natural human heritage that is hunting for food. In my country Fiji, we use whale tooth called tabua in many of our cultural gatherings. In funerals, to seek forgiveness, to ask for a girls hand in marriage , we present these whale tooth which is braided on both end and its off great value. I have always wondered where our ancestors got this whale tooth because they didnt practise whale haunting. Since we are part of the austronesian family,i think i now know why.

I stayed there 10 days in 1993! Joined them hunting whale sharks back then. They charged Rupiah 15,000 incl 1,000 for the boat. They practice barter trade with villagers from the other side of the island, bc there soil is not great at all.

come on, this is culture. we must respect the culture and must preserve their culture. Just so you know they don't do this every day, they only do it on special days in their culture. They don't just harpoon whales, they choose the biggest whales and let the other whales live and reproduce. They also guard their beaches and seas so that whales can breed and be comfortable there, the proof is that whales migrate and breed there. So, we must respect and see this habit as a culture that can be used as a lesson for the younger generation.

Whatever is in the supermarket is slaughtered and harvested in cruel ways too but we are happy to shop and enjoy it but we judge people like these for making an honest natural and not so easy living. These guys are fit and healthy. No obesity and the ills of civilization

Belajar bertani dan menternak. Tukar pola hidup dan pekerjaan. Jika selamanya mereka memburu paus lama2 spesis ini akan pupus dan mereka sendiri akan putus punca perekonomian. Ubah pola hidup seperti bertani sayuran dan buahan serta menternak haiwan seperti lembu, kambing, biri2 atau membuat kolam dan tambak ikan. Hidup pada masa kini tidak boleh berharap dengan hanya satu sumber!
Mereka bukan pemburu paus. Bukan yang memburu paus kemana-mana seperti kapal ikan Jepang dan China. Mereka hanya membunuh beberpa ekor paus yang lewat di depan rumah/kampung mereka, dua kali setahun, dan hanya beberapa ekor, cukup untuk kebutuhan mereka, tidak membuat mereka jadi kaya. Hanya meneruskan tradisi, menerima karunia dari Tuhan dari paus yang sedang beremigrasi dari lautan Hindia ke Pacific dan sebaliknya.

We need to introduce the alternative first and we need to help them achieve the objective. We need to make sure the new system is working then we can help them reduce the numbers of whales, dolphins and other species they hunt per seasons so their culture and traditions will not banish forever..
Sometimes the best thing to do, is to do nothing. Just leave the Lamalera alone. They will will be just fine, as they have been for centuries.

It's quite hypocritical of the WWF to go after the Lamalera and their traditional fishing, while not doing anything about the Japanese shark fin fishing, or the Taigi dolphin hunts.
And those large commercial fishing boats intruding into other countries to fish illegally

- What the government of Indonesia spent on Palestine is peanuts compare to what they spent on Indonesia itself.
- Every government in the world spent resources on various subjects, it's just how the way things works. I mean, there are still lots of hungers and homelessness in the US, and yet they both arming Israel and send foods to Palestine. And just so you know, Indonesia also has ministries for "mundane" subjects such as culture, youth and sports etc. Are those a priority? No, but the government has moral obligation to its people to "govern" them.
- Not only the government lack of money / resources (ALWAYS, just like 99% other countries in the world), Indonesia's geography makes development challenging.
- On some cases, it is the people / communities themselves that refused development, for various reasons. For example, government has long planned to build a bridge across the Island of Java and Bali, but some communities are against it.
I am not saying those things above to defend the government of Indonesia (they made plenty of mistakes and has lots of shortcomings), neither as specific to this people (Lamalera). I meant it as THINGS TO CONSIDERATE before you (anyone) draw a conclusion.
